Thinkpad T400 not booting, lights below the screen...

Q: Thinkpad T400 not booting, lights below the screen...

I put my Thinkpad T400 in hibernate, but next morning I could not boot. When I press the power button, the lights below the screen turning on and I hear the sound of the hard disk, and the turns off. I do not even see anything on the screen; it is just black. The process keeps on repeating in a loop, unless I press the power button to turn off. I have tried the static charge removing trick. I have also removed the hard disk put it back again, but did not work either. Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a T400 ThinkPad upgraded to Windows 10 that suddenly had a blank screen and no lights except for wifi.On closer inspection I discovered the backlight is not lit during startup, whilst ThinkPad splash and window symbol are displayed but then, screen goes blank and then I hear the windows startup sound.Displays perfectly on an external monitor. I have replaced inverter, lcd cable and screen .... nothing works! I'm not sure if I should just resell the parts I bought and get another laptop .... can I transfer Windows 10 to another machine or is there another fix I could try? Hi everyone. I've a problem with mi Lenovo ThinkPad T400. The brightness is always at the minimum, and cannot be changed. But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. If I connect it to an external monitor, then there is no problem, but you know, I don't wanna carry an external monitor with the laptop. Do you know how to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

Hi all, I have a T400 from early '09. It's been a fantastic laptop, though I now only use it for when I travel. Over the last year it's been running very hot, especially when playing games. I've been using a portable fan to cool it down, didn't think about getting it checked out because I didn't use it very often. Today it froze up and I force shut it down by holding the power key. When it rebooted it ran a disk check (I had a sleep and didn't see the results) and when it loaded windows it was running extremely slowly. After a bit of experimenting I worked out the wifi and switchable graphics drivers weren't working. I was able to get it to a usable state by disabling the discrete graphics in the bios and booting into safe mode. I was going to reinstll the drivers. While they were downloading I tried to re-enable the discrete graphics (in the bios) and booted. However before I got to the boot manager screen, I got a BSOD (c000021a). I turned the laptop off, but it would not start again. None of the lights on the laptop are working, even though it is plugged in. The only things I changed in the bios were the switchable graphics (which I changed back to the default setting) and the "beep" on hibernation. I have no idea if the battery has any charge, it should be at 100% as it was plugged in the entire time. I noticed the laptop was running very hot while I was working with it. Our tech guy seems to think the motherboard may have overheated and "mel... Read more

Hello, a week ago I had what I am now refering to as Major Disaster Number One. When I turned on my Laptop it didn't boot had a black screen and made loud beeping noises. This was eventually resolved by removing one of the memory cards as one of the slots was defective. In the meantime I had done quite a lot of fiddling with the system.

The PC had been working fine for a whole week until Major Disaster Number Two happened today. This time thankfully no loud beeping but black screen and flashing num/caps locks (twice). According to the HP website 2 flashes indicates a BIOS problem. I did what was recommended and took battery out and pressed power button for a minute. Tried this several times in different combinations but with no success. Tried reconnecting hard drive and swapping memory around again.

Actually something I should mention is that when I first turned it on today it came up with a white screen, totally white, and after waiting a minute I impatiently turned the computer off at which point it refused to turn on again.

