Preferred Solution: Change Desktop Icon to Clear Font

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I need to know how to change the font color from white to black. I clicked on personlize then went to windows color and apperance then Icon but the color change was grayed out. Anyone that knows a work around I really need it. Right now the font color is white but the background I want to use is light which makes the fonts type hard to read when it is white. Changing to black would make all the difference in the world.

Hi Ron,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I do not think you can unless you switch to the Windows Classic color scheme.

This might work as an alternative for you though. In the Visual Effects Performance Options, check Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop. This should help make them easier to see.

This should be easy but I've found several instructions to the right page-- but the font box is greyed out.

The font size is ok but I want to make it look more like old XP which means light blue background with white
font lettering on the desktop. The default goes to black text for light background-- I already found that out.

Years ago I did this on another job but can't remember how to get around what Win7 _wants_ to do.

With this is mind is there any summary screen of what changes have been made?. As said, the usual
setup screen allows me to change b/g color but font is greyed out.

Go to Control Panel > Personalization > Desktop Background and click "Change background color" which is text (doesn't show up as a link) at the buttom right corner of that screen.. There you should pick a white background if you want black text and black background to get white text..

I have been faced with a bit of a dilemna. One one hand, I love to use Windows Dreamscene. On the other hand, however, I hate what it does to the fonts on my desktop icons.

See the picture.

I'm curious as to how I get those set so they're not clear like that.
I've tried going into CP>Personalize>Widows Color and Appearance>Advanced to set it to a regular color, but it disabled the ability to choose a color.
And so, I am curious if there is a registry fix for this or not.
Or a fix of any sort, for that matter. Anything would really help a lot, thank you.

I'm afraid that's not possible because white/light backgrounds will have black/dark text and the other way around but only if you don't use shadows under text. By using shadows under text, text will always be white.

Is there another path for me to get to Performance Options, where I can then uncheck "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop"

Here is my question; Is there a way to set up a different desktop icon/fonts size to match the TV and the laptop? (perhaps different profile settings???) Meaning, when I disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV, I want the size of the icons/fonts go back to default/small size icons and vice versa .

Hope this question makes sense.

I can't think of anything that exist within windows. It wasn't necessarily designed to be used on 40" LCD from 10' away in the way you are using it. That's why Windows Media Center's fonts are so much bigger.

Per this Topic here on 7F: dual monitor text is different sizes between screens you're out of luck.

Under Window Color and Appearance in Personalize (right click on desktop), you should see a Open classic appearance properties line toward the bottom. Click on that and then on Advanced and you should then be able to make font changes there. The panel that comes up is just like XP if you're familiar with that. Its just more well-hidden in Vista.

Good day.

I wish to know if there is a way to change the font size/style (bold, etc.) of the icon labels ONLY on the desktop screen.

I've tried the Control Panel method (Appearance & Personalization -> Display) that allows me to change the fonts for 'ICONS'. However, this option also changes the appearance of fonts in the directories/filenames, which is not what I want.

E.g. Labels on the desktop with size 12 and bold. Fonts in folders: size 9 and UNbolded (default style).

Anyone have a solution for this?

I can change a lot of things using the appearances tabs, but I can't change the Desktop Font Size.

The "normal" way to do this that Win7 provides is to change the DPI from 100% to 125, 150 or custom. HOWEVER, doing that causes some programs to not work correctly. For instance Titan Quest, and I've heard in comments on gaming forums that other games sometimes have the same problem. Changing DPI in Win7 causes the cursors to not work properly in many full-screen games and apps. Changing DPI back to 100% requires a reboot, which is a pain.

SO... Is there any way, some registry tweak, perhaps, that will allow me to change the desktop font to a larger size?

Right now, I'm having to resort to switching back and forth from 800x600 screen resolution when I can't read some things. On a widescreen monitor, that's a shameful waste of monitor space. It seems there should be an easier way to do this.

Hi all, I just installed WIn8.1 Prox64 and I'm facing the following issue. Well, the answer is, I get caught up in details. I have been searching all through the regedit, and can't find where the color for the font is edited. I like my Desktop to be white with clean and legible black font.....but Win7 wouldn't let me do that. So here's how I made it do it:

Note: I think I started out this process with the High Contrast #1 background theme loaded?.so maybe you should also start out with that theme before following the instructions below.

1. Type ?visual effects? into the search bar (upper right of screen) at the Control Panel.
1a. On the page which appears, click on the link to ?Adjust the Appearance and Performance of Windows.? Towards the bottom of the dropdown list on this page, UNCHECK ?Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop?

2. Take any existing Windows theme (located at: ?C:/Windows/Web/Wallpaper?) and save it (use SAVE AS) to some other place on your computer with a different name. Make sure you save it as a .JPG pic. I renamed mine ?img100.jpg? (since all other pre-installed theme pics have some other similar name with a value less than ?100?).

3. Using Photoshop (what I used) or Windows Paint or some other similar graphics editing program, open the file you SAVED AS in Step 2.
3a. Using crop (or some other method) delete all of the image from the theme so that all you have is just a plain white background picture. Depending on your graphics editor, you may be able to clear the entire picture by doing Ctrl+A (select all) and then hitting your Delete key.
3b. Save the all-white background theme you just made to ?C:/Windows/Web/Wallpaper?.

Hello I am new here and need a little help

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and when I click start then click on my user name all personal files come up however "Desktop" has a standard icon instead of the Vista default icon

I right click on it hit properties but there is no customize tab so I tried to edit the desktop.ini file it is currently:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

Nothing still the standard folder icon so I think for some reason it is flagged as a system file when it should be flagged as non-system file

I also tried right clicking the desktop -> personalize hit change desktop icon highlight my user name click restore defaults hit apply then then ok and nothing

I did reboot my PC after making all of the above changes

If I could get it back to the default icon that would be great thanks

I have researched until I am blue in the face and not found out how to do this.

We are getting ready to have house guests, and I have created an account for them to use. I would like to create a desktop shortcut icon which is roughly double the size of the other icons to draw attention to it. The target file will be a basic readme with a couple of short rules for using my computer.

If I cannot find a way to create the single larger icon, I will resort to another idea I have in mind. That idea is to type the rules in Word and use Snipping Tool to capture the text and use the resulting image as a desktop background.
