"Page Cannot Be Displayed...Cannot Find Server or DNS Error"

Q: "Page Cannot Be Displayed...Cannot Find Server or DNS Error"

Getting the cannot display DNS error message at any website I try to get to. It appears that my connection is open because I use a router and my laptop works fine. Other programs (p2p stuff, virus updater, etc) that require net access also will not work. Not sure if this is an issue that can be helped with HijackThis, but the problem seemed to start happening after I used Ad-Aware for the first time in a long time, so I'm thinking spyware may be involved. If not any advice as to what the prob may be would be great, thanks in advance for any help! System specs are

Preferred Solution: "Page Cannot Be Displayed...Cannot Find Server or DNS Error"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: "Page Cannot Be Displayed...Cannot Find Server or DNS Error"

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ).

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner.
* Click on 'Complete System Scan' and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose 'Remove', then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named 'Save report'.
* Click 'Save report'.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = local.,
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D714A94F-123A-45CC-8F03-040BCAF82AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\SbCIe02a.dll

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

regsvr32 /u occache.dll
attrib -r -s -h "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\"
rmdir "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\"
regsvr32 occache.dll
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it to run it.

Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

See if that fixes the internet connection problem. If not, try this out:

Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double click on WinsockFix.exe to run it.

Hi, everyone. Just found this website, and it looks like it will hopefully be helpful. Here's my problem:

I am unable to access a specific website: www.edline.net. I receive an error message stating that this page cannot be displaye (as if the site doesn't exist). However, on other computers, the page appears fine.

I have Norton Internet Security installed w/parental controls (haven't gotten a chance to try turning them off; don't know if this could be the problem). I'm thinking that maybe the oversensative parental controls are blocking the site, but can anyone think of what else could be causing this problem?

I only get the message when I go to www.edline.com. Other websites work fine.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

-Micky

Hey There,

Was just hoping someone knows wtf is going on here-

Some .chm files, when I try to read them with the default winXP .chm viewer, display the standard Internet Explorer "The page cannot be displayed" error page in the viewing pane. The table of contents is visible, however, just not the page data.

Now, if I copy the same .chm file to my desktop, it opens fine!

This only happens with some of my .chm files, although it is always the same ones- and they always work when I copy them to the desktop, just not when they are in the folders I keep them in.

The data is there, it just can't be accessed for some reason (if I use a .chm 'decoder' to decode the .chm files to .htm format, they work fine; however I don't want to have to mess with a hundred different .htm files just to read a book)

BTW, I have tried changing the filenames with no avail.

If anyone has solved this problem or has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.

Okay, I'll try to explain this as best I can as I'm posting this for my husband. He is on a business trip in SE Asia (India, Korea, Taiwan) and while in India he picked up a virus. It's been cleared but he continues to have this problem with IE7...
He's able to open it and do a little reading or get his email, but after about 5 minutes he only gets the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error and is unable to open any new tabs or windows, no links work, etc. (he then has to reboot to get it back). He's cleared files (history, cookies, temp files, etc.) using Internet Options and Explore, disabled add-ons, enabled & disabled pop-ups, etc., all to no avail. He's even tried using it in safe mode but the same problems occur. He was able to download HJT which got rid of hggff.dll (Vundo?). He said he would try to email the hjt.log file tomorrow morning (tonight EST) and I will post it, if this will help to decipher the problem. Meanwhile, if anyone has a suggestion of what else to try I (and he) would greatly appreciate it!
He is using a Dell D610 laptop running XP-Pro on a VPN (required to get his emails from work).

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me. My computer was recently hit with a bunch of Spyware. I've been removing it with Spybot, Webroot's Spyware, and Lavasoft. I think there still might be some stuff on it...but in the meantime, I noticed that I am not able to access many sites through links. I get the "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message. I know this is NOT a connection problem, because I am able to access some sites...it usually occurs after i put in the web address and then try to click on a link within the site...then it will not open the page and I get this error. All I know is that this was not happening prior to getting all the Spyware on my computer...so think it happened as a result of that.

Does anyone have any suggestions / advice as to what may have gotten changed and how to correct it so I can access links ?

Thank You !

Thank You !

A:The Page Cannot Be Displayed and Cannot Find Server or DNS Error

Okay, you've described a connection error wether you think it's spyware based or not, it will stem from your network/connection due to your spyware problems... i assume you used the "immunize" function of Spybot? this modifies your hosts file and can give you problems with certain sites(to protect your pc)... what sites does this happen with?
The functionality of a site will not be modified by spyware unless it's extreemly sofisticated then it would happen to all of your links not just one or two... it's a connection error...

