factory reset and Windows Product Key

Q: factory reset and Windows Product Key

Hello,
I want to perform a factory reset on Dell Inspiron M511R that came with Win7 preinstalled. Do I need Windows Product Key?
The CoA label is sticked on the bottom of the laptop and after years of usage it just became unreadable. The computer is functioning normally so far.
Can I get the WPK somehow? (The same or a new one.)
Thank you.

Preferred Solution: factory reset and Windows Product Key

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: factory reset and Windows Product Key

You can do a clean install of Windows 10, as long as the system has been activated with Win 10 and has it digital license. Just skip past where they ask for a license key.
Doing a factory reset over a newer OS may be a problem. Are you wanting to do that because you need some of the OEM utilities? It is usually best to do clean installs, especially when changing OSes..
I will assume the system was not using a UEFI bios which means the license in not there. Some third party software may be able to retrieve a key but I have no experience. If you have OEM recovery media, it might work, maybe someone else will know for sure.

Hello, its really been a while since i factory reset my Alienware x51 R2. I did this so that everything would be wiped from my hard drive there for i would have more disk space. Everything went as planned. However after reinstalling Windows 8.1 with the disc that came with my new pc, i realized that i needed to activate windows. I didn't have this problem when installing windows for the first time. Is there any way i can get my product key from dell or Microsoft? or would i have to go buy windows?

Hi, Did you upgrade to Windows 10 before ? If yes, you can install Windows 10 now using the following instructions:               https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10 During the installation process, skip the step to enter key. Windows 10 will activate when you come online. Note: You have to install same version of Windows 10 before. Regards.

I just did a factory reset using the HP Recovery Manager (which takes you to the Windows Recovery Environment, from where you do a Reset). Then I noticed the Windows version info on the desktop, and checking Control Panel / System verified that Windows is not activated. Details claimed that the product key has been blocked. I then used a utility to read the product key from the motherboard. It matched the partial key windows reported, but I put it in in its entirety as a new key and ran activation, but again it failed, for the same reason. The utility also listed an "original" product key, whatever that is, but that too failed, again for the same reason. I tried updating the BIOS, thinking that might be the problem, but it did nothing. I also spent time on the phone with MS, but after verifying the key is blocked, they said this is an HP problem. Currently I'm stuck with a unit that will not activate Win8. Very strange. Evidently I'm not the only one this has happened to. There must be a solution, right? Please help. Thank you. BTW, the windows error code is 0xC004C003

So I installed Windows 8 whenever it came out and then updated to 8.1 last fall. Since then my computer has become bogged down and running really bad. It's time just start fresh but when I go in to the PC settings to restore it, it says I don't have the necessary files and that I need to insert a disc. Since I installed 8.1 from the store I have no disc to restore it from.

I saw some tutorials on activating 8.1 from 8 but I don't even know if I'm following the right ones or not. I'm not sure what I'm doing. This was much easier to do in Windows 7. But anyways, I would really appreciate any help on overcoming this so I can restore my computer.

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8
System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8 (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.
or
You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

I bought my Pavillion in 2014 and of course it came with Windows 8.1. I've upgraded it to windows 10 for about a year. I'm still a student and I want to use purley for school work. Problem is I have lots of junk on it like games that I no longer need. I thought of a lot of things to speed it up as it is painfully slow such as an SSD upgrade, but that is a bit pricey. The only thing I could think of is reset it so it doesn't have loads of rubbish running in the backround becuase the disk is always running at 100% usage (even at idle). So I was thinking, if i reset it to factory settings, will it keep windows 10 on it or will it degrade back to windows 8.1? Many thanks

I have been given a touchsmart 310 running windows 10, I Can not  install or change anything because I am not logged in as the administrator but I cannot find the account to log in to  matter what I try so I think my best option is to do a factory reset, but I dont know if  will I need the windows key. Has anyone everdone this reset & did you need your windows key & am I going to be able to do the reset without being logged in as the administrator.

