I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. Looking to get a new SSD but in NVMe configuration. a. Does my L450 support NVMe boot up? What type of NVMe does my Thinkpad support?  I thinking of getting the Samsung 860 Evo.b. Is connecting the new NVMe and running transfer SSD software the Windows 10 will recognize the drives and do the transfer?    Serial NumberF0ATPKGPart Number: 20D5503800 Thanks for any help you can give in this matter!

I have a
HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
64bit with Windows Vista Home premium
Recently I had a friend take it and wipe it to start fresh.
when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

PATH
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

PATHEXT
.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH;.MSC

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Hi,

I'm thinking about building my own PC, but I don't quite understand what anti-static precautions should be taken. Obviously, nothing will be plugged in, but is there anything I'm missing or not understanding?
Also, are anti-static wrist bands essential? Also, would carpet work as a good working area?

Thanks

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

Hello,

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,
Bob

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

modules in one bank work with 60ns modules in another ... Read more

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

A:32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 but got nervous about it so I decided to do a fresh install of Windows XP Home Premium on my other old laptop first. This was to gain a bit of experience and also to ensure I have a working PC in the event of a glitch in the fresh install of Windows 8.1 - just wanted to be sure I could continue to get work done in the interim if something went wrong. However, doing a fresh install of XP turned out more problematic than I thought, for the following reasons:
I had no CD - never did. Neither Compaq nor Circuit City gave me one. I lost the restore media (if I ever created it back in 2004 or so).
I spent a lot of time researching slipstreaming an install including all the service packs but could feel confident in none of the sources of the software on the web nor in my ability to properly follow the processes for slipstreaming
I spent a lot of time researching sources on the web for the straight XP OS (without the service packs) but none gained my trust
There is conflicting info out there about whether it is necessary to install SP1 and then SP2 before installing SP3
I finally decided the answer was that going straight to the SP3 service pack was the path I would try but could not find a trusted source of SP3

allbenatt, thanks for sharing your experience!

There was a long running XP Topic where the OP, also with an HP computer, could have used your solution. Actually the way you installed, being it was to another partition, it was formatted prior to you taking this action, so it didn't really need it again. Too, all OS's requires some type of formatting of the partition to install, in this case it was likely NTFS. No, it wasn't the type of XP format that would take hours to complete on some larger drives, which was probably more secure of an erase than today's quick formatting, but one was one.

So how did the OS install process go? Install to the partition next to it? I'm curious about this, and may try it on my last XP computer just to see it in action. It's 60GB in size, but I could shrink the actual XP partition to 25GB or so, and there's a Recovery partition at the end. However, many doesn't have that, could have once been there, but was removed, tempting to some because in 2003/04, 40GB HDD's were the norm. Actually the one I have came with that size one, but I replaced it with a 60GB 7200 rpm one, the OEM one ran at 4200 rpm (or in that range).

That SP3 download of over 300MB, I've had that on CD since 2010. Anytime I install XP these days, seems like Windows Update won't connect w/out it (an error message will show). Installing SP3 fixes this. Though here as of late, haven't done much XP installing, other than some virtual machines for me t... Read more

If you use a router, you can log onto it and block address from there. Otherwise it depends on which browser you use. You should also be able to block sites with your anti-virus program as well.

To diable items in Windows, open Device Manager and right click the item, choose Diable this Device. To disable in the Dell bios, When the DELL logo appears, press <F2> immediately to enter the bios.

I have Sympatico DSL internet, just converted from Rogers recently (this is in Canada). My internet works fine now, but sometime it justs disconnects out of nowhere and reconnects when I click on links or open another IE window or something.

Also when it does that the dial up connection thing will come up but when I click connect on it, it never works -_- I think it has to do with my router or something, so I have to wait for the pop up that tells me to "Connect" or "Work offline" in order to reconnect.

