Connected to wifi, PC says 'internet access' but can't browse internet

Q: Connected to wifi, PC says 'internet access' but can't browse internet

Hey everyone, sorry if this is in wrong area.

So today I bought a secondhand computer. It's a Toshiba Satelite L875D-S7230.

When I connect it to my home wifi it connects no problem and says 'internet access' when I hover over the icon. However when I open open google chrome or internet explorer and type in a site, it takes a little while then says this page cannot be displayed or this web page is unavailable.

The guy I bought it from says he had no issues. And I know it's not the internet because I'm using the internet to post this from phone.
I've tried a few ideas that worked for other people on other forums like using cmd box but to no avail.

Has anyone got any idea why the computer is being such a turd?? Can anyway give advice on how to fix the problem? Thank you all so much!

Preferred Solution: Connected to wifi, PC says 'internet access' but can't browse internet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,

It's my first time to post a topic here, but i am not a newbie to BC.. I am Jerald, IT head in a hardware company. I want to share my problem to all you readers..
I have a desktop computer that has a internet connection, or let's say it is my server.. I am using D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router which has an IP Address 192.168.1.1. This router is not a wireless router. I bought a wireless router named Linkysys.. I configured it using Automatic Configuration -DHCP, with a router name WRT54G.. i used the D-link router ip address as it's gateway (192.168.1.1). I disabled the DHCP server.. in other words, i am using a 2 router, a non-wireless connected directly to my desktop computer and a wireless router connected to that D-LINK broadband router..I tested the connection using Windows XP laptop and by then it works.. I can connect to my wireless network and browse the internet.. On the properties of my loptop wireless network i configured it as "obatain IP address automatically and "Used the Following DNS Server' i used Preferred DNS: 124.217.127.238 and Alternate DNS: 202.138.128.54. I click on the "ADVANCED" button and add a gateway using my D-LInk router IP address 192.168.1.1. Suddenly one of our customers want to connect in our wirless network.. He is carrying a Windows Vista laptop.. I connect it to linksys wireless network but i can't connect to internet. obviously it has an X on its connection to the internet. But if i look on it's wireless... Read more

A:My Vista was connected to a wifi network but can't browse the internet

I had simmilar wierdness with my new linksys wireless router until I ran their included setup wizard. after that everything was fine.
aparently it flips some internal switch allowing the thing to work properly.

Have you tried that?

Also - the laptop connected to the wireless router. can he get to local company sites and/or PCs? ... if not, try rebooting.

Alright, so this is my dilemma. I am connected to the internet through a wired connection. I am also setting up a wireless printing network. Here is the problem, whenever I connect to the wireless router so that I can share my printer, I cannot browse on the internet. The vista network logo on the toolbar also loses the "earth" in the symbol, but yet says that I am connected to local and internet.

Now what really confuses me is that I can still use AIM, but yet both firefox and IE does not connect to the internet. As soon as I disconnect from the Wireless network, my internet comes right back. I have searched for hours on this and could not find much other than changing my metric setting, which also didn't change anything. I believe it is a vista setting, because others with the same basic setup, except for the fact that they have XP, can still connect to the WiFi and browse the internet through the LAN.

Here is a link to a screenshot of my computer specs: http://img378.imageshack.us/my.php?image=specsht8.jpg

And here are my IPCONFIG results when connected to both Wired and Wireless:

A:Solved: Cannot browse the internet wired when connected to a separate WiFi

The direct solution to your problem is to assign a static IP address (make sure it is outside the wireless router Dhcp server's address range) and mask, leaving the Gateway and DNS blank.

Windows XP defaults to the wired connection when multiple Gateways are specified, which may explain why the other PCs do not have the same problem.

There is a reason why you need to use two different networks?

Hello.

Firstly let me apologise if this question is repeated elsewhere but I could not find anything identical to it.

I have an Acer laptop and connect from this to the internet via a CDMA connection provided by the local (I live in Thailand) version of a Novatel MiFi 2200 modem. This works just fine for internet browsing and I simultaneously use P2P software to download UK TV stuff.

I also have a wired network in my house and on this I have a 3Gb NAS drive. There is a wireless router on the network but I am outside of it's range.

When I connect the network cable to connect to the NAS drive, I am no longer able to browse the internet. BUT the P2P software still carries on working as before. So therefore my laptop is still connected to the internet via the Wifi network.