Hi, There are many HP Touchsmart 310, it must be HP touchsmart 310-something such as         http://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c02622055 I don't think it has Windows 10 pre-installed and you may not be able to do factory restore because you need Admin password which you don't have. My suggestion: clear everything and install fresh Windows 10 1. Create Windows 10 installation media using the following instructions      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10 2. Use the media to install Windows 10 to your machine, skip the step to enter the product key and continue, 3. Go online and Windows 10 will automatically activate using the key in the BIOS. Please note: you must install Windows 10 version/edition which is on the machine now, you can't change to other version/edition (ie can't change from Home to Pro for example. Regards.

A:Need to know how to do a factory reset in windows 7?

It's doable through tutorials on this site IF your PC has the capability. Some do, some don't.

But a few questions:

Have you made one or more "recovery" discs, by burning to a CD or DVD?

If you have not made recovery disks, your PC may or may not have a recovery partition that will allow you to restore to the state in which the PC left the factory.

Are you familiar with Windows Disk Management?

Does your PC have a sticker on it with a 25 character "Product Key"? If it does, you should be able to do a fresh install of Windows that you may prefer to a "factory reset", depending on your preferences. Many people don't like the configuration from the factory and would prefer a custom setup. Maybe you would. Maybe not.

I have an HP ENVY 700 that has been having many issues over a long period of time. It most recently got so bad that it would not start. After calling HP support and purchasing a "Smart Friends" membership, they told me that there was most likely some corrupted files in my booting system that stopped it from rebooting. After almost a month of attempting to fix the issue, HP sent me 5 "System Recovery" discs to factory reset my entire hard drive. I was first unable to back-up any of my files that were on the computer (because, again, it won't start up to where I can remove them and also the recovery manager won't work either) and now, after many late nights and hours on call with HP, the recovery manager cannot even factory reset my computer. I make it through 4 full discs before reaching 70% progress on the 5th disc where I get an error message. It reads "Recovery Manager could not restore your computer using the factory image. Please contact HP support. Error code: 0xe0ef0003" (Those are all zeros by the way.) I have called the support, or "smart friends" back and they said that it was either an issue with the discs (which were completely new and barely out of the package) or a hardware problem unlike they had originally believed. I hope somebody here can point me in the right direction before I am forced to buy yet another membership for the separate tech support specifically for hardware. Thank you for your feedback!!!

Hello, I have an older (2007 ish) ASUS laptop that has Windows 7 installed.  It is rarely used so I'm not in the market for a new laptop, but it is running extremely slow.  Will not download updates, etc.  There is some sort of conflict.

I'd like to wipe the whole thing clean but here's my dilemma.  Windows Office is installed but I don't have the installation CD's.  If I do a factory reset, is there any bare-bones types of word available for download?

Really Word (and IE/Firefox) are all the laptop is used for, so I didn't know if there was some bare bones "light" version of Word out there.  Alternatively, is there anything I can download from the laptop now and reinstall after the refresh?

I just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new version of Office.

Thanks!

A:Windows 7 and Factory Reset

What version of Office are you running? There are no bare-bones versions of Word unless you are talking about free programs that can open Office Documents. There are number of those including Kingsoft, Open Office, and Softmaker's Free Office.

Hi: If you previously had upgraded to W10 and it was successfully activated, you can go right back to W10 by using the Media creation tool at the link below and clean install W10. When you get to the window during the installation process where you are asked to input a product key, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and autumatically reactivate once you are connected to the internet. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 If you want to go back to W8.1, you will have to use the W8.1 recovery media you should have made when you first got the PC.

I have an msi laptop with windows 7. I have been experiencing some issues with it. Last night I tried to do a factory reset. The one where you press F3 during startup. Everything seemed like it was going great. The progress bar was moving along. It got all the way to the end and nothing happened. I left it alone overnight hoping it was just slow. This morning it's still displaying the progress bar and the elapsed time is still ticking away. Nothing has changed. I don't know what to do! To add to my sense of panic, there is a note on the top of the screen clearly stating to not touch any key while the reset is happening. Clearly the computer is trying to mess with my mind on purpose.

A:Windows 7 factory reset is stuck

A factory reset should never take more than a couple of hours if that. Obviously something is wrong. If you were having issues before the reset the failure could be due to a hardware issue such as a failing hard drive. You will need to stop the reset.

