Q: Computer wont turn on after plugging in charger into socket

My computer was on and i had the power cord in the top socket in my room and a extension cord in the socket below it. I had the monitor and phone chargers. I plugged in another phone charger that i was going to use with an xbox one controller to play with and the computer turned off and i saw a flash and the socket zapped. I smelt a gross burnt smell coming from something and i noticed a small hole in the power cord that i havent noticed before. The computer would not turn back on. I dont know what to do can someone help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I googled for some time and could find solutions without using screw drivers as this has built in battery. I got this laptop like a month ago. its working fine on day 1 but the following days, I cant turn it on without using charger even though the battery is 100% charged. When on battery, it wont turn on. Then I plug in the charger and tried to turn on but it wont start. The plug in light is on. And I would need to wait for around 30 minutes to try to turn on again. When turning on it would show something like this. Sometimes, the screen would blink in dark green and I can hear the starting up sound repeatedly but it just wont start. Anyone can help with solutions without the need to open the laptop as I have no clue to do that? Thanks in advance

Hi, I have a problem with windows XP. Everytime I turn off my computer by clicking on "turn off computer," I receive an error message popup that states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." After that pop-up message, the computer freezes for about a minute and goes back to its normal format (desktop) and the computer DOES NOT TURN OFF.

How do I turn off my computer without unplugging the computer? I try "ctrl+alt+del" to go to the windows task manager to "shut down" the computer but..the computer restarts again and doesnt turn off. Do I have a virus or a windows explorer problem? and how do i fix it? thank you

Hi I've been using my X220i for the last 3 years or so and decided to upgrade to an i7 X230 a few days ago. After a few days of no problems, using the same charger I've been using on my X220 (the 90w slim travel charger) I plugged it in to charge while the laptop was powered on. The laptop powered off instantly and now it will not power on again. There are no status lights visible and nothing happens when I plug it in. I have done all the steps of removing the battery and pressing the power button etc and on putting the battery back in the fingerprint sensor light was flickering orange - it is now back to no signs of life at all again other than the left side of the palmrest gets hot when I insert the battery. I am strongly suspecting a fault with the charger fried the motherboard when I plugged it in but am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions before i try to make a claim within my remaining 1 week of warranty. Thnaks

I live in an area with an irregular voltage supply and high probability of power surges. I have my XPS plugged into a ups unit and after I fully shut down the desktop I then unplug it from the UPS to avoid any risk of power surges. When I plug the computer back into the UPS, before I turn it on, it seems to power up temporarily - the power switch comes on and it makes some sound, then it goes off and it turns on fine when I switch it on.
Question is is this normal? I would have expected no activity at all when plugging the unit in.

Thanks

A:Plugging XPS900 into socket, should it come on temporarily before being switched on?

That is normal.  There is a wake setting and a setting in bios to turn on after power loss.  There is a flag in cmos where the system can tell if it was shut down or the power cord jerked out to get it off.
EPS12V systems are never truely OFF because 5V stanby is always on when the power supply has power coming in via  the plug.

The past few days, my laptop has been freezing after about 20 minutes (lately the amount of time has been decreasing to now about 15 minutes). First it would only freeze if it went idle but now it's freezing randomly. It would only freeze when I plug in my charger.

I replaced my adapter to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. I also tried changing my set up so that my computer wouldn't sleep but still, it would freeze. I also launched CCleaner to try and clean up my registry and though it did fix up some problems, yes once again, my laptop would freeze.

I installed several anti-virus/malware programs as well but none of them seemed to work. They wouldn't detect anything through quick scan but once I try full scan, it would freeze. I tried going into safe mode, but before making it in, my laptop would stop and go into regular mode. And just a few minutes ago, I got the blue screen of death.

Please help!

That means your display driver is not usable for windows 8 and windows 8.1. I would advise you to download and install Windows 7 display driver in compatibility mode and review if it helps.
There are few steps to set up window 7 display driver

Install & download display driver
Right click on the driver & go the properties
Select compatibility’ tab and test the box "Run this program in compatibility mode for” and click Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.
Finally click on button ”apply” then “ok” and run the file to install it

I was wondering if anyone is familiar with a method to enable sounds for when you plug in or remove a charger connected to your laptop. It is not a problem with my pc, but is an option that is not available for me which i would like to install to let me know if i accidentally unplugged the charger, particularly if I'm working on a full-screen feature. Any help would be appreciated.
I have Windows 7 home Premium 32-bit installed.

