I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Boy, I sure do have a lot of questions!

I bought this Microsoft Strategic Commanger controller-thingy about a year or so ago to play Quake 3 with and then my computer messed up on me and I went for about a year on my old PII-233 that couldn't run Quake 3. I didn't have much of a use for it then. Well, I finally got some spare change to fix me up a new computer and now I can run Quake 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the like and I'd like to try out my 'ole Strategic Commander again, but I can't find the disk. I'm running Windows XP Pro, and upon plugging the controller in the USB port it recognizes it and says its installed, but it doesn't light up and I get absolutely no functionality. I remember when I used to use it, I had to set it up first using the software and "turn it on" before it would even light up every time, even though the OS would recognize it upon plugging it in. I guess my main question is, where can I get the software for it? The microsoft website (including the one specifically for their controllers) has nothing of the sort that I can find. Like I said, the drivers appear to be loading, but I can't "turn it on" without the software.

In case you're wondering what the heck a Microsoft Strategic Commander is, here's a link:

i am using the microsoft sidewinder strategic commander game pad on my HP pavilion. i only use it for unreal tournament, and as it is almost impossible to get any help from MS i was hoping someone else out there might know something about this gizmo.
the only problem i have is that occasionally the thing will start off a game stuck moving to the right side. usually it's the right side, occasionally it's sending my player somewhere else. i'm not holding the thing off center or anything when it starts. the hastle is that once it starts it's almost impossible to get it back centered. it's very annoying when i'm into gaming (which i can only do on weekends anyway, so every minute counts).
i've tried unplugging strategic commander, as well as killing 'num lock', but that doesn't work, when i go back into a game the same thing starts up again.
any suggestions?

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard. The keyboard has a backlight on the keys as it is made for gaming from what I believe.

However everytime I boot my computer the backlight stays on and I have to turn it off by pressing the backlight key 3 times (three times as the keyboard has different dimming settings, bright, less bright, even less bright )

Does anyone know how I can have the backlight turned off forever unless I press the button to activate it?

I assume there must be a setting in the registry telling the keyboard to light up upon boot up?

So I've just started playing an MMO - Age of Conan, and I think I'm able to use my Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard properly for the first time. I pretty much bought it because it looked good... hah.. now I need to know how to set macros?

The game is pretty intense in the sense you must press your combo attack, then follow directions and press corresponding keys in order. I was hoping I could set up macro for some during pvp.

Would anyone be able to tell me how to do that? I'm completely over my head here, cheers.

Unless someone can tell me by recording the macro during the game, how do I then select what I've recorded so I can use it?

A:Microsoft Sidewinder mouse not working

...don't call Microsoft support without your receipt.

Unless you still have your receipt, you'll either have to settle for getting a much inferior mouse replacement (Sidewinder X3) or nothing at all.

Despite whatever the warranty and refund departments tell you (and you will have to call both), it will eventually loop back to the warranty department, which will tell you, despite earlier assurances that you'll be able to get a market-value refund without a receipt, that you'll need provide your receipt to get any kind of refund.

Otherwise, enjoy your brick of a mouse and Sidewinder X3 replacement.

I recently built myself a gaming computer, I then decided to hook up my old Microsoft Sidewinder joystick to play some flight simulators; upon doing this my computer failed to recognize the device. What could be a cause of this?

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Joystick Problems

if your joystick is usb plug n play then it should have found it. if not usb and plugs into a sound card then you will have to load the driver cd. only other thing could be that the usb cable end is bad or the stick itself. you might try a restart but I doubt that would make a difference on usb. bottom line sticks are cheap. Logitech extreme 3d pro can be had for $25.00 dollars just about anywhere.

Hello, I bought a Sidewinder from PC World about a year ago because I thought it was pretty standard and easy to set up being USB. Back then I connected the game controller to my front USB port and Windows Me detected hardware and began to install it. I then started Rayman 2 and it worked fine (it was the pad that Ubisoft had suggested). It went in my drawer and I hardly played on Rayman 2 again. I bought Windows XP a year ago and now I decided to have a go! I inserted the USB cable into the port and...nothing.

I have played around in control panel but nothing seems to happen, it won't work with Rayman 2 and it doesn't make any sounds when I insert and remove it from the port. I have checked the official sidewinder website but I can't find anything!

