I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there, I am having some trouble with my laptop recently. The wireless will not turn on and stays off no matter how many times I press the wireless switch button that's above the keyboard, always remaining that deathly orange colour which indicates that the wireless is off. Product Name and Number: Compaq Presario CQ50-215-215CAOperating System installed?: Windows Vista 32-bit OEMError message (if any) ?        : No Error message kinda. First time I press the wireless button, the HP Wireless Assistant popup says "WLAN: Off". I press it again and says "WLAN: Disabled" and the cycle repeats when i press it a bunch of times.Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred?: This is what I think the problem is. A few days before my wireless stopped working, I had my battery disconnected and just running off the AC adapter. My dad accidentally unplugged my AC while he was vacuuming the living room. At the POST I got an cmos checksum error message. Computer normally booted with an incorrect time/date in the bios, but at the time internet was still working. Fast forward a few days later, my wireless then stops working. Other info/Thins I've tried-I goto Manage Network Connections->There's a red x on my Wireless Network Connection icon but upon right clicking it it says its "enabled" with only the option of disabling it. Inharrharrt You mention Win10 in your post, but according the the HP Product page for your PC, it came with Win7 preinstalled. I ran into a similar situation upgrading an HP DV6 laptop from Win7 to Win10 -- in that, no matter what I did, the WiFi button LED stayed orange. In discussing this with HP support, we determine the problem was because, when I did the Upgrade, I had the WiFi disabled (using that button) so I could do the downloads using wired networking.  So, when the machine upgraded to Win10, it did not install the right WiFi drivers and it thus, stayed disabled. I spend a lot of time on these forums getting links to drivers and installed them all (one at a time) -- and NOTHING worked! What fixed that was complicated, as follows:1) Restore the PC back to Win7 -- using an image backup I had made with Macrium Reflect2) Follow these directions to obtain a genuineticket.xml file: Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First - Windows 10 Forums3) Turn on the WiFi using the button4) Do a clean-install of Win10 using media I had downloaded using this:  Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help5) Once Win10 was up and running, follow the same directions in the TenForums thread to install the xml file and activate Win10. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.----------------------------... I switched my laptop on one morning and the the wirelss light on the front, which is usually blue, stays orange as if it's switched off. My wireless internet now doesn't work and the broadcom driver has gone missing from device manager.

I've done a lot of research and the problem seems to be common, I just can't find a solution. I've have tried the following to no avail;

- Uninstall/reinstall wireless drivers
- Update BIOS/drivers
- System restore
- Memory diagnostic
- Unplug power and battery, then hold power button for 30 secs
The most obvious answer would be to say it's an internal problem and my wireless card is broke, however I find it hard to believe, how it can just stop working one morning. I keep my laptop on a cooling tray, so it can't be fried.

I can't afford to pay for any repairs and my warranty has run out, I'd be really grateful if someone could solve it. I can't cope without internet any longer lol.

If you require anymore details let me know, however I'm on a friends laptop and may be slow in replying, please bare with me.

Thank you.

There maybe a problem with the driver or indeed the switch

To test if switch you could download ubuntu www.ubuntu.com - download the ISO
right click on it and burn a bootable CD
now put the CD in the pc and boot off the CD
run ubuntu from the CD only - DO NOT install
see if wireless works

in device manager, right click on
Altheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter.
Now reboot the computer, then windows should find new hardware, let it find the driveron the PC, see if that resolves the issue

If not, you mat need to reinstall the latest driver from the HP site

Another solution may be the battery

Make sure the battery is above 25% charge
Now run the battery down, with the wireless switch OFF
Disconnect the battery from the machine
Reconnect the mains power
pressed for 30 seconds on the power button,- reboot the PC leave the battery OFF

Try re-seating the Ram. If that doesn't help remove the Cmos battery for a few minutes then put it back, it looks like a silver coin and should be visible near the ram.

I have tried dowdloading the drivers from the HP website but that does not work, I had also tried updating drivers through the computer management snapin.

If anyone could give me some insight on this it would be greatly appreciated.

You have to go to the manufacturer about this problem. Manufacturers with systems like that that have special programs and buttons, you have a low chance of finding a specific fix to a vendor-specific problem from a non-vendor-specific board.

Myself, I'd recommend a system restore to a prior restore point, one where you know your computer worked.