One of my friends who also uses Sympatico, says that it disconnects when there's incoming phone calls, I thought that was my case too but turns out it isn't. It's just him...he also has a really slow connection and disconnects very easily...

Please help us T_T, thanks in advance.

Oh and btw, I've been trying to figure out which ISP is better: Rogers or Sympatico... Before I was under the impression that cable would be better... But right now it seems like Sympatico is better because I can download faster and when I'm using BitComet, it doesn't slow down IE nearly as much as Rogers did, with Rogers it takes like...30 sec. - 1 min. to load a page? But with Sympatico it's at most ~10 sec. slower, usually only around 5 sec.

So, those who know of or tried these two ISP please comment on which one you think is better.

DSL does not use a "standard modem" at all so this box should not even be popping up. My thought is check the I.E. settings on your PC and see what its set to in the Connections tab. (I would make sure its set to never dial a connection this should stop any dial up networking prompting).

I have not used either service but I do know that typically Cable broadband tends to offer a bit more bandwidth for the same price. The drawback is the cable is shared bandwidth so this could be a problem depending on who is doing what.

Were you running these "tests" from behind a router or direct connected? Usually I recommend 2 tests one each and also I recommend using a true bandwidth test source and not a torrent because with torrents your only as fast as what your connecting to (BTW torrent talk is prohibited here so don't post on having problems with it please). Hello.
On Windows 8 I had a local account and was only signed it to the mail/contacts app and that worked just fine.
But after updating to Windows 8.1 I can't figure out how to do this. It is possible?
What I don't really like about setting up my account as my Microsoft account is that it logs you in to everything like Skype etc. And there does not seem to be a way to log out from skype only without switching back to a local account.
I am also wondering something else. Back in february I bought Windows 8 when it was really cheap, that upgrade deal.
I'm guessing it is still a full license though, since I can do a clean install using that license and .ISO I got?
My brother have access to MSDN with free student licenses and I can download a 8.1 .ISO from there. I just don't want to have to install 8 and then do the update to 8.1 every time I need to reinstall Windows.
Do you think my license will work using the 8.1 .ISO?

A:Questions regarding 8.1

Hi there and welcome to Eight Forums!

Windows 8.1 uses a Microsoft Account as general account. So it's no longer possible to have only a local account. You can however create a local account after you've logged on with a Microsoft Account. Then you can decide only to use that local account.

If you have an upgrade licence and you want to do a full reinstall of Windows you can't simply install the ISO from 8.1 and use your key. You must install the origional Windows first (I guess that would be 7?) and then upgrade to 8.0 Then you can upgrade via the store to 8.1.
Remember you don't have to update the Windows versions before upgrading. So unplugg the InternetCable first when you are doing a full reinstallation .

You could also use the 'repair' function that's build into Windows 8.1.

it's possible that if the Malware did damage you may have to reinstall IE8, or reimage your system, depends on how bad the damage is, if it did that much damage.

Try these things first....

Delete all Browsing History, check all boxes except for Preserve Favorites Website Data

Check your Security Settings in IE, make sure there is nothing strange in Trusted sites
and click on Reset all zones to default level

Then Reset Internet Explorer Settings in IE, it will be on the Advanced tab
Check the box, Delete Personal Settings

Get Malwarebytes and run it also...

Try that first..

But unfortunately, depending on the damage done, it is not always possible to fully recover without doing what is referred to a nuke and reload
Back up all data, format drive and start over.

Background information
Win8Pro upgraded to Win8.1Preview with a 'keep nothing' installation... Accidentally clicked yes to use SkyDrive for automatic file syncing/backup during Windows setup. Hated how SkyDrive for Desktop appeared at the top of the of the File Explorer window navigation pane. Reinstalled Win8.1Preview and chose not to use SkyDrive this time. However....

- SkyDrive Metro doesn't give the option to uninstall itself upon right click. Nor does it appear in the ap sizes list to be uninstalled. Am I stuck with it?