I have looked on various forums including this one but don't know what the PC terminology "post" and "flash" mean with reference to boot up and bios.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My G50-80 Laptop (Lenovo) - Type 80L0 running Win10 stopped working back in 2016, My warranty ran out right when it returned from repairs and lucky for me it just happened to break 2 weeks after being repaired! I tried a few things back then but nothing worked and I gave up, buying a cheap laptop just to get me through my job. I'm returning to this laptop though because I feel like it can be fixed and I want to give it to a friend if I can fix it. I've tried hard resetting, with and without battery. Opened it up, reseated ram and memory. I can't access BIOS. I plugged it into an HDMI display to see if something was wrong with the laptop display. I might have done a bunch of other things I can't remember. Nothing has worked. I did notice when reseating that my laptop had room for a two-part memory but the second part wasn't there, I don't know if this was a mistake by the repair team? Or if it's not needed. (My computer knowledge is lacking.)  I sent my laptop in for repair because the USB got overloaded and broke every input on the right side of the computer. They replaced everything but what the computer needed to work again and sent it back, so I sent it in again..... This time it came back fixed. My warranty ended. And then it broke 2 weeks later. I'm tired of my laptops crapping out and I just want to fix them myself so I don't have to keep buying what I can't afford. I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. I have a T400 and installed Windows 10 about 2 months ago.  I initially ran into the issue with the switchable graphics option in the BIOS rendering the screen blank.  After finding the solution to that issue on this forum, I have been able to use the T400 with the Windows 10 OS generally without incident and it has actually run better than Windows 7.  Each time there have been updates to Windows 10, I have had to enter the BIOS and change the switchable graphics option to discrete and I was good to go.  There were new Windows 10 updates installed overnight and I once again accessed the BIOS and changed the switchable graphics to discrete.  However, this time, the T400 gets stuck in the boot up process.  Upon powering up, the opening Thinkpad screen appears followed by the initialization process.  However, at this point, the screen goes black and all that appears is a small flashing cursor at the top of the left corner of the screen.

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

I tried downoading and installing this:

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Display on your ThinkPad T400.

We have verified the image and the issue is related to LCD panel, but I suggest you to check with reseating the LCD cable on both the side which is connected to the LCD panel and also to the system board.

The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Hi all! I just bought a second-hand ThinkPad t460 (20FM) laptop which was working fine when I got it. Because I just wanted to make sure I was all up to date and working I started a factory-restet (F11 -> erase all files etc.)During this reinstall I was also asked if I should erase the TPM.  I did.  THE PROBLEM:When I boot my computer, I see the Lenovo logo and the screen is backlit until I get to the Windows 10 login. Then the screen darkens and I need a flashlight to see anything on the screen.  I have run the Lenovo companion and downloaded all the updates... Does anyone have an idea!? I'm stuck. Please help! Thanks!

I know I am behind the times using a Thinkpad T400 with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit but I am having a heck of a time using  this machine as it constantly freezes up.  I tried running the diagnostics and it failed on the SMART tests and did not complete the remainder of the tests ie video card, etc.  The final result code was:W1UKDVUB5-QE4MD9 Does anybody know what this code means - how much trouble am I in and why is this machine freezing up all the time? Thanks for any thoughts or assistance. Lorelei

I see the dot of the "i" in the ThinkPad logo is back-lit (the dot glows red).  It appears to show the computer is in use, sleeping, etc.  Not sure the value of that given that I seemed to survive without it in all my previous ThinkPads.  Does anyone have any insight as to why they added the red-dot "i"?  For those that may not have noticed, it is in the ThinkPad brand logo on the backside of the LCD (backside of the computer screen - facing away from you as you use the system). Is there more value to this than meets the eye?  Just curious. Thank you.

hello, came home from work one day looking to enjoy some online gaming to unwind and to my surprise my pc would not boot up. here is what i know.

HP Media Center pc m7640n
when this pc was 1 month old it had to go to HP for repair but i was not told what the issue was. I think it was HD. After sometime, over 1 year it would not start. I took it to best buy and i was told it needed a power supply. I had them install an Antec 500watt supply and it was working again. Prior to when it stopped booting up i would receive a message stating the system fan was not operating from time to time but all the fans were on. Since purchase i have upgraded the video card to an ATI Radeon 4670hd card. other than those 2 changes, the video card and the PS the computer is stock from HP.

currently if i plug in the pc and flip the switch on the power supply all the lights on the pc go on steady. The hard drive is getting power, i can feel it vibrating. the fan on the power supply is on and the fan on the video card is on but the system and cpu fan do not spin

The dvd drive will not open or power up as no lights will go on. I have tried disconnecting as well

MB is Asus A8M2N-LA Nvidia 6150 LE chipset AM2 socket.

Is there any chance this is a PS issue and not the MB?

All advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have a T540p and noticed that the ethernet lights remain iluminated when the device enters hibernation (plugged in or on battery) when there is not an ethernet cable connected.  After searching around online, I found two similar cases; one was the result of a driver issue and was was a hardware fault. I am led to believe this is a driver issue as the port functions properly and has never sustained any form of liquid damage. I tried disabling the Wake on LAN features as described in the thread I came across, but the behavior still persists. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Heyas all

Been a while since i last posted here, but still the first place i come for answers
Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction.

