Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

Q: Keyboard - Shift & Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

Good afternoon. We have a Yoga 900 and have problems with the keyboard keys T, Y, backspace, shift and tab not working. We have tried updating the keyboard driver, Windows Update, using the onscreen keyboard, and rebooting the computer - all with the same results. Does anyone have any solutions on fixing this, please? Thank you.

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I am not sure if I am posting in the right section of the forum so forgive me if i am not. I am using a compaq laptop with windows 7 for an OS. The G, H, 8, and backspace keys decided to stop working. For some reason the only way to get any of those buttons to work is if you put on CAPS lock and hold shift. Then you can use those keys. Im not sure if any other keys have been affected as of yet. Ive tried to google for a solution, which normally helps me fix any computer issues I come accross. So far I can only find the reccomendation to hold the function button and press numlock, and its supposed to remove the, "sticky keys." I am not quite sure what exactly the sticky keys are but I didnt think it was the problem here, and the laptop doesnt seem to have a function button anyways. I have seen the option to turn on sticky keys when holding shift on other computers or tapping shift 8 times, I dont know if it was turned on or if sticky keys cause certain keys to not work unless you hold shift while CAPS lock is on, but if this sounds like something you can help with please advise me of any suggestions. I appreciate any time you take to help or even if youve read this far. Thank you

A:Certain keyboard keys not working unless you press caps lock and hold shift?

First thing you do is get a canned air and clean out the keyboard... slowly, carefully, then do it again with the laptop upside down. That rules out the most common cause... dirt, dust, and debris.

For some reason a windows keyboard shortcut I use a lot (right click Shift del, to permanently delete a file) has stopped working. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to trouble shoot this or get it working again?

It only works if I select and click delete from the menu while holding down the shift key, but of course, that's not much of a shortcut.

A:standard keyboard shortcuts stopped working

when that's issue you got??
i'm guess maybe you have change something or you hold shift twice times, so the stickykeys change.

I cannot find a keyboard related software or driver for your laptop. I will research the issue more.

Obviously it just does not want you searching for asus or azuz (which would be changed in google to "did you mean asus?") laptops for a replacement

I woke up this morning and some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working.

Im nearly 100% sure it isnt a faulty keyboard but rather a virus or something that is remapping my keyboard. The keyboard has been working fine up until today when the f, y, m, and ' keys stopped working all at once. Nothing spilled on the keyboard.. nothing like that. Ive tried a system restore but it didnt solve anything.

I tried to do some research on my own, but didnt find much.. one guy had the same problem, but I didnt see any concrete fixes.

One thing that makes me think its a remapping problem is that when i hold down the f, m, y, and ' keys and hit x, the return is " \eqx ". Holding different combos of the keys that arent working yields different results, but results nonetheless, and since theres some sort of return when i hit the keys, i assume they still work but something on the computer happened. The other person who had this issue that I found gave me the idea of holding down the keys and hitting x, since he did it and had the same results.

Is there a known virus that I may have? Any way to restore the key set/map to factory defaults? Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

So, randomly one day, I turned on my laptop and couldn't log in, because a lot of my keys weren't working. The keys are:  4, 7, =, q, w, e, r, u, i, o, p, [, a, s, d, k, l, ;, and some other keys like delete.  I've tried setting bios settings to default, tried updating bios to the latest. Tried the "removing the battery" trick, tried removing hp support assistance, tried uninstalling keyboards (including hidden) via device manager, and tried installing pretty much every driver on the HP website.  USB keyboard works, but it's not an ideal fix. Would really appreciate any help that can be offered please.  Thank you!

Yesterday my PC (a Tecra W50-A; with Windows 8.1 x64) performed an automatic windows update. Upon finishing the update, some keyboard keys stopped working (keys A, B, N, right Shift and both Enter's). Since everything was fine before the update, I think it is not hardware-related but rather associated to the update itself, such as installed software or drivers.
In the meanwhile, I have tried to restore my PC to a time point prior to the Windows Update, but the problem persists. I have also tried to find the original drivers for this model in Toshiba website, but couldn't figure out which driver to download/install (none specific for keyboard).

Looking forward for your help.
Thank you in advance

Just setting up a new computer. Have a logitech receiver and wireless mouse + keyboard ... batteries in both are good (I checked with voltmeter).

So everything is fine and I'm setting up windows. I go to local security policy to disable the administrator account and then go to rename it, and find out my keys aren't working!! But for some odd reason, the shortcut buttons to calculator and internet explorer work just fine... just none of the keys (numbers or letters) work. cntrl alt del doesn't work.