Do you have access to another computer? If  you do then download UBCD and burn the iso to a CD on a Windows 7 or later computer by right clicking the iso file and selecting Burn Disk Image. Boot UBCD and at the menu screen select HDD > Diagnosis. Scroll down to Seatools for Dos and do the short/long tests. If Seatools for DOS does not detect your drive then at the UBCD menu screen select Parted Magic. At the Parted Magic desktop select Disk Health. It could be called GsmartControl. Run the short and long tests. If they pass boot UBCD again and use Memtest86+ to run a memory test. Let it run for at least 6 passes and preferably overnight.

Long story short, I did a factory reset of the laptop, and everything went fine until I logged into the new User Profile I made for the computer, and not only was my max screen resolution not as high as it should've been (the maximum I can do right now is 1024x768) but the entire look of the computer, from Windows Internet Explorer to my Icons and Start menu look extremely dated, not at all what it looked like before the factory reset. I just need to know if there's some way to remedy this, and if anyone else has had this issue. I couldn't find anything about it on the internet. Hi.
I have a Toshiba Satellite a500-19x which is about 2 years old. I have had problems with factory reset on the laptop and would like some advice on what might be the problem.

I have done a factory reset on the laptop a few times and each time there was a problem, which I will do my best to explain. What happens is as follows -

Starts factory reset and all goes well. Asks for User Name, Keyboard Layout ect starts to install setup and then start up to a brand new homepage.Next it shuts down. Automatically boots up again, goes through this all again 'Installing setting for System Restore' and then shuts down, boots up and repeat and repeat.

It will do this for maybe 30 minutes before it stops. The computer will turn on and work fine after like factory new.

I brought it back to the shop and they said something about Windows was not installed properly on the laptop at the start and that is why it done it.

The hard drives crashed about a year ago and were replaced through the shop and all worked fine.

However now I would like to preform a factory reset just to spruce up the laptop but am afraid it will still have this problem.

Any help/suggestions or fixes would be appreciate and feel free to ask for more info in case I left anything out.

Thanks

A:Windows 7 Factory reset problem

How are you doing the system restore. Is it from a partition on the Hard Drive or through a set of recovery disks. If you are doing it from the hard drive and the drive was going bad this could have caused the problem. Also if a shop reinstalled the operating system they may not have put the recovery partition on the drive. In this case you would need recovery discs. If you do not have them, they can be ordered through the manufacturer.

Hi all,

Recently my computer has been encountering problems involving speed and whatnot, and I have found no method of fixing them. I have been looking to reset my PC, and went to do so through the built-in tool that is supplied on my ASUS laptop, by pressing F9 at startup. I chose to reset my PC, but it returned an error saying the recovery partition couldn't be found. So I went to do so through the PC settings, and it rebooted my computer and told me the reset failed. I checked and found the recovery partition using MiniTool Partition Wizard, so it still exists.

Apparently this is an error other ASUS users have found after updating to Windows 8.1. I don't know how to solve this problem, and figured I may as well reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 8 without all the ASUS bloatware and garbage. So I hunted for a Windows 8 ISO file, and failed. I've tried multiple methods. One involving using a product key to download Windows 8 to an ISO file through Microsoft's Windows 8 Setup, and that failed because the product key was OEM BIOS-based, and not retail.

So I'm stuck between two problems here:
I can either try and do a factory reset by somehow fixing the recovery partition through some miracle, or;With extreme luck find a Windows 8 Core ISO setup, and install that and refind the drivers for my PC.

Any help would be gladly appreciated for either. :/
PS: sorry for the overly-long sloppy post, it's really late and I'm too tired to think properly. Apologies for my stupidness.