Okay my main advice is go to the hijackthis log help sub-forum and read the instructions on getting help with spyware and then run hijackthis and post the log and i'm sure you'll get help.. it may be a well known thing, or it may not be a problem due to spyware...

Hope you get it sorted,
Jamey

Hello, I have an odd problem. I use to be be able to visit a few sites but about a month ago a few of then started reciving the error The page cannot be displayed - Cannot find server or DNS Error. After some reseach some suggested that it might have been spyware that had messed IE up, so Iopened Firefox and tried. it came up with it just returns a blank white page.

I reformatted my computer and reinstalled windws but the pages still dont display.

Ive pinged the site and it responds in cmd but when i try http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX it comes back witht he same error.

Ive tried accessing it via my work laptop which runs vista business, and it works there.

Not sure why my home pc doest work.

ANy suggestioons would be great.

Are you using DSL connection? and what is the make/model of the modem/router you're using?

Try going to..

start > run > type 'cmd' > type 'ipconfig' then paste the result here.

try also pinging a website and it's IP address then post the result here as well.

Ok day 2 of this problem, march 21st i was on a web site where i download music from. I had no issues as always. March 22nd i buy a new graphics card (radeon 9000 Pro) install software, etc. I've no idea if this is causing the problem, but now when i goto the same web site i get the (Page cannot be displayed...bunch of help tips which i did) then at bottom is says Cannont find server or DNS error.

To see if it wasnt just the website, i went to 3 other web sites that have music and video downloads. Same thing was happening whenever i try to d/l or stream a song/video. BUT in sokme cases on the same websites i was able to successfully d/l(stream) a song/video. Cox cable(my interent supplier) has no clue whats wrong, all they told me is to reset all the default settings in the internet options. If that didnt work then it was the website having issues.

Ive had no issues connecting to any websites other then when i actually try to d/l a file.

I am using IE6.0 on windows XP

Any help appreciated

I first posted this to Microsoft Newsgroup for IE 6.0 but have received NO
solution. Then I placed it in the XP newsgroup in hopes of finding additional information.....NO LUCK there, either. If anyone has ANY SUGGESTIONS, please advise.
I've checked all the settings (dial-up, Internet Properties, modem) I can think of to see if there is something set incorrectly...now I'm not sure WHAT is supposed to be the proper settings but NO page will load regardless of the site. I emptied temp files, cookies, did system restore, and the connection IS
established. Also, used other sites besides MSN for the home page
and receive the same message. Uninstalled/reinstalled dial-up connection....still "page cannot be displayed" error appears. At a total loss what to try next. Any/all help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Try:
Tools > Internet Options > Programs > Reset Web Settings

If that doesn't fix it we need more information. Try this:

Start > Run > type "cmd" > Ok

type "nslookup www.google.com" Does this return an IP address for the site?

type "ping 129.21.3.3" Does it say the request timed out?

I have been experiencing the "page can't be displayed" when clicking on some links in IE 11 or sometimes I get the error message within a page. This happens only in IE, not in Firefox. I received an email newsletter and when I move my mouse over the link, at the bottom of the page it shows the link as:

http://goo.gl/5P4EZo

If I set IE as my default browser and click the link it fails to expand and bring up the web page. In the web address bar, it shows the above link. However, if I set Firefox as my default browser and I click on the link, it goes through and brings up the page and has the follow address:

http://www.scottevest.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=sev&Category_Code=sev_collection_sale&utm_campaign=kim_komando_0 7_25_14

I suspect the link is a shorted substitute link like "tiny url" or similar using Google. What is preventing IE from going to the web site like Firefox does?

A:Error in IE 11 - "This page can't be displayed"

Hi,
The shortened link opened this page without delay ?

Code:
http://www.scottevest.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=sev&Category_Code=sev_collection_sale&utm_campaign=kim_komando_07_25_14

Uncheck the top box and click on Delete,
Close ie and re-open and test,
Cheers.

Hi i am in need of urgent assistance with Internet Explorer. When i went on to my lap top i it told me that i had spyware and needed a program in order to detect and remove it. I didn't have a spyware program on my lap top at the time so i did a search in Google for "spyware remover". When i did this i went to this link:
http://www.spywareguide.com/txt_onlinescan.html
That site has an online spyware scan that's supposed to detect and remove spyware. I did this scan on my lap top and it told me that i needed to delete certain files that contained spyware. So, naturally i agreed for the program off that site to do it for me. However, ever since i did this every website i go to on Internet Explorer comes up with the message "Page cannot be displayed"(i am currently using another machine). When i open my web browser, at the bottom it has a link to the file SHDOCLC.DLL so i have a feeling that this file is corrupt which is causing webpages to not come up. If ANYONE can help me with this problem it would be much appreciated. I hope someone out there has read all that and can help me! Thanks heaps.

