I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Apparently corrupted files?I am having problems opening .doc and .xls and .jpg files in some (but not all) folders in my folder tree, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\My Documents\Folder X. However, Folders Y and Z are apparently unaffected. This has arisen only recently. My system is Windows XP (Home), and SP2 upgraded to SP3.MSWORD EXAMPLE:- On opening a Word file (whether from Word or from Windows Explorer) I receive this dialog box;"File Conversion - (filename).doc""Select the encoding that makes your document readable." Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Hi Qujibo,
First comment you said ran ccleaner REGISTRY cleaner, this is not advised, unless you know what your doing

If there is an UNDO backup from that utility RUN it.

There are a lot of Winsxs errors in your log.

So, I reformatted my computer again. Did some SFC scans before I installed any Microsoft updates and all scans were clean. Did all the updates, drivers, program installations. Couple days later I decide to check with SFC and found some errors. There's also errors at the source, meaning I can't replace them correct? This seems kind of stupid. Always having corrupted files no matter how many times I reformat.

Hi. Two days ago, I transfered a large amount of files, mostly music, from an external hardrive onto my laptop. Today, I noticed an error message shown with a triangle next to the clock on my screen saying "aolload.exe - Corrupt File." I ignored this, and later got this message for various other programs. I finally decided to try running chkdsk through the command prompt, and then I got a "Corrupt File" message for this program.

This is very bothersome, is there anything I can do?

A:Corrupted Files, Chkdsk Also Corrupted.

If you have access to a Windows XP CD, boot from the disk and choose the option to use Recovery Console by pressing R
Choose your windows installation (if more than one listed)
Enter your Administrator account password. This is not necessarily the same password you use to login. If you do not know the password for this account, try pressing ENTER (i.e. Use a blank password)

Run CHKDSK from the command prompt.

N.B. Disconnect all external hard drives\flash drives before booting from the CD, as they often get labelled C: over your hard drive.

Hi tonedef -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

I just has a big issue with my computer at home and I had to backed everything up into a usb to make a clean install
now the usb shows the same three files in pretty much all folders and I can't erase them and I can't see the rest of the files that are supposed to be in those folders....

I've been trying to change attibutes but id doesn't let me...
now another weird thing is that one folder... apparently the first one in the tree with the issue, shows two "." and ".." folders...

I try to run chkdsk but I'm not sure under what option... and in every single folder it that those three files appear it says something like the first allocation unit is not valid and that the entry will be truncated.

Please help... I would really like to recover all my newborn pictures

A:corrupted files same three files in all folders, can't del

Always do backups, and always do some type of check later to see if the backuped data actually backed-up.

Sounds like the USB is kinda fried. They recommend that when you pull it from the computer, you're supposed to go down to the "safe uninstall" icon on the task bar on the right side first. Sometimes I don't bother. I would just put the computer to sleep for 5 secs, and remove the USB while it's asleep.

Did you already perform the clean install? If not, then the people at the major electronics chain- Tech service department can try to fish out the data for you. I would say the same thing for the USB, but IMO, there is less hope for that option.

Use the info in link below to trouble shoot and repair. You may want to first eliminate malware as the problem.
Boot Critical File Is Corrupt: Fix For Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1

To eliminate malware as the cause of the problem:
Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.
If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.
After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.

DO NOT bump your new topic. Wait for a response from one of the Team Members.

This happens to all software installed after I changed my start orb using resource hacker and my desktop icons. Any clue why this happened? I tried repair install but it was still the same so I was looking at everything that might be related. I noticed that "C:\Users\[ Name]\AppData\Local\Temp\{973ACF68-9D5F-4552-A1F5-FCD41CDAC91C}\" should be the Use Source and instead "AppData\Local\Temp\" folder is empty.Things I had done on that day:*I used "Take Ownership" on the entire Windows folder*I ran CCleaner's registry cleaner after changing start orb with resource hacker*I changed desktop and superbar icons*Installed Photoshop- But I repair installed so those shouldn't be related, right?I know you can use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to fix it but the problem will come back the next time you repair/install/uninstall it.

