Recycle Bin does not change from full to empty

Q: Recycle Bin does not change from full to empty

My Recycle Bin - XP Professional SP 3 - does not change from full to empty. The error message:Cannot delete SCANCL: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.I tried these ways already, one, I went to regedit and deleted this key, {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, to see if the operating system would replace it and Recycle Bin. It got rid of Recycle Bin, but a fresh copy didn't appear on reboot, so I reinserted the key {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} and I got back the unchangeable Recycle Bin. I tried way two, I booted to safe mode and command prompt, to C:\, and removed the file protections, then took out Recycle Bin. It did not replace it with a copy without the problem. The only problem is the unchanging Recycle Bin, items sent there appear there, and disappear when Recycle Bin is emptied, save the SCANCL problem. I want a way to solve this short of reinstalling the O S.If there is no solution, I can live with it. Mebbe. NO I FREAKING CAN'T. Please some sage from the geek city states save me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'll get straight to the problem: The recycle bin icon on the desktop looks full but when u actually open the recycle bin it is empty. When I try to empty the recycle bin it says "Are you sure you want to delete these 7 items ?". I have this portable HDD connected to my PC. When i disconnect the drive and open the recycle bin the "Empty the recycle bin" option is disabled. So this means that the files shown by the recycle bin are from the external drive. Now is there a way to access these files. Also the "Show all hidden files" option is checked. I just want to make sure that i don't lose any useful data.
Thanks.

Are you running any Symantec products?

Last time I checked, they all used the "hidden recycle bin" which saves all items apparently deleted.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

This used to be a sign of infection, you should read this sticky: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f112...ed-203704.html

If you cannot complete any of the 5 steps for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed, and post your logs in The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you. However, it is very important to make mention of any of the steps that you were not able to complete.

After you?ve posted your logs, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are very busy.

No use trying to assist if the system is infected, get it looked at first.

Hello,

My recycle bin full/empty icons won't refresh automatically.

I need to press F-5 key to refresh them.

I have tried lots of ways to fix it.

I think it may have something to do with the icon cache, not sure though.

I am stumped.

I looked in the tutorials here but found nothing.

Maybe I didn't look hard enough?

Any help would be appreciated.

I liked the recycle bin icons used in Windows 8 better than Windows 10, so I changed them successfully to the Win 8 version. But, the new icons do not change to reflect full / empty even though both have been changed. The standard Win 10 recycle bin icons do work okay when I returned to defaults.

Any ideas why the new ones don't change as they should?

So recently I downloaded a Windows Vista icon pack from DeviantART and I changed the default folder ico, so I was wondering how to you change the second folder icon for when a folder is full? When I put the icons in medium/large and then add a file to an empty one it changes them back to the default Windows 7 one. (I used Regedit to change them).

I move files from anywhere to the recycle bin (clicking delete or dragging,) but the icon does not change. If I right-click the icon, "Empty Recycle Bin" is grayed out. Clicking "Refresh" does nothing.

Here's the odd part: opening the bin/folder or deleting files with the folder open will change the icon in the way that it should.

Emptying the bin changes back to the "empty" iicon as it should.

1) You can go open recycle bin and then empty it. It just takes one more step to accomplish it.

2) If you have ccleaner you can restore or just clean with ccleaner itself. Honestly I've not used recycle bin for over a month.

I just deleted a bunch of files and tried to "take out the trash." When I click [empty] it makes the little crinkling sound but the desktop icon still shows it full. It continues to ask if I want to delete these same 22 items. When I open the recycle bin, nothing is displayed, even when I show all hidden files. When I delete new files, they don't go to the bin, they just disappear. I've also tried emptying it in safe mode but it doesn't work.

Any ideas? Is there a way I can reinstall just the recycle bin from my installation disk? I'd appreciate someone's input. Thanks.

Welcome to TSF.

I will move this thread to the appropriate category.

No problem, we can help you fix that now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean... Read more

Hi my name is Melanie and I'm new here. I found this site trying to find out what is wrong with my Recycle bin.

