I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. Looking to get a new SSD but in NVMe configuration. a. Does my L450 support NVMe boot up? What type of NVMe does my Thinkpad support?  I thinking of getting the Samsung 860 Evo.b. Is connecting the new NVMe and running transfer SSD software the Windows 10 will recognize the drives and do the transfer?    Serial NumberF0ATPKGPart Number: 20D5503800 Thanks for any help you can give in this matter!

Hi,

I'm thinking about building my own PC, but I don't quite understand what anti-static precautions should be taken. Obviously, nothing will be plugged in, but is there anything I'm missing or not understanding?
Also, are anti-static wrist bands essential? Also, would carpet work as a good working area?

Thanks

I have a
HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
64bit with Windows Vista Home premium
Recently I had a friend take it and wipe it to start fresh.
when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

PATH
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

PATHEXT
.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH;.MSC

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Hello,

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,
Bob

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

modules in one bank work with 60ns modules in another ... Read more

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

A:32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

I had to reformat my HD and decided to try creating two partitions on the C drive: one for the OS (Win XP Home SP2) and one for programs.

So far so good.

1. Everytime I install a progarm components are installed on the C drive anyway. Mainly stuff that is pinned to the start menu. Does this have to be this way? Can I change it so that the Start menu reads from the same drive I install my programs into?

2. If not, can I repartition the drive to enlarge the partition that the OS is on without causing any problems? When I created the partitions I guess I made the OS partition too small. If I use Partition Magic can I resize the two partitions and not cause any complications?

3. Are there settings that can be changes to change where files are automatically saved? For example the favorites folder. Do they have to save on the C drive? Is it bad to change the dirve if it is possible?

I know, many questions. Just trying to learn. I appreciate any help and input. Thank you ahead of time.

Answer to first question is what OS are you running, and what do u have loaded on ur computer...run HJT and post it in here and let us see what runs and then we can tell u or not what processes can and cannot be terminated.

To your 2nd question....could be the song itself, or maybe something else is playing with sound, don't know unless u can tell us what u are doing at the time...well to me that is, there is a number of things.

I have got some questions, mostly minor, but questions nonetheless that have been stacking up over time. There aren't more than a few right now, but I'm sure some more will surface in the future.

I am having consistency problems with every time I restart my computer. I have a toolbar on my Taskbar that lets me access my desktop, but every time I restart my computer, it doesn't stay there, and I have to enable it. The same goes for having the Autohide feature enabled for the Taskbar.

This question is similar to the above, but it's slightly different, as I will explain. I use the Windows TweakUI for a few things, and one of them is to automatically log into my Windows account since it's the only one. And when I turn that on, then restart, it works. When I restart again, it no longer works, and asks for my login stuff. Annoying!
-------
The icon for .zip files on my computer are no longer there... I tried using the "rebuild icons" thing in TweakUI and it does not seem to work.
-------
I have two hard drives installed on my computer. The secondary one, which I never use other than storage, is not always detected by my computer on start up. I have to restart a few times to get it to show up. I'm sort of worried that it's failing or something. I checked the connections inside and it all seems to be fine.

I want to play some games that require a lot of stuff on the screen (Rome Total War if you know what that is) and I have heard more RAM would allow me to do this. Would it? Or would a faster processor be the right thing for me?

Whats the difference between RAM and a processor?
How much would 1 gig of RAM cost?
What would a better video card do?

Thanks for answering these few questions.

A:few questions about RAM

RAM is random access memory; where the machine stores files it is currently working on. The more ram, the more the machine can store, the faster it will (theoretically) run. If you are looking for a good gaming machine, too much RAM is generally not a problem.

The processor is the engine; your's right now at 1.8 is slow, but not mind-numbingly so. Also, it depends on your motherboard as to how much ram you can put in. I've got a gig in mine, can play doom3d as if it were a movie, so I'm pretty happy.

Price depends on the ram. Hit newegg.com and shop around. I got a gig of pc3200 for about $125/stick, but that was a while ago, and I'm pretty sure the price has dropped.

If you only have the video card that the system came with, chances are you will need to upgrade to something 'decent'. Onboard cards get the job done, but newer games require more from them, so that is usually where the mfg of the pc skimps. There and ram. When I got doom3d, I finally had to updgrade, and I got a pretty decent v.c. for about a hundred bucks.

If the system says there is a hard disk error, it is probably best to replace the hard drive. With hard drives as cheap as they are, are you willing to take a chance on a flaky hard drive with your data on it?

As far as I know, there is no way to create an XP installation CD from a working XP installation on another computer.

Hello

For the past few weeks, Limewire randomly starts up on my computer. It can be running fine and suddenly it'l start opening up. I've checked my settings for it and I dont see anything that would cause it to start like this. Any ideas?