- SkyDrive for Desktop still shows at the top of the navigation panel. I cannot reinstall the desktop version so that I can change the location of it. I also have no notification tray skydrive icon where I can access the settings and try to change things in there. Finally it isn't properly syned-up - attempting to open a file makes me download it first, and then it opens. Very frustrating as SkyDrive for Desktop installed normally would show me a tray notification that it was syncing, and once synced would allow me to just doubleclick a file to open it. It appears to be broken?

- Additionally, despite my having not clicked to show libraries, they now reside towards the bottom of my file explorer navigation pane and I am unable to get them to go away.

I did not have a problem with Libraries (they appeared/disapeared as they were supposed to), nor SkyDrive (although admittedly I didn't make the initial mistake) when I upgraded my Win8 Enterprise N lap... Read more

Ok, so my AMD Phenom II X2 idles around 40 - 45 C, which I don't like. I'm currently using a heatsink from a 2003, Socket 768 era computer. The heatsink actually fits my AM3 socket. The fan I'm using is from another heatsink which shipped with my CPU, it was a generic made-in-china heatsink and fan, and said heatsink was very flimsy and didn't cool very well.

I'm looking for a fan that is not only a lot quieter, but has more airflow. If I have to get a new heatsink, then so be it, but I just need to get this thing cooled down.

1. What is "quiet" in decibels?
2. Which is better, thermal pads or paste/compound?
3. What is a generally good CPU temp?

A:Some fan questions

According to another discussion we had on here, 40-45 C isn't that bad. I will provide a link to the discussion at the bottom of this post (read pages 1 and 2). Fans are going to make noise. Usually, quieter fans have a lower rpm, which means they won't cool as well. If you still want a new fan, here is one I found on newegg. The reviews all say it is fairly quiet, and one guy said his overclocked phenom II x2 went from being 65 C to 45 C. Seems like it will do what you need it to.

Okay, first off, I was under the impression that DX 10.1 was going to be a part of SP1, but now i'm seeing that i'm still running 10.0. I saw another thread on this topic but nobody ever really answered the guys question, so now i'm asking again

I have an 8800gtx....yeah it's a DX10 card but does it even support DX 10.1 and what exactly is the main change from .0 to .1? Even though it's a necessary update regardless if your card supports it or not, but if your card DOES support it....are there any extra graphical benefits?

I just installed SP1 last night and so far it just seems to be causing even more problems for games....which is bad...starting to wonder if microsoft can do anything right..

My vertical sync doesn't appear to be working anymore since the SP1 install. It's turned on either in the options for said game or in the nvidia control panel.....yet I have horizontal tearing in every game now and it's a tad bit annoying.

A:A few questions about SP1

Hi anarchy101 -

Welcome to TSF.

If you installed SP1 yourself and did not allow Windows Updates to do, please see the following Microsoft Bulletin KB948343 found HERE. After reviewing, I suggest that you check the Device Manager to see if your system is using any of the drivers mentioned therein.

One of my systems had trouble after I installed SP1 because of two drivers that Microsoft now admits are not compatible with Vista SP1.

Good Luck to you.

Hello all,
Just installed my first SSD a Crucial Real SSD 64 gb Sata III. I have a couple of basic questions for those whom have installed OS and most of their software to a SSD with all the data backing up to a HHD.

1) How do you pin icons to the SSD start menu and or open programs not residing on the SSD. As well is there a strategy to any new data saved/backed up to the data source HHD and not the SSD ?

I currently have 4 drives:
SSD 64 gb with Win. 7 Ult 64 OS bit and most software
HHD 1 TB with Win. 7 Ult 64 bit OS and all 64 bit software and data
HHD 1 TB with Win. XP Pro 32 bit OS and all 32 bit software and data
HHD 1 TB with all lossless Flac & WAV file audio

2) When booting I have 4 choices:
Earlier Windows versions (XP Pro 32 bit and installed 64 bit but removed)
Windows 7 (top is SSD)
Windows 7 (center is HHD)
Windows 7 (dead/wont boot or point to a drive)

Question: Can I remove the last dead Windows 7 choice and possible in Earlier Windows versions the XP Pro 64 bit which is also dead/removed ?

