Laptop turns-off after 3 min when runs on battery

Q: Laptop turns-off after 3 min when runs on battery

My sony vaio laptop turns-off automatically when runs on battery. If it is on main power, no issue. Please suggest me whether its happening due to bad battery.

Preferred Solution: Laptop turns-off after 3 min when runs on battery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I suggest it's due to a bad battery.

This is a bizarre problem I think.  My Lenovo P50 laptop will charge when turned off and plugged in.  But when I turn it on, it's running just off battery and therefore discharges rather rapidly (1-2 hours).  It does NOT say "Plugged in but not charging". It just shows that it's running off battery.  Additionally, there is no light on where plug goes in.  If I power down, sure enough light comes on and if I leave it for a few hours and boot up, it's back to 100%.  But then of course, it slowly discharges.   What the heck is going on? Thanks,Dave

A:Laptop battery will charge when computer is off, but when I boot up, it runs off battery only

Check to make sure your laptop is not in Airplane mode, because that would cause that behavior.     Check in two places, one under Windows 10's Action center (Icon to the right of Time in taskbar) and using Lenovo Vantage.     It could also be set in Lenovo Settings if you have that installed as well.  Lenovo Vantagehttps://vantage.lenovo.com/  Edit:    would uncheck "Enable auto detection" as well. Cheers,

Hi, I have a Gateway AJ2 that is acting up. If I have the battery installed, the computer runs on the battery, regardless if the AC adapter is plugged in or not. If the battery isn't installed, the computer runs on AC with no problems.

The battery does not charge. The computer is a little over a year old. I don't exactly recall when the problem started, but it might have been after a Windows Vista update or a bios update.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:Laptop runs on only battery or AC, not both

The battery is probably bad. They are consumables, just like paper is to a printer... Regardless of its age, it needs to be replaced if only to verify for a bad battery or not

Hi, im new and dont know where to post this. i have a laptop "Dell inspiron 2200" and just the other day i had it turned on and when i unpluged the powercord and it shut right down. and wouldnt turn on. "As if the battery was dead" when i plug it back in it turns on like normal. when i check the battery meter it says there is a battery and it's 100% full. so i know it's getting good connection. i tried a friends battery with the same results so i know thats not the problem.

I went to dell's site and downloaded the "Battery calibration utility" for my laptop but to install it i need a floppy drive and dont have one. I tried tricking it into thinking a jumpdrive was a floppy by changing the drive letter to A: with no luck. i'm not even sure this would fix my problem was just sugested by someone else.

So HP laptops have a tendency of overheating... and when they do, they power off immediately. This is NOT that issue. When I'm working solely on my battery (no AC charger) My laptop will turn off in maybe 45 minutes... I keep an eye on the battery level and it never drops to below 20% when this occurs. The laptop isn't burning hot and no error/warning messages are displayed (and no beeps).... Just poof power off. Ive downloaded the newest HP support assistant and ran the battery test and it said it was fine.I've tried to the manual calibration (since Support assistant isn't giving me the option to calibrate it) where I do the diagnostic logic (F2) and run the Hard Drive test on Battery until the laptop dies... Plugged in the charger and restarted.. what do you know, battery was at 40%... on the battery battery level button is showing half-charge.... So what do I do when the laptop is saying battery is good - not replace... How do I force that calibration? Something is wrong in that the power is dying half-way through the power cycle. Apprecaite any advice!

Hey guys, I hope someone can help with this. I upgraded my Alienware laptop to windows 10 several months ago but only recently did I try running it on battery power and found out that it repeatably/seemingly randomly crashes. So far this ONLY seems to happen when running on the battery. After installing Windows 10 I did a reset and cleared everything, letting Windows 10 format the HD and reinstall itself. Then I downloaded all my drivers from Alienware and installed them clean. Everything has been running fine up until now.

The error I am getting is:

System Service Error

When I googled the error it said that it was a BSOD, so here I am. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi everyone,

I've recently acquired a Scan 3XS LG15 laptop and with its GTX 680M it runs games like Assassin's Creed III maxed out very well, but only when plugged in. The drop in performance happens as soon as it's unplugged, and speeds up again once plugged in.

When on battery games run very badly indeed. I'm not sure whether this is down to the game running on the Intel HD Graphics 4000 or whether it is just not switching to a higher power state.

I've also checked windows power profiles and nothing seems out of place. Nvidia Contol Panel has been set to always use the GPU and the prefer maximum performance. It doesn't seem to make any difference.

I think there's something called Optimus that changes profile depending on what you're doing, but I haven't noticed this working.