Using registry cleaners is not a very good idea, they delete keys that should not be deleted and cause more problems then they are worth. Here's a suggestion, hopefully these will help.Check system restore to see if you can roll your computer back the before you made this change. (hopefully you did make a restore point, if not lesson learned, always back up your system before initiating tweaks such as this!)Go to this link for Windows 7, hopefully it will correct any issues you have. http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/sandbox...S%2Fdefault.htmClick accept and allow the scanner to install and run and hopefully it will fix everything. Its worth a shot.If not, then go to the command prompt and type SFC /SCANNOWKeep your Windows 7 DVD handy in case it is needed.Good luck and keep us posted.

I have no idea how to fix these corrupt files

A:sfc - corrupted files but could not fix them.

The sfc scan, you need to run in an elevated command prompt and may have to run it 3 times with reboots in between each time. What error message did you get when you ran the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ? If you got the message that it couldn't locate the source, you need to mount the ISO file, or put the installation media in and look in the sources file for either the install.wim or install.esd, whichever you have. Then, for instance if your ISO or media was assigned the drive letter D and you find you have an install.wim, for example run the command
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess
Or, if you find you have an install.esd run the command

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:D:\Sources\Install.esd:1 /limitaccess

I am trying to find out how to, if there is such a way, to repair corrupted text, rtf, and doc files. The files were all created on another computer, another operating system, with older office programs, etc. An example of what my documents look like now:
’]P• Aˆb• hH54%ž!d<”PM‹‡ ƒPBJ!† Ei•C'kyœ?&#Hr_•DO2Ps-’x’†ŸGcd˜hQ…€
<siU=P7BHRk=”NhPc^!=jJy-|
and so on. There are dozens of my files that look like this now, and many of them I spent many long hours compiling originally.
Does anyone have any idea of how to get back the original data on these files, or know of a software program that might actually work at restoring the original data?
I'd very much appreciate any help on this. Many of these files were for a book I have been writing for several years.
Thank you.

If you can tell us what OS and what program was used, what OS and programs you are using now AND (if you don't mind) attach a whole example - preferably rtf and not too large.

We might be able to tell from the document structure what is going on.

In the meantime, don't try playing with any of them.

Hopefully someone can help me out here

I have two HD on my system. An 80GB and a 200GB. My 80GB was partitioned into three sections. Since I was running out of room on the system portion I wanted to reformat it and start over. I moved the "My Documents" folder with all my good stuff on it folder over to my 200GB and reinstalled windows XP etc on the 80GB. Got windows running (eventually) but the folder that i moved over to the 200gb was not reconizable after i did all this. I rebooted and chk disk ran automatically. It found all these files and said something to the effect of "Restoring Orpahned files to folder 41258 etc etc". It ran through this for about 1/2 hr. After it finished booting I was able to see all the files and folders on the 200GB. The problem is now, that some of them dont work and some of them do. Also changed the 80GB from FAT32 to NTFS.

Can anyone help me?

A:How To Fix Corrupted Files

Thanks for the advice on this one. I was afraid of that. I tried a few data recover software programs. Recovermyfiles found some of the old stuff on my C drive but the same items were corrupted. Odd. I read on Microsoft that excel has a repair add-in that supposedly will fix damaged files. My other problem there is that the office CD I have has a huge scratch in that I didnt notice until after I started this whole thing. Woe is me. I tried XLS regenerator too and it couldnt fix them, but it was only the trial version. I got a copy of office coming, I will try their utility then. If that doesnt work, I have learned a valuable lesson I suppose.

When I start my computer I keep getting corrupt file popups from ntuser.dat.log-I am told to run chkdsk utility which I do on Command Prompt-but then I'm told: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". This is very annoying. I am not a computer techie but would like to find a simple solution. (The pop ups are usually winword.exe and ctfmon.exe-if I try to delete them I'm told they are unable to be deleted) This started a couple months ago. Can You possibly advise a solution. Many thanks in advance.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Bleeping Computer" button to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop.

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.

Click the "Clean" button, then allow the cleaning process to finish.

When it's finished, click "OK" each time it appears.

The computer will restart.

Save the log that appears after the computer restarts.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

I have quite a few EFS files on my XP PRO PC. and all the sudden now they are corrupted and are now no longer working or readable Ect.

