Windows suddenly stopped showing the screen of the running programme.

Q: Windows suddenly stopped showing the screen of the running programme.

This is just a minor thing but I really want to get it fixed.

Recently I bought a new laptop dell xps15 and its windows 7 home premium 64bit.

I really like it and its got some really special function.

For example when you put your mouse cursor on the icon on the taskbar, it shows you the screen of that programme in a small window box.

But now that function is gone. Instead it looks like this:

does anyone know how to fix it?

Any help will be really appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Windows suddenly stopped showing the screen of the running programme.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all, I recently got Windows 7 64 bit.
the day i got the machine home and running, i connected my USB harddisk and installed some stuff i had backed up from it.

But suddently i dont see the USB drives when i connect them, i have 2 and none of them is detected, or will they are detected and the "Safelly Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon comes up in my right lower corner as it should, and when i click it my devices is shown by their propper names and i can safely remove them aswell. but they are not shown under "my computer" and my anti virus dosnt scan them aswell.

Tho if i plug in my USB flash pin from my key ring it finds it, anti virus scans it and it shows up just as it should.

Can anyone help me solve this as im really confused by now.

A:Win 7 Suddenly Stopped showing USB Drives

Welcome to SF, Jimkromann.

Could be a driver conflict.

Type MSCONF, go to startup tab, and uncheck everything EXCEPT microsoft items (for testing purposes).

Reboot and see if your usb devices are recognized.

I just bought this tower from someone, HP Pavilion Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct. It worked for an hour and a half. Then it said that it was shutting down to correct a problem. It never came back on. When I first got it I blew and vacuum so much black dust I never saw that thick before. I cleaned out both fans with blowing air and vacuum. It worked for 1 1/2 hours. He also had installed windows 10 on it. There is not many programs installed on it, he said he only used it to play games, and there are a few photos in the picture library. Please help someone please?

Hello Would like to help but first what is the specific model of your PC? Dirty PC is not good to begin with. Upgrading from Windows Vista, amazed the upgrade worked, to Windows 10 is another snag in finding the problem. Suggest you try going back to Windows Vista and diagnose problem with factory operating system. Do you have HP recovery discs for Windows Vista? Maybe you can start there to find problem. Grzy

Well, like the title says above, my Vista suddenly won't open or run any installation software.

This problem happened around October 9th. I went to Chicago for a few days, and while staying there, I received a phone call from my younger sister who told me that my father was messing with my computer.

My Vista was running totally fine before I left, no problems whatsoever. When I came home, I logged on my computer, like I normally would, but when I got to my desktop, it looked exactly like it just came out of the box. All my desktop icons were gone, background to the default, and the majority of my programs were missing.
A notice popped up saying that C++ crashed or something (I wish I got a screenshot of the other notices that popped up along with that one).

I had no idea what my dad did to my computer but I was pissed off. Soon, I did a system restore, the day before I left for Chicago.

Everything was back to normal but Vista would no longer allow me to open up and run installation programs. I've tried looking for other installation programs (I think it was called Installation Wizard or something, I'm not really sure).

Just recently I downloaded Windows Installer.
The only that actually installed was the Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu file. (I'm not really that computer smart >_>) It installed, told me to reboot my computer, and so I did. I still wasn't able to run installation progr... Read more

Hi all,

I am trying to install SAGE payroll accounting software onto my HP Pro 3010 SFF Pc.

The PC was given to me by a friend through his work and set up by him, it was ordered for a business but left over as spare, and written on the side is: " OS: Win 7 downgraded to XP Pro".

It is running windows 7 though.

When i install it a message comes up after the install wizard has run for a couple of minutes, saying "We have detected that your computer is running windows XP, as there is no longer support for it, we do not allow our programme to be installed on an XP Pc.."

The SAGE software support asked me to try running a 'scannow' on the command prompt, which says i need administrator level to run it.

My profile on the settings says my profile is an admin.

I tried speaking to Microsoft support and they said i had a virus and needed to buy micrsoft support to remove it. He was 100% confident they could solve the issue but was cagey on how he can prove it.