So why does my browser think otherwise. Normally I use Google Chrome but I have also tried IE and this suffers from the same fate.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Alan

Network Adapter: AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20) Atheros

So 4 days ago while i was sleeping i had left my dekstop still running.i woke up and tried to open mozilla but it wouldnt load any sites. So after having a technician check my desktop he could not identify the problem. problem is that both my brother's and mother's pcs can browse and use the internet via wifi+ethernet mine cannot browse or connect to any programs like steam or diablo3.exe. the weird thing is that on the bottom right corner next to the timezone settings it says that i am connected to the internet with internet access. what i am trying to prevent is to format the pc because i will lose alot of stuff that are essential to my work. is there a way to understand what is going on? when i run a trouble shooting it says something about peer service not running but i couldnt find an answer on google :/

running windows7 ultimate 32bit. i had internet and everything worked just fine 4 days ago. btw the initial search on the google gave me something about norton product 360 and i can recall i had this advertisement of a norton product that i should download and register but i always clicked remind me later. cheers for any help

A:Connected to Network no Internet access/Browse Sites.

You will want to go into Windows services to make sure that the peer networking service is started and set to manual.

There should be three different peer services there. You need to type services.msc into the run box in order to open up Windows services.

As for the connectivity problem. You might try resetting winsock for that.

Download that file and to run it right-click on winsockfix.bat and click on ?Run as administrator?.

I took my laptop to the computer repair shop and was advised that the wireless card wouldn't have to be replaced. They did some testing by using their USB dongle and it did the same. Both were able to get to the router but wouldn't connect to the internet. They said the issue is either the configuration or the settings. I have tried all the ipconfig commands but still not getting to the internet. Would someone walk me through the troubleshooting steps and eventually get to the internet?

From google browser, it says '...server IP address could not be found' DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

Ping www.google.com
Error: Ping request could not find host wwww.google.com. Please check the name and try again.

ipconfig / release
ipconfig /renew
Error: An error occurred while renewing interface wireless network Connection 3: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
I don't know what device it is referring to. from the device manager, the network adapter properties says 'This device is working properly.' Uninstalled and installed many times.

Is there a way to reset to factory settings?

Hi guys, I have this problem that's been giving me a headache these days... I have a Dell XPS L502x with Intel centrino n6230 in tow.
Well, the laptop was working fine and all but started to have this weird connection drops in my work now and then, I blamed the router. Then it started loosing connection in my home too, it shows that the WiFi is connected and when I hover over the WiFi icon it says "internet access" but whenever I tried to access a webpage it won't connect... I blamed the network adapter and tried reinstalling and reinstalling the drivers and changing settings but none of it worked.
It literally is driving me crazy, but before I refresh the system I wanted to see if you guys can help me out!
Thanks in advance

A:HELP! WiFi connected but cannot access internet!

If you really do have internet access you should be able to ping a DNS server located somewhere outside your network. open a command prompt, Start > run > enter "cmd" and hit enter. type in "ping 8.8.8.8" if you get a response in replies you know that its technically working and connected to the internet.

The C-prompt message shows you neither have an IP or a connected adapter. Try deleting your existing adapter configuration and reconnecting from scratch. Also, when done run ' c:\ping google.com -t ' or replace google.com with anything else. Also try a Wired connection to figure out if it's a SW or HW problem.

Okay, so yesterday, I came home to find that my computer could not connect to Google.com, even though my WiFi was shown as connected with internet access. Skype couldn't connect either. Actually, to be specific, the internet would be accessible for a couple mines at a time, though it would be slow. Another computer in our house is having the same issue, but my tablet does NOT. I take my tablet with me to school. Anyway, I've perused the web for any solution, and have found none. I have tried...

Static IP
Flushed DNS
Reset TCP/I (something like that)
Rebooting
System Restore to before issue.
Virus scan (clean)
Disabling Local Area Connection in favor of wireless area connection

I am unable to release and renew my IP, since it says no action can be performed while media is disconnected. I cannot think of anything else. Oh, and since I'm on my tablet, fetching the ipconfig /all would be a bit time-consuming.

Please help!

Hello there,

Im encountering this strange problem for a couple of months now and at first i thought it might be an ISP issue.
But i realise it may not be.
The wifi icon occassionally has an exclamation mark on it indicating no internet access despite being connected to the network.
When i run my mouse over the icon, it starts identifying with the network and i get access back again.
I notice it drops after i leave the PC dormant or dont move the mouse. This has disallowed me to download anything large without disconnecting halfway.

Has anyone experienced this before?

First off what OS are you using? You specified Windows XP. If you are using XP, you are in the wrong forum. We need the full system Spec's on your machine. That means you will have to download Speccy from Speccy - System Information - Free Download

If you are using Windows XP. You can get help at the sister forum Windows XP Forums

Recently both computers have been experiancing problems where it will be connected to the internet for a while and it will let you browse the internet then after a while it will not load up any pages yet it will state that it is connected to the internet. Even if i reconnect it to the internet it will not work however with windows 7, it works perfectly and i havent experianced any problems. Also i've noticed when you restart the computer it seems to work again untill it decides to fail. I have tried to search on the internet for a solution but most state it as being a problem with switching from a bloatware app like norton to a better antivirus. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me out with this problem as its quite annoying. thanks in advance for any help.

arj

EDIT: I forgot to mention; I have tried alternative wireless adaptors, i've tried reinstalling the drivers, ive tried different usb ports, ive tried connecting it via a wired connected and it worked however it's not really practical to have a long wire running throughout the house.