I hope I've made the two questions clear enough, if not please ask for clarification.
Cheers and thanks in advance !

A:New SSD questions

Im unsure I understand what you mean about pinning the shortcuts.

It really is no different than if the OS drive was a Spinning disk.
If you install a game or program to a spinning disk, the shortcuts will still be installed to your, All Programs lista, as well as destop shortcuts if you want them.

You can then just browse to the item in the start menu and choose Pin to Start menu or taskbar as you normally would.

I would suggest installing all of your application and software on the SSD.
Then Move all your DATA folders (Music, Videos,Pictures, maybe even Documents) to a spinning drive.
As well as most Games. I would however, if installing games to a spinning disk, format a partition for them at the very front of that disk for best performance.

Im assuming you done a clean, fresh instal of Windows to the SSD?

You should be able to go to your Disk management and delete the OLD Windows 7 partitoon, and the 100MB partition, then recreate/format a new one for additional DATA Storage partition.

Im not very familiar with multiple boot systems however, so hopefully someone that is will be along soon to better answer the the start up option question..

From what little I know about how SSD's work, its best to limit them to read-only operations. Thus, I propose to only install the OS (Windows X64 Ultimate) to this drive (C, and all other programs (MSOffice, MBAM, NIS2011 Steam etc. etc.) to my existing WD 10EARS 1TB SATA drive (let's call this D.

I've searched within the forums (albeit only briefly, and had a look at a few tutorials (also briefly), and can't quite find the answers to a few questions I have.

So, here goes:

1. Once the OS is installed to C: (the SSD), how do I go about "informing" the OS that the C:\Temp and/or any other Windows temporary files/folders should now reference D:, and not C:?

2. When I install my other programs, do I create a D:\Program_Files into which all my other software is installed? Does this conflict with the default C:\Program Files that the OS creates during installation? How does the OS installed on the C: (the SSD) "interact" or "link" with the software installed on D: (the SATA drive)?

3. During anti-virus and anti-malware scans, will there be some temporary files that are written to C: (the SSD) that will be outside my control?

In essence, if I have understood correctly, my new setup should look like this:
On C: (the SSD) ONLY the OS is installed
On D: (the SATA) ALL other software is installed

My questions, I suppose, are really what is the interaction between C: and D: in ... Read more

A:Going to SSD......a few questions

You manually set the temp location.

The best way I have done with my computer is here: How-To: Optimize Your Windows Profile and Media Storage with a SSD | Maximum PC

For installing (large) programs (games mostly), I have mounted a partition in an empty folder inside of C:\Program Files (x86). To the OS, the folder looks like it is part of Program Files, but in actuality, it is on another drive.

You can install some to C: and some to D: or all to D:

For antivirus/antimalware scans, everything is scanned--C: and your temp files in D:

If you use one don't you need to buy a product key to use it ?

I always bought upgrades like the 8 Pro Pack WMC.{$40}
Then upgraded to 8.1 Pro from the Store.{free}

Everything installed nicely.
No problems.

I had no use for an iso.

Why people need iso's confuses me.

Pardon my appalling ignorance.

A:Questions about iso's

David in my case I used an ISO with generic key to install 8.1.1 I also used an $40 8 pro upgrade to Activate.
To avoid upgrading from Win 7 to 8 pro then to 8.1 Por and then update 1
I have a nice clean install of 8.1.1 and then reinstall only the currently used software. lots of crap gone in one fell swoop that had accumulated over the years from Win 7 I actual skipped Win 8 altogether.

I do suppose that the ISO was not really legal however I think the results are legal! And a lot cleaner system that had I gone the legal route and completed all of those upgrade/updates.

