BSOD during various activities

Q: BSOD during various activities

Hi all,

Have been having various problems resulting in BSOD ever since purchased laptop. No hardware has been added, it is as bought.
Windows 7 Home Premium is OEM but software such as Office 2010, McAfee AV, Firefox, Thunderbird and smaller utilities have been installed.

Note that in many cases, the crashes were occuring before and after installation of our software.

There are no specific triggers that I have been able to identify - BSOD may occur if running Office, Firefox, or doing nothing (come back to an unexpected shutdown message), but I believe that about half of the BSODs trace back to ntoskrnl.exe.

Have done the obvious stuff - repeated virus scans, keeping it up to date with Windows update and chkdsk. Not sure where to go now.

I have therefore followed the instructions and posted the resulting dump file/ performance monitor data. Any help would obviously be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: BSOD during various activities

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: BSOD during various activities

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (Cx05) probably a driver.
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have a Raid update its Driver.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5-7 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Driver Verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition.
Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is.
But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver.
Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows.
If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise.
Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like.
From my limited experimentation it makes the BSOD's come faster.
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

If you are using win 8 add these
- Concurrency Stress Test
- DDI compliance checking

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.
If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Thanks to JGriff2 & Usasma.

Recently bought all parts to build a computer, Built it all with no problems and everything was going smoothly until I started trying to watch youtube videos, download/play games, etc. When I get blue screen I get the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR stop code, I've tried things such as the Windows Memory Diagnostic to test my ram (passed the test twice) so i figured that wasn't the error. I've just begun to use FurMark to test my GPU but i haven't let it run for more than 2 mins. I also used the Intel Processor Diagnostic to test my CPU and it passed the test the one time I ran it. With all of this I cant pinpoint which hardware is causing the blue screens.

Note: I bought every part brand new from amazon except the GPU and Motherboard (which I got used from a friend) which makes me think its maybe these causing problems but I dont have anything to prove that.

Hello I have been having problems with BSODs and random lockups on my computer. I have figured out thta most of them occur during things that use network connections. Those things include stuff like watching youtube, browsing webpages, downloading torrents and regular downloads. Also this happens when I play League of Legends. Sometimes the display driver will crash before BSOD. I'm a bit at a loss here and help would be much appreciated

Greetings, Ive been getting this BSOD alot. It have happend in the past too. It is mostly when im about to play a game or just watch youtube videos. I have also been getting 3b(SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXPECTION) and 9f(DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE). If that is to any help. I need help as quick as possible. I dont like staying away from the computer too much.

Note: Some people has been telling me to Re-install windows. When i made a clean install i used a 3rd party application to download my drivers.(I didnt have my network driver setup) So that may cause my problem. Im thinking to run Driver Sweeper or Display Driver Uninstaller. I think the problem causing the BSODs is from the display driver. I have installed all the drivers from HP as soon as i started getting my BSODs. The old drivers may have some folders left causing the BSOD.

Link: https://wetransfer-eu1.s3.amazonaws....9%2BPjs8IEQ%3D

I didnt get the attachment to work so i uploaded it to wetransfer.

Your link doesn't work. Please try this way again - generally people will not download from 3rd party sites for security reasons:

1. Download the DM Log Collector application to your desktop by clicking the link below

DM Log Collector.exe

2. Run it by double-clicking the icon on your desktop, and follow the prompts.
3. Locate the .ZIP file that is created on your desktop, and upload it here in your next reply.

I have an HP 2730p tablet running retail version of 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, clean install. I have the latest Intel graphics drivers installed. My integrated Intel graphics is Mobile Series 4 Express, GMA 4500.

When I'm playing a Youtube music video in the background and I browse casually on Chrome, my computer will go into BSOD after about 2 minutes into the video. It is very reproducible, although sometimes I need to play the video twice to get it to BSOD. It has BSODed while not playing Youtube also.

Most of the BSOD errors are "IRQL Not Greater/Not Less or Equal Error," although I've also gotten a whole bunch of other ones (like "dxgmms1.sys"). I'm running out of ideas.

Attached are my Minidump files. Processor is 1.86 ghz L9400 mobile Penryn, temperature readings are around 38-42C, 2 gigs of RAM.

