Disk constantly caching.

Q: Disk constantly caching.

This is about the worst case I've ever seen of a crippled pc. When I first looked at this pc, there was only 177MB of free disk space out of 110GB. I installed the drive onto another pc so I could run a virus scan and I also ran malwarebytes. There were thousands of temporary files that I deleted and the trojan vundo virus was found and supposedly removed. There is now about 70GB of free space. I reinstalled the drive back into the original pc and it woks ok in safe mode. In normal mode, the disk still constantly caches. The wallpaper appears but the desktop icons do not appear. Below is the HJT log. Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Disk constantly caching.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9 200 gig Hard Drive, 8mb cache buffer, running on XP. with P4, 3.06. When I run Boot Vis, it says "warning disk write cache disabled". If this is enabled, won't my computer boot faster and run and load faster, in general?

It seems to me I have seen somewhere that it has to do with hyperthreading, it has to be disabled? If this is true, is there any advantage in disabling hyperthreading in order get the 8 mb cache enabled. Is hyperthreading reall necessary? I run mostly games on this computer.

SHOULD it be enabled, and if so how do I do all this, in the bios?

A:disk write caching disabled

According to this article:

Write caching may cause slower disk performance in 2k and XP. I haven't really experimented with write caching on my Maxtor drive (a 200gB) or my Western Digital (WD-800JB). In fact, I'm not even sure if they have write-caching enabled.

You might want to check out this link, which tells you how to disable write-caching (it's Device Manager-based):

Of course, as I'm sure you know, be careful when doing things with your hard drives.

Is there any means of instilling Floppy Disk Caching in Windows XP?

Hiyas, ok when running bootvis to see my system boot up time I see,"Disk write cacheing is disabled". Now how the heck did I disable this, and how do i reenable? Could this be turned off by default whenever a bad block is detected?

EDIT: I tried to optimize it and the process did nothing.

A:Enable Disk Write Caching.

Open My Computer right click your harddrive choose properties then the Hardware tab, then properties again then the Policies tab and see if "Enable write caching on this Disk" is checked off.

In a separate post, I noted that boot error (3F0 and 3F6) problems went away when I physically removed the failed SanDisk 16GB mSATA SSD drive from the motherboard.  My question now is, do I really need to even replace the mSATA SSD?  If I did want to replace it, do I just get a new blank one and reinstall it?  Or...does the SSD need to be "configured" in some way before/after installation.   My PC seems to be running pretty well without the 16GB mSATA Disk Caching SSD right now. Thanks in advance!

Dear Forum Users,

I have two HDs in my system:

1. WD Caviar Blue 500GB (OS Drive)
2. WD Caviar Green 1TB

I've read that enabling write-caching may speed up drive performance. I checked on my 1TB drive, it was already enabled. On my 500GB drive though it was disabled.

So I then decided to enable write-caching on my 500GB drive. I proceeded to do so without any apparent problems. However after doing a system restart I saw that it went back to being disabled again.

I've tried this several times already, same thing each time!

Enable write caching restart write caching disabled again.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? How to fix this?

Hi peeps and thanks in advance for any help you can give me! My laptop is doing my head in thanks to its new-found ability to chew up free disk space on my C:/ drive. Not sure if this problem has been on-going for a few weeks or something, but it's come to a head now!! A few bits of info that might be handy: Vista Home Premium 32bit, laptop is about three years old, 160GB HDD partitioned into a C: and a D: (both with approx 70GB total space according to Properties).
The story goes like this:

1) Got low disk space warning pop up (something like 300MB left!) - thought that this was entirely plausible since my wife keeps taking videos of our little baby on her camera and saving them on the lappy!
2) Decided to move some User folders from the C: to the D: and in the process moved about 5GB which then freed up several gig of space on the C: drive. Then I noticed that this was consistently dropping and the HDD light was flickering all the time, even when the laptop was not in use.
3) Updated and ran all the following programs: AVG 2011 Free, CCleaner, CWShredder, Malwarbytes - and nothing untoward reported.
4) Booted into safe mode and ran the programs again and still nothing reported.
5) Accessed VSS records via a command prompt and this was set to UNBOUNDED maximum capacity and showing as 16GB in use on disk, so revised this down to 12GB (a cautious approach, I admit!) and freed up a bit more space but this again is slowly being reduced.
6) Ran WinDirStat and this is showing ... Read more

Hello guys, I hope someone can help here, I've registered on purpose!

