Q: A Full time Mechanical Design Engineer having an axiety of purchasing thinkpad x1 extreme

Hi all, on previous days of researching, i was very interested in purchasing x1 extreme. As i do need to run solidworks ans NX unigraphics for my full time jobs and as well as my freelance job.but during the weekend i do play some decent games to relax myself. So i found thinkpad extreme to be very suitable for me. HOWEVER, when looking at people complaining in the forums and some user who posted thier problems in youtube, i hasitate to purchase this machine. I am well aware of x1 extreme release on last year. I hope to get a genuine opinion from x1 extreme user..... Is the product stable now? is the laptop save to purchase now? Would you still recommend me to purchase this laptop? Is the hardware and software flaws really that terrible? Please describe your experience with it.. if not i would find another alternative (if you have recommendations on that, please point it out for me.) Many thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Just purchased a P53, have a few questions (Mechanical Engineer)

Fellow ME here. I work in the AEC industry and my work loads benefit the most from a few fast CPU cores. Autocad, for example, was optimal on up to 8 cores, and the user consensus was that you could get by with a decent gaming GPU (as opposed to an expensive workstation version). As I remember (and I haven't touched ANSYS and Matlab in more than 10 years), what you're using is very heavily bound by the CPU. Puget Systems has some Solidworks benchmarks that may highlight this. I got the Core i7 9850H with the Quadro T2000 and 32 GB RAM (16 GB from the factory, bought a matching stick and installed it myself afterwards) and two NVME SSDs (but my projects are on an external HDD, so these don't help as much). I'm satisfied with my decision. Back in August, when I ordered the laptop, there weren't any options for custom configurations. I would have liked the Xeon paired with the T2000, but it doesn't seem like this is an option even now. The 8 core i9 seemed very appealing, but I had to remind myself time and again that:- Turbo is no substitute for base clock, as much as the marketing hype says otherwise- I don't need as many cores (I upgraded from a 2c/4t Core i7 with a 2.8 GHz base clock and a 3.2 GHz turbo, and the actual speed in single threaded loads is not that different)- The price was better (paid for it myself), and the difference went into accessories (dock, cooling pad, RAM, additional USB hub, new carrying case). I'm not sure how much of a benefit the RTX5000... Hi, I need to purchase a new laptop for my studies and general use. I?m a graphic design student and use Adobe Creative Cloud; mainly InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and occasionally Premiere Pro (least used/mainly personal use).

As I?m on a budget I am looking at the below laptops (most refurbished):

- HP 15 db0089au 15.6? AMD Ryzen 3 2200U Dual core 8GB 128GB SSD + 1T HDD Win10 Home 64-bit

- Dell Latitude E7470 Display 14" Processor Intel i5-6300U 2.40GHz Memory 8GB Storage 256GB M.2 SSD Optical Drive Win10 Pro 64bit

- Acer Aspire A5 15.6? Intel i5 8265U 8GB 1TB HDD Win10 64-bit

- HP Pavilion 15-cc060wm 15.6" Touchscreen Intel i7-7500U 12GB 1TB HDD Win10Home 64bit

- Lenovo IdeaPad 15.6? Intel i5 7200U 8GB 1TB HDD Win10 64-bit

- HP Pavillion 14-BK091 14? Intel i5-7200U 8GB 1T HDD Win10 Home 64-bit

I?m really after advice on which one to get, or if they are all on par with each other. I plan on connecting to a larger screen when using it at home. I?ve looked at reviews but I?m really struggling to make a decision.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, My (nightmare) story so far: I purchased 6 months ago a X1 Extreme 20MF000X (i7 8750H - 32 GB RAM - 1 TB SSD). From day one, I noticed that I had very bad wifi signal (at 2,4Ghz band). More specifically, when I was in my office, which is in a room about 15 meters away from the server room (where the router is located), I had very slow internet speeds, so slow that I couldn?t even browse normally. On the contrary, I never had such a problem with any other Thinkpad of our company or even my iPhone, when using the same wifi network. The distance is not so far to justify the massive drop in internet and download speeds (I had normal speeds only when I was near the router). Moreover, from such a distance, I couldn?t even connect to the 5Ghz band. Taking several tests using Speedtest.net, I had the following results (in a 50 download / 5 upload line):Thinkpad T530: Download: 40Mbps, Upload: 4.5MbpsThinkpad L580: Download: 35Mbps, Upload: 4MbpsThinkpad X1C (Gen 6): Download: 35Mbps, Upload: 4MbpsMacbook pro 13 (2014): Download: 45Mbps, Upload: 4.5MbpsIphone X: Download: 40Mbps, Upload: 4 MbpsThinkpad X1E: Download: 4Mbps (!!!), Upload: 4Mbps! The only way to achieve download speeds of 40Mbps was to move the laptop near the router (at the same room)! I tested the above laptops to other networks, other routers and other places, but X1E always presented the same bad wifi signal when I was far from the router (but not so far to justify this). I tried EV... Read more