If you have any addons, disable it. Also if you have yahoo companion toolbar, remove it.

I use a wireless network in the home for media centre purposes (PS3, 2 pcs) and i use a 3g usb modem on the pc that i require internet on whenever that maybe. Problem i have is that when the WLAN is up and i connect to the 3g modem i cant see anything on the internet. Is it something to do with the default gateway? or is it something with my browser? gonna check right now if i can ping and work out if its possibly DNS related will post back in a sec. Ta.

EDIT: It appears to be DNS related as i can ping 4.2.2.2 but if i ping google.com or .co.uk its not getting a response. Where should i be looking to resolve this?

EDIT:
This is a grab of the ping while both wifi and usb are connected and then the succesful ping is the wifi disabled. What on earth is going on here obviously the ip address is completly different on the succesful ping could this be something to do with a proxy??

A:Solved: When i have wifi and 3g usb modem connected i cannot access internet

Your first suspicion (Default Gateway) is almost certainly the reason. When Windows has a choice of Default Gateways it chooses the wired over the wireless. But if they are the same type--both yours are wireless--I don't know if the selection is random or if there is an algorithm.

Anyhow, the solution is your situation is to assign a static IP to the Wi-Fi connection, leaving the Default Gateway and DNS null (blank). The IP you choose has to be in the router's IP range but outside its Dhcp server's address range.

Hi everybody!

I would be happy if anybody could help me solve my network connection problems. I am trying to connect my laptop to internet via wireless router and modem. It successfully connected to router there is no internet access. I have tried wire connection directly to the modem, and it worked. I also know the wireless router is working fine due to we have phones that wirelessly connected to the router, and they are also getting internet access.

Please help!

A:Laptop wifi connected to router but no internet access

I would firstly, double check security and you typed your passkey in right.. sounds dumb but has fixed many peoples errors. Also make sure you didn't block your MAC Adrees.

If still no go, turn off the router security then try to connect.

If no go try updating the drivers.

If still no go then we got issues.

My notebook Dell Inspiron N5010 running Windows 7 Home Basic did not get internet access inspite of being connected via wifi network. Tried connection via cable, same problem. After visiting Tech Support Guy forum and resetting winsock and ipv4 and ipv6 without success I got to a solution just restoring the system to a point some two months ago! While in the restoration process I've been informed about programs installed in between that would require re-installation. Thus, I came to that the "no internet access" problem was due to one of the removed programs. I will try to determine which was the villain by reinstalling them one by one. If I got to the devil one I will report here.

I'm having an issue with 1 of our laptops, Since yesterday haven't been able to access websites. I'm able to connect to our wifi but no internet access. I tried rebooting router, unplugging router, renewing ip addresses. In the past had a windows xp laptop that used to get conflicting ip addresses with 1 of our other devices. But when this would occur it wouldn't actually show as connected to the wifi, it would just say acquiring over and over.

Sometimes if I reboot the laptop i can get to a site for about a minute, then after that I'd lose the connection.

Any ideas? No issues with our other computers, devices.

Have you tried to reinstall the WiFi driver for the laptop?

See if completely forgetting your network then reconnecting helps.

I've recently gotten a new internet service and router (Netcomm NB16WV). I connect to wifi easily, however, at random times, I will lose internet access despite still being connected to wifi. After about 10 or 15 odd minutes, internet access would normally return (restarting the router also helps). This problem has been occurring for the past month every day.

I have attached a screenshot of Xirrus running while I am unable to access the internet. I run 'connection test' a couple of times while it's down, and it always shows a 20% - 100% ping loss, and sometimes the DNS lookup fails (but most of the time it just says % ping loss).

I have internet connection right now.

Thanks in advance!

A:Losing internet access sporadically, despite being strongly connected through wifi

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site.

Try these two tests independently, and then together if neither helps ...

Try channel 1 (also requires setting Channel Bandwidth to 20 MHz).

Try with encryption disabled. If this works then try WPA-PSK (not WPA2).

Hello there,

I'm having a real hard time keeping a steady internet connection, I'm lucky if I get 15 mins losing internet, then I have to either reset or disconnect and reconnect again... very frustrating..

so before posting here, I tried many, many solutions but no luck. (TCP log reset etc., changing DNS server, deleting the networ and the network location and re-adding, did a virus scan but nothing showed up, I re-installed and tried to update the network card, multiple restarts and tweaks, deleted some softwares....)... but NOTHING!
I feel like a doctor who cannot figure out a diagnosis or the patient will die! Literally because if this does not work soon I will throw away this laptop..