It runs AVG free (i have had the full programme on trial) and i've done several scans with that and the microsoft security and a separate malware removal tool, but no viruses or threats were found.
Please can anyone offer help?? I've spent hours on this...

Hi everyone, I have a Lenovo X220 Tablet that has touch screen and pen. They suddenly stopped working today. The LCD screen still works pefectly fine, however. The touch screen is enabled on the touch settings. When I try to calibrate, it does not detect my finger or the pen. I also noticed that when I tried to reinstall the driver and it said "a supported tablet was not found on this system". I have the most recent bios. I am running Windows 7 that came with the laptop. All windows updates completed. Is it possible for the digitizer to be defective, but the LCD screen to work perfectly fine?Could it be just a ribbon failure?Which part would need to be replaced, if this is the case? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

A:X220 tablet touch screen suddenly stopped working

Even though it looks like a single device, it is really 3 separate ones.  There is a basic panel.  There is a static discharge digitizer in the front to sense finger touches.  There is a second Wacom digitizer behind the panel to detect the pen.  Any of them can fail.  The wires in the cable can also crack.  Since both digitizers failed, I would first look in device manager to see if there could be a problem with a USB hub.  (digitizers both connect as USB devices.)  My next guess would be the cable.  Sorry I cannot be more definite.

So out of nowhere, my 7737's touch screen has stopped responding to touch.  Mouse works just fine.  Device manager has the monitor driver listed as a "generic PnP monitor", which sounds suspicious... and under Human Interface drivers, there is nothing listed for touchscreens, just airplane mode ***...  I have restarted, driver updated, etc. to no avail.  Any ideas?

My touch screen stopped working in early October without myself doing any changes that I'm aware of. The Windows Anniversary update came at that time and might be involved. In the Device Manager, there is no touch screen under "Mice and other pointing devices". There is a "HID compatible touch screen" under HID, which I've tried to disable and to uninstall. It comes back after reboot, but still no function. It could of course be a hardware problem, but it's usually not.... /Andreas

I usually like to leave my computer on overnight. So I go offline, disable my wireless, and put on a video playlist in full screen to help me sleep. Anyway, today I woke up and saw the Windows Media Player no longer full screen, and the wireless switch was actually turned on. This is strange because I know I turned wireless off and I frequently check my system with Malwarebytes.

What could this be? Did someone snoop in my computer? Thanks in advance for the support.

My laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Recently, while it is has an excellent conneciton to the wireless network or conected via ethernet lead to the router, browsing has become painfully slow, playing on-line games impossible etc. Other laptops browse quickly between pages etc.

I today noticed in the Task Manager services tab that a large number of services are marked as "stopped" (about 50% of those in the list). I have attached a screen shot. I've no idea if this is related- but some of the services look relatively important.

Could this be related? Suggestions on where to go if it is please.

Many thanks

A:Task Manager showing many services "stopped" and internet running slowly

If ALL of the services were running, your computer would be even slower.

It's normal for 50% or more of the services to be stopped.

If you go to SERVICES.MSC, you will get a better picture of the services list and which ones are running.

In this form I hope to solve PC errors, thanks for the help everyone!

I've a lot of PCs, all of whom have Windows 7 Enterprise and XP dual boot.

Nowadays, suddenly in many PCs both the OSs stopped booting, but I'll query about Windows 7 in this forum.

When Windows 7 starts to boot, as soon as the 'glasses' of the Windows logo appears, Windows 7 reboots.

On booting from safe mode, the restart happens after classpnp.sys is loading/loaded. I tried renaming that file, but then the restart happens on disk.sys, on moving that file too, it happens with fvevol.sys.

I tried to enabling boot logging (from F8), but there's no ntbtlog file in the Windows installation directory.

Please help me solve this PC problem!

A:Windows 7 suddenly stopped booting.

Welcome to SevenForums!

You mentioned you have many PC's with the same problem. The first thing I would look for is any updates that were installed on the machines shortly before the problems started.

If the PC's have System Restore active you might want to boot using a Install or Repair disc and restore to an earlier date.