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

When I click on my downloads folder, which is stored on the WD drive, it takes a while to build up what is stored in the folder. I have been using Avast AV Free for years. Never really had any problems until a few weeks ago. My computer was trashed! I tried running scans from Avast and MalwareBytes and both came up empty-handed!
So...I tried until I gave up. I copied all my pics, documents and videos to flash drives and did a complete restore on my computer.
This time I am going to buy Kaspersky because I have read, it is the best in preventing and removing.
A quick question...Newegg has Kaspersky AV and a separate Kaspersky Internet Security package. Should I buy one or both???

A:Solved: Purchasing AV for the first time

It depends on which operating system you're running. With the later ones the Windows firewall is sufficient so you can just purchase the anti-virus product rather than the suite, which includes a firewall.

BTW, even if you want the firewall you don't need to buy both, the Kaspersky Internet Security is a suite that includes both ant-virus and firewall.

Back in August of 2016, I purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 for taking notes in lectures. I became very unhappy with it very quickly and resorted to buying a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga (1st gen). I fell in love with this machine at first sight. Great specs, decent price, yadda yadda. The pen capability is near perfect and I now have all my hand-written notes organized neatly on a cloud service for convenient viewing at anytime.  About 9 months into the warranty, I soon noticed these white spots appearing on the screen. About the same time, i noticed the pen was becoming very inaccurate when trying to write on the screen. This didn't really seem like a mishap to me, so I consulted Lenovo Customer Service about honoring the warranty and replacing the screen. They were phenomenal! I shipped the laptop and within a week the repair was finished and the laptop on its way back to me.  Now, about 9 months later, the same "white spots" are starting to show again. The pen accuracy is again starting to dwindle and it's becoming extremely frustrating that a >$1,500 laptop is failing so quickly. This laptop is made to write on. They've done a great job in designing the retractable keyboard, but made one huge mistake in designing the functionality of tablet mode. There are two rubber feet on the bottom of the 1st gen and, consequently, there is a small gap between the back of the screen and the bottom of the laptop when the machine is in tablet mode. Ov... Hello, Just a remark to Lenovo design team as I see one design flaw about the hinges on ThinkPads, even from past generations.I am not sure why but the hinges were set like for the other brands, making possible the lid to touch the table which the laptop is on, when we try to open the lid flat.See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qcLuqPskns Before, like the T430u which I still own, the hinges were not set like now, and we could really open the lid 180. Can the future laptops take that remark into consideration?  Thanks

But in my new P50, battery is moved to the bottom right corner, resting it under ones right palm when we use it. Hi,  Long time Thinkpad user since T420.  Currently a T460s is my daily-driver.  I've been very brand loyal.  One of the things that makes me happiest about Thinkpads is their easy-to-service design. But they keep getting thinner, and thus, less servicable. First went the CPU socket, then the 2.5" HDD slot.  Now on the T490s they've removed the RJ-45 socket, SD card slot, and soldered all the RAM on the MB (!) Was looking at the Dell latitude 7490 which looks quite comparable to the T490s but with all the things I like still intact - has anybody who's a big Thinkpad fan tried it?  What did you like / not like in comparison to the Thinkpad? Thanks

