msn instant messaging

Q: msn instant messaging

I can not sign on to my IM. It tells me that either a problem with my service or my Internet connection. I have no problem with going to email or web except fir the IM. When I click on Help it locks up my Netscape Communicator with an illegal operation. If I go through Explorer it will not load the MSN pages I need. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times without getting it to work. MSN 6.0 Instant Messaging. Windows 98. I tried to reuse the MSN 5.0 but it is no longer in my PC. Then I tried to set up a new account through Explorer and MSN. I got to put in my name etc. and then I went to finish it didn’t have a page to go to. It was not available. Friend of mine have hotmail address for the IM and have no problems. I also tried to “Repair” and then I came up with a file not there “msnMsgs.msi” But when I look in my PC find files and folders it is there… I repaired with the file found and I still can’t get go online. Everything else with ( web / email / weather bug ) all work fine…

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think my problem started when I wanted to defrag my pc and the pc locked up. I had to turn if off manually and then the IM wouldn't let me sign in....BUT I don't think that explains the problems with the web pages. Hopefully someone will have an answer for me...

The newer versions of AIM instant messaging has a typing indicator, but it doesn't seem to work for my son and I.

Both my son & I have the newest version of AIM instant messaging. He had Windows XP Pro and I am using Windows XP home. We use IM often as we are in different parts of the Country.

The help mentions that the other person you are talking to may have disabled their preference to allow other users to see their typing status! I can not find anywhere in preferences to able or disable this function.

My IM was upgraded about a month ago from an original install last Oct. My son's was just downloaded as a new install after installing XP Pro. Everything works fine except the typing indicator. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your time in advance.

I have Instant Messaging Service setup on my Exchange server. It had been working just fine since last December but lately the clients have been complaining. Sometimes the contact list is absolutely wrong as far as offline or online and I know it has to update but the lists are sometimes wrong all day. Some of the messages are sent with no errors but it never shows up on the receiving end. When replying to a message it states that the message could not reach the person that just sent the message and they are both logged on. Lets see, mmmmm, ok the changes I've made since this started have been SP3 for Exchange not Windows, and the only other one is a Helpdesk from Tom Rizzo's Programming Book. Has anyone else had problems like this and how did you resolve it? Could it be that I changed the directory security on the default web site and how are your directory security authentication settings set up? I have my server setup as an IM Virtual Directory. I edited the client installs so that they cannot connect to the internet for IM (MSN, Hotmail), they can only connect to Exchange Server.

We use IM as a flash to let people know they have another phone call, so a quick response would be very helpful.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated,

hello all, long time no type!i'm hoping someone here can tell me why i've suddenly developed this weird problem.i've had msn instant messenger forever...or at least since i've had my 'puter, which is 3 1/2 years. yes, i have plus! onboard, also...WITHOUT the sponsor program. in the last few months, i've been having strange problems with it. when i click on someone's name, the border of the window appears...and a..."ghost"...sits on my screen for about 15 seconds...then it finally fills in and becomes whoever's window i've clicked. alternately, when someone sends me an im, a "ghost" appears on my screen, letting me know that someone is trying to im me...and while this "ghost" solidifies, my mouse freezes, i get thrown into super-slow time, and about 90% of the time, i'm booted off whatever site i happen to be at. once the window forms completely and opens, everything works fine again. this process can take anywhere from 15 to 45 seconds.a few notes:since i disappeared and resurfaced, i've moved...and consequently, gone from cable 'net to *gasp* dial up, the ONLY service available in the area i've relocated to. however, this didn't happen for several months AFTER i connected to the dial up service (and it occurs even on a T1 connection, as i recently took my 'puter to my son's home and connected with his cable service).i have already uninstalled and reinstalled both the... Eh, take a look at this, It seems AOL has patented instant messaging.

http://news.com.com/2100-1023-978234.html?tag=techdirt

The main thing I find disturbing is this paragraph.

"The claim is it's a system where you have a network; you have a way to monitor who's on the network; and if you want to talk to them you hook them up," said Gregory Aharonian, publisher of Internet Patent News Service, a newsletter that's critical of technology patents. "If you're doing something like that, you're potentially infringing." Click to expand...

wouldn't that mean that pretty much any form of Internet Communication is potentially infringing?

Hello, I need some help on a problem with Yahoo Messenger. I hadn't used Yahoo Messenger for about 3 weeks, and when I tried to use it this weekend, it would not connect. My computer is a Dell Dimension 2400, with Windows XP. I have determined that the problem began when I inadvertently got Hotbar installed on the computer when I downloaded a photo for the desktop. At that time I was having problems with Hotbar pop-ups, even though I had a pop-up blocker. So I uninstalled the Hotbar, after trial and error finding everything that it took to get rid of it. I got a message from Hotbar that the program had been uninstalled, but now when I try to access Windows Messenger, I type in my user name and password and then a window pops up saying that Yahoo was unable to sign me in and to check and be sure I am online. It also says Lan/Firewall users need to set the proxy settings. Well, I have dial-up connection, and it doesn't matter if my firewall is enabled or disabled, I get the same message. My internet server says there are no proxy setting for dial-up connections. So, I uninstalled Yahoo Messenger, downloaded it from Yahoo and re-installed it, and then I got an error message that the "specified .dll module could not be found." (It didn't say which .dll module was the specified one. ) In addition, I tried using System Restore to take the computer back to a point where everything was working correctly, but that also restored Hotbar and I still couldn'... Hi,

i'm seeking an instant messaging freeware that can allow me to send from my desktop un message to all computers that are connected on the LAN which i'm the manager.
I would like that when i send a message and that the message arrive on the receiver computer, the message is directly displayed and ready to be read on the screen.