Please can someone help me get my Gamepad working! Any replies are extremely appreciated!

I came across an excellent flight simulator (Flight Gear) that makes me want to take the old M/S joystick out of moth balls. Trouble is when I hooked it up, it apparently does not know Windows 7 x64bit from apple butter!
I have a USB adapter that shares a USB2 with a 15 pin game port; so obviously they both function as USB2 ports. The old joystick has a 15 pin plug on it and attaches to this connector, but nothing happens. The machine does not recognize it.
Can this 15 pin game port connection function connected through a USB2 to the Motherboard? Can settings be made to tell the machine that it is there or will the Microsoft sidewinder force feedback joystick just not function in that lash-up?
Trying to load the factory included programs/drivers fails because it will not allow Windows 7 to load them. If this type of connection will not function, is there some kind of a card I could get to make it function? And it that is available how does one go about getting a driver that will function with a W-7 x64bit system.

Force Feedback loses some effects with default driver supplied with vista ultimate 32bit after roughly 2+ effects are applied at once. (it happens in multiple racing games)  I have noticed that it shows steer Left/Right and accelerate as X/Y axis but brake is listed as Z axis.  Shouldn't force feedback be tagged as Z axis?  I have tested the controller with xp and the same games and the controller works fine with the default xp driver.  Sidewinder software wont install on vista so i can't load any different drivers to check if this is the issue.  Note: In the default xp driver it lists left/right/brake/accel. as x/y and z as feedback.  Any ideas?

Hello Tracker,

According to your post, you are now using Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel mouse. This device has no driver for Windows Vista provided by Microsoft. Therefore, some functions may miss, very possibly including the problems you encountered.

For more information about compatibility, please refer to the following site:
http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductDetails.aspx?m=v&g=d&cid=&sv=sidewinder&f=&pn=Microsoft%20SideWinder%20Force%20Feedback%20Wheel&oid=33

Hi everyone.

I have googled for this and found a couple of threads on the subject, but they skim over the actions needed to do what they suggest. Can anyone please fill in the gaps in English that a 10 year old can understand? :/

SideWinder Force Feedback Wheel (USB)

"...some threads I've seen have recommended software solutions to get Force Feedback working. Try PPJoy or GlovePIE and let me know if either one helps."
PPJoy - Parallel Port joystick driver for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP

Glovepie - cannot display the webpage

Say It's not so.. (Sidewinder)

"Hmmm.... I just plugged mine in and Win 7 (x64) installed the drivers and it appears to be in working order, though I've yet to try it with a game."

I plug mine in and it doesn't do anything. At first it brought up the autorun from the disc and that just gives an error message saying "The version of this file isn't compatibile with the version of windows you are using..." But above he said it installed... what was the difference?

"I was able to calibrate my USB force feedback wheel and it works fine..."

"this solution actually worked for me. running in compability mode for xp service pack 2."

I have tried to run compatability mode but I can't find in the "D" drive properties. Where else would I look?

I could carry on, but can anyone help with a solution that works please?

Mike.

A:Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback wheel drivers. Not win7 compatable

I suggest you to install the XP driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.
Follow these steps:
1. Right-click on the installation file and select properties.
2. Now click on the compatibility tab.
3. Under compatibility mode, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.
4. From the drop down menu, select Windows XP(service pack 2).
5. Click Apply and then click OK.

Fine in theory, but which file is the installation file?

Hi:
I have multiple files and documents scattered on several computers and hard drives. They are In folders, in subfolders, in subfolders, in subfolders in subfolders.

I'm looking for strategic advice as to how best to organize these and remove duplicates. I would expect this would also atrequire a significant proprietary program.

I will greatly appreciated advice. Thank you.

A:Seeking strategic advice re file and folder Organization

If I was you I'd think about the structure you want and create it with empty folders. For example in documents you may want folders called "Home", "Work", "Personal", "Public", "Software" (or something like that) with subfolders within them.

Then copy from all your disparate locations into the relevant folder. It will tell you if you have duplicates when you do this (assuming the file name and type is the same).

It could be a long and tedious job but you'll end up with a coherent structure. There are programs that look for duplicate files but from what I understand that you want that isn't going to be sufficient. Best to put everything where you want it and then look and see if you still have duplicates after.