Okay, on my desktop it shows there is trash in the bin. I open it, there is nothing there. But I click "Empty Recycle bin" and it says "Are you sure you want to delete these 23 items?" I say yes. It makes a sound like it is emptying, but when I close it, the desktop bin still shows trash in there. I open it again, still nothing there... click empty again and says the same thing. Does the same thing over and over.

I then deleted more documents to see if that would get it working, but it didn't It still shows trash on the desktop, but when opened... nothing is there. And the number 23 doesn't change... (which it should have ofcourse since I deleted more items)... and still won't empty.

I don't know a whole lot about computers, but I have run Ad-Aware, deleted all my temp files and cookies, ran virus scan, and defragmented my computer hoping that would work, but nothing!

Someone please help me!

Click 'Properties'.
Make sure 'Use one setting for all drives:' is selected.
Check the box 'Do not move files to the Recycle Bin'.
Click 'OK'.
That will completely disable the recycle bin.
Reboot, then re-enable the recycle bin.

Have you tried to empty the recycle bin in safe mode ?

To get into safe mode, keep tapping the F8 key early in the boot up process, (some keyboards may require you to turn on the F Lock first)

Alternatively you could try this handy little program, MOVE ON BOOT

You can select the files and have the utility delete them on the next boot up.

Try right-clicking on the Recycle Bin and choose Properties, once the Properties dialog box is opened check to see if the box Do not move files to Recycle Bin is not checked and that Display delete confirmation dialog box is checked. I usually also have my maximum size for the Recycle Bin set at 5%, this way I don't use much disk space. You can also give this a look http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;173416.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

when you delete an item how are you doing it, do you right click then select delete?
or are you using a key shortcut.
the key shortcut deletes without putting the item in the bin. also your bin size may have something to do with it, as if the items are too large they will be deleted without being stored in the bin, although you generally see a pop up regarding that.
may be worth checking the size of the bin

A:Recycle Bin - bug - cannot empty

Hello Flav,

Are you not able to actually empty (permanently delete files) the Recycle Bin, or is this just an issue with it's icon?

If you are unable to delete the files in Recycle Bin, then the tutorial below may be able to help with that.

For the icon not refreshing issue, the tutorial below may be able to help with that.

Hope this helps,

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with a 111 GB SSD and 2 TB hard drive , 16gb of RAM.

After successfully moving a user profile from my SSD to my hard drive, and deleting the profile from the SSD I saw that hardly any space was freed on my SSD. I tried to empty the recycle bin but found on successive attempts that it keeps asking me if it is OK to delete these 25 items.

Any idea what is going on here? Why can't the recycle bin remove these files? The problem with the recycle bin may not have anything to do with the attempt to erase the user profile, but it seems likely.

Thanks in advance.

A:Cannot empty Recycle bin

Hello Michael,

It could be a corrupted Recycle Bin since it's not deleting the files when emptying it. You might see if using the method in the tutorial may be able to help.

I'm having a problem with my home computer's recycle bin. Anything that I delete is bypassing the recycle bin, and I don't get a message asking me if I want to move the files to the recycle bin, it just ask if I'm sure I want to delete. The icon is empty, and I've checked and verified the properties to insure that the bypass feature is not in use and that the confirmation dialouge is checked. I also noticed an extra my computer icon, and a my network places icon that was never there before. I deleted them but they didn't go to the bin either. Any ideas? Please help.

Dear Forum,

I am just enquring as to whether or not too permantely delete the contents in my recycle bin and if it is affecting the performance of my machine.

I had the Norton team delete the back up of the previous version of their software and I went for assistance online and they decided to go along with my idea of removing all the items in the %temp% and temp folder.

I gather that the other files - I am not too sure if I may require them down the track.

I did not know that there was that much in the recycle bin and have not been advised on the best action.

I took a few snap shots of what type of items are in the current file at the moment.

A:How often should you empty your recycle bin

How often to empty that bin?
As often as you wish.

Will it impact performance?
In theory, yes. In reality, no.
In theory, the more files that you have on your computer, then the longer it takes for security software to complete a full scan.

Download CCleaner (avoid using the registry tool).
Let it clean up old files for you - as well as empty the recycle bin.

