Preferred Solution: Could not start PsExec service on target machine. Access is denied.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Could not start PsExec service on target machine. Access is denied.

Hi,

When opening the Command Prompt, please right click it and run as Administrator. Meanwhile, make sure the user has administrator privileges on target PC. If the issue
persists, try to disable UAC on both sides.

As far as I know the Security Level on Windows 7 is higher than the level on Windows XP. Therefore, 'psexec' works to all machines.

Every time I Restart the Laptop, it opens to the Desktop, but there is a period of sometimes upwards of a minute, where once everything is loaded, the Desktop freezes.

Today in Windows Task Manager - Services Tab, I see that WdiServicesHost is not running. When I right click on the line, this is what appears;

....but then when I click on Start Service, I get this nasty little message;

So where to now to beat this problem?

A:Wdi Service Host not running - in trying Start Service : Access is Denied

Hello,

Looking at my computer, for me it is stopped, and when I try to start it, I get the same error message. My computer is working fine, so I think this is not your original problem. However, some websites suggest that it should be started. I am slightly sceptical as to the accuracy of this information, but here is the link to this file on my favourite website for looking these things up: Diagnostic Service Host - Process and Service wiki

I am unable to start the RPC Service - it fails with "Access is denied" - which in turn is causing all the dependent services to fail. This machine was (is?) infected with spyware that I was able to remove with ComboFix. I have tried starting the RPC service manually using the command specified in the registry entry (%SystemRoot%\system32\svchost -k rpcss) and nothing happens, no error message , etc. If I try net start rpcss I get the "Access is denied" message.

My first thought was to replace svchost.exe and explorer.exe with versions expanded from the Service Pack cache. Normally that is straight forward with a CD-ROM drive or the Recovery Console and unfortunately this computer has neither (its a mini). I tried to drag and drop the Recovery Console file onto CF but drag and drop is not functional on this computer (presumably because explorer.exe is not loading right). I also tried running "cf <recovery console file>>" to see if that would install it, but it did not.

So my questions:

1) Any suggestions to troubleshoot the RPC Server "Access is denied error"

2) What steps can I take to manually install the Recovery Console without drag and drop?

Thanks.

Michael

I have a VB script that issues StartService. This works fine under XP. It also works under Win7, but only if I run it as Administrator. If I run it as a another user with Administrator rights, it fails with "Access Denied".

Is there any way to use StartService without having to run as Administrator?

Thanks for any input.

A:Security Center service cannot start on Windows 7: Error 5 Access Denied

Most third party security AV/AS software will disable Windows security software in favor of their own. This is normal. Using more than one anti-virus security program at one time is not recommended. They can interfere with each other giving you gaps in coverage, cause conflicts that lead to system crashes, and tend to slow your system down by using excessive resources. Pick one that you like and stick with it.

My wife's laptop runs Vista Business SP1. It is in a Server 2003 domain. She connects through my wireless AP, but the DHCP service is actually provided by a Pix firewall. I have 3 other laptops running XP that all connect fine, and so do all wired clients. The Vista laptop only gets an internal connection and an auto-configuration IP. The DHCP client is not running (see the error in the event log below). All this started a couple of days ago. I am not aware of any configuration changes that conincided with this issue.Everything seems work fine with a static IP address, but that's not a solution.I found a few threads that talked about a similar issue that was resolved by adding full permissions to two registry keys for the Network Service account. This did not work for me. It sounds like my issue could be related to this and this, but the laptop here worked fine for years in the exact same configuration. Alas, everybody seems to be in the dark about this issue. Is there really no solution but reinstalling Vista?Log Name:      SystemSource:        Service Control ManagerDate:          2009-06-23 22:54:15Event ID:      7023Task Category: NoneLevel:         ErrorKeywords:      ClassicUser:          N/AComputer:      [...]Description:The DHCP Client service terminated with the following error: Access is denied.

Hi, thanks for the post. In order to narrow down the issue, you can collect log file on this issue.

On the problematic computer, restore original settings and make sure you can repro "Access Denied" error. Then, follow below steps to collect data.