Thanks a lot!

I'm always skeptical about joining a site just to post a question, but here it goes:

I've have been getting BSODs for what has to be a couple years now. There are times that the frequency of blue screens would die down, but I can never pin point why it happens. There was a time where my computer would Blue Screen when I tried to stream a video, then that stopped. Then it would blue screen for some other reason.

I have an aging computer so I haven't bothered to do much about the blue screens. I would see suggestions about updating the drivers, but Windows says they are up to date (even though they say 2010). I try to delete all the drivers and have windows reinstall them. That doesn't really help the issue. I've gotten my computer repaired twice already, once for a shot hard drive at TigerDirect, and once to get my Power supply soldered by some guy off Thumbtack.

There are a bunch of other issues with my computer: the USB ports barely work, the sounds works maybe a few hours out of the week if I'm lucky, and I have to wrap my charger cable around the port in weird ways to get my computer to charge.

But anyways, posting the dump files from the last 2 BSODs, but I have plenty of Blue Screen dump files to to work with so if you want them, I can give them up. Just looking to see if there is something I can do besides just tolerating the Blue Screens until I can get a new computer.

Windows is up to date and as far as I know, so are the drivers for everything.

I've run a quick memtest with no result and after this is posted, I'll start another one that will run for a few hours.

Unfortunately I cannot suggest you to update it to the latest WHQL, as it is known to be unstable and sometimes buggy. Better you roll it back to an earlier known stable version.
Download and install Driver Fusion.
Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your nVidia display driver.
If it says the the free version of Driver Fusion cannot remove all the elements, stop there and follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
Boot normally now. Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, Drivers > Beta and Legacy; search there with your cards particulars for GeForce 306.23 Driver, dated 13.9.2012 and install it.
Then watch the situation. If crashes continue to occur, test your RAM modules for possible errors.

If it comes problem free, but still there are crashes, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.

For the past few weeks I have been experiencing random, albeit infrequent, BSOD's.

1. Occurred while using Thunderbird
2. Occurred while using Firefox
3. Occurred while playing Dota 2

I had several processes open behind the programs listed.

What tends to happen is that the mouse and/or keyboard stops working before the computer crashes. Then it stalls at the Bios screen and will not boot up without a restart.

A few things:
1. The CPU is overclocked, but the overclock was working well on prior installations.
The other systems used MBR as opposed to GPT which the current system uses. (Don't know if this matters).
2. I made a few changes to the system settings to try and optimize my SSD (see: The SSD Optimization Guide Redesigned | The SSD Review and SSD tweaker)

I plan to run Memtest and Prime95. I was just hoping someone might have some experience that could help me narrow down the problem.

I use my computer mostly for office work and have never experienced BSOD until about a month ago when I updated my drivers. One of the drivers I updated was the audio driver that immediately began causing problems including BSOD. I rolled back the driver update and reinstalled the driver which seemed to resolve the issue for a while but then after a week the BSOD began again and I have been unable to isolate the cause since then. I have continued to update firefox, antivirus, windows and other security software I have always used and these softwares never seemed to cause any problems before.

There are specific times when the BSOD occurs, mostly it is when I start the computer and during the first few minutes after windows loads or when I resume the computer from hibernate/sleep mode.

I have included the dump files and attached a screenshot.

Any help you can provide would be great.

Thank you

I recently bought a new pre-built PC and since day 1 it randomly keeps getting BSOD's and restarting. It's happened during random times whilst doing different things e.g. whilst I've been browsing, or playing a game, or running virus scans etc. All basic and small tasks. Sometimes it restarts without the BSOD, but the times the BSOD has appeared it has said different reasons for the crash such as IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, Memory Management, Kernel Securiy Check Failure, and Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap.

I've done a lot of solutions I've found on the Internet but none have worked so far.

I've attached the debug zip file.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A:Lots of random BSOD's from doing random activities.

Hello Raghib

Welcome to TenForums!

I've looked at the last three of your crash dump files, 2 of which refer to memory corruption, this does not in itself mean that your memory is bad but it would be worth checking it using Memtest86+. This can take a long time to complete 8 passes; possibly a full day for your 16GB.