A:How to enable sound when plugging/unplugging charger for laptop.

In the System Sounds, there is an option for device connect or disconnect. This will probably do what you want. You will have to assign a sound for those functions.

The System Sounds panel can be accessed from Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sounds. Click on "Change System Sounds".

Hi, my new Acer V Nitro laptop makes a short, beep tone (coming from the speakers) when I plug and unplug the charger. I have read online that it is due to the driver and/or BIOS and I have done everything to disable it (installing new driver, searching for options in sound menu of Windows, going into the BIOS settings...). Finally, I have found the solution: deactivating the autostart of Realtek Audio driver on Windows start. Do you think that it is normal to hear this tone? I have completely reinstalled Windows and the tone finally reappeared (only after installing all updates). Thanks,

I recently bought a wireless 3G USB modem / hot spot. Although i use it primarily by plugging in my PC USB port, It just occurred to me that my smartphone charger also has a USB port. So i was wondering if i can use the modem by using the charger USB port or not. That way i will not have to keep my PC powered on all the time. My charger has a output rating of 5V and 830mA. I reckon there shouldn't be a problem but want to be sure lest i damage the modem.

Just noticed this whenever I plug or unplug the charger. The laptop lags for 1-2 seconds before returning to normal. This is noticeable when playing games or watching videos. Haven't seen any abnormal drops or spikes with the temperature of the CPU, GPU and HDD which would suggest a hardware issue. Tried doing this while running 3DBenchmark, and there is a huge drop in FPS, from 130-200fps down to almost 16fps esp. when unplugging the charger. Is this normal?

Hi All,I'd be pretty happy with yoga 3 pro if not one serious problem. It is very easy to break near it's power socket. Look at the photo. When you have it charging it is extremely easy to touch something with a power cord. Its long plug provides a lever, breaking its (metallic!) top keyboard surface doesn't require any force at all. In fact you don't notice it. If you place it on a table you should be careful not to let some book or even a thick pen to be put under a plug, otherwise it breaks the keyboard too. I broke it some time ago, lenovo service center took about 100 euro to fix it replacing the whole keyboard. And that very moment it was clear that breaking it again is virtually inevitable. You just can't think about this plug all the time. And indeed 6 months after it is broken again :-( I think for a device like this a magnetic charging plug is a necessity.

Computer won't start troubleshooting suggestions

Hi,
Try each one in this general order until problem is fixed:
1) check all your connections including your memory, power connectors, cards, fans and ensure the 4-pin connector for your CPU is installed if your system requires it. If you have removed your memory, make sure it is the correct slot(s). Not all slots work. I don't know if this will prevent the computer from trying to boot. At any rate, every motherboard manual details exactly how RAM should be installed for that particular board. If problem persists:
2) test the power connection with a lamp
3) make sure your on/off switch (if you have one) on your power supply is ON
4) remove the cables from ALL drives and restart
5) also remove unnecessary cards and non-cpu fans
6) Borrow a power supply (sufficient power and appropriate 20 or 24-pin connection)

I've seen this happen when a connector is improperly placed. The motherboard and/or power supply can detect an inappropriate power surge and not even start.
Some people have accidentally joined power connectors to each other, usually when hooking up system fans.

Your system can turn on and start booting to the BIOS with only the motherboard, a power supply and I assume some RAM (though I'm not positive the RAM is requied). It does not even need the monitor, although you obviously won't see what is happening but you will hear the power supply start. In general, with such a fault if the... Read more

A:Grr HELP!! My computer wont turn OFF

Cant shutdown?
When the power scheme is causing the problem:
In Windows XP, the "Always On" Power Scheme can cause some computers to hang at shutdown. To correct this setting, follow the steps below:
1. From the Start menu >Control Panel. Click Switch to Classic View.
2. Double-click Power Options. From the Power Schemes tab, in the "Power schemes" section, select Home/Office Desk or something other than always on.
3. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Shutdown hangs on "Saving your Settings" or "Windows is Shutting Down"

During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the “saving your settings” screen. During such a hang, there is no response to Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. The problem may be intermittent.

As a workaround you can attempt to disable the Windows Welcome Screen. This however, may not work in some cases.

System or hard drive corruption

1. Click Start > Run > Type cmd
2. At the Comand Prompt Windows type chkdsk /f.
3. If asked to schedule at reboot hit "Y" and hit "ENTER"
4. Reboot.