My laptop (Acer Aspire 3054 Wxmi) decided to go belly up on me today. At first i thought it was the HDD, but even with a different drive in it still has the same problem. It picks up the drive in the bios, i've tried different ram, taken out the battery, and done everything else i could think of. No dice though, it refuses to boot. The only thing i noticed is that the HDD light keeps blinking, but it's not going anywhere. I'm assuming this is an error light, but i can't find anywhere to tell me what it means.

Hopefully someone with a little more experience could shed some light on my problem.

Thanks in advance
BW

I needed to replace my keyboard on my Thinkpad Yoga 20CD, so I swapped parts, and long story short, no post, no BIOS, no external video.  When I plug in the AC adapter, I get 3 blinking red lights on the "i" Thinkpad LED.  If I press the power button, the backlight on the keyboard comes on for 1 second, fades away, and the red LED stays on.  Fan on the CPU spins for about 3 seconds, then stops.  There is a chip on the motherboard underneath the card reader that gets EXTREMELY hot on both the AC power and battery, even without turning it on.  I guess I just need to know if I somehow fried the board when swapping parts?  If there is a short somewhere on the board?  Is there anything I can do to get it to boot, and prevent it from getting so hot?  I've tried a complete power drain, removing the CMOS battery, and leaving it sit overnight with nothing plugged in, all to no avail.  Any help or suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, I've been searching the forums about this topic, but I haven't found anything specific for my case: Symptoms: After turning on the laptop, the screen works fine for a few seconds and then it goes dark. The LCD display is working correclty, but with no backlight (still can see the screen if I use an external light source like a flashlight. All indicator lights (wifi, power, battery) work correctly.Image is displayed correctly if connected to external monitor.Problem happens in windows and BIOS (rules out driver issue).Realized that if I turn down the brightness all the way down and then press fn + F7 or if I close and open the lid, the screen would light up back again. If I turn the birghtness up, the screen goes dark again, but if I repeat step 4 it still works. After a few minutes of operating at minimun brightness, I can turn it all the way up and it won't go dark.Yesterday the backlight finally went out for good and not working at all.I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the inverter, mobo fuse or cable. Maybe someone here has seen these specific symptoms before and could lend me some knowledge and save me some time in debugging this issue. Thanks

A:T400 no screen backlight

Assuming you have a CCFL screen (with an inverter), the inverter is most likely.  Some T400 have CCFL, some have LED.  With LED panel, it is probably bad panel.

A:lenovo t400 led board help for my led screen

T400 was a transitional model.  The previous model, t61, had CCFL backlights.  The next model, t410, was all LED backlights and the video cable also had the power for the backlight.  The LED board just had the status LEDs.  T400 had some CCFL backlight screens with a normal inverter.  As inverter converts the DC on the motherboard to the AC used by a CCFL bulb.  Some T400 machines had screens like your picture which has an LED backlight, no inverter and an LED control board that split off the DC to the LED backlight into the little ribbon cable in your picture.  The LED backlight models use an entirely different video cable.

It sounds like your machine originally had a CCFL backlight.  The net result is that the panel you bought won't work for you.  Return it if you can.

Hi,Maybe somebody can help me with this. Today when I turned on my T400 the LDC screen went black after starting windows. I can see the booting messages but when starts loading windows 7 (displays the windows logo) the LDC screen in the laptop goes black. If I connect a external monitor directly to the laptop, LDC starts displaying.Even if the monitor the monitor does not have any display the LDC is working. If I change the settings to display in boths. Both screens work. I made all possible combinations and everytime if I disconnecte the external monitor the screen goes black.I used a dock station and it does not work. LDC and monitor (connected to dock station) were black. If I connect the monitor directly to the laptop the dock station and the LDC worked fine. So display in dock station and LDC only work is an external monitor is directly connected to the laptop. Any idea why this is happening or have a similar problem?Thank you,Rob