If anyone could give me a hand, it would be much appreciated.

A:Laptop Runs Poorly When On Battery

Try changing it to high performance mode.

When your on battery mode click on the battery in the task bar and select more power options, then open "Hide additional plans" and select High Performance. This will lower battery life, but should help.

1. Laptop turns off without any warning, when the battery is low. There is no "low battery" indicator or anything of that sort. The laptop just turns off. This has been happening for over one and a half months now.2. The battery also lasts lesser time than what the battery indicator indicates (MUCH lesser). It has been a little over 2 years now since I purchased this laptop. Ofcourse it depends on my usage. But the battery indicator should suggest reasonably sensible "lasting" time right?

Whenever I unplug my computer from its charging cord it automatically turns off. I was having this problem before, but replaced the battery with a brand new one. It was working fine and I broke in the battery by charging and discharging it fully for the first 3 cycles and the laptop was working well without power for the past week since I got it, other than taking a minute or so to respond to me pushing the power on button before working when it was not connected to the cord. Now this morning it switches off whenever I unplug it even though the battery says it is at 100% charge and still charging. But, the light on the side of my power port is on red/orange when I have it plugged in, but only when it's lid is closed and it is fully booted up. I checked on other forum answers and tried changing to different power saving plans and even switching all options to 'never' but nothing has worked.I also looked at the pins underneath my laptop where my battery should go to see if they are damaged. Two of them are on a different angle to the rest but I think this is how the laptop was built anyway? I dont want to move them incase it just makes the situation worse. What should I try next? I would like this fixed ASAP as I need this laptop for school and often don't have access to a power plug in class. Thankyou.

My laptop keeps turning itself of when it is on battery. It lasts about 20 minutes, but is getting shorter everytime.

The battery is not running out- when I turn it back on it has 50% charge normally.

It turns off as if it has no power- no warning, and when I turn it back on it reloads and everything is new, with documents and Internet sessions needing restoring.

How can I fix this? I don't think it is the battery, as it has charge when I turn it back on, and it only has 20% wear.

A:Laptop Randomly Turns Off When In Battery

Welcome to TSG!!

If it's truly random, it won't be the Power Management settings. Some laptops have a utility that enables you to "calibrate" your battery. It will fully charge, then fully discharge the battery, perhaps more than one cycle, to allow the laptop to "learn" the battery's capabilities and characteristics. Check and see if you can find such an app. Different manufacturers will give it different names. Also, check their Web site to see if it is a separate download.

I have days of electricity outages here and I need to use my laptop. The thing is, it runs off 18.5 V 3.5 A (AC adapter output), so it is expecting 18.5 V, what will happen if I connect it to a 12 V? I know for sure some laptops will work! I tried some crappy old laptop and it ran even though the adapter its AC adapter outputs 18 V, but I did not want to try this on my laptop as I don't know what might happen. The laptop's internal battery is dead and I have actually removed it, so should not the voltage be enough to run the laptop since now there is no battery to charge! And since the internal battery outputs 10.8V, should not the laptop be able to run on that low voltage from the power source as well? But again I was afraid if I provide too low voltage the laptop will try to withdraw more current, and that might heat it up and fry it! But then I thought I can add a fuse to prevent the current from exceeding certain limit (say 7 A?)And if we assume it does not work! Then I can add 2 batteries which will give me 24 V, but now I'm thinking 24 (actually almost 28V when the batteries are fully charged) might be too much for the laptop and now high voltage could really hurt!A solution to that could be to add a linear voltage regulator, but that wastes too much energy (or does it not?), which is why I'm not using DC-AC power inverter in the first place, after all I'm trying to make this setup as efficient as possible (because as I said we have days of outages), so how do I reduce vo... I have a gateway m-6851. I bought this battery 2 months ago. This just started happening today. My laptop is running fine, I unplug it to move it. I assumed it went to battery power, but nope. It turned off. This happens 100% of the time. I've tried reseating the battery twice. Windows 7 reads it at 100% with no problems. any ideas?

I don't know that much about hardware, but is there maybe some setting thats messed up. Such as a setting that tells windows to switch to battery, or try to switch to battery, because windows reads the battery just fine.

Hi if anyone can help i would be so greatful!!

I have a laptop which slows down as soon as i plug it into the mains. When running on batteries it is as fast as it should be and is perfect. I could comprehend the problem if it was the otherway around but this is too wierd.

I have rebooted the wholes system, it is clean as a whistle, over 30G of space, Virus checker / Firewall / ADaware remover / Registry cleaner / Defraged / Disk Cleanup - everything is in working order to keep this machine clean and healthy and it is.