I have an external HDD that when I run a print directory of it I end up with 300 lines of misc. previously deleted items that are still appearing with names (no actual files or size but 300 plus folders and files of no size all named anything that's been deleted off the drive). I have tried emptying my recycling bin on the desktop, I've tried running ccleaners method of cleaning the free space and emptying recycling bin on the external hdd and also enabled viewing of system protected files to try and manually delete the files. Can someone please help me figure out how to clear those out of my recycling bin so they will stop appearing in my print directory?

A:How to empty E:\$RECYCLE.BIN

Well, I know you can decrease the size of the recycle bin on that drive, or even turn it off. that should empty it. Right click on Recycle Bin on desktop and choose Properties. Click on the bin for your E: drive and either change size, or choose Don't move files to the recycle bin...

The Recycle Bin in your 2nd Drive is a hidden folder. Click on Tools> Folder options> View> Show all files and folders

Also have to click show protected operating system files to see the recycler folder.

Well, I have three files in the recycle bin but the images do not appear.

When I click empty recycle bin it appears saying:

" Are you sure you want to eliminate this 3 items? "

I click yes and then:

"It is not possible to eliminate Dc35: Acces denied

Make sure the disc is not full or protected against writing and that the file is not actually being used"

(this was my translation from portuguese to english)

How can I eliminate this 3 files? The strange this is that the icons do not appear in the recycle bin, but the icon of the recycle bin is with paper.

Thanks

I sent a music folder to the Recycle bin. when i try to empty, it asks "Are you sure you want to delete Zeromancer?" i click yes, then it says "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

But when i look in the Recycle bin, it says there are 0 objects. The icon has paper in it and it gives me the option of emptying.

I dunno what to do!

My recycle bin has not emptied its contents in a long time. After researching this issue, I see it's possible that a virus or trojan may be involved. I have run spybot and hijack this but I'm unable to determine a problem. There was a suggestion that I could post a hijackthis log for someone to view and give me an expert opinion...hopefully that will work. thanks very much!HiJack This log removed. ~ OBYes, of course I mean it doesn't empty even when trying to empty the recycle bin. thanks

Can you please explain what you mean by "My recycle bin has not emptied its contents in a long time"? Mine never empties unless I empty it myself. Are you saying that you are trying to empty it and it won't empty?

Help my recycle bin is not showing anything even right after I delete a file. Where are my files going to? How do I fix this?

A:recycle bin is empty.

Right click on the Recycle Bin icon.Choose Properties.See if Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted is checked. If it is, Custom Size will be UNCHECKED. You will have to check this, which will uncheck the immediate removal option.Click Apply to save the change.

I just tried to empty to my recycle only to find that the only way to do that is to select each file and then delete them. I cannot just click on empty recycle bin.

Is this normal in Windows 8 or do I have something set funny?

Thanks for any and all help with this.

When I went to empty out my recycle bin, it says dc441.avi is in use and cannot be deleted be cause it is readonly. When I open up the recycle bin though, it is empty. When I go to my C:\ drive I see a recycled folder which is 5GB of deleted stuff...How can I empty it? thanks.

A:Cannot Empty Recycle Bin

If that is the case, try opening the folder in safe mode and see if you have the option to delete it.

Recycle bin problems can be caused by either malware,
anti-virus or anti-spyware applications conflicting,
system restore abnormalities
and I've also seen & experienced those kinda problems
with multiple disk drives after mis-using them in the way files are moved.

So, basically try safe mode.

I'm cautious about workarounds involving the recycle bin, though.
So observe, and approach it carefully, as in don't try to delete all 5gbs at once if you can.

Recycler Volumes are different, also. They are where the system restore files are.
Best open system restore utility and simply set a new restore point.
Disable it, then enable it. Thats all it takes to wipe out all previous files and start fresh.

You can check to see what space has been allocated for those files, also.
Default setting when winXP is loaded I think is a percentage of total drive space available.
That percentage is too high considering the new BIG hds, imho.

12% of a 120gb drive = 14.4 gbs, enough to store 3 months of full system restore files.

I use 2%.

Seems to me that some windows updates leave files after they install.
Some are on the C:\ as uninstall folders/files.
If ya don't expect to go back after installation and cancel those patches, those uninstall files can be deleted.
Some could be in recycler volumes, too. I think i've seen that.

So make sure of what that 5gbs ... Read more