I have been fighting with these stupid HP dv6 & 9000, and v6000 Compaq model laptops for some time now. I've figured out how to bring the board back to life, but I have just not had much luck with the wireless orange light issue, until now.

I'm not sure if this fix is for everyone, obviously. However, if your wireless issue is hardware related and you know your wifi card is good; I suggest you try this method at least once and maybe save yourself a motherboard order.

What you need:
-Everest Ultimate, or any software that can stress your cpu
-That's it, this fix is all software controlled

What I did:
-Opened Everest
-Choose to stress CPU only with stability test in tools
-Covered vent in front of heatsink to inhibit heat transfer
-Waited till the CPU hit 75C, Wireless Works, and the Orange Light is now Blue again.

I hope this works for others. I know I have had about enough of these HP/Compaq Laptop MoBo problems.

-TechSpot is not responsible for any damage caused
-This fix has worked for 7 DV6000 & V6000 laptops
-Wireless may go back out after one or more system restarts, or never again go back out. If so, just repeat these steps; at your own risk.
-Length of stress test may be short and it may be 5 to 10 minutes... Read more

A:I fixed orange light HP/Compaq wireless problem

This sounds more like an internal power problem, from an ageing motherboard. Your findings and your "cure" may just be a coincidence. If you can bring the WiFi back to life even for a short time... this IS a good thing indeed .

A couple years ago, my laptop just decided to turn on airplane mode and not turn off. So I take it to my friend and he solved the internet problem but the orange light on the F12 button stays orange. This didn't cause any issues on windows from then on other than the annoying orange light. However I decided I wanted to try out linux and I cant even turn wireless on. I used the terminal on linux to see what was the problem and it said that my wireless LAN is "hard blocked". So there is some kind of hardware issue that is causing the problem. The wireless button is functional but always stays orange when it should be white. This is the same no matter what hard drive in in my pc because I wanted to see if it was something on my hard drive that was possibly causing the problem. I also have another issue, when I power up my pc, the power light on the button comes on along with the fans, then off, and then comes back on and boots normally. I forgot to mention in my last post that whenever windows tries to automatically initiate repair sequence, the wireless button turns blue and it works fine but as soon as I reboot the computer, the wireless button stays amber again and never turns on. I've downloaded the driver agent plus software and I'll run it on my computer to see if it resolves the issue, I only hope it is driver issue and that the software resolves it. I'll post a feedback on the result of the downloaded software soon. Thanks.

My pavilion dv7-1451nr only turns wireless keyboard blue when I reset the motherboard by removing the battery and press power button for seconds, after which I would plug the charger back to it while still leaving the battery out and press power button. After this, I would press f10 to enter bios setup, then I would load the default settings, save and exit.Having done all I explained above, the wireless button will turn blue and wireless assistant would be activated and indicates that wireless is on. If I check on the device manager, I would see the wireless hardware and driver details populated there and everything would be working fine but once I reboot the computer, the wireless button would refuse to turn on; it stays amber. If I try to check the status of the WLAN hardware and driver status on device manager, they would no longer be populated there anymore and wireless assistant would refuse to launch. If by any chance it launches, it would indicate that wireless is disabled by the device manager.I had tried to uninstall the wireless LAN driver and reinstalled it just in case the problem was coming from the software aspect but no solution. My laptop's (HP G7000 Notebook PC) wireless button isn't working. It has been, but now it's just red. I checked to see if there's any problem in Device Manager and of course it was. This is how it looks right now:

I've been trying to download and install the right drivers but somehow it's not working. Maybe I didn't find the correct ones. I even downloaded the program Astra32 to get as much details on the hardware I could but I'm lost.

How can I solve this?

Hello... I have this laptop from a friend that forgot the password. So went to find a program to crack and erase the password. All worked fine afterwards, so I started deleting the previous user settings, erasing the music, photos, and so on. Then all started to go haywire as suddenly there is no way I can download Firefox to use it instead of Explorer; then wanted to download several programs like "Auslogics Defrag", Super Anti Spyware and others, but when it gets to start downloading it happens nothing. There is a box that reads: "Unable to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later". There is an internet connection as I could go to the download.com site to try to download the programs I need. Trouble is that Windows found some viruses and said it fixed some of these partially, but I do need to download an anti virus program which was not available due that I deleted the Norton which ask for money, and replaced it with AVG, but then since I saw the computer not to work as usual, I restored it to an earlier time. I suspect this problem has something to do with me deleting the user settings...Any help will be appreciated.