Vista64, HP HDX18, Intel 5100 AGN network card < (very problematic from what I read)..

Now when I connect via Ethernet cable it's fine!
ALSO, when I connect my Android phone to the same wireless network I get perfect connection and I can stream YT videos while my laptop struggles to open a page

Please share some tips ore ideas that might help!

Thanks and much appreciated.

I installed a parental control program for Internet Explorer, but it was not allowing AOL to dial any numbers. Also, after shutting down the AOL, Windows XP would shut down the parental control program saying that it was malfunctioning. So I decided to delete the parental control program from my hard drive, and I used the uninstall program of the parental control program to uninstall it. After the uninstall, I noticed that I could dial and use the AOL browser as usual, but I could not use Internet Explorer. Any web pages that I tried to visit using IE would not display, and Internet Explorer would say, “This page cannot be displayed.” This is the same message that you get when you are not connected to the internet at all. Apparently, IE cannot recognize an internet connection when AOL is on. I contacted AOL, and they instructed me to a lot of things, e.g., resetting the IE settings to default, rebuilding the AOL adaptor using the AOL’s System Information utility, doing system restores, turning off AOL’s own parental control, and finally even reinstalling AOL. But none of these solved the problem.

The AOL guys told me that the parental control program must have done something to IE program files, or it may have done something in the registry that they cannot figure out. I searched the Microsoft data base and found and article (Article ID # 238550) titled “Cannot Browse the Internet Using Internet Explorer While Connected to AOL.” However, this article is for IE version... A:[SOLVED] Cant browse internet but connected to internet.

and welcome to the Forum

What Real Time protection are you using?

Let's try this:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi there:
I have a weird problem here.
I have two laptops. Laptop A is my personal one using at home. Laptop B is my company laptop...The problem is about my laptop B
When I use my laptop B at work, everything works perfectly... When I get
home, this laptop could connect to Skype but just can not browse website...
I used ping and found that it can only ping IP address instead of websites...
I first thought that maybe the DNS server was screwed . Then I used my
laptop A to test, Laptop A and Laptop B have the identical settings, both
use Automatic DHCP server, settings on the TCP/IP are identical...
Laptop A works fine, can ping website and browse websits with a chime....
I then followed the Instructions and posted the following info and hope someone
here could give me some hints...BTW, I have the genuine windows xp pro cd.

thanks

I am facing a kind of weird problem!! My Sony Vaio was getting connected to my Home wifi network and I could access Internet without any problem. Its been few days now that I can't access Internet though it shows connected. It does connect with the Wifi without any issue and even show the full signal like before, but actually there's no internet access. No browsers (IE,Chrome,FF) load any webpage, no messengers work.
I am using Windows 8 Pro,
antivirus-Avast home edition
Vaio model-VPCEB1E0E
Can anyone please shed some light on this issue?

Thanks in advance

Do you get internet access with an ethernet connection?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

This is haunted me forever, about a half a year to be exact. Anywho, here's the story.

A half a year ago I got a serious virus and had to do a system recovery. That went sucessful and all but once we tried to get the internet up and running, it wouldn't. I tried and tried but nothing would work. So I left it and had to use a wired connection or my mom's desktop. (Which is a horror. Lol)

Every so often I had tried, but with no luck. I eventually went to Best Buy about two months and asked them what may be the problem. The guy said that I may not have installed the drivers from my manufacture's website. So I went home and did. That's about when I was able to get my internet to connect. Yay, right? Wrong. I couldn't browse. And so we're at today. I figured I might as well make this snow day count by trying to get my computer straightened out. I did another restore and that went fine. I went to my manufacture's website and downloaded a few select drivers that had to do with LAN. Before the installation of the drivers, I tried to connect and I couldn't even connect. After I installed them, I was able to connect. Finally I got internet and able to browse! But wait, no I can't.

So I can connect to the internet, but I cannot browse. Great.

Could anyone help me? I'd appriciate it greatly. I'll give you some of my computer info and if you need more, just ask.

Thanks in advance!

Out of the blue one day, I was using the internet on my other laptop when it started acting up. Chrome and Firefox would sproradically be unable to connect, until they outright could not connect at all. However, my torrents in qbittorrent and utorrent were able to continue up/downloading (though very slowly) and other devices and computers are able to connect to my wifi.

I've tried resetting my IP address, disabling firewalls, and some other stuff, but I really have no idea what's going on. It's been like this for a couple weeks now, luckily it's not a computer I have to use often. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm running Win7 x64

If it means anything, I have also had previous issues where utorrent was unable to make a connection on known working torrents (other computers on network could download them easily), even when my browsers were working.