I want to set up a VPN between my desktop, my wireless laptop, and another wireless laptop in another state. All of the machines are running XP. Do I have to purchase any software, or does XP have everything. I have gotten conflicting information on this and figured I would ask somebody that knows.

I have a local network set up that allows my laptop to print to the printer hooked to my desktop. Also, I will need to be able to use my laptop to control the laptop in another state, so that I can print to the desktop's printer. Will a remote desktop connection over the VPN allow this?

I'm looking to update my 4 yr old computer with a SSD. It's a Dell Dimmension E520, Intel Core2 6300 1.86GHz, 4GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate x64. Dell's website, via service tag, indicates that I can't add SSD... I am skeptical. I'm def a novice when it comes to my hardware. Hoping someone can help me with some info...

-Can I run a SSD?

-What specs do I need to know in order to buy the correct SSD?

-How large a SSD do i need to run Win7/IE on it, while leaving my media files on old HD? 60,80,100GB?

Thank you..

A:SSD Questions

You can run just OS and programs easily on an 80GB. Just install the os and the programs used frequently on the SSD. Other programs that are not used very often on the spinner. I have both an 80GB Intel and a 90GB Vertex2. I have no space isues with either.

I would find out from Dell why you can't run an SSD. Dell has some Motherboards that will not give you the fastest speed. I know because I have one. It is in the Dell chipset, mine is an H57 chipset which is probably different than yours. However, even though the best speed will not be there, my Dell will run on the SSD. Try to get them to tell you why you can't run an SSD.

Does the AMD CCC that is installed depend on the graphics chipset (i.e. different interface for different chipsets)?

When I install an AMD graphics card, the display always appears underscanned by about 10%.
On my main desktop, I can open CCC and adjust the overscan and underscan.I've been trying an old HDD in another box.
I'm using the onboard graphics chip set (using the HDMI output).
The display appears to be underscanned by ~10%.

The CCC on this machine looks completely different and it has no adjustments for overscan and underscan.
Everything is presets, so nothing can be adjusted (apart from 3D settings). The irony is that despite all of the complaints about drivers in Linux Distros, Linux Mint 16 "just worked" (i.e. proper resolution and scan width).

Does anyone know how I can fix the underscan issue?
Can I just download a different version of CCC and install it?

Hi everyone. I'm back with more questions but this time it's about motherboards & monitors.

Now that B3 versions of Gigabyte MBs are appearing @ Newegg & TigerDirect I've been trying to balance what my needs are & what's available. I'm basically doing a PC re-fresh. I do video editing & other graphic work that is has become more of a hobby nowadays. But, I do like a good running PC & Win 7 looks like it's worth an upgrade.

I've narrowed it down to 2 motherboards: Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 & GA-P67A-UD3-B3. The best I can figure, the basic difference is "H" versions have built-in graphics & "P" versions accept a wider variety of RAM, namely faster - up to DDR3-2133 (Max RAM for the GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 is DDR3-1333). I have read this artical, http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2011/01/11/the-best-memory-for-sandy-bridge/1. I'm not a gamer but AVCHD video rendering could use the added speed. The overall number of ports (USB) & types are different, too. As I recently purchased a new ATI 5570 graphic card (Odd monitor behavior since Windows 7 64-bit install.when I 1st upgraded to Win 7, I think the "P" model would be OK. But, maybe there's more to it than that.

Also, I'm looking @ 2 HP monitors; HP 2310e 23" Diagonal Ultra-Thin WLED Monitor & HP 2311x 23" LED Monitor. I've read that the 2310e has the glossy type screen (I know some hate glossy type but I do like it) & the 2311 is a non-glare scr... Read more

A:More new PC questions.

The H67 chipset apparently only supports RAM frequencies up to 1333MHz, as you say.

