T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

Q: T580 with Transcend m.2 2242 ssd compatible issue

HI, Everyone I just bought my first T580 and got a Transcend MTS-400 128GB M.2 2242 ssd to do a custom upgrade my self. After carefuly watch the Lenovo tutorial video on Youtube, I installed the ssd on the 2nd PCIe slot. After boot into the Bios, the Bios couldn't detect the new ssd. Updated the Bios to the newest version and still no luck. So I spend some time searching online and found the following post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T470-unable-to-detect-M-2-SSD-2242-after... It looks like some compatibility issue with certain brand of m.2 2242 SSD. I wonder if that's the case for my new T580? Does Lenovo ever comes out with a list of m.2 ssd that their Thinkpad is compatible with?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,I have a new T470 sitting here. I'd like to use a 2242 SSD (128 or 256GB) in the WWAN slot to run my system off, and also - as a separate data drive - use a 2.5" SSD that I have in my current work laptop .Are there any official recommendations, or a positive experiences as to which 2242 drives are compatible with the T470? I know there have been issues with the T450 and 460, so I'm reluctant to just buy one to realize it doesn't work. Thanks,Michael

Transcend StoreJet 250: plugs into USB ports,

Tried the transcend software, it can't backup all the files it says many files are too large

I used to use XXClone, it expired won't update

Tried Reflect it can't find the drive I have says I need a drive, "please upgrade to the paid version" - If I was a rich person I would not be worried about all this. I am poor, I can't even buy food at the end of the month.

Is there ANY free software that can clone in any way my disk to keep me from losing everything like the last time my hard drive crashed which does not require a genius or massive expert to run?

I'm experiencing an issue with intermittent shutdowns on my new T580 (20L9) with the Ultra Docking Station (40AJ). The issue appears to derive from the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver, as I typically see a corresponding error (DPTF Event ID 256 - Unhandled Exception) in Event Viewer, the details for which I'm including below. I'm running Windows 10 x64 1803 (Build 17134.81). It appears that certain CPU/GPU-intensive tasks will tip the driver to immediately put the system in sleep mode, so not technically a full system shutdown. Most recently, I attempted to restore a browser session in Chrome after an OS restart, opening a number of browser windows w/ multiple tabs each, which triggered the issue. Over the course of my daily use, it will happen anywhere from one to five times, and it's extremely annoying. I have not experienced the issue with the system undocked, however, my computer is docked about 90% of the time I'm using the machine, and I did recently update to Win 10 1803, which could be part of the problem (?) I am using **all** of the latest drivers available on Lenovo's site, including that for the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework, version 8.3.10207.5567 as of the time of this post. A:Random sleeps on T580 w/ Ultra Docking Station - Intel Thermal Framework issue

Did you ever get this resolved?  I have a user with the exact same symptoms, but we haven't done a lot of testing off the dock yet.  We've updated to the latest Intel Thermal Framework drivers from Lenovo (Just came out on 6/8) but that didn't help.  Updated to the latest drivers from Intel, no better.  Tried dock firmware, nothing.  Lenovo came out and replaced the system board - no better.  We push a clean corporate image to ALL machines, include a few hundred Thinkpads we have out there, and this is the only one exhibiting this behavior (Also the only T580 we have out there so far, everything else is T480.)  Lenovo wants their image back on it before we do anything else, which is tough because the user is a few hundred miles away.

Can anyone confirm that a M.2 2242 SATA drive can be used as a 2nd drive in the WWAN slot of a T460P (purchased in the USA)?? Can either the original drive or the M.2 drive be used as the boot drive? Which is preferable? If I install a M.2 drive would it effect the warranty?? Thanks!

I just bought a second SSD (Transcend 256GB MTS400 M2 2242) for my Lenovo T480 but it is not recognized in the BIOS nor Windows. The laptop came with a 512 GB M2 2280 SSD. When I plug the same SSD in my old E540, it works straight away. The old 16GB SDD from the E540 also does not work in the T480. I read this was also an issue with the T470 until a BIOS upgrade. Did anybody have the same issue or could Lenovo check this issue?

