Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Q: Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

Preferred Solution: Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

thanks

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wi-fi
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)
I'd really appreciate any troubleshooting suggestions. End result: When I click a computer to ... Read more

Hi,

Recently had a virus on my computer. Had to take it to the geek squad to get it fixed. Brought it home the other day and it would not connect to my wireless network (I am on the other laptop in my house that does still connect). It would connect before I got it "fixed". I brought it back to the store the next day and they tried a few things. I will connect to their wireless in the store.

I originally had Geek Squad come out earlier this year to set up my wireless router and the guy who helped me at the store said it might be because of a certain way he set my computer up to connect to the router which got erased when my computer had to be restored.

Now they want to charge me an extra $89 for them to come back out to the house and fix it.

Is there anything I can do to try to fix this myself without forking over even more money?

A:Comp just restored, network will not assign network address to comp

uh, maybe you would want to check what is the setting looks like now and post it here? maybe someone can help you out. also if possible, mention what brand?

Computer A: Windows XP Home Edition
Has the Cable modem connected to it
Has the router connected to it
512mb ram

Computer B: Windows 98SE
Being Wirelessly connected to the xp computer

Ok well i know i have my network set up because a) i went through the XP computer, and The 98SE computer is getting an internet connection and finally C) because the XP can connect to the 98SE but not visa versa

Now every time im on the 98SE computer and i try to connect to the XP comp i get this "Resource: \\MAIN\IPC$" Then its askin for a password, ive tried every single password ive known it wotn connect, i have even made an account exactly the same as the 98SE computer on the XP computer. IE (this is true) The windows 98SE computer has a username of Default and password - nothing. So i went to the XP connection, i made an account named Default and in the password field put nothing. I dont know what else to do ive tried everything plz help soon!!!

A:problem connecting 98SE comp to Xp comp but not visa versa

On the XP machine:
1) Is the firewall turned off? If you have SP2 it is turned on by default.

This particular computer is straight from the factory, and has been working just fine for months. Now, all of a sudden, I can't read two different network paths. The error above keeps coming up, no matter what I do.

The computers I'm trying to connect to haven't changed. They're both running Windows 7 as well. I was trying to remember how to delete stored passwords for networking, but all I could find on google was to run control keymgr.dll ... This brings up the credential manager, but there's NOTHING in there at all.

I am totally stumped as to what the problem could be. I'm not having it on any other computer in the network. Any ideas, other than seeing if PCs can fly??

A:Windows cannot access \\COMP 0x80070035 The network path was not found

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Any Firewall or Security Software installed? Disable it for now and see if it helps.

Also, you may try this: \\ComputerIPAddress\SharedDrive or folder to access the computer.

Also, assign the same User Name and Password on both computers.

Hello, i am new here on the forum. Im looking for any gentle help i can get here from you guys who might be able to figure out my problem.
For some time ago (around 1 month) ive been having problems with my internet from time to time which include a really slow responding or sending into the internet. It is so that sometimes my ping goes up above 200ms and stays there for a quite some time (maybe an hour or more). I check my ping using cmd and typing "ping ping.sunet.se". I can also feel that the delay is huge when playing online games, so there is deffenitly something wrong with the sending and responding. Also when i check my connection in mb/s using some homepages that calculates it, like "bredbandskollen.se" (a swedish page). And here i see that the mb/s speed is prefectly fine (around 7mb/s recieving and 0.4-0.1mb/s sending). Not sure if the sending speed is accepting thou. And when my internet is busy, like when i am streaming something or things like that, my responding speed gets a bit better like 150ms, thou when my internet is doing fine and works as it should i usually stay around 20ms ^^ so something must be wrong.
Now i woundering what might cause my internet troubeling. Any thoughts would be great, thanks!

I'm currently running a WBR2-G54 Cable Router from Buffalo tech. I have 1 computer hard wired (self made cat 5 cables), 1 wireless. Now there is one more comp that I wanna put on the network (hard wired). Its an older P3 HP. I created the cat 5 cable, and connected up the HP (WinXp Pro SP1). No lights turned on on the NIC. So I reinstalled tcp/ip, reinstalled the NIC, the drivers, resetted to different slots, tried a different NIC that I know works, reseting everytime the cable modem and router. So then I tested the cat 5 cable on a diff computer (Laptop SP2 WinXP home) the one that used to be wireless. So now the laptop is hard wire connected and got me on the internet. Then after about a minute there was no more internet. Just a message at the bottom of the screen that read "limited or no connectivity". I did a googles groups search and found out it was a new cool feature of Microsoft's Sp2 and so I quickly disabled the option for it to notify me of a Limited or no connectivity error, this did not resolve my problem as microsoft said it would. I updated my router firmware, reset, hard reset my router/cable modem.

I know what that limited or no connectivity error problem is, it states that my DHCP server from the router isnt able to give me an IP so windows just gives me some 168.***.***.*** and an IP and tells me that anyone on this gateway will be able to network up with me or vis versa. This is kinda bogus because my other computer (with sp2 also but ... Read more

Ok, first off, thx for any help that you guys suggest!

Symptoms: My comp is a 3500+ with a 6800Gt and 1gig Ram. Given that, everything seems very very laggy. I try to open a simple folder it takes a min to open. I try to start msn messenger and my whole comp freezes for 30 while it try to perform that action.

My Comcast provided was at my house setting things up. He needed to access a website and even he noticed/said that i might have a worm/spyware problem.

Every single webpage take 30 sec if not more to load. More if there are pics and gif files. I have Comcast High Speed internet. So it shouldn't be doing this! Also, if i try to go gmail.google.com --- i get there, but when i try putting in a SN and password the page freezes and i can't even "END PROCESS." I have to restart my comp or just continue with a frozen IE page...