The problem is most apparent when watching movies or clips, as the image goes out of sinc with the sound, freezes or goes super-slow, yet as soon as i remove the plug, and it's running on batteries it's fine again.

I know someone out there must have a solution.

A:Laptop runs slow when plugged in, but fine on battery power

Do you have access to another power cord to try. It kind of sounds like that there is a problem with the one that you have. I suppose that the problem could be internal to the laptop itself, but the swapping with a known good cord would tell you where the problem is. Of course, if you always use the same wall outlet, the problem could be there.

My Dell precision 5510's display driver stops responding and getting recovered if I run any graphic intense programs in it. It happens only when I run it without the charger connected, it works fine if charger is connected.
It says display driver stopped responding and recovered by itself, but I am not able to resume whatever I was doing. It makes me rerun the program, after a while, some 2 minutes, the loop repeats(display driver stops working and getting recovered again). This makes me not able to use my laptop at all without charger connected.
I dont see any issue with less graphic intense programs like browsing etc., This happens only during games for me, I hope it will be the case with other graphic intense programs also.

Thanks in advance,
Any help wiil be much appreciated,

A:Dell precision 5510 display driver issue while laptop runs without mains (battery powered)

The system is functioning as designed - it shifts to the integrated GPU when on battery power to allow the system to run longer than it would with the discrete GPU.  While you can change that setting, which may help with the issue you see, you'll likely find the system won't run very long on a charge if you do.
If you want full power out of the CPU and GPU for games, play with the adapter connected.

This problem occurred with prior Win 7 Home O/S, so I upgraded to Windows 10. Heavens-to-Mergatroid!  This laptop runs just fine when only battery is powering it.  However, once I also plug in the power cord, the O/S does a hard crash within 1 to 3 minutes. How special! I can get about 2.5 to 3 hours when using the battery, but not if I also plug in the power cord.  That means that when the battery gets low I must perform a standard shutdown and then insert the power cord which recharges the battery if I don't turn  on computer.  If I then start the computer with both connected, it crashes.  I am not patient enough to live with a computer that has to be recharged every couple of hours.  HELP! I suspected a heating issue, so I took the back panels off and thoroghly cleaned the fan vents and other cracks and crevices using canned air, but this did not fix the problem.  Since in runs just fine on the battery, I deduce it is NOT a heating issue, neither dust or heat paste issues.  (I also used a cooling mat to no avail) Im 70 years old living in God's waiting room, but parts of my body are 18 to 30.  However, I do have "Essential Tremors" in both hands so I cannot do a full laptop disassembly even if I want to, which I don't.  I cannot afford to pay a computer repair shop $100 or more to try a fix this vexing power issue.  Other than hocking my car (it's too old also) to buy a new laptop, does an... I figured out that my cpu runs at 100% when using the power outlet, or when my computer is chargnig. Hey there,
I've been using my upgraded Inpiron 17R SE happily for a couple of years by now. I've even gone as far as buying an 128GB SSD to futureproof it. This is the only drive - besides the DVD drive - currently present in the laptop. However I've had an issue for quite a while:
Whenever I try to boot the Laptop only using the Battery (even fully charged) it Posts then loads Windows and turns of just before the Login-Screen (I can't see it). When I proceed to turn it back on, it Posts then beeps and says that there is a Real Time Clock Error and gives me the option to proceed booting or to enter Setup.
This however doesn't occur when using the Power-Brick. Moreover it isn't always the case. Sometimes the Laptop boots and works fine just using the battery, but then upon opening a Programm (while under battery-power) it shuts of and gives the same error message again. If it decides to work the battery still lasts for 2-2.5 hours.
I'm really confused to what the problem is. It could be a power delivery problem, but it's still the original battery and laptop with only the HDD changed to a SSD.
I'm aware of it being a rather old machine, but selling it is my only hope for getting a new laptop for college, but I can't sell it in this state.
I'm at a lost and really really sad because of this issue. I'm sorry for any typos or grammar mistakes, I'm a non native english speaker.

Hi, There seems to be a problem with the power management on my T570. One of the problems I had with Vista is that when I ran a few games (Mostly Call of Duty 4 and World at War) in windowed mode in the multiplayer part, Aero would turn off until I closed the game. Is there a way to fix this?

Here are my current System Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
4GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 312MB

No mate, that's normal. It's only a problem if aero doesn't turn back on.