1. Download process monitor from

http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessMonitor.zip

2. Extract ProcessMonitor.zip to the problematic client.
3. Run Procmon.exe (Process Monitor)
4. Reproduce this issue.
5. Click File->Save from Process Monitor, compress and send the log files to me.
6. Send ?access denied? screen capture to me.

Repeat Step 1 - 6 on another machine with this kind of issue and send data to me. You can send it to me via [email protected] Zhu - MSFT

System: Win 7 Ultimate x64 on an HP Pavilion DV6. My account is the only proper user account on the laptop and is an admin account.
When trying to do a system restore, it came up with an error that the Volume Shadow Copy service was not working, though that error code is irrelevant for the purposes of this question as I later managed to run system restore in safe mode from an old restore point...

"Windows could not start the Volume Shadow Copy service on Local Computer.

I then changed it to automatic and tried again, same error. I have since tried everything I can possibly think of (including setting it back and forth between manual & auto while trying the below solutions) to get the service to start, to no avail. Solutions tried so far:

I have been trying to resolve this issue since Friday with no great progress.

The main issue is that a program on the laptop needs the Background Intelligent Transfer Service set to Automatic start, however when you try to change this setting, I get an Access Denied error (Error 5), I also get a similar access denied error when trying to manually start the service.

I have done the following 'general fixes' with no success; chkdsk /r, sfc /scannow, windows update repair tool and windows repair.
Other things I've tried:

Setting permissions in the registry for the BITS entries to give full access using the user's account.
Setting a password on the Administrator account.
Repairing BITS using guide on another forum.
Start the service from Administrator account (in safe-mode) and new Temp account (with admin rights).
Precautionary virus & spyware scan as I've read that Vundo virus can cause problems like this, albeit not found.
Other information that may help:

I get the same error on the Automatic Updates service.
I noticed corruption on the Path to Executable:, where instead of reading %SystemRoot% it read %fystemRoot%, although I fixed these entries in Regedit.
When going into Safe-Mode it logs straight in to the user created account instead of normally asking at logon screen which account to login with (Administrator account not in list, but does exist)
Similar to above when I created the Temp account, it logged straight in to the main user ac... Read more

Hi Bob,

This issue can be caused due to the incorrect permission settings for the administrators group.

I would like to suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

1. In the "Start" menu, locate "Command Prompt". Right-click and choose "Run as Administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2. Type the following commands, then press "Enter" to execute them one by one. Please note the space before the command and its parameter.

takeown /f C:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\rtbackup
cacls C:\windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\rtbackup /G administrators:F

3.   Restart the computer to check the issue.

And yet quite possibly another no brainer for you all, I work on a large number of machines for family and friends, mostly 2000 or XP Home and Pro and to be quite honest with you I am not sure what the best way to connect to these machines would be, what I mean is I am soooooo tired of setting up a machine in my shop, running up stairs to my primary machine to either get in remotly or tap into the c:\ drive of the other machine only to realize that I do not have permition, or I do not remember the computer name, or I do not have the password, or I can not log on as the "guest". Do you know what I mean? I get so frustrated when I get the "Access Denied" message. it seems to me I spend more time trying to get into these machines than I do reparing them. So I guess my question would be, once I have the machine setup what is the FASTEST way for me to gain access to that machine from another machine? Lets just focus on XP and 2000, Do I really have to setup a user first to gain access? or is there a quicker way. Thanks.

Hey all, first off let me say if this has already been posted in some shape or form, I'm really sorry. I have had a look but can't find anything to help me..

The problem I have is I have a vista os on my laptop, and i have a wireless LAN set up. I can access the internet on my laptop through this lan, however, if I try to access files on my xp os computer, which has the modem/router plugged into it, I get told I don't have permission. On the xp machine I have allowed my documents to be shared, and as far as I know, I have let anyone access it (I did this just so I could get the file sharing working, I was going to look at security afterwards). Anyway, I have tried everything I know (which is very little about networks) to get it to work, but the same result each time. If someone could write up a quick walkthrough on how to set up the file sharing, or point me to a website that I can find out, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have Vista Home Premium on my laptop.
XP proffesional on desktop computer
and a etgear wireless modem/router.

