Muffled Sound and can't hear talking.

Q: Muffled Sound and can't hear talking.

I'm a noob when it comes to the computer world so bear with me. My laptop is about 3 years old and about a year ago, my sound started to get muffled and I couldn't hear voices when I played games. Whenever I move the earphones in the audio jack, I can sometimes pick up the voices, but I have to keep it steady of put a pillow under it to keep it like that. Is it just my computer? Or did something change?

Preferred Solution: Muffled Sound and can't hear talking.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Muffled Sound and can't hear talking.

Either the headphone jack is defective or the headphone plug. To determine which it is, use a different headphone (or the small earphones like are used on MP3 players) and see if that works properly. If it does then the jack in the PC is the problem. Unfortunately either the motherboard or a "daughter board" I/O board will have to be replaced. The jacks are enclosed and not (usually) repairable. The printed circuit boards are multi-layer and unless you have the special tools to work on a multi-layer circuit board you can't fix it yourself by replacing the jack.

One other outside possibility. A few PC's, but not all, have the option to reassign the jacks with a Sound Configuration panel. If yours has this, you MAY be able to make the "Line In" jack a headphone jack.

Whenever I talk through my microphone, even when its not on a voice chat program or something, I can actually hear myself through my speakers - its like the sound coming through my microphone is going directly back into my computer...

Another strange thing, every time I start using my microhphone, or have changed settings in anything, I have to go to the recording control and select "Rear mic"...

Any idea why all this strangeness occurs...? Or how I can fix it?

I'm using onboard sound, intel 965ltck motherboard.

A:Why can I hear myself talking through my microphone?

What you are experiencing could be feedback. Try lowering the volume on your speakers and see if that helps, and if you have a slider in your mixer settings under playback called Mic, turn it off (not the one under recording).

This all started when I decided to get a webcam. Then I needed a mic. Well, I have finally figured out to record and playback using the sound recorder. However, we I just talk into the microphone I hear nothing from my speakers. Can't figure it out. I can hear myself on playback on the sounder recorder in all programs but I can't hear myself when I just speak into the microphone. Can anyone help with this one. I'm baffled.

This issue has been happening for some months now, though it dissapeared for about a week before randomly coming back.
Whenever my friends on teamspeak speak at all, they can hear themselves through my outbound, like an echo. This issue also occurs on other programs, like ventrilo or Skype. I've tried using different headsets, plugging the audio and mic into different jacks, and fiddling with their settings, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas about a solution?

Edit: I am using windows 7 64bit.
My DxDiag: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZJO4PISO

A:Friends hear an echo when talking on teamspeak, I'm using a headset.

I get this problem when I plug in speakers. There can be several reasons:
1) You've a slow internet connection which gives you high latency.
2) You are not using push to talk.
3) You plugged in speakers (which you haven't)

So I would recommend you use push-to-talk feature in teamspeak. Go to options>capture and set a push-to-talk key.

Hope this solves the problem

The reformat solved my cpu problem but now the sound is all messed up, it works but its so sharp and muffled and echoing kind of, and when I play cs 1.6 the guns sound so dense and muffled. I've tried everything from checking all the settings, making sure nothing is muted and making sure all the confirgurations are correct. I've installed driver after driver after driver but doesn't help. I've searched everywhere on the net but couldn't find a solution, I have broken my Icemat headphones over this becuase I got so mad that my sound don't work right and I can't seem to fix it. I've noticed that the sound on my HP dv7 laptop seems more muffled that it used to. I was trying to watch a video with the volume on low last night and I couldn't really make out what was being said. Usually this is fine.

Any ideas? - I checked the speaker drivers in control panel and apparently they are up to date and working okay.

I'm running win 7 RC by the way. Before that it was vista.

A:Sound Muffled

did this whappened when you started using W7? Drivers for audio on laptops almost always contain software that will enhance the quality of the sound produced by the speaker(s), a thing that can't be done with generic drivers.

Some days ago I started noticing that the sound coming from my PC suffered from some kind of muffled distortion. I use earphones and theyre perfectly fine, since they work properly with any other device.

Windows 7 x64 (Completely updated according to automatic updates)
Realtek High Definition Audio

This kind of muffled sound occurs at random times in a video, song, etc, I honestly cant specify when does the distortion occur, its mainly a few times at random.

I connect my earphones to an audio entry in the volume and bass control wheel of my speakers and sub woofer.

What have I done recently that could have affected the sound?

-As I had said before, the earphones work perfectly fine, but the sound distortion occurs with all the earphones I have tried. So discard this.

