wanted to call it D but the system suggested I call it E

Q: wanted to call it D but the system suggested I call it E

I just initialised my 1TB hard Drive (which is still empty) and wanted to call it D but the system suggested I call it E because other programs may wish to use the D that has been allocated to the Optical Drive.

So I left it at E.

Any particular reason why I can't go back in and change mechanical hard drive to D and the Optical Drive to E?

In passing, when I initialised the mechanical drive I set the Simple volume at less than the Basic figure shown and now have a tiny unallocated portion - do I just ignore it? (Never initialised before, so I guess it goes down to experience)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Aurondium,

If you like, you certainly could safely change the drive letters around on the DVD and HDD to what you wanted.

I've tried space sniffer as administrator, it says unaccessible 180 GB. I've run Sea Tools long generic and received a Pass. I've unhidden files and folders, unhidden protected files, there are 3 recycle bins showing on the external drive but all seem to be empty. There are also 2 folders named Found and Found 1 (if I remember the names correctly) these also seem to be empty.

I've run virus, malware & spybot scans and there are no problems there. Not long before this problem arose, I was typing something and one of the fingers of my left hand caught a key and a small message flashed on the screen but it didn't stay long enough to read it, I have no idea which key it was but it was in the lower left area of the keyboard around where the windows key is located, and, with typing so quickly I could have hit a key with my right hand at the same time and I'm wondering if this has done some weird system thing causing the space to become unaccessible.

TrustMe on Windows 8 Forum suggested trying Linux Mint Bootable but that didn't like the drive and seemed to go a bit berserk, I don't want to cause any damage so, not knowing anything about Linux, I didn't pursue that avenue. TrustMe suggested putting a post on here as " There is a hard drive guru on our sister site Windows 7 Forum. I would post your problem there and hope he picks it up".

Any help would be very much appreciated.

A:Call Out for the Hard Drive Guru as suggested by TrustMe on Win8 Forum

Not sure what your complaint is.

Is it that you don't understand what is taking up large amounts of space?

I assume this is an external drive and does NOT contain any Windows or operating system components?

TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs

Download and run the above tool to get an idea of what files are occupying large amounts of space--if that is the problem.

Maybe re-articulate the problem as directly and concisely as possible.

I assume the drive seems to be working well as far as you know?

On behalf of all affected customers, I request Dell to provide the affected customer necessary safeguards to help rebuild the customers trust on Dell by acknowledging their sufferings. I was playing CoDUO one day and tried to play a map which would not load because the game was reading the wrong files. I decided it was a great itea(at the time) to just go and delete all of my call of CoD/CoDUO files without uninstalling either first. After deleteing all files(or what I thought was all files) I tried to reinstall both games. When I insert the CD, the main title screen opens and gives me the options to play in single/multiplayer, or uninstall. if I click on uninstall, the uninstall wizard starts to open, then goes away with no affect. I found a post here on how to possible delete Cod and CoDUO from my computer, that post is here: http://forums.techguy.org/games/472741-uninstall-call-duty-help.html . I have followed the steps given by colmaca but to no success. I have tried searching in all hidden/non-hidden and all indexed/non-indexed places on all my drives to find anything related to Call of Duty, and get nothing. Is there anything else I should try? Please help, I would like to get back to my 'clan' on CoDUO

Now I can't access anything through my start menu--computer, control panel, documents, etc. Explorer.exe just come up saying "system call failed." Basically I can't get to any of my files/programs. I don't think I messed with anything I shouldn't have...a quick google reveals that I could have disabled my rpc net call service but I have no idea what that is.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

If you are looking to replace your system the Avaya (Lucent) Definity is excellant. Very pricey though. It will handle any configuration you can think of running. It is the same system used by HSN and the Federal Reserve. I've worked with Nortel, Siemens-Rolm and Fujitsu and the Lucent was the best of them although for cheaper money the Fujitsu 9600 isnt bad.

reposting from CoD4 forums.

So, I installed CoD4 a couple hours ago, and heres what happened.....