Luke

P.S. I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers lol, I know pretty much everything else, so the walkthough doesn't have to be extremely detailed .

am doing this for a client and this sharing has got me stumped. ive done everything m.s. sites says and still i get access permission errors on the xp when trying to access the vista. i can see the vista owners folder as well as the public.

i have my main machine being xp pro - other machine is vista business. trying to setup file sharing between both machines. the vista machine can see and access all the shared folders i have set on the xp machine with no problems. problems is trying to access the vista c:\users\owner\mydocuments i keep getting a permissions error when accessing from the xp pro machine.

i have set the shares i believe correctly on the vista machine. i do not have specific users defined on the vista and i dont want that. basically what i am trying to do is copy files from my xp machine to the vista c:\users\owner\mydocs folder

if i copy from the xp to the public share folder i have no problem but i want to copy directly to the c:\users\owner\mydocs folder.

- I have created a user test with the password test on all three machines.
- The "test user" is member of Administrators on all three computers.

PC1: Win 7 Ultimate

Other things behave the same. E.g. "shutdown -m \\machine"
Seems like my PC1 has something set up different. But I can't find it.
I checked the "Advanced sharing settings" and Local Security Policies.

EDIT1: \\PCx\Users is working well in any combination.

So the issue seems to be somehow related to the security rights of user "test" on
PC2 and PC3. Seems as test does not have the same rights there, although being
member of "Administrators".
Any ideas are highly appreciated!

And last but not least: A friend of mine has the same strange thing.
But he has one Win 7 Pro and one Win 7 Home Premium. Access from one
machine to the other is fine. But not vice versa.

A:Network Access Denied - but working on other machine?!

Got the solution: Have to turn UAC off, then it's working. VERY weird!

Hello,

I work for a local high school and have been having a lot of problems sharing a printer attached to a Windows 2000 machine by an parallel cable. I'm trying to share the printer with 2 Windows XP Pro machines. All 3 PCs have the same logon and I have granted access to the printer for that account. File and printer sharing are also checked on all 3 PCs.

Here is a little more information since I had a lot of problems getting this to work. We have a LAN and Novell Server in the school, but the only manages the office PCs. All the PCs are part of workgroups with each room being its own workgroup. The 3 PCs I'm working with are attached to network drops. I could not use the Add Printer Wizard to have the two XP PCs find the printer after it was shared. I had to get the IP address of the 2000 machine and then type in that IP address under run on the two XP PCs. I then double clicked on the shared printer that showed up and installed the drivers. The printer shows up on the two XP PCs as HPDesk 990 on x.x.x.x (the IP address of the 2000 machine). When I first added the printer, it worked fine. After rebooting however, I cannot access it. It just shows Access Denied. The only thing I can think of is that the logon on Windows 2000 requires a password but you don't have to enter as password to login on the two XP machines.

Is there anything else I need to check for? Thanks.

Mythos

A:Access denied when trying to share LPT attached printer on Win2K machine

Make sure those PCs are ALL in the SAME workgroup, otherwise NO share.
And using a password is a good thing for a flawless connection, even if all passwords are the same.

Hey people

I just bought the new GTA 4 and it apperently needs service pack 3, so i downloaded it from microsoft download center but in the middle of the install it stops and says access denied. It then continues to remove the service pack again and when it is almost done it said that it ways not removed corretly and that XP might not work optimatly.
So i tried all 3 solutions given to me on the support site that windows has on the problem,http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377, and none of them give any result. So i try i pasting in :
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose
in the notepad and save as reset.cmd but when I click on it opens and then closes again in less then a second. :/
So i tried finding out if the registry update thing failed as microsoft shows you how at,http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377, and mine has apperently failed and it says 'DoRegistryUpdates failed' in the svcpack.