Hello and welcome,

The SSD you list is a SATA device.  The WWAN/SSD slot is described in the base spec as PCIe - and doesn't mention SATA.  It may be that SATA devices are not supported in that slot.

I don't have one to try, but there is a slot for a WWAN card or a 2242 M.2 SSD that is easy to access.  Remove the big cover and it is visible.  If you lay the machine down with the memory slots and the HDD toward you, it is above the HDD, to the left of the CPU.  The other thinkpads of that generation (T440, T540, W540) will all boot fine from the drive.

Hi. I've just received my T460s and a Transcend 2242 512GB SSD card, but unfortunatelly this ThinkPad doesn't detect the SSD at all. I'm disappointed because I was sure I read somewhere that it was technically possible to do that on the WWAN M2 slot, but now there are other reports telling it's not working. My question is: is this a hardware limitation or is it possible that a BIOS update can enable SSD support on the 2242 slot? This would be ideal to me so that I can have Windows 10 and Linux with dual boot, without sacrificing storage. Thank you.

I have a Dell Studio XPS 435MT. Typically I unplug the unit during storms. The last couple of times I did so, I noticed the pc didn't want to start up after replugging it in. Now it won't start up at all. Just get a flashing amber button light. The fan will flicker on with the light.
So I figure I need a new psu and order this from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339012. On the mb, I need an 8-pin plug for processor power (#30 on attachment) and the new psu only has a 4-pin plug (which does fit into half of the 8-pin plug). Can I run the mb with just this 4-pin plug or is there a danger in trying this? Thanks.

Hi there,
I have got an issue with a custom USB 2.0 device (with our own firmware) regarding enumeration and driver installation in windows 7 using USB 3.0.
The devices uses the BOS descriptor (OS 1.0) to provide a compatible ID (RNDIS) for selecting the appropriate inf file / driver (rndiscmp.inf / rndiscmp6.sys). This works fine in Windows 7 using USB 2.0 and also in Windows 8 using USB 3.0 or 2.0 (on many
different installations). But it does not work in Windows 7 using USB 3.0. Neither using intel nor renesas USB 3.0 driver stack. Analyzing USB traffic I can observe that the Descriptor is requested from the device. Hereupon the compatible ID is sent to the
PC but it can not be found in registry and hence it is not used to select the driver automatically (evaluating setupapi.dev). The driver must be chosen manually then.

Actually the USB requests are the same as in the USB 2.0 case but something goes wrong using USB 3.0.

Does anybody have any idea? Or any additional debugging possibility?
Thank you very much!
Martin

Hello, sorry for posting these basic questions but I've done some research and I want to make sure that I make the right decision when buying a new T580. I've been out of the loop in tech for a few years now, and I'm just learning now about hardware BIOS whitelists, etc. I want to buy the most basic T580 model and make sure I can upgrade certain components later on when I have the money available to do so.  1) Can I upgrade the basic model with the i5-8250u / 4GB RAM to 16GB of RAM later on? PSREF says yes, up to 32GB, and I've watched videos that say there are two slots for RAM available. Just want to make sure there is not any limitation and that I can upgrade later on to at least 16GB. 2)I already have a Samsung SSD - SATA III 2.5 inch. Since this model has a 2.5 drive I assume I can replace it with mine. But am I limiting myself in anyway for future updates if I don't get one of the NVME drives now? 3) I would possibly like to get the WWAN card later on. Is it possible to buy and add one later on?  4) Will this computer run dual 4k external monitors, should I ever get them?  Since money is very tight, my only priority right now would be to get the stuff I cannot add later on (3840 x 2160 screen, possibly graphics card but would have to bump up to 8350u).  Thanks!