It also doesn't support overclocking for the CPUs with unlocked multipliers (I5-2500k and I7-2600k). A mild overclock (to, say. 4.2GHz) may have more effect on video editing than the memory clocks. As I haven't done any video editing, I can't speak from personal experience.

I don't know whether you'll be happy with a TN monitor. I have a Samsung 245BW (24" TN, 1920X1200). I've mostly gotten used to its limitations. It does make color banding in some video, but I believe that it's a 6 bit display. (That's 6 bits per RGB color, 18 bits overall.)

Hi all,

I have a box running Server 2k3 Standard and two XP Pro SP 2 boxes. What I'm trying to do is set up a FTP site, and access the internet through the server. I would rather keep all the files on the XP boxes and just set up a Virtual Directory with IIS to get them on the net.

I'm wondering about the Physical topography for this. I have a LinkSys RTP 300 router behind my modem, the three boxes and a simple 4 port workgroup Hub.
1.) Do I need to run DNS on the server?

2.) Is NAT required since I'm already behind a router? And if so...

3.) Would I set the TCP/IP settings for the clients to static IP's in the 192.168.*.* range and point them to the server for DNS?

4.) There will be two NIC's in the server box, correct?
Thanks in advance. Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

A:VPN/NAT questions

First, to clear up a little misconception. You said:

What I'm trying to do is set up a FTP site, and access the internet through the server.Click to expand...

You don't need to access the internet through the server. You will be accessing the internet through the router. The server is just another client behind the router.

Also, I'm not clear on what you mean here:

I would rather keep all the files on the XP boxes and just set up a Virtual Directory with IIS to get them on the net.Click to expand...

Do you mean you want to keep the files that the FTP server will be server on the WinXP boxes? I guess I would have to know your specific needs to know if that makes any sense...
Now your other questions.

1.) Do I need to run DNS on the server?

You don't need to, no. You should be able to configure your router to act as a DNS server, or at least to give out your ISP's DNS server addresses to your clients via DHCP.
2.) Is NAT required since I'm already behind a router? And if so...

No. The router should be doing the NATing.
3.) Would I set the TCP/IP settings for the clients to static IP's in the 192.168.*.* range and point them to the server for DNS?

Ideally you should configure DHCP on your router and have it pass out addresses. Again, DNS settings can be efficiently pushed to the clients this way. However, your server should have a static IP address if you are going to route FTP traffic to it.
4.) There will be two NIC'... Read more

A:SSD Questions

I've never owned or used an SSD. I just bought a two-terabyte drive for $80. When SSDs are down to about twice that, I will probably get one, myself.

SSDs are ve-e-ery expensive for their size compared to magnetic disks; but, they do offer advantages in speed, especially for gamers. Boot times are also noticeably shorter.

If it were me, I would save my SSD money for a later time unless I needed the extra speed for something like gaming or if I worked in a situation where a laptop might be getting knocked around a bit. For normal office and business applications, the time savings is just too small to matter.

Early adopters of new technology pay a high monetary price and are the guinea pigs for the industry. I'll let someone else pay those prices while I wait on the technology to fully mature and for manufacturers to recover their R&D from others beside myself.

But, that is just one person's opinion, my own.

I'm a bit late but I finally got around to trying windows 8. After the initial shock was over I've managed to accept most of the changes.

I would like to ask if there is any way to fix a few problems I have with the new OS:

1. I can't find and way to make the metro menu start on a different screen to my main display. I run 3x 1920x1080 in 5760x1080 with the centre screen as the main display and it's extremely annoying that the metro menu is on my main screen whenever I start the computer.

2. I can't find any way to have the taskbar clock on all 3 taskbars. This seems like such a simple feature and since I run all my fullscreen programs on my main display it seems necessary especially with the next problem.

3. I nearly always run fullscreen programs on my main display which means the clock is hidden. Because of my monitor setup I run everything in windowed fullscreen when I can. In windows 7 I can just click on another screen and the taskbar would appear over the windowed fullscreen program on my main display. This doesn't happen anymore. It's extremely annoying as it's how I tell what is the active window especially since the IE10 colours are less contrasting between active and non-active in windows 8.