-Recently I removed my speakers' cables which are connected to the sub-woofer, and the sound problem has started occuring closely to when I plugged them back again. This made me think that I messed up with the cables connected to my sound system, but unfortunately this isnt the problem, since when I connect my earphones to the PC tower audio entry, the muffled distortion occurs aswell.

Basically I must discard the effectof any peripherals and therefore believe that the problem revolves to the sound card

I would go to Realtex and download the driver from their website. Microsoft's device drivers are generic the ones from the manufactures are better.

Im having with w7 atm when i play music the sound is all muffled and screechy like its being amplified kinda like when you turn the equalizer up full. Ive gone through the sound settings but there arent any that i can see that would be causing the problem. The sound card shows up as Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM) under device manager which is the drivers that installed automatically from windows update.

A:muffled sound

have you looked in control panel for the creative audio software, im not familiar with your sound card but it may have a settings panel in control panel.
,has this recently started happening have you installed any sound software recently and have you had an update that may have affected it?
if its a fairly recent thing then maybe a system restore to the point before it started happening will help.

A:Muffled Sound in PC

Not sure what help this might be, but keep it in mind while you troubleshoot:

If the audio entering an amplifier is too high, it will muffle. FOr ex: your computer sound is turned up, sending high amounts of ausio to powered-external speakers. those speakers will then have bad distortion, mostly at high olume points in the ausio track. (also sometimes at high bass points). try turning your pc volume quite low and see if the problem presents with standard, unamplified headphones directly connected to the pc. If this solves it then it is an amplifying problem almost guranteed.

Hey everyone. I just installed a new sound card (upgrade from O/B sound), when i play music like in Windows Media Player it sounds great. But when i play videos like on You tube its all muffled. What would cause this? Thanks.

A:Muffled Sound

It's probably just from the low bitrate used on online videos. The sound quality of those is bad because of it. If your sound is good with good audio files, then there's nothing wrong with your setup.

I have a Foxconn G31mx motherboard which has built in Realtek audio running Windows 7 32bit. I have downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from both Foxconn and Realtek which has made no difference. I thought it may have somthing to do with a recently installed ATI 4850 gfx card as this has a HDMI port but looking at the installed playback devices all that is available is ''Speakers - Realtek high definition audio device'' which is set as enabled and default and ''Realtek digital output - Realtek high definition audio device'' which is disabled. I have tried every possible combination of enabling and dissabling the various options without success.
Any advice or help would be greatly recieved as my little girl is loosing the will to live not being able to play on Nick Juniour website lol.....
Many thanks in advance.

I am working on my neighbors computer. It's one I gave her, but I am always trying to get the best performance out of this old thing. It's a running a Mitac motherboard from a Compaq computer with a 500MHz processor, 253MB's of RAM, an ATI PCI video card and an AOpen PCI sound card.

I just reformatted and put Windows 2000 on there. It's a bit slow for the system, but W98 is so unstable and I had little success with that.

The installation went fine. I even updated the BIOS. Now it does have onboard audio, but disabled it, in one way or another, in the BIOS (It still shows up in device manager though for some reason, but that's now disabled)

I also ran into putting in possibly a hacked or virus-infected program on it and it, of course, screwed things up. Luckliy I was able to reload everything and get on with the installation of some other programs.

The problem is, that during start-up, the Windows start-up sound is slightly muffled. I tried putting in a different wave start-up, but it did the same thing. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the sound card either, since I tested the wav in "Sounds and Multimedia" in Control Panel. It sounded fine there.

I also messed around with the advanced features in that category and changed things like hardware acceleration and such, but I really don't know what I'm doing there.

So it appears to me that the problem is in the startup boot sequence itself, right? Or what else could i... Read more

Ok this is my first post on any tech help forum so my apologies if i miss out any key information.

Here's the problem, since purchasing my HP Pavillion dv7-1020ea laptop i have had intermittent problems with my speaker sound going muffled, quieter and losing all high tones. This is a continuous problem from the moment the computer starts and doesnt change.

My laptop runs vista 64 with IDT High Definition Audio codec and the drivers are up to date. I have tried enabling and disabling the device, it says it is working fine. Sound from my headphones works fine with none of the muffling. In the IDT control panel, the settings are set correctly, im not attempting to run surround sound or anything.

At first I thought it was a bad connection or something but suddenly the problem disappeared and never happened again for 6 months. But recently I reformatted my PC and as soon as my PC was running again the problem resurfaced. Restarting my PC sometimes fixes it but more often than not it doesn't.

Its very frustrating because I can't pin the source of the problem down. I dont think its a bad connection because it worked fine for 6 months and then when i reformatted it came back. I never experience crackling or jerky sound or short periods of good or bad sound. When i turn my PC on and it wrks, it works fine until my PC is turned off. The problem never just happens as im using my PC, it turns on with the problem, or it turns on without it.