One file had a reference to a driver error:

ffffd000`22ffa358 fffff800`87f3f995Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\nvlddmkm.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for nvlddmkm.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for nvlddmkm.sys
This would suggest it is worth ensuring the NVidia drivers are up to date or try to reinstall them. If you do this, uninstall everything and just load back the driver file only by selecting custom install.

Recently two of my PC's have had unexplainable errors that appear and disappear with no explanation, since I hate being left in the dark I enabled the "create boot log" feature in windows, but I want to take it one step further, I want to be able to keep a log file of absolutely everything that is done on the PC every day. Every web page visited, every file changed or renamed, any change to the registry, if it happens I want to know about it. I'm currently looking at a piece of software called spybuddy, but norton classifies it as spyware due to the nature of its purpose(monitoring and logging PC activity). Does anybody know of a trustworthy piece of software that I can use for this purpose or if spybuddy is safe?you can check it out here or you can google it to see what it is http://www.exploreanywhere.com/products/spybuddy

A:Log PC activities

I was waiting to see if anyone answered your post that had personal experience with the software that you mentioned. I've not used it, but I doubt that having the info that it provides is going to help you chase down the issue. Programs like these typically provide screenshots based on a time interval that you select. It is easy to miss screens.

"I want to be able to keep a log file of absolutely everything that is done on the PC every day."
Install process monitor and you might see 1000s of things happening each second. Too much for one person to research "absolutely everything" that goes on.

Maybe you should make a post in this sub-forum...
System Security - Windows 7 Forums
...and see if those experts can point you down the correct path for troubleshooting your issue.

Hi SeanL,

Welcome to the 10forums

Please check MSI for BIOS updates.

Because all the recent crashes are memory access violations but none did flag a driver I would like you to run driver verifier to catch the offending driver.

Diagnostic Test

Please make a backup of your important files and get your rescue media or create one.
Please create a restore point.
Please follow this tutorial to run driver verifier.

Driver verifier stresses your drivers and will crash your pc if any driver fails due to a violation.

Driver verifier should be performed for a max of 48 hours, or when you have a bluescreen, whatever comes first.

If driver verifier has found a violation and you can't get back into windows normally, try to boot into safe mode and reset in safe mode driver verifier, or in the troubleshooting options open command prompt and type verifier /reset.

Your system will act very sluggishly while driver verifier is enabled, this is normal as your drivers will be being subjected to heavy testing in order to make them crash.

Please fill in your system specsPlease follow this tutorial and download the tool. The tool will give you detailed information about your system specs, please fill in your system specs more completely including PSU, cooling and other used stuff. Please note that the PSU, cooling and other used stuff are NOT mentioned in the tool. How to fill in your system specs:

I have an ATA Center on a Domain Controller installed (Server 2012 R2) and on the same Server an ATA Lightweight Gateway; (ATA Version is 1.9 with Update 1)

The Server is a physical server with Windows Nic Teaming enabled;
I tried from several Clients to create some suspicious activities (with NSLOOKUP and PsExec.exe) but no sesults at all.
Is windows NIC Teaming supported by ATA ?
Does the ATA Lightweight Gateway need also port mirroring like an ATA Gateway ?

In my virtuel Environment everything is working.

Dear friends,
I have a problem with a specific public open hotspot so, as a first thing, I do not have access to the router settings.
The fact is that all non-browser activities (i.e. Skype) are decent, I must say sometimes even quick and reliable. But all browser activities, with all browsers (Edge, Explorer, Chrome, etc), are very slow and sometimes simply I cannot do anything.
My computer works perfectly with every other connection, so quite possibly the problem is in the public hotspot itself, but I would like to know if, in your informed opinion, it is possible that this public hotspot has some kind of strict filter for surfing on internet but not on the whole bandwidth I can use, and if there is something I can do to improve things from my computer. Because, and this is my main doubt, it seems strange to me that I can make video calls on Skype with good video quality right when, at the same time, I cannot even load Google homepage.
Thank you all!

When I look at flash videos (on gt ) or try to download something, then they freeze after some 15 seconds. They just stop.