Any help with these issues would be appreciated.

I think overall windows 8 has a lot of good ideas but has alienated "enthusiast" users with a lack of customisation and too much focus on the metro interface which is fairly useless for everyone except the most ba... Read more

Yesterday I was busy updating from my ancient ZoneAlarm to the new version and also uninstallng Inoculate to switch to AVG. The latter took 7 minutes to scan for viruses.

I'm surprised that today AVG didn't perform a quick-auto-scan upon my booting up, the way Inoculate did. Does the scan need to be done manually, and take 7 minutes each time?

Also, while online, the AVG scanner suddenly popped up as soon as I opened one of my online email accounts. At least it gave me the option of cancelling the scan, but why it did so at all, beats me. This never happened with Inoculate.

I also wonder if Z.A. & AVG are sufficient, or must I also download spyware, trojanware, scanner & who knows what else...

I have a few questions regarding some functionality that I seemed to have lost from upgrading from Win 7.

On "My Pictures" I no longer have the option to rename, cut, copy or any option I previously had. This is frustrating and I'm not sure what I may have set wrong that I can no longer do that. If that's just how it is I don't see how this an upgrade so I'm looking for some guidance regarding that. All right clicking does is select the image, but I cannot find any of the previous options for the life of me and I would love to organize my photos as I want. Also, on videos there is no longer a pause feature etc, it just plays. Is that right?

Second, I understand we are supposed to have the ability to move the tiles as we want, but is there an option to make it a non-rubrics cube? To be able to move one thing without it jacking with another? I've spent a lot of time on Google, but no dice.

Third, if I don't take to Win 8, since I upgraded via download is there a safe way to revert back to 7 or do I have to backup all my personal stuff, photos etc and since I don't seem to have that option to transfer, burn to a disc that will be a chore or is there an option that I can simply access that will restore my OS to Win 7?

Thanks in Advance

What do you mean by "my pictures"? Do you mean the picture library? Library>Pictures ? If that's what you mean, all the functions are there, you aren't probably doing things the right way.

Hello,

I am trying to figure out what kind of UPS options I have to keep the following hardware running for 8, 12 or 24 hour intervals and I am wondering if anyone can possibly make some hardware reccommendations to steer me in the right direction.

Here is a list of all the hardware I have running that I need to keep powered up and online. We had a power outage a few years ago that lasted for days so I am trying to figure out my options to keep it all online for 8, 12 and 24 hour intervals.

I assumed that the servers will be running half to full CPU load (we do keep them quite busy) so I approximated that the wattage consumption would be ~just over half of the peak power supply ratings for all the hardware in the list. (if someone thinks this is way off please let me know).

Here is a chart of my power requirements.

Can someone please reccommend a RACK MOUNTED UPS that could sustain 8, 12 or 24 hour periods.

Or if someone could please explain how I can properly work out this problem myself that would be greatly appreciated. I tried a few online calculators, but my results are "out of range" when I try to get a result from the online calculators inputting my values as 3000w at 20amps.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Hi all

I have two questions in this forum to ask:

1) Whenever I intend to install any softwares, some give two executable files, one for Windows 32bit and the other for windows 64 bit. What are these? I am using the Windows XP Home edition [1GB RAM and 120GB HDD] and how should I know which one to install ?

2) I have a broadband internet connection with a bandwidth of 2Mbps. I understand that when connected to internet, my IP address is my identity in the WWW. But recently I came to know that IP can easily misused by some websites and hackers. Therefore it is essential to protect our IP address while surfing from intruders. I also don't wish to mask(proxy)/hide my IP as it is not legal (?). Therefore, my question is, "Are there some open source softwares to protect our IP or is there some technique in windows to play around?"

I am really curious to know about these, please share your knowledge.

Thank you for your replies,