I just got my laptop on Wednesday, (yay,) but when I tried going on Youtube I noticed the sound is very muffled.  I compared it to my old laptop and the sound was much better on the old one.  Heck, the sound on my phone is better.  The same thing happened when I switched to Windows 10 on my old laptop so I went to Microsoft support chat.  They only told me to do the usual stuff I had already found in other searches.  The sound is still muffled and very annoying to listen to because it's like something is covering my speakers.  Can anyone help?

Hello,I have some weird problem with my Lenovo Y50-touchscreen 4K. I have the laptop for about 3 years now, and today, while playing GTA V, when I started a new mission, it started "clicking" in a steady rhythm and the sound, only from the speakers (headphones works fine), has become muffled. I bought this Laptop from the US store (official website) but currently at Israel and they have an awful service (they damaged my last laptop 4 times in 4 different occasions....) so I really hope that it is something I could figure alone. Any ideas? * In any case, My exstended warranty ended about 6 months ago. Thanks.  Details:Lenovo Y-50 Touch Screen - 4K16 RAM500 SSDNVIDIA 860MWindows 10    By the way, I just found this video which show same problem:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7WzjYrInAk

Hi Shay4383,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can first start to run diagnostics to check on the integrity of the internal parts. One in particular is the harddrive so it would be interesting to isolate what is the part that cause the noise.

This has been a problem for me for a few months now, but it's just getting unbearable.
So, here's the situation:Oftentimes, my headphones give out muffled audio. It makes it virtually impossible to make out human speech, and just generally isn't very good. In the past, I could fix this by adjusting the headphone jack somewhat, but over time I've had to do it more violently and I'm concerned at this point that I'll harm the computer if I continue doing it. Now, whenever it happens, I have to wiggle the jack around with a decent amount of force to get it to work properly.
I'm not particularly good with computer hardware, so I'm not entirely sure what the exact issue could be. If you need any more information, just ask. I'd be happy to provide it. Any help is appreciated.

A:Muffled and Whispered sound in Inspiron 3542 from maxxaudio speaker

Rakshit Trivedi i don't know either it is hardware problem or software problem.
Hello. Test by switching to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager2. Expand the Sound, Video & Game Controllers section.3. Right click on the Realtek and select to uninstall.4. Put a check mark in the option to delete the driver software, and then ok.5. Restart the laptop and go back to the Device Manager and check again for a Realtek driver. Keep uninstalling & restarting until Realtek no longer appears under Sound...Controllers and "High Definition Audio Device" appears in its place. "High Definition Audio Device" is the name of the native driver.
[The reason you might have to go through the process more than once is because the driver files for more than one Realtek driver could be on the hard drive. When a Realtek driver is removed, the next one gets installed if Windows can locate the files. Windows installs its generic driver only after all Realtek files have been removed.]
6. At this point, test the audio while the native driver is installed and see if the same problem occurs.
7. When finished testing, download and install a fresh copy of the Realtek driver for your operating system. Get it from your Dell support page. Test the audio again
If the same problem occurs with both the Realtek and the native driver, then probably not a software issue.

Just what the title says. This happened when I was trying to add a sata dvd writer to the pc. Terrible mobo. Asus p5ne. Three sata ports and I get a blue screen if I try to use one with a sata dvd player. I have two hard drives one the old IDE version with the pins, and then another with sata. I can't boot the PC off of the sata cable HD even though that's the one with VISTA ultimate x64

To my problem because days of bull****tin around trying to get the dvd writer to work, I gave up because a $25 writer isn't worth a whole day of messing around.

Anyways, somewhere along the line something went wrong with my audio. I now I only have backround sound with very faint "talking" in things such as movies. MP3's seem to work fine. I had xvid codecs installed. DIVX codecs installed. I didn't uninstall anything. I checked all the sound settings in the control panel and they show the headphone jacks functioning. I installed updated codecs. Still doesn't work. I guess my next guess is to try and reinstall the mobo sound driver again. Although when I go into Devices and try to update it there, it says I have the most updated version.

Anyone else see this problem.

Hi there. There is a weird talking sound that happens every now and then, usually when I watch videos, either online or local mpg files or such. The sound comes from the headphones and its a talking sound that is quite hard to make out, it has a sort of a radio effect or those military phones that is how the voice sounds.
Again it usually happens when there is a video running and happens few times in a row and then you don't hear it.
Now I'm ruining quite a few pirated programs that have used several cracks and tools, though these are usually from somewhat trusted sources, but who knows or it may be some weird program that I forgot about or something.
I'd like to know what this could be, if its trojan or some malware and what are the recommendations here, should I provide logs and stuff?