Hmm.. since it's a pc from a friend and you want to make it yours I would suggest wiping it. It is new enough to have a recovery partition, this would be the easiest thing to do and it would solve your current issues. To get the the recovery option when you first turn the computer on tap the F8 button.. and select the "repair my computer" option.. and follow the prompts.. once you get the the menu with selections the bottom choice should be Hp or Compaq recovery manager .. Select the option and follow the prompts. Now if you don't have the partition, I would try making a new user account and deleting the old one.

Hi all,

Just recently have i been looking to upgrade my Compaq CQ56 laptop. After running crucial memory scanner I've found i can upgrade from 2GB of ram to 8GB quite easily. I was also considering upgrading to a 64GB SDD, but I don't know if my laptop has a spare Sata port. I'm probably guessing its quite rare, but i can only ask.

Also how can I transfer Windows 7 across onto the SDD, whilst leaving documents and other files on my current HDD?

Hi: Unfortunately, your model will not support 2 x 4 GB of memory. That is because with an Intel Celeron processor, your notebook has the Mobile Intel GL-40 chipset. That chipset only supports a max of 2 x 2 GB of memory. http://ark.intel.com/products/35501/Intel-82GL40-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller-Hub Besides...2 x 4 GB of DDR2 memory would cost a lot of money.  This was the cheapest I could find. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145599

If you are lucky the original recovery partition is still intact see the tutorial here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867418 If the HP recovery does not work you would have to get your hands on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM disk or a copy of the HP restore disk set for your computer. HP no longer offers it but you can perhaps get it from 3rd party vendors. www.computersurgeons.com www.restoredisks.com What upgrades had you thought about doing?

Nevermind! After reading a bit futher information on product manufactures sites and HP site I found all the answers. The motherboard does support the AMD Phenom II N660 Dual-Core Mobile (HMN660DCR23GM) and has been tested and benchmarked. The HP F.18, 4.07M  05/03/2011 BIOS update will be fine as far as I can tell from reading. The Broadcom Mini PCIe card BCM4313 802.11n with Bluetooth is supported on the motherboard and the drivers are listed on my product page. Sooo, wish me luck!!

Hi, There are few older BIOS versions on the following link         http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/Compaq-Presario-CQ56-Notebook-PC-series/4247498/mode... Please download them and try from F.05 first. Note: all BIOS versions are for Windows 7 only. You should upgrade BIOS before upgrade Windows from 7 to 10, not another way around. Regards.

I have a COMPAQ CQ56 Notebook computer.  I have upgraded the CPU with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 chip (Socket P).  I would like to upgrade the CPU to a higher capacity chip.  For example, I am looking at the Core 2 Duo T9500 and the Core 2 Duo T9600.  Please reply with options for upgrade - especially your own successful personal experience.   Thank you in advance.

Hopefully I posted in the right section. But anyways I will be as detailed as possible. Currently I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 115dx running Wins7 out of factory. One day I was using my computer perfectly fine, everything normal and running great. I decide to close the lid to put it to sleep.

I come back later to find that it didn't actually sleep and was just stuck there. This has happened before and I would just turn off the computer and it would be fine. But recently I did and it is now stuck at bootup. The caps locks blinks 1 time, which corresponds to CPU not functioning I believe. I reseated harddrive and ram, didn't do much.

Then randomly as I am trying to get it to boot by turning it on and off, waited a few and it booted up normally. Perfect. Then I decided to shut it down instead of putting it to sleep just to find later when trying to get on, its back to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated on how to prevent this without any major repair work.

As the title states, I have a cq56-219wm. The LED code leads me to believe that the cpu has died. However, I have already replaced it with a new one and still am getting the same code with no boot up. I have tried the power reset by holding the power button for one minute and still nothing. The fans are functional as well. My question is, what would the next step be for this laptop repair and will it be worth it on a 2 year old machine? Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM No Boot

Unless you can find something not connected back correctly (few will repair a laptop's hardware due to fragility) then I'd RMA the CPU to try another one. If the LED blinking code is consistent they should take it as proof it is not working and replace it.

