Lenovo 720 FHD - Safe to update Bios?

Q: Lenovo 720 FHD - Safe to update Bios?

Hello, I just bought the Lenovo 720 (FHD version - i7) and was wondering if it was now safe to update the BIOS since i have read a few posts on here saying that the latest bios was bricking them? Thanks. **EDIT** This wasnt the one i saw originally but it looks like they pulled the offending one: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-720-bricked-after-new-BIOS-update/m-p...

Preferred Solution: Lenovo 720 FHD - Safe to update Bios?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So it's not a huge problem, but after updating the BIOS on my T480 from V1.17 to the current release V1.24 the Lenovo Vantage tool still reports (on lower right corner of screen) that I have BIOS V1.17 installed. The update installed normally and I have verified that V1.24 is installed Boot --> F1 --> reviewed installed version. I thought you guys at Lenovo might want to check it out. I do have the current version of Vantage installed (latest version offered by the Microsoft Store for Win 10 Pro): V 4.27.32.0

See below.  Basically Vantage "may not"  show current BIOS version.  It will eventually "catch up".  The data is cached.

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

I?m currently updating the BIOS of some Lenovo ThinkCentre M83 PCs and I came across a problem. The Flash UEFI BIOS update (provide by Lenovo) worked almost perfectly on the first PCs, despite it didn?t automatically open the console and started the flashing process.Anyways I did go on with my work. Almost all other PCs had the problem that when the second phase (yellow font)/ afudos.exe imagefb.rom /defans /capsule /b /n /r /sp started the afuwin.exe stopped working (it crashed). It seemed like the Update wouldn?t get done this way so I decided to try it with the USB Flash method, also provided by Lenovo, but it also didn?t work. It says in the second phase ?15 - Error: Secure Flash function is not supported on this platform? Last but not least I tried to update the BIOS with the CD-ISO but when updating with this method it says that the BIOS-Version is too old. Some information about the system: ThinkCenter M83Type: 10BE0003GEOS: Windows 7 SP1 64bitBIOS-Revision: FBKT73AUSBIOS last Updated: 01.April.2014 Furthermore Information what I found out:BIOS-Revision seems to not matter (same version but some worked some not)Doesn?t matter if BIOS is set to UEFI only or Legacy onlySecure Boot also seems like it doesn?t matter if its on or notWhen the afuwin.exe crashes it only writes a return codeI use the update provided by this Page from Lenovo (Update: fbjycpusa)https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/de/downloads/ds035753 Thanks... Hi. I have a Lenovo B50-30 mode 80ES. It was set to require a password on startup starting with a capital "A". While experiencing charging problems, amongst other things, I updated the BIOS to 9CCN35WW, downloaded from the Lenovo support site. Since updating, the laptop no longer asks for a password on startup (No big deal, I applied a windows password), however, when pressing F2 to access the BIOS (which I need to do, the F keys are the wrong way round), it asks for a password, When pressing to strike a capital A, the laptop beeps and doesnt enter it. It wont accept capital letters anymore, therefore it wont accept the pre BIOS update password. I have referred the laptop to Lenovo service, including returning the laptop, and they have been nothing short of useless. They said they couldnt repair it under warranty because of "Marks, cracks, inappropriate treatment" and it would cost 255 for a replacement system board. I really couldnt see why I should pay for an issue created by their support system, so I asked them to return it unrepaired. Upon arrival, the laptop was immaculate, so I dont know what damage they were referring to. Is it possible to downgrade the BIOS to a pre update revision, to change the password and then reset it to one the new BIOS approves of? Thankyou in advance.

I have just purchased a used ThinkCentre M92p which I believe came from the corporate environment.  I have not received it yet but I am assuming that the BIOS won't be up-to-date.  I have a ThinkPad T430s (also purchased from the corporate world via Ebay) and have used Lenovo System Update to update the BIOS several times without a problem.  Is there any reason why the ThinkCentre PCs shouldn't work just well using System Update to update the BIOS?  There seem to be a lot of threads about BIOS update problems for this model and almost all recommend burning a CD ISO to do the update.