So basically my computer has ceased to function on the latest windows 10 update, 100% disk usage is occurring at all times leaving the computer inoperable and I've found that reverting it to factory settings and not updating fixes that. Well the other night I clicked on update and shut down accidentally rather than sleep. I immediately went to factory reset it again and it finished and put me at the setup screen, at that point my power went out. Upon turning the computer back on it came up with the screen That shows the windows logo and has a loading circle, let this "load" for about 2 hours before shutting the damn thing off and rebooting. It takes me back to the same screen where I proceed to give it 8 hours, finally it takes me to a screen that says administrator and has another loading circle, I have now been on this screen for an additional 8 hours. I have no Idea what to do at this point, I have tried to reinstall windows from a DVD and from a USB but for some reason it tells me to insert actual boot media, I have tried multiple different win 7 and 10 isos on dvds and usbs and none will work. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I fear this os is slowly taking my sanity. Thanks.

I thought its gonna take long so I left it overnight and when I checked my laptop it shows me a bluescreen saying a critical error 0xc0000001 so I tried passing through that blue screen and I managed to get through it but when I wanted to restore factory settings using windows 8.1 every time it restarts to start the reset the blue screen appears again so it won't let me restore to factory settings so what I did I upgraded it again to windows 10 and restored it to factory settings, by the time the restore is finished it was on windows 10, I tried doing the factory reset again but It's still on windows 10. now my laptop is totally empty. when I got my laptop it has an alienware respawn, steam and other stuffs, now my laptop is like an ordinary laptop, no alienware softwares, I didn't do anything when I got my laptop so anything about the saving things on a CD I did not do that.

A:Restore my windows 7 to its factory reset

Hi

Please take a look at the bottom of your laptop and check whether there is a COA sticker like the below one.

If yes, you can use the key printed on that sticker to perform a clean installation. Please refer the detailed guide written by "gregrocker" for more info.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

The guide covers everything you need to know and includes download links for legal versions of Windows 7. Make sure to download the exact edition of Windows 7 image which will be printed on the sticker ( ie Pro means Professional ). After performing the clean install, use phone based activation as online activation is not supported for OEM installations.

Hi, I have recently done a factory reset on my computer due to lag in a game that I use to never lag. I went into the windows 8 settings and went under update and recovery and after it was done my computer was unbelievably slow, I have updated everything and I have done a full virus/malware scan with Malwarebytes pro and Avast. I tried SFC SCANNOW in CMD, uninstalled boatware, checked startup, cleans, defragment and I contacted Windows and I have to pay $90 for a one time use software thing which I don't have the money for at the moment. I even got agents from Windows to remotely control my PC but they all told me I have to buy this software for a "guaranteed" fix. Any help will be very appreciated

A:Vista/windows 7 Factory Reset.

Did this machine come with Vista installed and then you installed Windows 7?
If so then the Factory Recover to Vista was wiped out.

So, you will need to get a Vista recover CD from the OEM of the computer OR use the Windows 7 DVD that you upgraded with.

Hi Everyone, Teb here with my first post on the forum. I am hoping one of you have run into this problem and have a good solution. I downloaded files that I didn't want, and they have proven to be nothing but trouble. An example of one of the files is an extension call "PriceChop". To remove it I went to the control panel and uninstalled. Then I went into all of the web browsers on my computer, went into the settings, and removed the extensions. They appear to be removed until I restart my computer. I go back into Chrome, and the extension is still there. I decided to download a program called SpyHunter which is a malware remover. I ran the program about 8 times and it is still unable to find and remove the files. I searched and searched but have been unable to find a way to remove the unwanted extensions. It has gotten to the point where the virus removed my Norton anti virus security and is trying to log into windows by itself. My wife woke me up to tell me that my computer was "freaking out". Sure enough it was trying to log into windows. I would see a password being entered and then a log in attempt. I am at the point where I just wanted to factory reset. Well, jokes on me. I go into search and typed "reset". I choose to completely reset to factory settings. When it goes to start the process it tells me I have files missing and to insert media. I come to find out that after I upgraded to windows 8.1 via the windows store, I am now unable to factory reset. Something about ... Read more

A:Can't factory reset my windows 8 machine

If you could get your hands on a Windows 8.1 disk/USB then you can use that to boot into the advanced options and reset the PC. As most helpers and advisors on here would probably agree, resetting the PC should always be a last-ditch effort when all other options were exhausted. You could try visiting the malware removal forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/ and posting the logs requested to get help by a trained BC member.