Everything worked fine. I logged in, played multiplayer some. I ranked up the 3rd time (forget rank) and when I did, the game froze.

I alt-tabbed, ended the process, and rebooted. Again I log in to multiplayer, and play another 90 min or so, with no problems.

After exiting out, I went to grab lunch. Came back, and nothing would respond on my comp. USB - mouse and keyboard were unresponsive.

I held my power button down to shut the comp off (only way) and heres where the fun started.

Logging back in, no error screens or messages or anything. It seemes to take a long time to boot up, 2-3x the normal start-up time. I get back into Windows (XP Media Center) and everything seels fine. Until I try to click something, anything.....

I try to start CoD4, and nothing happens. I try to start WoW, and nothing happens. I try to click the start button, and again, nothing happens. Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing, and by now, I can only move my mouse. Clicking and keyboard use has no effect.

Again, I power off. This time, I get a pretty blue screen, telling me one of my disks needs to be checked for consistancy. Fine, Ive had this before after crashes in the past, no big deal.

CHKDSK file verification completed.
CHKDSK indexes ...... freezes at 4% completed. I walked away for 15 min, and came back, still @ 4%.

Hello People. New to the forums here, I have an issue and i've searched but the search page didnt bring any results. and google wasn't much help either.

I always run batch processes with photoshop and on this new machine i recently built i get some "The data area passed to a system call is too small". I'm trying to determine if its the OS or Photoshop.

I have plenty of resources and i'm not sure what the issue is. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A:Error:The data area passed to a system call is too small

It's Custom_Resize.exe, one of the DLLs it uses, or some "inspection" software you've got on your machine which injects itself into the Custom_Resize.exe process - your antivirus for example.

The error message means that the OS has detected a disparity between what it is being asked to do (the "system call"), and the size of the area where that action is to take place. It's like walking into a bar and saying "I'd like a pint of beer in a half-pint glass!" If the OS were to accept the request, its actions would take it out of the data area supplied (the beer would overflow), and that might overwrite another app's data or even BSoD the machine. Hence, in order to protect itself and other apps' memory, the OS detects the disparity and throws that error.

Bugs in "inspection" software are the most frequent culprit for this sort of thing. The AV might have accidentally altered the type of request to the OS or supplied another area by mistake. Otherwise, it's possible that the app itself is buggy.

Try doing this in safe mode, if Custom_Resize will run there (I expect it gets invoked as a Photoshop filter and Im not sure whether Photoshop itself will function in safe mode). If it does work in safe mode, I'd uninstall the AV as the next test.

My Firefox browser was infected with malware that took the form of a voice message telling me .......

"Suspicious activity of intrusions detected which is trying to re-direct you to an attack site. This may happen due to obsolete virus protections. To fix, please call system support at (020)3805 0585 immediately. Please ensure you do not restart you computer to prevent data loss."

I was not born yesterday, so I did not call, I shut down my laptop, ran a boot time scan & restarted.

Unfortunately this had no effect & the annoying voice message continued so I uninstalled Firefox & used internet Explorer to download Chrome.

This has done the trick & the voice has gone but I am afraid that if I re-install Firefox, the problem will occur again at some point.

Any advice on how to avoid this malware, or a better solution than uninstalling Firefox?

Hello and welcome to BC,

It seems that you have some kind of adware similar to fake BSOD adware.

Let's do the complete check of your PC.

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

§  Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
§  If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
§  A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
§  If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
§  Do not reboot until instructed.
§  If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.
When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

I tried to check the event viewer but was told:
"Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running."

So I thought I'd start the service manually but received:
"Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local computer.
Error 1747: The authentication service is unknown."

So I tried to start IPsec but this time:
"Windows could not start the IPsec Policy Agent service on Local computer.
Error 10107: A system call that should never fail has failed."

So perhaps System Restore could put me right, but no
"No restore points have been created on your computer's system disk"

So I looked in System Properties and found that automatic restore points are enabled for the system disk. I then booted of the installation DVD and attempted to repair a computer unable to start, but was told that the PC would start. I then wished I had XP where I could just do a repair install and all my problems would be solved.

