Solved: Microsoft Office Outlook vs Outlook Express?

Q: Solved: Microsoft Office Outlook vs Outlook Express?

My friend just had her computer reformatted after a bad virus contamination. It is still running EXTREMELY slow but has at least been running correctly. She is running XP

Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2003 for her with Microsoft Outlook and now her email doesn't seem to be working. She uses Outlook Express as her mail default rather than Office Outlook but keeps getting the error message that it can't find the POP3.

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

I hope this all makes sense.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

thx

Hi,
Recently I have noticed my Dell Vostro laptop has been very slow in booting to a point where I can actually do something with any speed.

I had been reading various forums regarding the problem and the general consensus was that removing unnecessary start-up programs would assist. This I did, and included in it was the removal of Outlook Express as a start-up as I never use it.

I was rather startled to find that the next time I started up Outlook I get the message indicated in the title. When acknowledging the message, Outlook still opens and functions correctly as far as I can see, but this message always coming up is getting a little tedious.

Why would a company require the lesser of two programs to be loaded and started in order that their more powerful program should work? Amazing thought processes at MS.

I have seen answers for this question elsewhere and I have tried their solutions but to no avail. That includes setting IsInstalled in registry key 881dd1c5-3dcf-431b-b061-f3f88e8be88a to a Dword value of 1.

What I have found, is the key {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} and {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} in registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\AutorunsDisabled. As the first refers to Outlook Express 6 and the other to Address Book 6 I assume that this may have something to do with my problem.

If they are the problem, is there a way of moving these keys out of AutorunsDisable and back into Instal... Read more

In Win7x64, Google email in the form of HTML source becomes mangled in Office Outlook (which I've substituted for incompatible Outlook Express).

To replace Outlook Express, I first tried Thunderbird, and then Eudora. Only Office Outlook, which is part of MS Office, had all the functions and options of Outlook Express that I like, plus formatting and organization features.

I could use Web Mail with Gmail or ATT-Yahoo, to which I have access, but I prefer getting my mail to my PC and keeping it there.

You failed to mention Windows Live Mail which is Microsoft's free replacement for Outlook Express for Windows 7: Windows Live Essentials 2011 - Download free Microsoft programs The web installer for Live Essentials will let you download just "Mail" if that's all you need for now. You can always go back to the install file to download other parts of the suite when you want.

Hello everyone (And sorry for such a long thread title!)

One of the elderly gentleman where I work, has been given a Dell laptop by his Son that's running W7 64bit.

He has a copy of Office 2000 that he would like to install on this machine, and use the bundled Outlook from it as his default e-mail client. The only problem is, the current desktop PC he's using, is running Windows XP (unsure which version) and he's got Outlook Express as his e-mail viewing software on there at the moment.

Can the profile (sorry if that's the wrong term) from XP's Outlook Express be "ported" into the Outlook from Office 2000, whilst all of this is running on W7 64bit?

Many, many thanks in advance

A:Migrating XP's Outlook Express to Office 2000's Outlook on W7 64bit

Office 2000 is not supported on Windows 7, and is insecure and past it's lifetime support. That said, there may be workarounds to get it to work on 7, but that's probably more difficult then your original question. I'd think your friend would need a newer version, then revisit can it be done For instance:

Import messages into Windows Mail from Outlook Express

Import your messages or account from Outlook Express to Outlook - Outlook - Office.com

Trying to use Office 2000 would not be at all advisable.

Didn?t I see this a while ago and didn?t it contain a rather nasty Trojan?
The format of the October version differs slightly in that it includes a link to a website from which you may download the ?Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook Express Update? rather than an attached executable.

How do I make Microsoft Outlook the default email program? I make the change in IE version 5, but when I reboot the system (Win 98), Outlook Express is once again selected as the default email program.

I read in a previous post about using the following sequence for making Outlook Express the default. Is there anything similar for Microsoft Outlook? :
------------------------------------------------------
To make Outlook Express your default e-mail client:
Close OE, click Start/Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
---------------------------------------------------------

Thanks very much,

Had this error on a user's pc. Researched it here on the forum.
Found another thread with someone suggesting to use the following command to get it going:
Start->run..then type the following -> "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane"

This worked! The other thread has since been closed, but I wanted to reply and say WHY my users outlook suddenly started throwing out this error, because no one on the other thread was able to.

Turns out that my user had "accidentally" dragged their personal folder (containing 1000's of emails) into the "outbox".
Since the "outbox" folder is one to be used while an email is in the sending phase, it basically just shut down and wouldn't open for anything.

Luckily the command was able to get Outlook open and I was able to investigate what the user did to cause it.

Hope this info can help someone else.

However, this is a one time fix, and I am having to do it every single time that I boot up. Is there a more permanent fix to this problem - hopefully the fact that the above fix works will identify the root of the problem. If anyone knows this and can help I would be very grateful. A:changing default to outlook express from microsoft outlook

Use the "Import" feature of Outlook Express. if you choose to import "All" folders, it will include all messages and contacts data. or you can choose to import only contacts and not messages.

Obviously, it requires that both Outlook & Outlook Express are currently installed on the same PC.
Go here for a short tutorial: http://www.ehow.com/how_6374425_import-outlook-outlook-express.html

However, it must be pointed out that, for backup purposes, it's much easier to back up data in Outlook than is the case with Outlook Express.