If you're on Win10 already which sounds like it. I would not install it.- until its verified as 100% good- the Installer packaged program is also 100% Win10 compatible. I think someone bricked there system because of the latter point reading here last week. Also you may need the latest MS updates for Win 10 for it to work. If it doesn't fully install you system and files could be compromized/lost with no way to get them off. I say again. Wait to be sure and see other threads on issues with Y notebooks who reverted to an old bios.

Just got my ThinkPad X1 Extreme tonight - model 20MF000BUS. (40% Off deal from November). I am only running Windows 10 (not planning to run any Linux OS). A week ago, I was alerted to the BIOS bricking issue for Discrete Graphics and Thunderbolt USB Assist options, so I will not enable those settings, which are not needed in my case anyway since I only plan to run Windows 10 (for the foreseeeable future at least). I got a Lenovo (app) pop-up tonight saying to update the BIOS. Normally I would not even ask this, but given the bricking issues with changing settings, I want to be extar cautious. Is it safe to update my X1 Extreme from BIOS 1.13 to 1.15 so long as I stick with default settings (i.e. do not change anything)? I assume the Default values for Graphics are 'Hybrid' and Thunderbolt USB Assist is 'Disabled'? Just wanted to double check if anyone had any issues just from updating the BIOS from 1.13 to 1.15 without changing defaults. Thanks! PS: Great laptop so far given the 40% off sale price. Hello and Thanks in Advance.

I am experiencing BSOD crashes and a buggy driver could be the culprit. Dell recommends updating the BIOS prior to the drivers.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/982135-learned-source-problem-bsod-but.html

I checked Dell's website and the current BIOS for my machine is A08 and my system at present is A05, so maybe this should be done anyway.

The BIOS update is just a .exe file.and its description is "Dell Computer Flash BIOS Upgrade."

I am afraid to run the BIOS update in "normal mode" because of these persistent crashes. Who knows what state my computer will be in if it crashes/freezes during a BIOS update.

My computer runs fine in "Safe Mode." Would it be OK to update my BIOS through Safe Mode so that I don't have to worry about my computer crashing in the middle of the update? Does the computer care if this is done through safe or normal mode? Should I log in as an administrator to do this also?

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears. Thanks!

Chris

Fan and other led's are operating. I have tried removing ram modules - no success. Here is a list of supported CPU's that I have found on this very same community: ? hi mahdhir2005,

Im sorry to hear that.

I would suggest you call the Lenovo Technical Team regarding the Issue. If it is the BIOS that's causing the issue then there maybe no source or option to have it fixed without they're help or service.

If the BIOS software you downloaded was from a legit Lenovo Site and correct model, then I think It will be ok to Just report them what happened and ask for possible option.

Hope this helped
Thanks!

If yes, how can I do it? Because Linux or 64 bit Linux uses UEFI only. To Lenovo staff: I particularly bought Lenovo laptop as I heard Lenovo is one of the few brands that can run Linux. But Lenovo doesn't provide BIOS update for Linux. There is only microcode for Linux and it's not sufficient to call Lenovo as a Linux friendly laptop brand. I appreaciate your answers.

Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key Then Select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media."How do I get this Rcovery Media? I have tried using the windows 10 recovery disk but it failes to correct the problem without reinstalling everything. Thanks,

Hi there!I recently bought a Lenovo B430 with a Celeron B830 inside and was thinking about upgrading to an Ivy Bridge CPU. My question is: do I have to do any BIOS update on it? My BIOS version is HOET36WW from 2012-08-20Thanks in advance and sorry for the bad english!

A:Lenovo B430 BIOS update

Hi Rodrigovhn,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to inform that Lenovo B430 Laptop is only compatible with the Celeron processor range as Ivy Bridge new technology the Motherboard/System board will not be compatible with the normal working of the computer, this is the reason the BIOS update is only available for Celeron processors only.

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Shiva Kumar