Hello,

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 600m with Windows XP, SP3.

I turned on my computer on Friday morning to find that my Network Connections windows was entirely blank - not showing that my local and wireless connection were broken, but rather not registering them at all. My local connection had been inactive for a while due to an internal issue, but I had resolved it the day before by purchasing and installing StarTech.com's USB 2.0 to 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter, which worked perfectly for one day until this problem arose (it may have been the first time that I restarted the computer after the adapter was installed - don't recall exactly - although I restarted the computer several times over the course of the installation process). I deleted and reinstalled all of my network drivers - for my broken ethernet connection, for the adapter, and for my wireless connection - but nothing changed.

Upon navigating my system, I discovered a litany of other problems with it:

* Whenever I booted up, my taskbar would be locked into the position where all that's visible is a thin line at the bottom of the screen (one step beyond the default). I worked around this problem by adding a toolbar, which caused the taskbar to expand, and then removing it, following which the taskbar stayed in place. The toolbar font looks different, perhaps somewhat similar to that of an old version of Windows.

* When I ran a Symantec quick scan, nothing came up. When I ran a full scan, ... Read more

Error 10107: A system call that should never fail has failed
Winsock Failure.

I have ran across this error twice. And it seems to be a bugger. It will disconnect your computer from the Internet by stopping or blocking the DHCP client or causing a failure in the Windows socket function.

Here is a simple and Low Tech resolution: System Restore.

When I 1st ran across this problem it took me the better half of a day to fix it.
The 2nd time it took me less than 10 minutes.

Restoring your system to an earlier date seems to repair the dis function of the Winsock which will automatically start your DHCP client which allows you to connect to the Internet.

I will say both times I ran across this issue were on Windows Vista. I have not seen this issue on Windows XP or Windows 7.

I hope this post helps anyone that has this issue.
Please note that you should create a system restore point at least once a month, start with the 1st time you turn it on.

Seems we finally have a solution thanks to user szz743 in
the other forum
Here goes:

"Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol" binary is \Windows\system32\DRIVERS\mslldp.sys
Its config registry key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MsLldp

During backup a VSS process running under NETWORK_SERVICE account calls cryptcatsvc!CSystemWriter::AddLegacyDriverFiles(), which enumerates all the drivers and tries opening each one of them. , The function fails on MSLLDP driver with "Access Denied"
error.

Turned out it fails because MSLLDP driver's security permissions do not allow NETWORK_SERVICE to access the driver.

The binary security descriptor for the driver is located here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MsLldp\Security

It should be modified, I used SC.EXE and Sysinternals' ACCESSCHK.EXE to fix it.

The original security descriptor looked like below:

>accesschk.exe -c mslldp
mslldp
  RW NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
  RW BUILTIN\Administrators
RW S-1-5-32-549       <- these are server operators
  R  NT SERVICE\NlaSvc

No service account is allowed to access MSLLDP driver

The security descriptor for the drivers that were processed successfully looked this way:

>accesschk.exe -c mup
mup
  RW NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
  RW BUILTIN\Administrators

I'm running nightly scheduled wbadmin commands to backup my system to an external USB hard drive. The commands include the
-vssFull to integrate them with the volume shadow copy service.
I'm seeing the following messages logged multiple times in the Application event log, though other indications are that the backup is healthy.  I'd rather not see error messages, but I'm not sure how to resolve this.

HI,

nice to meet you all.

My problem is my USB HDD unable to safely remove on Windows 7, I found that there is a process name call "System" is using it, thats what I get by a program call usb safely remove, I can't even force remove by using the program. Or is there any way to stop the "System" process to use my USB HDD??

I am sure that my system restore, paging file system, Recycle Bin and Indexing services are disabled for that drive.

Please forgive my noob english grammar, I hope that you all can understand what I mean.

Appreciate on helps!!!