I've tried/scanned with: Norton Cororate Edition, SpyBot, SpyDoctor, Microsoft Spyware beta 1, AdAware SE.
Norton found nothing, all the others found some spyware stuff, deleted or quarentined them, but did not fix my problem.
I did go into "SAFE MODE" to do these scans prior to getting the LOG.

SRY that was sooooo long. Hope you can help! Thank you once again!

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

XP Home
Vista Home Premium
New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

Current security is Trend Micro PCcillin 2006 (updated daily)
I also run adware 2007, Ccleaner, Auslogics disk defrag, Registery fix,

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. I have a 32bit comp, W7 Ult, 1TB HD and I would like to clone that onto a comp that is a 64bit. HD is the same capacity, question is, can this process be done? Will the programs from the 32bit work in the 64bit comp.? I'm thinking of using Acronis True Image Home 2011.I was given a newer desktop minus the HD and was going to retire my old desktop and I wanted what was on the old comp(32bit) transfered to the new (64bit) tower. Thanx in advance for any advice.

A:Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

A:Upgraded comp but now comp keeps restarting

First you need to turn off automatic restart. Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced System settings, Start Up and Recovery, settings and un-check automatically restart

Alright, I'm clueless to Networking pretty much.

I have recently set up a linksys wrt54g router to my desktop with a wireless signal to my laptop.

My question is, is there a way/how do I share files between the two computers. What do I do to set this up (if it's possible), and what other equipment might I need.

I'm pretty much networking illertiate so go easy on me.

Thanks.

If using XP . . run the "Set up a home or small office network" wizard from "My Network Places on each machine . . tell it you want to share files . . then set the folders you want to share to share on the network ( right click . . select Properties . . Sharing tab )

I was looking for a better option than transferring to USB then transferring to other computer. Is there a way to do this?

A:transfer data from comp to comp

to just transfer 'files and folders'--use a crossover cable (under $10)--see think link with instructions:

Okay so i don't know if i am just noticing this but I have windows 7 and when I opened a folder on the left side is like the list that says computer, libraries, favorites, and networks. So i happened to click on networks and saw my own comp name and then also another called gumbo-pc. when i click on it, it asks for user name and pass to connect to that comp. It also lists the media devices of that other comp and mine. What does this mean? I don't know why the other comp is here. There are other comps in my house but ive never seen this before and never connected with another other computers. I hope I make sense. I guess what I am asking is, does this just mean another comp is on the same internet as me or that they are connect to my comp and have access to my files?
Also, sorry if this makes me look stupid. I am just worried. Thanks.

To turn on Remote Access, go to:

Start
Right click: Computer
Properties
Click: Remote Settings
Check: Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer

If Remote Access isn't built into your Vista Home Premium, if you're brave, you can reset your registry and add it into your system: Enable Remote Desktop Connection for Vista Home Premium:

Enable Remote Desktop Connection For Vista Home Premium - WGSWiki

OR there are some third party programs you can use, like:

I just bought a new computer, and set everything up and the computer is not recognizing the internet connection. When I go to setup an internet connection it tells me to connect to a broadband connection and requires a username and password. The computer is the only one in the house, and is plugged directly into the modem from Time Warner. I have never set up a username or password through my ISP.

When my computer tries to find the broadband connection it says it is connectiong through the WAN miniport. I have bought a new ethernet cord and still no connection. The modem is lit up all the way until PC/Activity and Standby have no lights on. So I assume there is no connection between the modem and PC. I have walked through Dell troubleshooting and they ran diagnostics that told me the network card is ok because we did an ipconfig and a "ping localhost" and it sent and received.

Dell is going to send a tech to the house to replace my motherboard but I figured I would try posting here just in case someone knows a quick fix. I even installed my old network card to the new computer and still no luck.

Please help.

A:New Comp no Internet access

Do you have red or yellow flags in the Device Manager? (Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager)
Have you attempted to reinstall your drivers, despite what Dell says?
The IP Config shows the problem is elsewhere. Have you talked to Time Warner tech support?
You can test by intalling a PCI ethernet card and driver. If that works, it is your board.

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but whatev

I just recently got a new computer installed with the Vista Home Premium x64 OS. After many failed attempts at transferring my old files i eventually ended up putting my old hard drive into my new computer, and attempted to drag and drop into a folder i created specifically for those files.

Upon trying to do this, it transferred all of my program files, but when it gets to my actual documents, where i keep my most important files, it says i need administrative permission to do this.

Then, when i tried to access the files directly in my old hard drive, it said that i couldn't do that, and showed this:

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to get access to this folder."

"You have been denied permision to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab."

and then when i use the security tab to transfer file permission to me, it still doesn't do anything.

any help please?

When you are going to "open" up the folder that is on your old HDD. Right click on it and click "Run as administrator." This should allow you full access to the files and able to transfer them without any problems.

I am having a odd problem with one of the two brand new vostro desktops running windows 7 home. On the problem comp (which I will name as compProblem), it is only able to see 3 out of the 10 devices on the network. The 3 it does see are always the same, all of which are running vista.

The devices it cannot see are:

the other new vostro (windows 7)
2 xp machines

Both vostros are supposedly identical and are attached to the network via the same switch. Only compProblem though is experiencing this issue.

Here is what I have tried so far:

verified everything is on the same workgroup
verified sharing is on
verified compProblem can ping every device it can't see (both by IP and comp name.... ie \\bpi-drive)
'net view' only returns 'there are no entries in the list', but 'net view \\bpi-drive' works properly
I have run lanscan, but it does nothing since 'net view' returns nothing.