Hi.
I read the sticky on Factory Reset which is very interesting.
As I have had a lot of problems with my old Vista machine lately I was
wondering about Factory Reset or Windows Reinstall.
I have the Recovery Disc that came with the machine 8 years ago.
As a novice I would very much appreciate member views on this topic.
Thanks.

A:Factory Reset or Windows Reinstall.

What is the make and model # of your computer?
Be sure to backup all personal files you want to keep to a USB HDD first.
Your computer probably has a Recovery Partition which you would access pressing a certain key at bootup. For many manufacturers that is the F11 key depending on make.
Or boot up off of your Recovery CD. Either option will wipe all personal files and installed programs and set the computer back to Factory Defaults like it came in the box. If neither of those options work, and you have a retail copy of Vista or Windows 7 disc you can boot from that disc and do a Clean install.

A:How do you factory reset a 2000 windows 10?

Hi,Have you upgraded to Windows 10 previously? If so, HP Recovery partition may not work most of the times. Please use HP Recovery USB that you should've created after first setup of this notebook, to factory reset.Else you may have to order HP Recovery USB from HP support directly or do a clean Install of Windows 10 Home using Microsoft windows media creation toolRegardsVisruth

I really need help on this. I can't seem to fine a solution anywhere
My hp probook 4530s came with windows 7 pro and i had it upgraded to windows 8 pro( i have the disk) then i downgraded back to windows 7 pro using the installation disk that came in with the laptop.
After the reinstall i downloaded the internet driver so i could go online and start doing the windows updates.
But after the reinstall, updates and such, i found that there's nothing on my laptop, like the softwares that should came in with my laptop like the very first time i use my laptop. So i thought of doing a factory reset.

Here's the problem, i know for my laptop to do a factory reset is by pressing F11 on start up but when i do so, it asked me to put an windows installation disk with an error code (see below)
I have the HP_RECOVERY(E: HP_TOOLS(F: and SYSTEM (D: files.
I have the windows installation disk and a Application and Drivers Recovery DVD that came in with my laptop.

Please help me, i've been trying to fix this for a few days now.

ps: on the disk management it says that i'm still missing a few drivers, but i can't go on the HP download page for some reason so i can't get the drivers that is missing.

Here's the message after pressing F11 on start up:
Boot Manager:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then cl... Read more

unfortunately; this sounds to me like something may have corrupted the boot manager when you tried to downgrade to windows 7. If you have the windows 7 disk; i would try running it off the windows disk and doing a repair. Also; you might want to refer to the following link which will give more in depth detail on how to troubleshoot this:

Going to say right off that I have very little knowledge on computers, so I probably won't understand any complex solutions. Hopefully it won't have to come to that.

My mom factory reset her computer as a last resort after we couldn't fix the multitude of problems it had, but after the reset completed, Windows refused to install back onto the system. Originally we had been getting a message that Windows 7 was not compatible with her laptop (which is store bought Acer, not custom-built). However, prior to the reset we had been running Windows 7 just fine. This message, which included an error code, only showed up one time, and we haven't been able to get the error code since (unfortunately I never wrote it down).

Now when we try to start it, it says "setup is starting services." That operation fails, and we get a pop-up that says "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation." Clicking OK just makes the same message pop-up again, and no matter how many times we restart the installation, we just return back to this.

The only solution I've seen suggested in my research of the problem is to try reinstalling Windows via the OS installation disc. However, to my knowledge we have never had a disc to do this with, so that isn't an option for us.

Are there other solutions? My mom's schooling depends on having a working computer, so we're understandably freaking out.

Thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 Cannot Install After Factory Reset

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I would first try to recover your files this is a little complicated but there's a good video available
Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

Then after that I would just go ahead and prepare for the worst case and buy win-7 again from either Newegg or Amazon
If you know which bit 32 or 64 and 7 Home Premium or 7 Pro you had before ?
If not post the SNID and brand computer and we might be able to look it up on the manufactures website for you,
The SNID is a tag on usually the bottom of a laptop and or on the side of a desktop that also has the windows activation key on it = We do not need the Key just the SNID # it will tell everything about the machine you bought.