A close friend of mine has problems with the hard drive, I reckon. His disk usage it's always close to 80% reaching 100% several times, making impossibile to accomplish even the easiest things like listening music or watching SD videos. I've checked the processes and eveything seems right, cpu usage is very low. I can't figure out what's the problem. The notebook is new, 2 weeks...

I'm attaching a screenshot of a crystal disk report, it's in italian but you should be able to understand it!

A:Disk usage constantly (almost) to 100%

Hi there
Check out things like -- Page file, Hibernation (Sleep) options, Virtual memory and paging file sizes etc, start up services.

HDD on laptops can be poor performers but that is another issue.

Your computer should really have a minimum of 4GB RAM these days but some machines will work OK with 2GB if you don't want to run more than one or two applications together.

If you are editing large photo files (photoshop) check the use of the scratch files.

I don't speak Italian but from your illustration it would appear that your HDD is a SLOW 5400 RPM one with ZERO cache size which will be a really rotten performer.

I'd swap that for an SSD -- but you need to provide more info of your machine set up first to fix the current problem.

Have you tried scrolling to the right in the Disk "frame" and sort on the Total column?

You could probably also check under CPU and sort on the CPU column. The program using that much disk activity is probably also using a lot of CPU.

And try a reboot if you haven't tried that.

Hi Hi I have windows installed on my SSD, with a second drive for storage and applications ( non SSD). I've noticed the drive light is on constantly and when I check performance in task manager it is showing 100% and never drops.

I tried disabling all startup in MSCOFIG and task manager but it did not have an effect.

my system does run well still for other programs but accessing the drive is slow. I have a feeling it is failing, but would like to know if there are definite ways to confirm. I'm not looking forward to Installing another Drive.

A:Disk drive constantly whirring...

You can start by hitting control+Alt+Delete and going into Task Manager.
Hit the Processes tab to see if there is a program that is not functioning correctly. Also, if you have several programs in your systray, one of those may be causing the problem.

it started just 2 days ago and my C:// still has some around 18 GB out of ~220GB disk space but suddenly the computer notified me that I have a low disk space and I have to manage and delete files. then I tried to delete some files and immediately removed them from the recycling bin and then the problem started.

my drive C suddenly shifts its memory space from around 43GB down to at least 600MB then it slowly adds up again to 43GB. i notice the shifts because I try to refresh the My Computer page and it really does diminishes or adds up 0.1GB each second i refresh.

Please help me. My computer processes has been acting slowly ever since.

While dealing with another hard drive Problem, ive noticed in Ressource Monitor, that the process 'System' is constantly writing to my main drive. Sometimes its about 100-200 KiB/sec, today ive watched it for a while, and its writing action was 1.5 MiB/sec for quite a while! Later on it was about 300-400 KiB/sec. Why does this process write so much data to my disk? Considering Windows running times, this adds up to multiple times the size of my hard drive. Anyone knows whats going on here?

OK, I'm a dummy. I let friends and family use my computer to go to letmewatchthis.com. No doubt I've got a whopper of a virus(es) and I know I should've followed my common sense and not done it. But here we are, and (as everyone is) I am DESPERATE. Can you please review this and give me an idea of where/what/how I should handle this? Thank you so much for taking some of your valuable time to help.

Some time ago I've noticed that the hard drive on my laptop is constantly doing something in short bursts even when I'm not doing anything at my computer. The resource monitor showed a series of short duration spikes with the disk going from no to 80-100% activity every few seconds. When I'm running multiple programs these spikes are causing a bit of lag, nothing major but enough for me to notice.

Picture (this is while idling):

Defrag was performed.
I've ran the anti-virus - nothing found.
Ran chkdsk - no problems detected.
Ran memory diagnostic too - no problems with the memory.
The system isn't new.

so I am not sure what is causing this? and could these constant bursts of activity cause disk failure eventually?

I have a problem that I've found no solution for as yet and wanted to know if anybody else has experianced this issue.
I have 3 SATA drives installed, all using the same drivers.
1 of these devices shows up in windows explorer for a short time and then dissapears, and I also lose this when checking with Disk Management, always the same device, other 2 are fine.

The device is picked up after reboot (most of the time) but doesn't stay up for long. I've tried installing large games i.e. WOW onto a partition on this disk, but the device does not stay up long enough to install.

This is a new seagate drive and running seatools shows no errors, infact when the device is showing within explorer I can write to it.

I have no idea why the device get's lost after a period of time or even the odd reboot fails to pick up the device, but always shows in the BIOS.