A:USB HDD is locked by a process call "System"~~unable to safely remove

Another program is using your USB HDD through the System process. Make sure you close any open Windows Explorer windows and any dialogs that you've used to access that drive.

Download this free utility: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx
Once it's installed, right click on the System process and select Properties
Then select the Threads tab.

Let us know what stuff is running in the Threads tab.
Of particular interest is anything that's got running numbers in the different columns.
You only need the stuff in the Image Name column before the !, and there's no need to repeat each instance of a name (for example, you'll only have to list ntoskrnl.exe once).

Also, check the processes that show underneath the SYSTEM process (in my case it's smss.exe) for the same information.

Hi

Running Windows XP Pro SP3

I keep randomly getting this error.

I found some information from 2003 that would lead me to believe that what I have is like the W32.Blaster.Worm documented back then, but after running symantec's specific tool to get rid of Blaster I ended up finding nothing.

Also, I've run many Malwarebytes scans, Spybot Search and Destroy scans and iolo Anti Virus scans(I know it's not the best but others seem to clash with my System Mechanic because it's set to work with the iolo one) which all turn up nothing.
This has been bugging me for a few weeks now while I tried to find out what was going on when I had the free time to run these long scans. At the same time my services.exe and one of my svchost.exe files are always running at about 10% of my CPU each and it definitely seems related to the NT AUTHORITY RPC errors I'm getting now.
Help with this will be extremely appreciated.

A few weeks ago a techie friend tidied up my Vista laptop. Coincidentally a few days later, when I switched on my desktop (windows7) all my documents had disappeared. I reinstalled from a backup.
I do think this must be a coincidence.
However I now find that after working on the desktop for a while, clicking Start and then Control Panel or Computer result in a explorer.exe "System Failled Call" window appearing.
Restarting clears this but it happens again.
I have scanned with AVG & windows defender and also used the microsoft system scan tool. Nothing untoward showed up.
Attempted a system restore but no luck as it wouldn't work.
I ran Task manager, killed explorer.exe, went back into task manager, new task and typed "explorer.exe". This has worked for the moment.
Finally each time I close down I get the message programs are still running tho' none are listed. My only option is to force closedown. I feel these problems are all related.

Incidentally, when another user logged in their closedown was clean.
Very confused. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Clicking Start, Control panel/computer results in "System Call Failed"

I first would create a new Restore Point. Then I would go to MSCONFIG via WinKey--R and either disable some startup items or select Diagnostic Startup. If these stop the problem then focus on what is enabled in a full boot - including non-MS services on the Services tab of MSCONFIG.

I am not the most technologically literate person in the world. I hope I'm explaining this right. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

My laptop keeps freezing. I have a Dell, with a Windows Vista OS. I have McAfee virus protection software and when I run a virus scan, there are usually no detections.

I recently downloaded "glary" to do a registry clean (at the advice of someone else) and for a few hours, I thought that solved the problem. But my laptop is still freezing.

When I say freezing, I mean that it just stops; no response on anything I try to click/open. If I'm running a program, that program freezes. I've gotten into the habit of doing hard shut downs (holding down the power button til it powers off).

It was suggested that maybe my laptop's overheating, but I can hear the fan blowing...

Oh, and yesterday, I tried to do a system restore several times unsuccessfully...my system kept freezing up.

Again...any help or advice you can offer would be appreciated.

A:Not sure what to call it :(

Hi -

Remove McAfee - http://jcgriff2.com/A-V_Removal_Tool...e_Removal.html

Reboot after removal. Install MSE - http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Use compressed air to blow the dust out of fan vents. Spay on an angle and short bursts.

Do you have Vista SP2 installed?
START | Run | cmd | type ver

6.0.6002 = Vista SP2

Keep laptop elevated. Intake air vents are on the bottom.

Regards. . .

OK.. I got impaitent so I read alot of posts with the same search link redirect problems . And found most instruct to run: CCLEANER, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware, HJT and combofix.....

Well...

CCLEANER: is a fine program, but did not fix problem

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware: I downloaded and Installed but would not open. I tried changing name but could not.