A:"Page cannot be displayed" Error

Hi mickol25,

had a quick google search about the file you refer to here, have a read, I don't think however that is your only problem. Have you got HijackThis? If not, download from the link I'll leave at the bottom and save it into it's own directory on your C:\ (hard disk) drive because you'll need to save some log files on it. Read the help file with it and run a scan and post your log back on here where someone will evaluate it and give you advice. After you have run the scan do NOT 'fix' anything, just save the log and post it. You will have to run another later and fix the problems.
HijackThis
Good luck

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Have been using this computer for about 5 years now, it's a Dell Latitude D810, and I'm running Windows XP with service pack 3. Recently I moved to a new location, but I still connect wirelessly to my family's router. Since I moved, though, I began having trouble accessing patch servers for various MMO games I play, Maple Story and NeoSteam for example. I discovered that Internet Explorer is required for the patching connections, so I tried to go online with Explorer instead of Firefox, but the homepage could not be displayed, and showed a "Cannot find server or DNS error." I tried going to other sites, with equal unsuccess, and am completely unable to use Explorer at all.

I've tried flushing/refreshing the DNS several times, didn't help.

I've tried setting the preferred connection to 4.2.2.2 in Network Connections, didn't help.

I've disabled all of my firewalls, and tried stopping the processes for the windows default firewall before doing anything.

I've done the "fixit" program on the Explorer site.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

Hi,

Six of my customers have reported "cannot find server" error pages when they tried to login to their account on my site.

It appears to be a strange error, and I am not sure who is actually to blame, so I have sent similar messages to other technical help forums. However, it may be a new browser specific problem, hence this post.

I use Miva Merchant 4.0 (engine v3.9201) for the shopping cart facility.

As I wrote, customers using MSIE 6.0 have reported that they are unable to login because they get a "Cannot Find Server" error when they click on the "Please log-in" or "account" link in my store front page. I checked their reports, and with the exception of Mozilla Firefox (which I use), all other browsers: MSIE, Opera, and Netscape, gave similar "cannot find server" or "cannot connect to remote server" messages when I tried the log-in link.

When browsing the rest of my site, the browsers works fine, but when anyone tries to log-in or goes to the check-out to pay for their purchase, they get the error I mentioned.

The "account" or "Please log-in" links are on this page:

http://www.moza.co.uk/cgi-bin/miva.c...t2/merchant.mv

and when they click on it, they are given a session id like this:

Just wondering.....
Very frequently when I'm moving around online I will get the classic page reading "The page cannot be displayed" bla bla bla.....
Sometimes when searching for a site I know exists.
Sometimes after I have inputed some info on an online form & submit it.
Moving from one page to the next in both large & small web sites.
Not a big deal most of the time but it bugs me!
Does anybody out there have any ideas how to prevent this without lowering my protection level too far?
I'm currently using the following (w/ XP&SP2 using IE) & probably more....

SpyGuard
Winpatrol

etc. etc.

On a side note this forum is amazing.
I have only posted a few times but reading what is going on is really helpfull.

I've been having a problem for several months with my browser(s) and hoping someone here might be able to help.

I use both Internet Explorer and Firefox, so I've decided this isn't a browser problem. About half the time I click on links-- either from inside the browser, whether I am opening in a new window or not, from an e-mail program or chat program-- I get the "Page cannot be displayed" error. However, when I click Refresh, the page will suddenly load just fine. Usually I have to click Refresh more than once, sometimes five or six times before the page actually loads. I have no idea why it's happening and I can't seem to narrow the possibilities.

Does anyone know why this would be happening?

I'm using Windows XP, if that's of any relevance.