At first I thought this was hardware related, so as mentioned already I ran seatool, I also then swapped my SATA cable and power cable with one of the other drives, this made no difference, so now I'm back to thinking this is software related.

Have checked teh system logs, the only thing I could find was this error:
LogName: System
Source: volmgr
Error: The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Not sure if this is related, but that's from my last reboot and the disk is not showing.

Recently my computer began to experience some slowdown, and abruptly after a reboot (nothing caused this reboot, I just felt like it was time to do it) my Windows would no longer run. It would just constantly take me to the main screen that has choices like "Boot up normally" and "Boot up using last known good configuration" and the like. These never heeded any results, with the computer rebooting itself during the process and occasionally lightning-fast flashing a blue screen which then heeded a reboot.

My solution; just reformat. Reluctantly, I backed up my files using Linux and reformatted the computer. Using Windows Vista, which is what I was using originally, things worked fine for about a whole 6 hours then chaos ensued once more. Alright, maybe it's the operating system, so I reformatted using Windows 7 instead. This worked good for a whole 2-3 days with no issue, and now I'm at the worst point in the whole process.

A:XP Prot Workstation hard disk runs constantly

It looks like something to do with my pagefile or the system that activates it. I am getting 2000 to 4000 page writes per second when I start a program. I tried setting the page file to zero, restarting, then restoring it, but to no effect (I could not find the pagefile.sys file to delete it as some people suggested). I even tried Sysinternals pagefile defrag tool.

Hello everyone,
As can be read in this topic, I'm having problems with the HDD light on the front of my computer. It is almost constantly on, even when I'm not doing anything with my computer at all.
Also, ever since it started, my computer is very slow. It seems like it's constantly busy doing things, the problem is that I don't know what it's doing.
As you read in the old topic, I've already replaced the HD for a brand new one. I've cloned my old drive onto the new one, and the problem persists, so I guess it has something to do with the things on the drive, and not with the drive itself. The problem with the noise that is mentioned in the topic is solved.
On my MsConfig screen, there are a lot of services checked, is this normal, or could this possibly be causing some problems?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) on an Acer Aspire M1641. The computer is about 6 years old and I've replaced the power supply and the graphics card (and the HD, of course).
I've also created a factory-reset disk using Acer eRecovery software. So, if necessary, I could reinstall Windows on my old HD to see if it would work. However, I'd rather keep it in the current state (with all the files still on it) so I'll have some kind of backup if my new drive would ever fail. If someone thinks reinstalling windows would work, I would try it though.
PS: Excuse me for accidental grammar mistakes, english is not my native language

A:Hard disk light almost constantly on, computer very slow

The services are checked because they are being used.  If you remove the check from a box it disables the service.
Open the Task Manager and click on processes to see what is constantly running.

Hi all,

When you load a webpage, the files (images, ...) that the webpage contains will be downloaded. If the server hosting the webpage goes down while the files are being downloaded, then IE's Temporary Internet Files will contain partially downloaded files. When the server is back up and running, and you refresh the page, the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading, and will never be downloaded again. The webpage will never display the files that were partially downloaded, and the only way to fix this is to delete the Temporary Internet Files.

Other browsers do not have this problem. It looks like IE does not compare the file size in the Cache, to the file size on the server, but only compares the date, which is the same.

How to reproduce the problem (for developers):
-create a webpage that contains a big file (jpg, swf, or any file).
-on a client computer, clear the Temporary Internet Files, then start loading the page.
-before the file has time to finish downloading, stop and start the web server.
-look inside the Temporary Internet Files, and you will see a partially downloaded file.
-refresh the page, and the partially downloaded files will not finish downloading.

Note: I tried many different file headers, but it looks like whatever header you set for the file, even "no caching ..." headers, the problem always happens.

I just have a question about this. I got a vista home premium 32-bit gateway laptop. And I see the option to delete DNS Cache in CCleaner. All I'm curious about is, what is that really going to do? Anything major besides make my pages load .2 seconds slower?

A:DNS Caching

In general, it's not going to do anything other than force the system to go out and repopulate the cache as you surf the web.

Also, if the DNS Cache is "poisoned" it can prevent you from reaching a website that you want to go to.

I have all my external drives set to "quick removal" option, so I don't have to use the "safe-removal" option.

On my internal drives, I have it set to "Enable write caching."

It says that a power outage could cause data loss.
Since I always use the "sleep" option, is this option safe?

Hello Paul,

Unless you have power outages often, then I wouldn't worry about it set like that.