Even more mystifying is that over the last 2 weeks or so, if my computer is inactive for a fairly short period of time, I think 10 mins or maybe even less, it'll go back to the XP login screen. Thankfully from that screen it doesnt take that long to get back in, but the 30 secs or whatever it does take, all told, is quite annoying. I hate watching a movie and suddenly seeing it quit to that and having to just wait there all this time.

Any advice?

Thanks

Hey all, I just have a few questions with my current Windows XP System.

Everytime I restart the computer, it makes me switch between 2 of the same OS's. There's a list that says:

- Windows XP SP2
- Windows XP SP2 (boot screen)

It makes me select one and gives me a 30 second time limit. This is a little annoying, so does anyone know if there's a way to remove this and auto-choose one of the two instead of asking me?

Also, after windows loads, it brings me up to the User Sign-In screen. Thing is, I'm the only user that uses this computer and pressing my icon to load windows is a little time consuming.

Lastly, everytime I load up windows, a "You still have files waiting to be written on your CD Drive" pops up. Whenever I click it, there are no files on there waiting to be written and it's been fairly annoying.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I was told that I need these service packs to get the USB 2.0
I was trying to get info on this USB 2.0( didnt even know it excisred till I plugged in my external Sony DRX-710UL into my USB port & it said I my computer didnt support HIGH SPEED. I could still use the product, but it would be at slower speed.
Anyway, I though I understood it to be that I also needed a new HIGH SPEED PCI card and the USB 2.0 that microsoft had only supported the USB port if the updated hardware was installed.
I dont know if I said that right.
I guess, the bottom line is, do I need to install those service packs to get the USB 2.0 support to use my dvd writer?

This isn't really a problem, just some annoyances and a bit of curiosity. I have win xp and i have sympatico HSE, is there anyway to make it automatically signin when i do??? Right now i have to click connect. Also, when u sign off it asks u whether u wanna close ur internet connection, which i never want to. Anyway to stop that?
My last question is is there a way to make a different sound play when signing into windows that would just affect my account???
Thanks

Howdy all...

I'm curious as to some problems that I've started having.
My DVD and my CDRW fail to autostart. I noticed this when I went to install something....so upon further checking I've found that they won't refresh either when I change CD's. Now my A Drive is not working.
When I insert a floppy, i just get the and try to access the drive i get the message to insert a disk.

I've installed Perfect Disk to defrag my drives (I love Diskkeeper, but it's screwed me up so much).
When ever i reboot, I get the message that Perfectdisk cant access my drives, although I can access them normally, transfering file etc.
If I reinstall PerfectDisk I'm fine till i reboot.

One time I could not get to my disks at all...(Delayed Write error)

Both HD's are new and I don't suspect the problem is with them

This started after I applied SP1. Because I like a certain visual style I'm using a modified xptheme.dll. to be able to use it.
I've also changed the System Drive Icon's using Iconphile

When I boot...sometimes I get the message about system files being altered...please insert SP1 CD (Didn't know there was a SP1 CD)
I hit cancel and then cancel again to confirm I want to continue

What would be causing the DVD, CDRW and floppy to be acting like that.

I can't uninstall SP1, as I did a clean install of XP Pro and applied SP1 (without saving the files) before anything else

I'm wondering if I should reinstal... Read more

Hi I have a question, besides it being illegal what are the disadvantages of downloading a pirated copy of Windows XP Pro?

A:XP Questions

Hmm, I guess there wouldn't be any disadvantages besides being illegal and it might not work. I don't know for certain, but XP (home & pro) requires you to register the product online, which makes it difficult for piracy.

Just curious about this, in windows 98 with outlook express 6, when I'd send a link by clicking "mail, send a link" it would put the link in the email, but now that I'm using XP with OE6, I've noticed it sends the link as an attachment and right in my email it has a message that the link is attached. I really don't care for this at all is there anyway to change it back and get that message to stop appearing in my emails? Also in 98 when I'd open multiple windows, my toolbar at the bottom of the screen would just have them all going across so I could just click the box to switch to whichever window I needed to, but on XP after I get 6 windows open, they all go into one box on the toolbar and I have to click that box and pick one out of the list. I always have at least 7 windows open when I'm working, it can't be helped, but not being able to just see them all and click the one I need adds extra steps that I really don't need. Is there someplace to set that? All I'm seeing is settings to cascade or tile the actual windows, not in the toolbar. Thanks.

A:Few more questions

Grannysue You can tweak your taskbar, toolbar and keep more single windows open. I have had ten open at a time .Unlock the taskbar if locked then run your cursor down along top edge of taskbar near your clock and your resize arrow appears just resize up you will now see the time ,day, and date displayed and your taskbar will now be able to handle more open windows. The taskbar looks much different enlarged but this tweak works for people who like to work with more single windows open. Oh Yes remember to right click and check lock taskbar if you want it to stay this way . If not just expand it when your working , but to do this you must unlock the taskbar .first.