I apologize if anyone has already asked these questions, I'm having such issues with the internet right now I can't check to see if they have been asked. Plus everytime I come here I can't seem to find out how to just log in and post my question.
I'm running Windows XP with the newest version of IE. I have a dial-up connection, and while I am aware of just how slow this is, something has to be wrong otherwise. It hangs everywhere I go - no matter what site I visit I wait and wait and wait for it to connect. The little flag in the corner barely flaps. Most of the time I get "The Page Cannot be Displayed" - so I then refresh only to get half the page with some of the buttons not filled in, or it just boots me off the internet altogether. I've called my ISP who says they've done everything on their end they can and that the problem must be my computer. My call manager (the program that shows me who's calling) won't work, once it's connected it gives me a pop error about a socket connection error and this pop up comes up continuously - once I click ok, it comes back up over and over and over.. so much that I have to disable it.
I'm at the end of my rope for how to fix these issues. It's slower than slow. As a matter of fact I've spent the last 90 minutes trying to get to the Tech Support site and had to type this in notepad first because I was getting frustrated waiting and waiting for the site to come up. My Issue: for some reason IE is not allowing me to sign in to pages that require a username or password. Pages that start with HTTPS also do not display. The following error message is displayed. "This page cannot be displayed." I've tried so many things I'm about to give up! Below are some detials about my laptop and some of the steps I've taken to mitigate this problem. Someone please help!!

Specs: Laptop Manu. Toshiba, Satellite series
XP Home Edition, SP 2, IE6.

I've tried the following:

Make sure I have an internet connection by pinging the DNS server
followed most of the tips found here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303807
Install another browser Mozilla Firefox...this also displays page not available message.
I've also updated my Internet Options to Default, I am not going thru a Proxy server, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 are selected
completed a system restore to an earler moment in time...did not work

I've even did a system scan to detect if some of the files were corrupt everything seems fine. The only optin I haven't tried is reinstalling XP. If anyone could provdie any advice before i take this step I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks,
Rabia17

After upgrade user's cannot open html attachment in email in outlook 2010 the IE 11 browser gives an error: "This Page can't be displayed"

Note: Turn on Enhanced Protected Mode for IE is enabled and this setting has served us well in Windows 7

Any thoughts / guidance on the issue would be appreciated.

I've been having malware issues lately, and have performed numerous scans with different programs:

MalwareBytes (removed several threats)
Avira Antivir (found nothing)
Ad-aware (bad cookies)
Safety.live.com - found items but couldn't fix it

The popups (more like new tabs, as I had the popup blocker enabled) have stopped, and it seems to be running better, but the weird thing is I can't access Windows Updates. It just says "This page cannot be displayed".

Also, the yellow shield in the system tray shows up when you first boot up, but then it goes away, as if a program/registry entry has not loaded yet when that icon first loads, but then kicks it out when it does load up.

We did some searches, and found that we should just run HiJackThis and post the log for you smart guys to analyze.

So, here it is.

Thanks!

I have seacrhed the web and foud lots of the same answers by running different command lines, which I did but it still does not work. Other computers on my network work fine..wired and wireless. I have reset the broswer settings, un-installed IE back to IE6 and still nothing. Re-installed IE7..nothing. winsock fix- nothing. Firewalls turned off-Nothing. I have ran HiJack, Spy-Bot, Grissoft Anti-Virus, HomeTrend online Virus checker- Nothing.

PS..Now Windows update will not update??

Any suggestions? I really don't want to re-load XP if possible. :)

Thanks

Help! The internet explorer on my laptop suddenly stopped working. It now shows "cannot find server" when you open IE on its own, and only works when I have AOL running.

I have tried deleting and reinstalling IE and I got nothing.

I have 2 pc's and a playstation connected to a linksys NR041 router. Everything was working fine until one of the pc's was infected with a virus. I used several utilities to remove the virus but now when I try to access the internet I get the"Cannot find server or DNS error" I bypassed the router and went straight to the cable modem and the same thing. The pc is not being assigned an IP address, it says IP invalid. Do I have a bad nic?

I'm getting in touch for my sister who is experiencing the cannot find server error when trying to get online.

What are the most likely fixes for this.

Thanks!

Sounds like her ISP may be down.
Check to see if you can get to her ISP's web site and find out or have her call her ISP.

I'm hoping someone can help me with a multi-stage problem that I'm having with Internet Explorer:

Firstly I cannot visit any websites via IE, I consistently get a DNS error even when trying to go to Windows update.

I have no problems browsing sites on Mozilla so the problem is IE / Windows specific and I have tried everything i can think of to solve the problem.

here is my Hijack This log currently:

Hi Guys,

I let my mate borrow my server yesterday, and I got the internet up and running for him fine, He's installed a few programs since then. They include:

Adobe Photoshop
Winrar
MSN Live Messenger

and he left the computer on over night and restarted it this morning, and the default gateway has disspaeared and all he seems to get when going onto internet explorer is a "Page can not be displayed" error message.

I tried having a look at it, going in to Start > run > cmd > ipconfig

and it showed his IP and subnet mask, but the default gateway did not appear.

I couldn't figure out how to get it back.
Can you guys help at all ??

Thanks in advance
Lewis Sellers