It comes with a subwoofer that connects (black plug and green plug) to the two audio jacks and you connect two speakers to the subwoofer. When I plugged in the green plug from the subwoofer to the right audio jack, there was a popping sound. I quickly pulled the wire and from there, no audio would play from my laptop's speakers.I can only play sound through headphones, and through the subwoofer to the speakers.I looked at the device manager, checked the "sound, video, and game controls" and it said everything was working properly, updated, and there were no red X's or exlamation points. My laptop speakers can't play system sounds, or any music. When I open the "Volume Control" window, click on advanced, under Tone Controls, there Bass and Treble are greyed out and I cant slide the bar left or right. I used to be able to.Please help. Thanks in advance. I'll try to make some screen shots asap.i made ms paint diagrams and uploaded to imagebeaveri made the above images using ms paint and google images. this is my first time using imagebeaver but hopefully its uploaded correctly.

A:No sound from Laptop speakers, but can hear sound out headphones

The following may work but it applies to Windows Vista (I don't have XP any more), so it may be a little different for yours:

Control Panel > Sound > Speakers > Properties > Advanced > Restore Defaults

It was working and then I hit something in the realtek HD audio manager by accident and it stopped working, I can't figure out how to fix it.

A:Can't hear sound through headphones, but it says sound is playing?

Not knowing what you did, all we can do is guess and try to help you.

Not sure if System Restore (back to an available restore date that is before whatever you did) will help or not, but one option to try.

Uninstalling/reinstalling the RealTek will probably do it. Actually just installing the latest RealTek will first uninstall the existing, have you restart the PC (Important step do not bypass this) and then will do a new install.

Download the latest High Defintion Codec from RealTek. Realtek

Hello. I recently posted in my inablility to hear anything in flash. Well the problem is happening again. I tried reinstalling the drivers and that didnt work. i tryed updating the drivers as well. But when i updated i couldnt hear anything at all. so i kept what i have. The driver i am using is the realtec audio 97 driver and it has to take a moment to sense my speakers. however when i try to have it sense my speakers it gets an error that says CANNOT FIND WAVE CONTROL and then quits. I would really like to get rid of this program because this is the second time it happened. any help would be appriciated. thanks.

EDIT:I can hear sound from VLC media player and QUICKTIME. However flash is a no-go.

After i did a reformat of my computer, i can no longer hear sound or use my mic. I've already done windows update, and got all of my devices working except the speakers and mic.

I have an emachines 512mb ram, win xp, amd 3200 cpu.

Could you please look on the front of your computer and look for the model number of your emachine. It should look something like T2875. Also please check the device manager, you can do this by right clicking on the My Computer icon and go to properties. Next go to the hardware tab, and click the option labeled device manager. Verify that there is nothing that is standing out with an exclimation point or red showing conflict or unknown devices.

I can't get any audio sound for music or videos (or even "sounds"). However, in my music creation software (Finale, Band in a box) it works perfectly. so there's nothing wrong with the speakers or sound card, etc.

is there a setting somewhere that I have somehow violatedt? Help!

A:can't hear any sound...

I did a system restore and it restored my sound. However, I had subsequently installed and done a bunch of tortuous, special setup with Dreamweaver, and I cannot restore the machine to a time when I had both the sound and also Dreamweaver. so I'm stuck...

I notice that on Wed. of last week, it indicates that a "Software distribution service 2.0" did something at 11;34 p.m. Anyone know what that means? Because, I can restore back to Tuesday and have the sound, but after that "Software districution service 2.0," the sound is gone. something messed with the setting or whatever.

to reiterate: I get sound jsut fine with my music audio programs, but not in anything else...Please, any ideas?

Recently, I have encountered this problem with my computer. It isn't playing any sounds. At first, I thought it may be the speakers. So i checked them, and they are good. So I reinstalled the sound card, but it seemed like it didn't wanna take. (It didn't take.)

Hi I have the same problem. I find that I cannot hear sound in YouTube, Bebo(like MySpace) & generally other internet sites. I also have no default sound when my computer starts up & closes. When I play mp3s through MediaPlayer, I have perfect sound. I tried to do the codec thing, but when I get to 'Registry Fix non working system sound', it is not shown. If I click on Fixes it is still grayed out & I have tried clicking on it regardless but it does not do anything.

I had a microsoft technician that tried to help me. He mentioned that but I am not sure if it was the full version or not. As of yet he still cant figure out why I have no sound. He has told me to reinstall my Flashplayer, but I still cant get sound. I havent done the speaker thing as my comp is connected to my stereo & it plays music in mediaplayer so I am pretty confident it isnt that. I have tried to restore to an earlier time but no difference. I have also tried creating a new account & logging on as a new user

If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