1/ my computer has 2 HD (40 gig and 160 gig) (the first one split into C and D; the second is by itself); I use them all pretty frequently ; my question is should I create another partition on the second HD just for the pagefile.sys for optimum performance or itís not that much of an improvement? Also, the cluster sizes are different C is 4 kb, D is 8 kb (both on FAT32 and came like that when I bought the computer); the 160 gig HD is NTFS and has only 1 kb; I wonder what the optimum cluster size should be or should I just leave it alone? I have partition magic 8 but I donít really know it that well.
2/ on another computer, I also have 2 HD, the OS (2000) is on the second HD; I m trying to reinstall windows 2000 on the C drive and subsequently remove the win2k on the second HD and make it house only data; whatís the best way to do that?
3/ whatís the best way to remove win98 and install 2000?

I have done some readings on the uninstallation of windows, but since I have never had formal training and itís kind of a big deal, so Iíd like to be extra sure that I wont mess things up; thanksa lot for your input.

A:more various questions

1. put your pagefiles directory on your drive that doesn't have your os. It very important to defrag that drive first.

2. the best way to install win 2k from on your primary drive when you have a secondary drive depends on your knowledge. Assuming you know minimum and don't care to back anything up, then the easiest way is to format both drives and do a clean install.

This is a problem I got into a few months ago-I gave up. Here it goes again!
My computer is running XP home edition, plenty of memory, etc. I had some problems with the pre-installed Roxio cd writting software. After some research, I bought a product called ClickN' Burn--it generally works great. Part of the software package is a program from Veritas for DLA, or Drive Letter Access, I think. It is one of those programs that allows you to drag and drop to a re-writtable cd. I can't get it to work. I can't find any software updates anywhere. I get a general error message when I try to format a cd-rw and then when I turn off the computer, some program associated with Veritas hangs. The DLA program has been uninstalled for several months now, and the computer is generally working fine (except for some weird driver problem that crops up off and on).
Has anyone had any experience with Veritas or Clickn' burn under XP? Sometimes I think I should just uninstall the whole thing, bite the bullet and get Roxio CD Creator Platinum for about $100, but I am stubborn. Suggestions?

have you tried formatting the cd rw witch easy cd creator first? Does that give you any problems? Try downloading nero and formating the cd rw like that, and then formatting with the packet incremental writing system.

I have Win XP and am having a problem with virtual memory, but have 516mb coming this week, so that SHOULD solve that.

While using Word the past few days, I've noticed that right clicking brings up a transparent box, rather than one in which the options are listed (Save..Save As...Exit etc) Even when I go up to FILE..EDIT...VIEW, the boxes are transparent and I have no way to find the option I'm looking for. Do you suppose this is related to the memory thing, or do I have another problem???? How can I get the options to display as they're supposed to?

Second question: I have downloaded several midis and wav files (non-copyrighted!!). I save them in a folder on desktop and can listen to them anytime I want, but despite my best efforts, I CANNOT copy them to a CD so I can preserve them all. I have an IBM NetVista 2292 with IBM RecordNow, which works great for text files. Yet when I put all these midis/wavs in the box to record them, it always says "Can't find files". What am I doing wrong???? How can I get these great sounds recorded?

In advance.......many thanks for any help you can give!!!

Hi, some friends of mine has asked me to do some troubleshooting on their computers. Trouble is, I'm a devout Win 98 believer, and his system is running XP. So far, I HATE XP! I have a few general (and probably stupid) questions that might make all this easier, so here goes:
1- WHERE does the system tell me how much RAM the computer has? In Win 98 I just right click on MyComputer, and Properties tells me how much there is, and what percentege of the system resources are free. I did right click on the task bar and got a bunch of info that I can't decipher. Moving graphs and stuff.. AGGG! WHY did they do this to Windows?
2 - How do I eliminate the need for a password on a laptop running XP Professional?
3 - If a system is set up with an administrator, and some other accounts, is there a way of preventing the administrator from invading another account and reading info? Does changing the logon password provide any protection from a snooping administrator?
4 - Can a laptop designed for WinME run XP efficiently? (14gb hard drive)
5 - Is fdisking a laptop essentialy the same as fdisking a desktop? I want to remove XP from a laptop and install 98.
Thanks,
TennisWitch

I am firstly interested in knowing if it is possible to go back to SP1 of SP2 has already been downloaded? I am using a music software that reports an insurmountable number of errors and other problems with WIndows XP SP2. If this is an option what procedure would I utilize to go back to SP1?