I've also noticed that in the past few days my PC had been randomly freezing for no apparent reason.. and i had to do a few Forced Shutdowns.. could that have caused those EFS Files to have been corrupted or what..

Is there any hope left to get those EFS files back-repaired or am i SOL..??
What can i do , what are my options to fix this situation im in..??

A:EFS Files Have Been Corrupted?

See if this helps for EFS files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329741

As for the random freezes, check the Event Viewer for Errors that correspond with the time of the freeze:
Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Event Viewe> Do this same thing on each System and Apps log:
Click to open the log> right click on Error> Properties> click on Copy button below the down arrow on the right> Paste in Wordpad or here (Ctrl V)

Ignore Warnings and paste only one copy of a recurring Error. That might provide enough information to find cause of freeze. I don't know at this point whether there is an relation to the EFS files.

Are you having any problems with Windows in general? The "System File Checker" command there won't fix everything but minor problems with a system file or two damaged or missing.

For more involved problems with Windows a repair install or full fresh install may be required to correct the more severe problems. If this is an install just seen lately that went on incomplete a full a clean install would be a thought to clean things up. Or if you created a system image when 7 first went on you could restore that.

I've run thorugh a number of posts here on this subject and most seem to be related to files corrupted due to damaged disks. However, I have not seen my particular problem as yet.

I've a problem with regard to video files (avi) which took a turn for the worse yesterday.

At times, something would attach to a particular folder which would make it "in use by another program" which I could normally resolve with "unlocker" or just moving the files to a new folder.

However, recently, when I tried to open certain video files, they would hang my player and would not open. Moving and/or copying them to another folder or drive did not help. I finally wiped my system (which needed it anyway) only to find that the problem continued. It now seems these files are "corrupted" because they will not play on any other media.

I can tell easily which files are "corrupted" because those files do not show anything in the "duration" folder.

Any suggestions?

I just got this problem where windows search does not function (I do not have cortana, using dutch windows). So i thaught i could fix it with SFC /scannow. But with this scan came the message

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix someof them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios."

The results are found here. But i do not understand them enough to see what the problem is, and how i can fix it. So I hope you guys are able to give me some advice on how to fix those corrupted files and hopefully so fix my windows search.

I searched the internet for some advice, there i found this command "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" But this did not work, asked for a image source.

To summon up:
What should i do to fix my corrupted files and fix my windows search (Restarting search.exe in the task manager did nothing)

A:SFC can't fix corrupted files

Use this method when your sfc /scannow reports corrupt files found but unable to repair :

In the same Command Prompt (Admin) windows, copy and paste this command...........

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
Again it will take some time.
When finished, it will give you a report.

If your dism report " Source files could not be found ", don't panic. There is a solution for that.
Just post back.

I'm running Quattro Pro under Windows 98 SE. I attempted to save a file in Excel format, but the new file contained no text. Now, whenever I attempt to open the source file, it makes me try to open it as a copy. Then I receive an error message:

Error reading a file: {filename}

After clicking on the OK button, I immediately receive the error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

And then Quattro Pro closes.
I can't delete the file or delete copies. I believe the computer thinks that the file is in use even when it's not. How can I correct the problem? Is there any way to delete the file?

There are many things that can corrupt files on a drive:

Hard drive age
Quality
Usage
Viruses and other malware

and the list goes on.

As for what can happen, picture files, MP3s, documents etc shouldn't have much impact. They just won't open, or will partially work. As for DLL and executable files...well, that depends on what other files require them to work.

I recently had a laptop shut down because the power outlet pin was broken and I didn't know it. The shop was able to take out the H.D. and I was able to copy over to an external drive all the important docs, pics, music, video etc.

HOWEVER, now I cannot backup to CD any of the files on the external. They all appear to be "OK" - I have opened pictures, opened excel files etc.

I would just like to get a backup copy of what we put on the external but it fails and says there are "too many errors". Any ideas on how to fix this.

On another thread, I had a problem getting a cloned SSD to boot, but finally did by running Windows 8 Mgr on the original SSD and then recloning. But running sfc /scannow on the cloned drive, it's returning the message that Wondows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I found another thread on that subject from a year ago that suggested running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and then sfc in admin mode.