When I am watching a video the bar just stops and freezes and when I download something it just stops doing anything and shows me the same 15% for an hour.

This problem occurs on any browser.

What could be wrong?

What I've tried so far:
*Phoned my internet provider who didn't know anything.
*Frequent anti-virus and spyware checks. Nothing.

So my issue is that at my work we are using Outlook over an exchange server. The customer service reps want a simple way to look at all emails that were sent to a contact. Can this be done by some sort of logging for the Activities tab for the contact? Any suggestions other than that?

A:Outlook Contact Activities Log

Another way to do it would be to create a rule for all messages sent to person and in that rule specify that those emails are moved to a special folder.

...or at least I can't explain them.

Anyways, I've been having weird stuff happen to my 19" Envision monitor.
(1280x1024 5:4)

It will randomly pop open the menu and start turning down the brightness out of nowhere. (Without me pressing the button.)

This happened last year and went away after a couple of days like nothing.
I didn't do anything to fix it what so ever, and now it's starting to do it again.

All of the buttons function properly when it's not changing settings by itself, and none of the buttons are pressed down or damaged.

It will happen randomly too, from 5 seconds in between brightness changes, all the way to 5 minutes. What the hell could this be? It's like my monitor is possessed.

A:Unexplainable Monitor Activities

It's very probably possessed by bad hardware. The surface of the buttons may look intact but their microswitch mechanisms (behind) may not be. It may not even be the buttons themselves but the circuitry which they attach to.

In any case, it's not a software issue. Very few monitor drivers have the capability to pop open and control those OSD monitor menus. Unless yours just happens to be in the "very few" category, there is absolutely no theoretical way for that to be caused by anything inside your Windows installation - it's pure hardware.

If the monitor is no longer under warranty and you're reasonably handy with a screwdriver, try opening it up and jiggling the front button assembly around just a little... reseat the connectors (if any)... that sort of thing.

I've noticed some random pop-ups that seem to pop up when I open a browser or go to a new website, etc... I have a sneaky feeling it isn't actually online, however, just triggered by what I do. I think it might also be triggered by what I do offline, as well. Close to 2 weeks ago I realized I had downloaded some malware, but it was pretty obviously a certain type. I can't remember the name of it, but it was an fake anti-virus alert that was disguised to look like a windows program. I realized this right away and looked it up. I found a program (malwarebytes anti-malware) that seemed to find it and remove it.

Since then I've had some trouble with my internet, it won't open pages or run certain functions (like in my email) and I just thought I needed to restart my computer, which I did, but it didn't change. It wasn't until today that I noticed the pop-ups. So far I've had at least 5 or 6, 2 or 3 of them were the same one.

Here is my log, please let me know if you need any more information. I would really appreciate help with this since it is a computer at my place of work.

We are running ATA for a month in now in our production domain. Now it starts reporting various "Suspicion of identity theft based on abnormal behavior" activities on the ATA Attack Timeline and most of these activities involve servers in our RDS
farm (the specified user didn't log on to that RDS server before). This means these actions are false positives in our case.
For the time being I configured the "short term lease" subnet option for these servers, is this the way to go or is  there a better way to handle this?

Hello. I have recently purchased a new laptop which runs Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. I am considering whether or not I should return it, and I only have a few days left, so time is of the essence.

So far I have found 3 things that destroy my DSL connection: Closing the laptop (Yes, the simple act of rotating my laptop monitor always destroys my connection), playing WarRock (after a random amount of time my internet will die), and modifying the percent of bandwidth for my QoS packet scheduler. Every time my internet goes down, I have to call my Internet Service Provider in order to fix it.

I don't know if this will help but I can't run Doom 3 demo even as an administrator with the latest drivers for my GeForce 8200.

A:Various activities wrecking my DSL connection

hmm, you could try checking your power saving settings (it may be them causing the problem)...

- Open the control panel
- Click Power Options
- Click Advanced power options
- Click the current power scheme thing
- In the node thingy find "wireless adaptor settings" or whatever else
- open it up and make sure it's always on full performance (or not on "turn off" or something)...

Good evening.