HJT: gave me a log

Combofix: I read not to use unless instructed to do so... being impaitent I downloaded and ran the program following all the instructions I read. It found some problems that it automatically deleted, Rebooted searched some more and gave me a log. Then Rebooted.

Looked like it worked, links were fine, so I rebooted again (3 times after running combofix) and still good.

Ran HJT again compared logs and stuff is definitely gone...

Thanks for your help, I couldn't have done this without the replys to ALOT of the same questions...
AGAIN THANKS A MILLION

Hello everyone... first time post here, and I hope somebody out there will know what I'm talking about here.

Several years ago I read (heard? can't remember anymore) about a reg hack to 'secure' your IE start page. In short, it disables (grays out) the option of changing your start page in IE's control panel, and whatever's in there at the time is what it stays at, and it can't be hijacked.

Has anyone else heard of this? and if so, what is the hack and where does it go in the reg? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

A:not sure what to call this one...

Click Start>>>>> run and type in gpedit.msc. Click OK
Navigate to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer.

Choose Disable Changing Home page and click enabled then click apply and ok.

I am working on my little brothers computer for him. It is an HP Pavillion XT 868. Two days after the warranty was up the heatsink fell off (he says) and landed on the video card. The motherboard, CPU and video card have all been replaced (MB is identical replacement, CPU went from Athalon 1.2 to Duron 1.2, and Graphics card was upgraded). The system will boot now, but will not get past the blue HP screen.

My questions to those out there is this.
1) How can I get past the blue screen into bios?
2) Is there any self diagnostic utility in the bios?
3) Any ideas why it won't go past this screen?

The board is an Asus A7V-VM.
CPU is a Duron 1.2 200 FSB
Any ideas? I need to figure this out before this time next week so he can take it back to college with him, and I am kinda stumped since I can't figure out how to get into the BIOS, he sent no manuals with it so I can't read them.

okay, so i got a new laptop, it's an MSI. here's the link to the system page:
http://www.msi-computer.ca/product_info.php?cPath=63_68&products_id=218

My laptop is connected to a router that's connected by cable to two pcs and wirelessly to my laptop.

My problem is, that radomly, and very often, I'll be browsing the net and IE will show "page cannot be displayed" going back and trying again, or clicking refresh leads to the same problem. I can then switch to firefox and the same page will work.

Also, sometimes it happens the same in firefox. (I'll open a page and it will say unable to show page and going back and refreshing won't solve the problem, and i can access it on IE)

AND THEN...

Sometimes I can't access it on EITHER browser...but a few hours later, I can.

Any idea what I can do to fix this?

Also, it's not simply one site. It's almost any.

I have recently done a clean install of window 7 ultimate 64 bit on my SSD without issue, however I also have 2 additional HD's installed for storage both of which were disconnected during my fresh install of windows, on first boot all was well without my other 2 HD connected, finalised my fresh install with usual software all up and running nice and sweet.
Now the problem's start when connecting my other 2 HD's to the system 1st boot with 1 HD connected fine no problems if I connect both HD's I get post boot which identifies all drives but then fails to boot with a message saying.

The Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Suspecting a faulty connection I reconnected both SATA leads but still the same problem,Ive also checked both HD's 1 at a time and they show fine, but when connecting both and try to boot I get the message again.
Here's the weired part. if I boot the system with 1HD connected fine, then connect the second HD while the system is up and running the 2nd HD show up no problem.
I have tried system repair via cd and command promt, using DISKPART to fixmbr and show to be successful so I am at a loss what to do next

My cousin called to tell me that he had a pop-up that said he has a virus and to call this number. He did and was told that it will cost $300 to fix and he can take it to Staples to get fixed (never heard of that one).

I'm going there tomorrow to fix it. Can you guys/girls give me a list of software I might need?

So far I have MSE, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, HiJackThis.

A:I just got that call...

Google that phone number or try in some other way to determine what particular virus that might be and then pound Google for a solution--which might mention applications that are known to be able to get rid of it.