Just my 2c - I should do it myself really

I have grown tired of my high disk usage every time I open a lot of tabs or have just closed a memory heavy game. So I decided to partition my HDD wherein there is a "dedicated" partition for the Pagefile on the outer part of the disk.
P: partition size: 8320 MB
pagefile: 8192 - 8192 MB (128 MB "allowance")

The results was surprisingly better! Now every time I close CIV V I don't have to wait for the system to write all those junk data from the RAM to the pagefile. If you're thinking it's probably because It's a fresh install and I don't have much going on in my HDD yet, I assure you that my HDD has never been 1/3 full. I store my bulky files in an External HDD.

Please note though that this isn't some sort of "Make Your PC Faster for FREE!" tutorial. I just want to share the problem I've been having and how I "fixed" it. I actually don't have objective proof of the speed increase. This probably won't have any effect if you've never experienced HDD bottlenecking whatsoever. But if you do have this kind of problem and don't mind doing all of this, please do report your experience in this thread.

If you absolutely insist this is some kind of voodoo please feel free to explain what my problem actually was and what fixed it. Thank you.

PS. This forum is awesome!

My last computer was built by me and I had no problems plugging in the joystick to the USB and Windows XP PRO would autodetect it. In fact It still works with my other system.
When I plug in the joystick on this computer I get nothing. When I go to add to my Game Controllers it says "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please see the Device Manager."
So in the device manager there is no gameport under sound, video, game controllers tab. I tried manually installing a gameport(standard, Ess, Neomagic etc.) and none of them work. I looked on MS for some drivers but MS claims that they are all built into windows. I tried looking for gameport drivers from Compaq(waste of time), I called compaq and asked them about this problem. They couldn't tell me how to install a gameport(though they said I should have one) and they told me it was a problem with the joystick and I would have to contact MS for help, which is not true because the joystick works fine on my other computer. I know its because there is no gameport/driver. But they couldn't get one to work and couldn't explain why . So that was a waste of time.
Now Im using a Compaq Mobo with built-in Sound, Soundmax and in the past the gameport was always connected to the soundca... Read more

I don't know if this will be helpful or not

I also have a Microsoft Sidewinder, but it is on a Gateway( old beastie) on windows 98. When I first installed it, I had a problem with it not being detected( after first installing the driver) . Finally, tried the second port( I am stubborn) and viola, it found it.

Maybe it will "see" it on the other port?

Hi,
is there any way to get my MS Sidewinder Precision Pro to work on Win XP Pro? My soundcard and gamecontrollers work fine, but when trying to install the joystick in control panel, it says that my joystick isn't connected. I have it connected with a USB adapter because my computer doesn't have the original input. What can I do?

You may be out of luck with this one. My Microsoft Sidewinder Steering wheel worked with Windows 98 but not with Windows XP. Microsoft also provided a statement that they would not support the device in Windows XP. Yours may be in the same class. I got the wheel to work once after numerous install attempts but when I shut down the computer that was it. It was not being recognized at all. I eventually gave it away. Never found out why Microsoft refused to support its own hardware.

After a few weeks of installing, tweaking, tuning, troubleshooting, etc. my win 7 pro install...

I realize the MS does not support my SideWinder Force Feedback 2 Game Controller in win7.

How can this possibly be? Made by MS, and an MS os. Go to the ms win7 hardware compatablilty page and it says something about information coming soon.

Vista required no drivers, or at least no download was needed. The device was just recognized..

I can't believe it..

A:Say It's not so.. (Sidewinder)

Hmmm.... I just plugged mine in and Win 7 (x64) installed the drivers and it appears to be in working order, though I've yet to try it with a game - Freespace for example.

Also, what game are you playing that needs that stick, because the game will probably be the issue. So....

PS, It worked the same way in Vista as Win 7, so...???

I have a new computer with Win98SE installed.
I downloaded and installed the updated driver from Microsoft(v3.02) for my Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro. Upon attempting to configure the Sidewinder the "game controller" continues to inform me that the device is not connected, even though it is connected.

Please advise as to what I am missing or what I need to do to convince the game controller that the device is indeed connected, etc.

AT this time the controller ID assignment is #1, however even if I change it the computer still does not recognize that the device is connected.

Thank you.