I have two laptops, one that I use for gaming, and one for personal use. My gaming laptop is currently the infected one, and it won't let me access the internet at all, so I must use my personal to do all of this.

I have attempted to remove it (meaning Cycbot and all that it has downloaded) twice now by running Windows 7 in Safe Mode with Microsoft Security Essentials and have attempted to use HijackThis to help myself. Malwarebytes is not currently working for me in Safe Mode, otherwise I'd use it before all else.

Any assistance would be appreciated -- I'd really like to get back to playing World of Warcrack today.

we had a storage infrastructure problem and during this the ATA Center was restarted unexpected, perhaps the gateways too, but this ist not so bad.
After that, the ATA service closed every time unexpected with the eventid 7031.mongo service was running.
I've checked the db with the following command:
.\mongo.exe ATA
Because every entry (collections, views, objects) was showing 0, i typed the following command to recover an old SystemProfile like discribed in the desaster receovery docu (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/advanced-threat-analytics/disaster-recovery)

mongo.exe ATAdb.SystemProfile.remove({})exitmongoimport.exe --db ATA --collection SystemProfile --file "<SystemProfile.json backup file>" --upsert

Now, the center can start succesful, but there are no more old activities.
Is there any chance to recover the old data? The mongodb data files are still there, with up to 20-30GB.

I just joined the site today as I was seeking some answers. I have to first say what a first rate place this is, lots of good practical info here.

Yesterday when my wife was viewing email from a listserv she called me over and the email message window was flashing as if the messages continously reloaded. When I tried to launch a Norton AV scan the drop down menu did the same thing, flashing -or opening and closing continously and I was unable to run the scan. I finally had to turn off the power to shut windows down.

I used my work PC and downloaded the free AV product by grisoft, as well as several of those individual 'hot fixes' for specific viruses that I read were around and that indicated might be able to be launched by viewing an infected email or might try to shutdown AV software.

When I started windows I again noticed problems with things like windows explorer and had to restart. When I attempted to load the virus fixes from the floppy two of the files were listed as 'not valid Windows files' on trying again I got a message to the effect 'the disk in A: is not formatted do you want to format now' I used the power switch to turn off the system and then I managed to run all the specific virus tests and also installed an ran AVG and the spybot software from my CD -not before first getting a similar 'the disk in drive H: is not formatted do you want to format' even though this is not a writable drive. Thats only teenage boys...:haha:.

You can ask your ISP, I believe some internet service providers do allow tracking and blocking of websites, and certain programs too, just look at school computers these days. You can check your child's browsing history, but you can erase that quite easily. I can't help but think i'm missing something here, I might update this when its not 1:00 in the morning. Of course, it might be a good idea to prevent your child from going to adult sites, like not letting them stay up very early in the morning with their computer.

So how do I properly export and/or import these from my Outlook 2003 contacts??

My problem is a little complicated. My network components are as follows:

Server: Windows NT Server 4.0
Clients : mixture of Windows XP, Windows 98, Mac OS X,
AntiVirus: Symantec Corporate Edition 8.1 (constantly updated 3 times weekly)

Since last week, my office network seemed to get slower and slower with each passing day. It got worse and worse each day, so bad that even network printing seems to take ages. Internet connectivity is so slow its frustrating.

Looking at my network switches I can see quite a lot of broadcasts going on in the network (based on the blinking lights). I checked with Ethereal and, indeed, there were a lot of ARP broadcasts going on (about 7-15% of the total data transactions). Problem was, the broadcasts were coming from random PCs in the office! I tried listing down the source IPs but found myself listing ALMOST ALL the IPs in the office.

Thinking it was the work of worms, viruses or spywares, I worked overnight and cleaned EVERY SINGLE PC in the office. I used updated versions of Stinger, Trendmicro free virus scanner, and Spybot Search & Destroy to carefully clean each PC. Sadly, even this does not seem to solve the issue. I still see ARP broadcasts and the network is STILL very slow.

Can someone PLEASE advise me what to do... I'm at my wits end.

A:Is this the symptom of worm activities in a network?

Sorry did anyone is the office plug in a cable to the switch which creates a loopback connection in return which creates a broadcast storm in the network.