Running around in circles for hours trying to resolve this issue. Message is Event ID: 7023 The Diagnostic Policy Service service terminated with the following error: Access is denied. This problem is NOT about accessing the internet, as I am here on the forum posting this. It's about other event errors caused by this. Event ID: 7023 Diagnostic Service Host service terminated with the following error: The requested control is not valid for this service and Event ID: 7023 The Diagnostic Service Host service terminated with the following error: The requested control is not valid for this service.

The DPS service is set to automatic start up, but it can't start at boot, which I assume that it is a SYSTEM privilege. I checked every entry of the User right assignment of the Local Security Policy and made sure that the SYSTEM, the Admin, and myself (I am the Admin) have access to everything. This is a single user desktop without password or user restrictions. I also modified the registry of the DPS Start: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\DPS\Start and tested it with the values of 0, 1, 2, and 3 and rebooted each time, but it made no difference.

I know their are other threads on here about this particular problem but I am not having any luck with their suggestions so here it is:

I have also tried system restore, but the problem originated before any of the system restore points were created.

This is a customers computer, and I am convinced something happened around 4 or 5 months ago right after he switched from Cricket Mobile Broadband to a standard cable internet connection.

I have tried too many things to list but still with no luck;
- Un-installing and re-installing SP1 and 2
- Re-Installing wireless and wired internet connection drivers and utilities
- Substituting svchost.exe with backed up versions in c:winsxs
- Using a hacking utility to set all the NTFS permissions of the file to allow everyone to do anything
- Scanned for Malaware
- SFC /SCANNOW and CHKDSK /F (both did not find anything)
- Startup Repair from the Vista Install disc

I am tired of messing with it so I backed up all of his files onto my external 500gb USB HDD and I'm going to try re-installing vista... this sucks HELP!!

when i open properties, i can change the startup type (manual, auto etc...)

i did have IO-bit Advanced SystemCare installed
i ju8st removed it.
i did a sweep with malwarebytes, and cleaned the system with CC cleaner.

i also had a hard drive that i had lost access to
possible it was a permissions thing.
i re-formatted it, and that is all OK now
as far as i know.
not sure if its related, but, its the last problem i had.

thanks

A:Diagnostic Service Host: access denied ?

Hi there Brad Since you had Advanced System Care installed I suspect it's the culprit. ASC is considered a "system optimizer" which usually includes a so-called "registry cleaner" - using these are not recommended at all since they carry a very high risk of messing up the Windows Registry - thus breaking your Windows installation. And iOBit's reputation is not that good, as they are known for shady work ethics - the most famous one is them stealing the definitions database from Malwarebytes Corporation. If you are using CCleaner, I recommend that you NEVER use the Registry Cleaner option for the reasons I listed above.Hope this helps.Regards,Alex

I thought this may have been my problem, as I have a 1.5 yr old monitor that just blacks out at will. I attempted to download the fix, directly from the blogsite, Prevx Black Screen Fix Blog and from that point, lost my internet connection (wireless), and could not reconnect. The fix was an executible file, "fixshell.exe" with additional instructions to run "http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX", after download through the Task Manager. By the time I clicked on the download, the internet connection was lost. I called the support desk for Belkin (the wireless router) and LinkSys (the wireless adapter), and both said their components were operating fine after a few instructions. When I hover over the network icon in the system tray I recieve this message: "The dependency service or group failed to start". Hi all,

I've been trying to install the Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I am able to install it, but after I restart my computer, Windows attempts to configure the Service Pack and then fails causing it the system to revert. Once the desktop appears, I see a window that says the configuration failed with error code 80070005. I am still able to get to my desktop and operate as normal, but no Service Pack is installed.

I've tried some of the main troubleshooting options: Used the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT), ran a sfc /scannow (no problems), removed temporary internet files, ran Microsoft Hotfix, disabled antivirus and firewalls during installation and configuration.

Here are some notes that may help with diagnostics:

I have 25.6 Gigs available on C:\Windows drive. Partitioned drive.

I recently changed everything (CPU, Mobo, VGU, Mem) on this PC (although looking at the history, I've never had service pack 1 installed).