My Lenovo Yoga 710 is about 6 months old. The battery life has continually gotten worse. At first, it would last several hours before needing to be recharged. Now it won't turn on or run at all withouth being connected to the AC power supply.  Lenovo YOGA 71011ISK In the Lenovo Vantage app, under Hardware Settings > Power, it says the "Full Charge Capacity" is on 3.33 Wh, but the Design Capacity is 40 Wh.

My battery runs down in less than 2hrs and my computer is less than 2 months old. The computer is suposed to have a long battery life. My colleague has a similar product and his lasts 6 hrs. Mine is an Anthlon processor and his is an intel. could that be the problem?

A:My battery runs down too fast

Yes almost certainly. You have to make sure you have the system configured for longer battery life but in my experience an AMD is going to have a shorter battery life, but not 33% as long. I doubt your friend really gets 6 hours, or he or she has an extended life battery so it is not really apples to apples. I do get about 4.5-5 hours out of my mid-sized Intel-based laptop but I have the big sticking out extended battery. On an AMD laptop with a 14.1 or bigger screen and a regular (not ultra low voltage) processor and a standard 6 cell battery 2 hours is about what you are going to get. A comparable Intel might get 2.5 or 3 hours. There is a lot of hype about battery life out there but that is real world.

I have an older Compaq laptop that usually works fine, but now when I press the power button it just lights up a few of the lights, makes an odd beeping noise and immediately turns off. Nothing appears on the display and it never goes farther than that. I?ve tried a "hard reset" and reseating the ram modules, but neither worked and I have no idea where to go from here.

A:laptop turns on for 1-2 seconds then turns off

Welcome nabbed_clones.

Could you mention the make and model of your laptop please and explain what the odd beeping noise is (e.g., is it a quick one beep noise, or long beep noise, or many different beeps?) Any other sounds?

(Have you tried turning on the laptop with the mains power plugged in and the battery out?).

I have a Compaq M2000 with XP. Recently, the AC adaptor quit charging the battery and it won't run on AC by itself. I tried two other AC adaptors and still no power. Since it will still run on batteries, but not on AC and will not charge, I'm thinking it is the DC Jack? On the M2000, the DC adaptor jack actually plugs into the motherboard instead of being built into it. I've never noticed any problems before, it just suddenly quit charging and running on AC. Any ideas?

Hi, I have a 2 year old Elitebook 840 G1 that works great! I've updated to Windows 10 last september, and I'm happy with the significant performance and application improvements. The only problem i'm having is battery life. The original battery that came with the unit lasted only from Feburary 2014 to March 2015 before needing a charge every 2 hours, and i'm facing the same problem with my new genuine HP battery. I'm down to 3 hours between a charge on power saver mode. I only use my laptop for browsing the web at intervals and typing word documents.  I know this isn't an issue relating to Windows because the computer came with Windows 7 Pro installed, and the first battery died while I was using that. There have only been 63 full charging cycles so far, and I don't want to buy another battery. Please help! What i've tried:- Setting BIOS settings to "Default"- Run all component tests in BIOS (all passed)- unplugging everything and cleaning the contacts between the battery and the laptop- Checked the physical battery condition (like new) Both battery models are "CM03XL"Thanks! - Luke

Hi Luke Try updating the bios to at least F.33 if not already there. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5405097&swItemId=ob_160587_1&swEnvOid=419... The battery is adressed in F.33 You may also want to download HP suport Assistant and run the battery check that is in it. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5405097&swItemId=ob_156729_1&swEnvOid=419... The battery you referenced is a long life battery and carries a 3 year warranty.  Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again * * * * * Click the "Purple Thumbs Up Icon in the lower right corner of a post" to say thanks * * * * ** * * * * Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem * * * * *Regards,FreddyAlthough I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

I been recently having this problem where my battery run low and instead of warning me it turns off. What should i do ?

A:No Low battery warning, Just turns off.

Replace the battery. They don't last forever and this is what happens when they die.

I strongly recommend getting the OEM battery and not a cheap chinese knockoff. I never take chances with ink/toner and batteries. The real deal or nothing.

HiRecently upgraded to Windows 10 and I have an issue that when not using the AC adaptor and running on the battery the laptop shuts down randomly and not cleanly. I cannot get it to stay on for more than 5 minutes at a time and often it switches off as soon as I sign in. When using the AC adaptor I have no issues at all. Grateful for any ideas, otherwise I am going to try a fresh install. Thanks

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

A:Laptop battery not charging, battery not identified, 0% battery life

It sounds likely the charge circuit on the mainboard is damaged.  Contact Dell to have the mainboard replaced under warranty.
