explorer crashes and restarts when I am in the picture file

Q: explorer crashes and restarts when I am in the picture file

HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer,and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. Internet Explorer kept closing and restarting everytime I tried to upload. So I went to firefox, same problem, then to chrome, same problem. Finally I decided to just go to the video on my computer and show it to someone, I went into the picture folder, and then Explorer closed and restarted. It happens all the time, where I can't even get to open a file. I ran the SFC and got a SFC detail sheet. I think some file is corrupted. Can someone help me? I am going to post the SFC details so someone can give me a starting point to work on this. Thanks
SFC details:

Preferred Solution: explorer crashes and restarts when I am in the picture file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you play the file on the camera? It looks like the files you copied over from the camera are corrupted. Delete the ones you have and try to save the files from the camera again. Make sure the file plays on your computer before deleting off of the camera, or uploading to YouTube.

Hi everyone,

I wasn't quite sure where to post this as I don't know what exactly the problem is.

Recently, my computer started crashing while watching video for prolonged periods of time, be it youtube or media center, streaming video online, etc.

The computer would go to a blue screen that said "windows encountered an error and shut down to prevent damage to the PC." It would automatically restart, but with no picture on the screen whatsoever. I would have to turn the computer off by holding the power button and unless I waited hours to turn it back on, there would be no video.

It's now gotten to the point where the computer crashes after being on for more than a couple minutes, regardless of whether I'm watching video or not.

I thought it might be the GPU, so I took the graphics card out and plugged the monitor directly into the motherboard, with no luck. No picture at all when I turned the computer on this morning, even with no GPU.

When the GPU was still connected, I couldn't keep the PC on long enough to open the program that would give me the GPU temperature to see if it was overheating.

Any thoughts?

A:Computer crashes and restarts with no picture

the GPU is an old geforce GT 220, the card itself is only a year old.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

I use Internet Explorer 7 at home (along with FF and Chrome - but the wife likes IE) and I have ran across a bug that has stumped me. When I right click on an image and select "Save Picture As," IE will completely shut down. I get the Windows Explorer box asking where to save the file but before I can do anything, IE shuts down. Sometimes I will get the error box "IE needs to close" but more often than not, it just closes. I have searched and the solution that made the most sense, "Starting IE in No-Add On Mode" did not help. Still crashed. Any ideas? I did see lots of not very helpful, non-responses like "You should use Opera or FF" or "You still use IE?" Those "answers" are just Microsoft haters..... BTW - I did try to right click to save an MP3 file using "Save Target As" which still used Windows Explorer box but could save the file and it didn't crash, so there didn't seem to be a problem between Internet Explorer and Windows ExplorerI went to eventvwr.msc and found this. Looks like the issue might be libavcodec.dll. I renamed the two instances to libavcodec.dl_, restarted but still have the issue. Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). Here is the problem

Under my wifes user name she has a lot of pictures saved in her my picture folder. Every time we try and access that folder the computer will completely lock up. You can't click on anything, and ctl+alt+delete does not work either. The only option at this point is to reboot the computer. This happens 100% of the time when you try and access that picture folder. There are no other files that I know of stored in that folder. Here is what we have tried so far:

-We have tried rebooting in safe mode. This did not work. Same issue, computer froze and had to restart
-We tried moving the picture folder to a different user name and opening it up there. Did not work, had to restart
-We've tried using paint, photoshop etc to open files and it would work for a while, but then would freeze up again.

I've asked around and they said I had a corrupted file so I'm wondering if that is in fact the case, and if so what are the steps to remove it?

A:Computer crashes due to corrupted picture file

The thing to do is identify the corrupted file. I would use paint and open each file and save it elsewhere. And if paint crashes, then that probably is the corrupted one. It's tedious, but I can't think of a better method.

Hello,

So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

Hello,

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options ... Read more

I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?
Thanks

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hello,

Explorer intermittently crashes for some reason and it gets annoying. This is not Windows Internet Explorer, it is Windows Explorer. I'll be copying or moving files typically, or dbl click on a movie or picture file to launch it. It pops up a dialog saying explorer needs to be restarted. When I clik on it it restarts the desktop. What could be causing this?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

This issue has been driving me nuts for the past few months and I've found no solution as yet.

Windows explorer (windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64 bit OS) will frequently crash with seemingly no pattern (opening directories, scrolling through files, copying files etc) even when running in safe mode. I've tried various malware applications and hard drive
checks, but to no avail.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

How long has this been going on? You may want to try a system restore.

You may also want to do a repair install.

I cannot click on Windows File Explorer in my task bar or start menu. No error, just a spinning circle and then my icons disappear and come back immediately.

Windows key + E does nothing. Literally, nothing.

If I use other programs to view file in original location, I can sometimes get it open. I can also get it open if I type c: in the search box. However, if I use these methods and dare to right-click, it immediately crashes.

Google search gives me other people posting this issue, with no real fix.

I can create and delete folders through an MSDOS window but Explorer crashes when I try through it's interface or through an application's interface (ie File, Open, Create Folder icon). So recently I've been suffering some Windows Explorer crashes.

Unlike the average hang this one will stay grayed out for about 5 to 10 seconds, my screen will go black for about half a second and than everything will be back to normal. I am thinking that this could be a virus but i have run a scan 2 times and nothing showed up. Other than the file explorer not working everything is fine. This is really weird since it only started yesterday and i have never had any issues like this in the 4 years that i have had my computer.

Hello,

i have not found any solution for this even though there seem to be several similar postings before, so here goes. All this happens on Win2k before and after installing SP4.

Whenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though. Couldnt find where to manipulate registry. Any input on this one very welcome.

Btw, i can right click on folders. Just not on files. wierd, isnt it? 8^)

Hi,

I have a Dell D830 running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. This PC was running Vista and Windows 7 was installed as an upgrade in December.

I was suspicious about some search results not turning up documents that should be indexed and when I try and look at the indexing options/advanced/file types the index application crashes. The same thing happens when I try and look at default settings/file types.

So far I have performed a registry clean using Advanced Uninstaller Pro, performed a Windows repair, installed SP1, and turned off all non-Microsoft third party extensions. I just performed a full virus scan with Symantic using the most recent virus file definitions. It did find trogen.gen2, which was removed. I ran two spyware applications (malwarebytes and Superantispyware) and found no issues. I ran the SFC /scannow utility, which found no issues. I tried to set the default program to internet explorer as well as the Windows Search Explorer. I booted in safemode and default programs utility does not work at all. I created a new user and the new user has the same problem. I removed all items from the index locations and file types still crashes the index options utility.

It looks like a security access error but I am running as administrator. Could this be a registry issue?

I have attached both error messages and a mini dump file.

Regards,
Mike