I know 2 software that are doing partialy this job:

-realpopup: the new message window is firstly automatically reduce on the task bar of operating system, and a cursor blinks near the computer clock to warn the user of the arrival of the new message; if the user doesn't pay attention he can't know that i got a new message!
-winchat of win xp: the user that receive a new instant message have to simulate the pick up the phone to receive and read the arrival message; so if he doesn't take care, he may not know that he receives a new message.

Why do i want such a software: to be able to inform users when an urgent message has to be widely and quickly broadcast; for example, this morning i had wanted to broadcast the information about the "valentine's day virus" to all my LAN users, before they open their email box; i have been oblige to print the information and share it to each one!

My operating system: win xp pro sp2
My LAN users operating system: win xp pro sp2

Thank you

Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can help me out with this problem.

I'm using a Nvidia nforce networking controller.

I built this new pc about a month ago, running on vista x64... everything runs fine EXCEPT instant messaging. Alot of the time I keep getting dropped or failed to send messages from friends. Most of the time I can send messages fine but my friends tell me they have problems sending messages to me sometimes especially in MSN and AIM, it sucks because sometimes they think I'm ignoring them when infact im just not recieving anything or missing some messages... this seems to sound something like packetloss? I don't have any other internet problems... I can download files at 1.8mb per sec... yet I cant do simple things like have a normal instant messenger conversation for more than 5 mins.

Downloading, uploading, everything else seems stable for the part and fast. I do not have this problem on my laptop, only on this pc when I'm chatting via online messengers.

I have the latest nforce drivers installed for the network controller. I've tried reinstalling, updating them etc but I'm not sure what's wrong.

I've tried looking at the controller settings but I'm not sure which settings to touch, if this even is the problem

I've done tons of benchmarking, everything seems stable.. not sure what's wrong. my specs are below.

evga 680i motherboard
q6600
4gb ram
2 x 8800 ultra sli.
850w enermax

My wife was at work and was IMing a friend who was at home and she told me that her friend was getting the messages but after her friend IM'd her back she wasn't getting any reply's from her friend.
Her friend has high speed cable thru Comcast at home. If her friend had the cable modem turned off (which I'll confirm that when I talk to her again) then she obviously couldn't send anything out, but how could she get the messaging my wife was sending to her if the cable modem was off, or what could the problem be if her cable modem was on?
Thanks, Jim

A:Instant Messaging problems

First off all, itz not a modem because a modem works in a particular way, (for dialup) but who cares..

If the "modem" was off, she couldnt recieve anything, I think mabye the problem is, your wife's work has a firewall installed, so she can't get anything back.

If thatz the case, you can't do anything anout it, after all @ work u're suposed to work!!

However, if she just noticed this problem, but before it all worked, it might be something else..

Some good advice in this PC World article on staying safe in the IM environment.Virus attacks increasing for Instant Messaging environmenthttp://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,115837,00.aspWhen it comes to viruses and worms, e-mail gets all the attention--but now that instant messaging has infiltrated both home and office, it too has become an attractive and easy target for virus writers.? From 2002 to 2003, worms and viruses that spread via IM and peer-to-peer networks increased 400 percent, according to Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report. Already this year, we've seen the Jitux.A and Bizex worms targeting MSN Messenger and ICQ, respectively. To prevent infection, keep your IM client updated and follow these tips:1. Be wary of files sent via IM, especially those with .exe and .scr extensions, or ones purporting to be games. For best protection, verify with senders before opening. 2. Never click an unsolicited link fed via IM, or one lurking in another member's profile or away message. 3. Check your antivirus company's home page or a general virus site, such as About.com's antivirus.about.com, for news on current threats. 4. Evaluate your protection at Eicar.org, which has an antivirus test. 5. Upgrade employees' IM clients. Lotus offers its own secure IM program; AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo all have paid corporate IM services with built-in security. Products from FaceTime and Akonix help secure existing consumer IM apps and let you filter messages by content

A sophisticated computer worm spreading via AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) is setting up a botnet that may be difficult to combat...The worm, known as W32.pipeline, propagates when AIM users click on a web link that appears to have been sent to them by someone on their buddy list. They receive a message along the lines of, "Hey, would it be okay if I upload this picture of you to my blog?" If the recipient clicks on the link, an executable file that looks like a Jpeg will download into a Windows folder,...The file can then execute a number of different attacks...pcadvisor.co.uk

I want to install AIM Instant Messaging, but have a question about privacy.

The AIM web site has a brief note about its new and improved PLAXO service, which "helps you synchronize your address books". The Plaxo function is built-in to the AIM Instant messaging, and automatically plugs into email programs such as Outlook.

According to wiki, Plaxo is a central server that keeps your email address, and when you change it, it notifies all other people who use Plaxo and have your address. It says:
"Users and their contacts store their information on Plaxo's servers. When this information is edited by the user, the changes appear in the address books of all those who listed the account changer in their own books. Once contacts are stored in the central location, it is possible to list connections between contacts and access the address book from anywhere "

2. Suppose that in the future, I decide to unlist a buddy who I've decided is a weirdo --will he still be able to find my real email address?

3. And if I change my Outlook email address will the whole worl... Read more

I put a customized "away" message on two nights ago. Turned it off yesterday morning, but the customized message is evidently still appearing to those on my buddy list. I've deleted the customized message altogether, and yet it still appears. When I think I have no away message on, it still appears. I've signed out, rebooted, etc, nothing will remove it. I would like to avoid reloading aim as I'm not sure how to transfer all my buddy list info over; that would be a nightmare. Does anyone have any suggestions?