Ok, so my hard drive in ACHI mode does not allow me to enable write caching but in compatibility mode it does.

Should I enable write caching?

Also this whole thing about memory loss is bugging me on what they are talking about. I have a laptop with a battery and mostly has power. But what if power were to cut off or it gets somehow unpluged, will my HD be corrupt? or would that "Word" document I was working on that was not saved be gone, everything else will be fine?

A:Write caching

You can read this tutorial from Vistax64 on it. Basically, it's not recommended for laptops without a UPS. I believe if the power were to go out, only the temp. cache would be lost, so like your word document you were working on might be lost if it were to go out.

Also a tut on how to enable it with AHCI on, but I don't think it was relevant if you read all the comments in the tutorial.

I have a company network with 2 internal dns servers on and
Using DHCP.

2 problem Win7 clients.

When I run ipconfig /all on both it shows both DNS servers as expected

We have a corporate server on AWS and it's IP address changed on Monday during a restart.
Shouldn't have but it did, so we are stuck with a new public facing DNS name for that server, so we updated the friendly CNAME record to point to the new address.

18 of our 20 internal clients, including Win7, 8 and 10 clients and Mac and Linux clients are all finding the corporate server now using the original friendly name.

But 2 Win7 clients are still not getting there.

On both, if we run
nslookup <friendly.domname.com>

It returns the name of of our primary internal DNS server (as nameserver) and the NEW IP address of the host address

So it seems that the client's base OS DNS lookup returns the correct IP.

If I paste that IP into either chrome or Internet Explorer, I get the correct website.

However, if I enter <friendly.domname.com> into either browser (and Firefox) a different website appears.

I can in Chrome test the dns resolver using chrome://net-internals/#dns which returns a list of addresses in chromes internal cache.
And I can flush that browser dns cache by clicking the "clear host cache" button

If I then try the same <friendly.domname.com> again, the cache list is re-populated with a bunch of urls acce... Read more

I have been looking around for information about using a onboard msata ssd as a boot drive for fast start up etc.
I have found information about loading windows directly to this drive (setting this drive as c and lists of ways to move the my music files etc to another partition so that when windows starts it only reads program information. However it sounds as if all or most programs would be saved to the drive not windows only.
Other information has described setting this up as a cache via srt with the cache automatically recognizing whats used most often and storing it there saving the issue of less frequently programs slowing it down.

Does anyone use this system? Do you know of a good msata ssd?
Is it possible to set up a drive as a boot drive and only store windows there?
Can you use onboard msata as a boot drive for windows and another small ssd for srt caching?

Sorry about all the questions a total noob to msata and ssd caching. My mobo will have srt / onboard msata capability and Id like to use it.
If a thread already exists about this please let me know what to search by as I haven't found anything on mSata here.

I am about to buy my SSD, but I don't know whether I can use the Crucial M4 64GB for caching, next to using it for my complete OS and a game (maybe two, 7 GB average). Because what I would like to do, is put my OS on it (Win7 64-bit) and the game. And then use (a part of) the space left (around 30GB, reserving 27GB for the OS and 3~4GB for the game) for Caching.

Will this work? Or can I only use the Intel SSD Caching on a empty SSD?

P.S. Someone told me I could only use ~20GB or 60GB for SRT Caching, I find this hard to believe, is it true?
P.P.S. Is it true I ought to put the SRT Caching to 64GB? Or would there actually be a difference if I would put my OS and Call of Duty 4 directly on my SSD?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

We use a WPAD file hosted on a Websense appliance and use IE11 on Windows 7 x64.

We are seeing some performance issues with the Websense delivery of WPAD and have discovered that every computer is making a large amount of calls to the websense appliance to retrieve WPAD.dat. (Up to 1000 per machine in some cases)

We have worked with Websense and found that they were returning a 'no-cache' option in the WPAD response header. Via a patch we have had this removed.
However I still can't find a cached WPAD file on my machine that I am using for testing and have checked all the registry entries I can think of related to caching.

I have windows Vista home basic 32 bit operating system. If i do the same in firefox 4 then on second request it doesnt give 304 and content is served from cache and i am able to see the content there in firefox cache.
1). In case of IE9 if content is not there in cache then how it is giving HTTP response code 304 (not modified)
2). Is there any other cache other than disc cache if yes then how can i see the content of that cache.

You could try to update the mainboard bios if there's a new version available. It won't definitely fix it to be able, but there is a decent chance. Also, the controller drivers should be updated to latest, if they are not already.