Attachments:

Attached are the shortened CB Log (I think it captures the errors that occurred during configuration) and a screenshot of my Windows Update history.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello,

I have been trying to enable the search feature on my windows 7 64-bit machine but when I attempt to do so, or use indexing, nothing seems to happen. When I try to enable windows search in services I get "Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer - error 5 access denied."

When I detect problems in search and indexing it tells me windows search service is not running but lists the error as not fixed. When I try to manually add a config folder in the ProgramData - Microsoft - Search - Data folder it erases itself after a few seconds.

This account has full admin control, I don't get it. I even tried to do this through the hidden admin account.

This laptop is only a month old but I can't turn the search feature on. I think maybe if I modify it to not include the external in indexing it would not mess up, but I can't even touch the modify button without enabling windows search, which is currently impossible. Any help?

Try reregistering the windows installer service:

You want to unregister and then reregister.

1) Start> Run

2) Type in msiexec /unreg

3) Press enter

4) Start> Run

5) Type in msiexec /regserver

6) Press enter

Hopefully that will fix it, if not let us know. A Guy

Hi,

I am trying to troubleshoot wwan autoconfig service issue but so far I have not been able to find any good solution related to it.

Wwansvc service is not start. Whenever I try to manually start it, it always give me Access denied error.

So far, I have reinstalled the software and drivers. They are up to date. I checked the permission in registry for wwansvc and it looks fine. All the dependencies of wwansvc is working correctly. I even checked their permission as well and looked fine.

this service is logged in as Local Service account which I am sure has all the right permissions. And ofcourse I am trying to start the service with administrator account. I also tried to create another admin account just to see if that would work but it
didn't.

I have checked all the wan profiles which are not corrupted. I even checked the Program Data folder which looks fine as well.

Ran commands: Sfc /scannow , dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth as well - No luck with these

At this point, I am not sure what is the fix for this issue? Reinstalling will be the last option but I really want to find the fix

Thanks

Hello everyone. I am in dire need of assistance, please.

My computer has recently lost wi-fi/router abilities, from research it appears to be the Diagnostic Policy Service that is the culprit. I have tried every fix imaginable, to no avail:

1. I get the Error Code 5: Access Denied when attempting to manually restart from the Services menu.

2. I have edited the regedit parameters in other recommendations to the HKEY.

3. I have run Windows Fixit Troubleshooter.

4. I have run Tweaking.

NOTHING works. I am out of options. Could it possibly be a hardware/component issue? The system in question is several years old, and used heavily.

I have no other avenues except a full system wipe, and with the age of the terminal I am not even sure that would solve it.

I would be eternally grateful for any options.

Nagash.

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section - noob in this forum

System: Win 7 Ultimate x64 on an HP Pavilion DV6. My account is the only proper user account on the laptop and is an admin account.

In short, when trying to do a system restore, it come up with an error that the Volume Shadow Copy Service was not working, though that error code is irrelevant for the purposes of this question as I later managed to run system restore in safe mode from an age old restore point...

When checking services.msc (run as admin), VSS was off and was on manual. Changed it to automatic and then when I tried clicking start, the following error came up:

Windows could not start the Volume Shadow Copy service on Local Computer.
Error 5: Access is denied.

I have since tried everything I can possibly think of (including setting it back and forth between manual & auto) to get the service to start, to no avail. Solutions tried so far:

- net start vss in elevated cmd - returns the same error (error 5 access is denied)
- vssvc.exe in elevated cmd - same
- changed permissions to full control for myself, admin group and NETWORK SERVICE (which I had to add) for System32 folder and for vssvc.exe but no change
- changed permissions to full control for myself, admin group and NETWORK SERVICE (which I again had to add) for VSS in regedit (opened as admin) still nothing

Just writing an update to say I managed to solve the problem by turning off my AV completely before starting the service and it worked (I obviously changed it back to manual once it started)!

Annoyingly, I had actually already tried this before by turning off individual components of my AV at a time (eg firewall), but for some reason had overlooked trying to turn the whole thing off...

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea what in the AV (KIS 2015) would be blocking VSS from starting suddenly (I haven't changed any of its settings from before the issue arose)?