A:outlook express 6/office outlook 2003

OE6 is an integral part of IE6.
If you are running XP, I would not advise deleting OE6, just ignoring it.

When you say you want Outlook 2003 to be your "default mailbox" I get confused. Do you mean your default email client perhaps? Your "mailbox" would be provided by your ISP, at their POP3 server.

To change the default, try setting Outlook as the default under IE6 (Tools - Internet Options - Programs)

I have tried but I am not having any luck. Since there are just so many hours in a day, I thought it best to ask you folks how it is done instead of blowing a few more hours trying it on my own.
Thank You for your time,

outlook express should come with windows (i think its part of IE) so you should have outlook express on the PC

I'm surprised you have MSoffice on the PC, a very expensive product suite

have a look in program files and see if you have a folder called outlook express in there should be a file named msimn.exe

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"

I would expect the program to be on the program list somewhere anyway

It is possible and you can either export from the File menu in Outlook or import the same way using OE. However, if you already have problems, it may be that your data file is too big for Outlook to handle. Check this by opening My Computer and from the Tools menu, select Folder Options then View. Tick to "Show hidden files an dfolders" and untick "Hide protected system file and folders". Click Apply, accept the warning and OK your way out.

Next, navigate to Documents and Settings>{yourusername}Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Outlook and if your Outlook Data File (type .pst) is larger than 2Gb, go back into Outlook and delete anything you can to trim it down.

Outlook Express will also suffer an overstuffed data file but if you can't do without your historic e-mails, Mozilla Thunderbird can handle up to 4Gb.

Hello,

I am using Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, and in it, I use four different folders that fall under the 'Inbox' folder. These folders have rules attached to them so that when particular e-mails come through, they get placed in to these four folders.

Now, because of that, I never get an e-mail notification in the system-tray. I never get the transparent display or the little envelope icon, because essentially no e-mails ever go directly to my 'Inbox'.

Is there any way to set it up so that e-mails that I receive in these four folders will still give me an e-mail notification?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

2. Highlight the Rule and Goto "Change Rule" drop down.
3. Edit Rule Settings.
4. In the Rules Wizard , click Next on the first screen
5. Scroll down all the way to the bottom on the second.
6. You will find an option - display a Desktop alert
7. Enable this option.
8. Go Next if you need more changes or Finish.

Run the Detect and Repair option In Outlook 2003,

If that fails to correct the problem:
With Outlook 2003 closed,

key in or copy and paste in the Run box:

Hi,
can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

greets
wizzle2003

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

My ex PC was installed with Win2000. My email application was Microsoft Outlook 2000.
My new PC is installed with WinXP Pro and Outlook Express 6. I tried to find a way to import my old emails (pst files already exported from old PC) into OE6 but without success. If this is not possible, what other options do I have?
Thanks

What method did you use to import the old emails?

OUTLOOK EXPRESS EMAILS:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\{GUID}
or
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Well here's a switch! Doc's needs everyones help for a change.

My mom's computer cannot send and recieve mail on either M/O & O/E. Problem started this yesterday morning some time and I cannot seem to put my finger on the problem.

She runs XP Pro and lives 8hrs away from me, so anything I do is via "remote desktop" and she only has "dialup". Talk about a painful process!

When I click on send and recieve it appears that a connection is being made to the server and infact it even tells me how many messages are there to download. It then starts to download (or appears to) and then suddenly stops and posts an error message stating that the connection to the server was interrupted.

I ran a test on my computer by configuring my M/O using here inbound settings and such and was able to download all her mail without a problem. That leads me to believe the problem is not the server but, infact on her machine.

I have checked all the basic things that I can think of but, at the moment "I'm stumped"

Ideas?

Doc.

A:Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express

If she's running an antivirus package that does a virtual IP proxie for the incoming/outgoing email AV check, then that might be the source of the problem. Try disabling virus checking for email and see if the behavior changes (This is a known bug in Norton, McAffee, and Avast, but it's rather rare. Usualy only happens for large outgoing attachments).

Also, since this is Dialup, I would check the actual modem to see if there's a problem on the line (or wityh the hardware). To much noise on the line can lead to droped packets and/or decreased bandwidth.

Try using Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 and see if there's still the same problem under that.

1. Can you tell me the difference between Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Outlook Express?
2. Is there a way to automatically transfer a new e-mail address directly to my address book(I use outlook express) when I receive an e-mail from a new correspondent?

Thank You

A:microsoft outlook/outlook express

In outlook Express go to tools and select add sender to address book, as far as differences between the 2 , outlook is a much more featured program than outlook express, I don't use it though, so will let someone with hands on experience tell you , ...Rhett

A few months ago I moved my email from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook. I don’t like Microsoft Outlook and would like to go back to Outlook Express. Is this possible? And what is involved? I really would just like to get my mail folders and address book back to Outlook Express. I have searched the Internet and have not been able to find any thing on it or anyone who has done it.

Would it be just a matter of backing up my Microsoft Outlook email and importing it in Outlook Express??? Will OE allow you to do that???

Any help would be appreciated. I am running Windows XP Home.