Most new hardware has a year's tech support so you might even get them to help you go over it in advance of an RMA, which is the best way to set one up anyway.

good day all,
for christmas yesterday i recieved a replacement laptop as a gift it is a compaq presario cq56 and it works great my only problem is that my media player key on my left side of my keyboard runs cyberdvd player, i removed this and installed vlc as i prefer that for my media viewing and now i am unable to run my media player through the keyboard shortcuts.
i have set file associations inside vlc
i have tried to set vlc as my default program using the default programs and features menu but couldnt find vlc player only options were current, windows media centre and windows media player, selecting either of the windows options and clicking on ok resulted in the option being reset to my current one
i cant seem to find a program installed on the machine that allows me to customize my keyboard shortcuts but the laptop was preowned but reconditioned, i have searched for a program but i can not find one for my opearating system (windows 7 home preimum)
there isnt a option to configure the shortcuts in the keyboard section of control panel
and as a last resort i tried to change the fill association that is in the registry location relating to the appkey (the value is 16 and the default file association was .CDA i changed this to .mp3 hoping that that would allow me to load vlc player as default but it didnt work)
i attempted to set the vlc media player shortcut on the desktop to the media key but it wouldnt allow it, windows refused to change the box from non... Read more

See this HP thread. You want to change the registry key shown to the path for VLC.
Cyberlink PowerDVD/Mediasmart Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\MobilePc\HotStartButtons\2  "Application" = "C:\Program File(x86)\Cyberlink\PowerDVD9\PowerDVD9.exe"; Change the string value "C:\Program File(x86)\Cyberlink\PowerDVD9\PowerDVD9.exe"

I have a nearly 2 year old Compaq CQ56 laptop that has just quit working. I had been on for awhile, put the laptop down, did some errands without turning off the laptop. When I did come back to it the screen was black (as is usual) but wiggling mouse of tapping enter did not bring the screen up. I tried to start several times then took it to my neighbor to look at. He is a cash register programer and is decent with Windows. He hooked the laptop to an old monitor and it did nothing. Next he took the battery out, waited a few minutes, put battery back and voila... working laotop! I was estatic! It worked fine the rest of the night but when I tried to boot today it had the black screen again. Googled "CQ56 has black screen, doesn't boot, flashing cap lock" and found some repair tips. Did a "hard start" removed and changed around memory sticks, still no laptop. Found a "BIOS reset" tip here and tried that. Still nothing... and I really need this thing to work.
Screen has NO activity, on/off button lights, cap lock button blinks on - off... no pattern, Lan button comes on. I can hear a whirring sound like it is booting and you can hear a soft running noise so something is coming on. I have no idea what is going on. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

Hey Techspotters.

I recently acquired a new Compaq Presario CQ56-101SA notebook with a 2 year warranty. Problem is after two weeks the display appeared with vertical and horizontal white lines and in the top left hand corner a bright white and blue 'blobbed' image appeared and has gotten bigger from top left heading to bottom right. I immediately informed Compaq/HP who arranged to have my laptop collected and sent for repair under warranty. I subsequently received a call from HP Engineering Dept that the LCD screen had been cracked inside (there is no physical external damage) due to undue pressure or 'knock' to the screen and that it was deemed as accidental damage and not covered under warranty! Now I can categorically say that to my knowledge, nothing untoward has happened to this laptop (it is 2 weeks old!!). I open it and then I close it and it has had normal use for the 2 weeks that i have had it. HP wanted £199 to fix it or alternatively return it free of charge unfixed. No amount of persuasive talk from me would change her mind so I opted to have the notebook returned to me. Now I could fix this as a new LCD screen is relatively cheap to purchase (£50-£70 online) but I fear that if I do this, it will invalidate my 2 year warranty.

Has anyone else had any similar issues with Compaq and HP notebooks or have I just been extremely unlucky here and suffered a 'night gremlin notebook attack'.

I would very much appreciate advice on w... Read more

A:Compaq CQ56 101SA notebook cracked LCD internally

I've had to install a new lcd screen in a toshiba about 3 years ago. I was very careful to not leave striped screws or scratched paint near any of the screw holes. a year later my hdd died and my laptop was still under warranty( extended which i purchased) and they installed a new hdd.

That was a few years ago and a different company. I'm not sure about other experiences, but in mine I believe since I didn't visibly damage anything they couldn't have known if I opened it or not at any time.