Force power off by pressing and holding the power button. Second attempt: Power On; Hit Enter at Lenovo splash screen; Hit F1 at Startup Interupt Menu; to eter the BIOS Setup. Disable secure boot (Security > Secure Boot). Save (F10); repeat first attempt. Same result. Third attempt: as before except that I additionally set Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot to Both and tried again. Same result. Fourth attmpt: as before except that I changed the boot priority to put legacy first. Same result. Fifth attempt: as before except that I set  Startup > UEFI/Legacy Boot  to Legacy Only. Same result. The USB stick has Grub on it and boots Linux distributions. Hello- this is my first post to the Lenovo community forums. I just received a brand-new T580, custom ordered directly from Lenovo. If it matters, this was supposed to have a 500GB spinning disk and 16GB SSD (Intel Optane PCIe). Windows 10 was the only option for pre-installed OS (Professional, in this case). This new machine will not boot and has yet to boot. I received it on a Friday afternoon. Once I unboxed and charged it and tried to boot, tech support conveniently closed for the whole weekend. I opened a ticket in Lenovo's MTSA (yet another account to open), with no response. Now I am turning to the forums. I installed the battery and charged it, then attempted to boot. My first attempt resulted in INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, then rebooted. The same thing happened again, then started "Automatic Repair" Automatic Repair (a/k/a Startup Repair) did nothing, probably because there is no existing image to revert to or older version of Windows to fall back on. I get the following errors: "System Restore: To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore." (Of course, that does not happen-this is a brand-new laptop) Then "Re-image Your Computer: An internal error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error: STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x80070002)" (Good luck!) I ran all the Lenovo diagnostics, and they all pass with flying colors. I'm about to order a T580 today and I see there is a choice of "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear". Does anyone own the 48Wh battery for the T580 (or T570) so that they can confirm if the 48Wh batter sticks out at all? I want a battery that does not raise the laptop. Also where can I buy a second (spare) battery that is exactly the same as the "6cell Battery 48Wh Rear" and "3cell Battery 24Wh Rear"? Are there any accurate pictures of the 6cell 48Wh battery online someone can send me a link to? Thanks in advance. My first post!

A:Battery for T580 (T570)

Take a look at the parts list website.  It has pictures too.  Sort by rechargeable batteries on the left side check box. https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Also here is a video of the 6 cell i found on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhOKGcf56-c

Hello everyone,I'm planning to buy my first Thinkpad, probably a 8th gen Intel processor one. I read this on the T580 specifications sheet : "System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage" but that doesn't seem clear to me.I found here someone else who as the exact same, unfortunately unanswered, question :System has one HDD slot or one M.2 2280 slot exclusively for storage. Why I cannot use it with dual drive setup. One fast but low capacity PCIe NVMe ssd on the M.2 slot and another high capacity hard drive on the regular 2.5" HDD bay. Why one or another but not both? I couldn't find a simple and clear answer to that question

Brand new T580 (20L9) and feel like I have had batter problems from the start. I have updated all there is to update to try to solve the problem but now have hit a dead end. Battery 1 currently says 0% and not charging and does not recognize it anymore I think.  Where do I go from here? I have looked around and seen other models with similar problems but nothing seems to come to a clear conlcusion on how to solve this.

Please advise if Lenovo can deliver T580 with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional as out of box delivery so save several tinkering hours at user's garage. It had been tremendous performance issues with T570 with Windows 10 resource hog experience. I would not prefer to run Windows 10 again on T580 - high performance machine hogged by Windows 10. If Lenovo could pre-install downgrade option out of the box that would save several hours of research by end users, T580 with Windows 7 would perform more stable and solid provided if they have enabled all the drivers to function properly.  This has been hugely frustrating experiencing to deal with T570 machine running Windows-10 Pro, I had to dump the machine. I dont have much confidence to run T580 on windows 10 pro, it would not even match T520 machine ( 7 years old machine) running on Windows -10. Looking forward for the solution, request Lenovo team to enable Downgrade option as part of the customization to save users's time and stable user experience. If Lenovo Does not deliver out of the box, first thing to do after the machine is to wipe out Windows 10 to install, Please let us know if the drivers available or I would be placing a ticket to go through 100 steps to get it done.  Thank you,Mamba.

I'm thinking of buying a T580. The teardown videos show a card type M.2 solid state drive in place. Will my 2.5" Samsung 850 Pro 2TB SSD fit? Will I need an adapter?