Initially even after installing all the updates, the computer was running rather sluggish and slow compared to my previous 2 year old Asus Laptop, in terms of scrolling through webpages, pdf and responsiveness. Now I've reinstalled Windows 10, some of the sluggishness is gone but on Google Drive and Chrome I still find that it is slower compared to my previous laptop.  Do I have a defective unit? I purchased an X1 Extreme (4K) a few months ago. I have run into a few issues and was hoping I could get some advice. For reference, I have observed these issues across multiple different Windows versions, GeForce driver versions, and Lenovo BiOS versions. I am happy to answer any follow-up questions in the comments. 1.When I have hybrid graphics enabled, I have observed significant stutter when scrolling in applications such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and more, especially when opening PDFs in Chrome. Turning off hybrid graphics resolves fixes this, but I was wondering if there was another option I had other than compromising my battery life by disabling hybrid graphics.2.When I keep the TrackPoint enabled, it occasionally begins moving the cursor on its own and keeps going for a few seconds, with no apparent way to regain control until it stops. While I can fix this by just turning off the TrackPoint, I enjoy using it and would like to know if there is a different solution to this issue. Thank you in advance!

Hi I bought a X1 Extreme last week and it's driving me nuts already. The notebook simply does not charge. When I plug-in the power adapter, Windows says that the power supply is plugged-in. But the battery status doesn't change, in both ways (it's not charging but also not discharging). It just stays at the current charging status for hours. I also have Lenovo dockingstation "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 170W" and it's the same problem. After a research on the internet, I found the following article which actually helps, but only for a single charge. But as soon as I unplug the power supply again, I have to reboot again, turn of the battery in the BIOS and reconnect the power supply again. https://stebalien.com/blog/fix-for-lenovo-x1-carbon-not-charging/ The drivers are all up to date (installed via Lenovo System Update application). Does anybody suffer from this issue aswell? Thanks for your help!

The screen needs 5s to go from black (with the power button led still flashing) to login screen and from there it takes another 5s to activate biometrics (fingerprint and Windows Hello), verify identity and then enter desktop.Word and Excel need 2s to open (wich is 1s more than a 4 years old ASUS laptop I was using before, with way worse specs).Matlab R2106a requires an outstanding 40s to open, while on an old MacBook Pro only needs 15s. VirtualBox needs 7s to open and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS from VirtualBox took nearly 1 full minute to show the login screen. Plugging the AC cable does make some difference, however not so much for heavy software like Matlab (30s with AC). And all this was with max performance mode setted within Windows and also Lenovo Vantage utility software.  I don't think it's something hardware related, since Cinebench is giving me 1365 cb with Windows increased battery mode and 2178 cb with AC plugged in and max performance mode. I just received my new Thinkpad Extreme laptop with 4k screen a few days ago. I'm formerly a Macbook Pro user and I love the Thinkpad Extreme. However, I'm shocked to see that my real-world battery life usage is 4hrs and 40mins. Especially when they advertise the battery life to be 14 hrs! My power mode is set to "Better Battery", screen brightness at about 80% and I'm the only doing web browsing and some youtube videos. Not even video rendering or editing. This is a massive deal-breaker for me. I was hopping for about 6 hours at least. Can any other Thinkpad Extreme user with 4k monitor advise if this is normal? How much battery life do you get? I checked with support but they refuse to tell me what the average battery life I should be expecting and just say that battery life will vary with usage. I found this review online which says they got 6 hours 7mins of continuous wifi web surfing: https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-extreme Again, I feel quite a let down because the the specs say up to 14 hours. I was expecting even at half of that I was hoping to get about 7 hours. But about 4+ hours is really bad - its almost the same as my 7 year old Macbook Pro which I switched from.

Hi, So I have U2515H monitors connected with USB-C to HDMI cable, HDMI on monitor end, USB-C on X1 Extreme (windows 10) Same cable (usb-c > hdmi) AND same monitor is working with another computer with Linux and USB-C and with Phones over USB-C, no problems. With X1 Extreme, It only Blinks windows Desktop for a Second and then Its gone no signal.. It was working somehow at one time and sometimes it didnt, now It wont stay on anymore at all, just blinks for a sec. At work with another monitor I had problems too with USB-C, but somehow It is working now, weird thing is that this monitor and cable is totally fine with other devices.

My thinkpad extreme gen 1 shows "plugged in, not charging", the battery level just remain the same (not charging up, not dropping down), what is going on? I got the laptop a few days ago and it was working just fine. The battery charge threshold had been turned off.