So I try a keyboard that is from a working computer, and that won't work either. I'm really stumped. The USB ports should be fine as the MOUSE works fine (the wireless mouse and also other mouses work fine). The motherboard is brand new.
The working keyboard I tested doesn't seem to be even getting power on this new computer. Not sure why. I can't even get into the BIOS cause the keyboard doesn't work!

Since upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, the shift keys (both of them) on my pavilion have developed a problem. After a non-specific amount of time, but never any longer than a few minutes after boot (and sometimes straight away) the shift keys do not work. If I revert to Windows 8.1 they function perfectly, but if I then upgrade to Windows 10 again, the problem returns. I have tried rolling back (and updating) the synaptics touchpad driver as I found some posts that suggested this might be relevant. This does nothing.  I have connected an external keyboard. This works fine under Windows 10. I have removed the keyboard in device manager and had it picked up again on a reboot. None of the things I have tried have made a difference. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

Hi i am hoping someone can help with my problem.  I have a G505 laptop for over a year now.  About two months ago some keys on the right hand side of the keyboard stopped working.  Mainly the shift key, enter key, return key.  Other keys around these working fine.  I cannot use Word or type emails now and rely on the onscreen keyboard to compete return or enter functions which is painful.  Also, sometimes when I boot the laptop up, the screen is very dark.  The only way to rectify this is to reboot (sometimes several times) or for some reason if I plug in a HDMI cable to link laptop to TV, the brightness returns straight away. I would be very grateful for any guidance on these issues. Many thanks in advance and kind regards,JB

Hello everyone. Today my shift and ctrl keys stopped working correctly... it happened while I was playing and later when I tried to change the language using Alt + Shift. I checked if Sticky Keys and other similar options weren't turned on by accident, but they weren't.

And after some time spent in trying to fix the problem I opened the On-Screen Keyboard and noticed that when I use my Ctrl key, Shift is pressed automatically as well (it's just what On-Screen Keyboard says). The same thing happens when I press Shift, then the Ctrl key "presses itself". It so happens that all four (left and right shift, and left and right ctrl) keys are pressed at the same time, when I press just one of them.

Does everyone know where the problem could be from and how I can fix it... it's really annoying, I can't use any of the combinations like Ctrl + V, Ctrl + C, Ctrl + A, etc. The problem started while I was playing Assassin's Creed; I sometimes hear sounds like too-much-buttons-pressed while I play it, but I've never had this problem until today. I have no idea what it could be, I tried everything I know.

If it helps, the problem is still there while I chat or surf the web through Asus Express Gate, when the windows isn't running at all.

PS: Sorry if I used strange phrases or words, I am not a native English speaker.

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

i'm having a problem with my toshiba laptop keyboard. about a week ago i noticed i was no longer able to use the control key to copy and paste, but i rarely use that key for anything else, so i didn't think much of it except that i must've accidently changed some command. now, my shift key isn't working--as you can tell from the lack of capitalization in this. i think this is a different problem than what was addressed in earlier posts about shift key problems in toshiba laptops. in my case, the shift key worked only sporadically. currently, it's not working at all. first the right one stopped working, now the left one isn't working either. there doesn't seem to be any pattern to when they do/don't work, so it seems unlikely that these keys suddenly got stuck or something. i'm checking for viruses now. does anyone have any other ideas? (now it's working...that's so strange, and annoying).

Basic: OS = Windows 7 Pro; computer is a Toshiba Satellite L70-A
Yesterday, I had numerous working shortcuts to shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+G to start GoogleEarth). This morning, after seeing an error message related to APO3GUI, and finding it related to DTS sound, I un-checked the DTS Studio Sound in the startup tab of System Configuration, and restarted the computer. I had not, prior to that, attempted to use any shortcut keys. However, after the restart, I found my shortcut keys had all "died." Subsequently, in my attempts to get them working again, I have done the following, in order, with restarts between each one, to no avail:

1. Re-enabled DTS Studio Sound in System Configuration.
2. Checked Windows updates and saw two Windows Security updates, KB 3212646 and KB3207752, showed as having been installed today (1/12). Uninstalled both from Windows Update.
3. Ran System File Checker -- no issues found.
4. Un-assigned and reassigned a shortcut combination.
5. Started in SAFE mode.
6. Started from "Last Known Good Configuration".
7. Did System Restore back two days.

I'm out of ideas!

P.S. -- wasn't sure which forum this would be better in, so here by default.