Power supply

1. The only remedy for a dud PSU is a new one. If you suspect this is the problem have it changed with a new one.

Hi there, and welcome to techspot.

The green LED on your motherboard should be on, regardless of whether or not your computer is on. It indicates that the motherboard is getting power. If it is not on, then your motherboard is not getting power.

Could be a number of reasons as to why this is happening.

1. Your PSU is dead.
2. Your PSU connections to the motherboard came loose (there are two of them, a 24 pin connection plus the additional ATX12v connection).
3. The switch on the back of your computer is in the wrong position (should be 110v for the US)

Check your PSU connections first. Hopefully something is just loose. Did you build this yourself?

Hi,
I had just installed a liquid cooling system on my computer. I checked it after a couple of hours and found that one of the connections wasnt water tight and there was a couple of drips on the graphics card. I took ou the LCS, the GPU and dried it out. It was all working fine then. I then proceeded to use my new computer and cracked vista with a timer stop crack. The os then downloaded updates and asked to restart which I allowed. However, when the computer restarted it would come on for about 2 seconds then turn off and do this again. This happened every time I turned the system on.
I stripped it down and checked the motherboard and processor, both seemed ok. I turned it on and it was coming back on so 1 by 1 I put the Ram, HDD etc etc back in. Everything seemed to be ok. I moved it back up to my computer room to check everything was really back working. BUT, when I started it up it wasn't POSTing again and there was a strange noise coming from it, like the hard drive spinning up, however the computer didn't turn off. There was no POST and when I plugged in the monitor and it wasn't picking it up. Can any1 advise me on what component's could be causing this or if the LCS dripping on my graphics card could break my mobo? All the capatitors on the mobo seem fine.

A:Computer wont turn on

water and electronics don't mix. That's why i don't recommend water-cooling. This is the risk you take. Some of your components have most likely shorted out. You will have to replace and swap out components until you have found the one(s) that have failed. good luck.

Now I tried turning it on and nothing, i hear the fans getting up to speed, then very anti-climactic, nothing. any ideas? i realize it could be anything. what are the symptoms of a blown cpu? i'd love some advice. thanks in advance.

I take it by "nothing" you mean the system stays on but nothing appears on your monitor? You are right in that the problem could be many things. However, power supply would be the first thing on the list and the CPU the last.

Good afternoon.
I have a Lenovo G570 laptop. I have installed windows 8 and it automatically updated. The thing however is that after a couple months I was typing a document and It told me that there wasn't enough memory to save even though there is nothing on it. I restarted and it reached to the folder that said Welcome and blinks, turns off and repeats this... I am without a Lap top since February. HELP

I just rebuilt my computer which I installed a new Power supply last night and for some reason its not turning on at all. Is a 115v power supply and I have a 125 volt power cord. Does that make any differnce?? All my cables are securly plugged in the right spot. I have a power sw little cable that connects to the motherboard along with other cables such as power led and HDD led. Does it matter when I connect them to the motherboard which way they are facing?? I really want my computer working today!!!!! Any adivse would be wonderful.

As for the case interface wires yes, it does matter which way they are facing so make sure that they are properly connected. The voltage rating of the power cord does not matter as long as you are running the psu on a standard 115v power source.

HEELP, my computer wont turn on

I have an HP slimline the really small pc's, like a month ago or so I had an energy power off, but I had my no break, which is really good, then when I was done using it i turneed it off, anyways wheen I trieed to turn it on again, it would't start so a couple of days later it turned back on, likee nothing happened, and for these last weeks this has been going on, sometimes it turns on sometimes it doesn't...The little green light on the back is on when it's plugged and off when it's unplugged, when I push thee power button it blinks once and if I keep pushing it, it sounds likee the computer is starting but the light on the front won't turn on at all, and if i stop pushing the sound stops and you can hear like your turning off thee computeer

p.s. Pls heelp mee!!! I really don't know that much about computers so...try to explain mee in the eeasiest way you can!!

A:Help, my computer wont turn on

I strongly expect this is due to hardware.

In reality, it could be anything from the PSU (Power Supply Unit) to RAM or motherboard. But i think it is a psu problem.

Put your hand over the rear PSU air exhaust vent. Is it cool or very warm?
If it's hot your PSU is undoubtedly running near its design limits.

Also, check to see that the cpu heatsink is seated properly. (Which is your cpu fan, and is quite big so you shouldn't miss it).