Also try running Startup Repair, Startup Repair You may have to run it three times, booting between each run.

I try to never touch any machines that are dual boot, sorry I don't really have a lot of suggestions.

Hello, I know some people have had problems with wifi in windows 10 and there are solutions all over the internet, but my case is a little bit different and I haven't been able to find a solution: I Upgraded my notebook (Lenovo T410) from Win7 to Win10 in october, 2015. So far, I haven't had any problems related with internet connection, but 3 days ago wifi stopped working. 1. In the taskbar, in the far right (I think it's called "tray"), the wifi symbol appears greyed out with a white X in a red circle. If I click on it, no wifi networks appear. Both flight mode and wifi are disconnected. 2. If I open Configuration->Internet->Wifi, wifi connection appears "disabled" in a "side-to-side" switch. If I click on it to enable the wifi, the switch goes back again to "disabled"!! 3. If I go to Windows key+R (Run)-> Write "ncpa.cpl"->Accept, I can see that the wifi network adapter is not connected. When I right-click it and click "connect", the configuration->Internet panel appears (so I'm basically back to point number 2) Extra information: The computer does not have a mechanical switch for wifi. Drivers for the network adapter is up-to-date. In the "device manager" everything seems alright (no alert signs). I would be really glad if you could help me with this issue! Thanks a lot

I have a dual boot Win 7, Win 8 setup. Suddenly the audio has stopped working on Win 8. (Works fine on Win 7) I checked for driver updates, even "installed" an old driver which didn't actually install. The volume control shows its trying to work, puff of green comes and goes at the bottom of the slider.

If you have had this problem and solved it please let me know. Other suggestions welcome however I've tried "cleaning" for other concerns and that made a real mess of the setups for several programs. I suppose I could do a refresh but that's equivalent to a re-install... what a pain.

A:Windows 8 Audio suddenly stopped working

I guess I looked in the wrong place for answers and they moved my posting to this area. Unfortunately it appears others have the same problem with no solution. I did try updating the video driver along with all available Win 8 updates. Still no audio.

I have all my programs running well on the Win 7 partition so I'm thinking of doing a Refresh. If that "refreshes" back to the original installation I assume the many many updates will be required. Any idea how long that will take?

So im not sure if im posting this in the right place. But i see no category for devices. Aswell as i feel like this is a windows related issue.

Anyway. I have an msi gaming G series laptop. I turned it on today to find out my [n] key no longer registers?. It is only my [n] key in lowercase. The key worked fine yesterday, i didn't spill anything into my keyboard or anything like that and everything else works fine. The key works if i hold shift ,i get a capital N, if i use caps lock however it doesnt work either. But if i use caps lock and hold shift and press n, i finally get a lowercase [n]. But this is the only way to get it to work. Ive checked for windows and drivers updates. Both updated, restarted multiple times, tried toggling languages. Still doesnt work. If i make a new user account, it works perfectly on that account. So for some reason only on my account will [n] not register. Ive asked all my friends who are tech genius's and even they are confused on how this is possible.
Please help this is very frustrating due to the degree of impossibility.

I bought a computer running Windows 7 64 bit about 6 months ago and I've been using it daily without a problem, but today when I turned it on, I found that I cannot use any program that requires Administrator privileges. I have only one user account and my user info in the Control Panel shows that I am an Administrator.

Here's what happens: If I try to load a program that requires Administrator privileges or use the "Run as Administrator" option on any program, the cursor turns into a little blue rotating circle indefinitely and the program never starts.

Other symptoms:
The network icon on the taskbar shows a little blue circle at all times, and I can't open the Network and Sharing Center or run any troubleshooters.

I can access the internet with Google Chrome browser, but not Firefox (although later this evening Firefox is working again). My McAfee Antivirus Suite doesn't load and I can't access the McAfee control panel.

Other programs such as Photoshop and Open Office work just fine.

Here's what I tried:
I called up the command prompt and ran chkdsk. I got this message: "Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode."

I went to safe mode and ran chkdsk again (also chkdsk /f and chkdsk c:/r). I get this message "Chkdsk cannot run because this volume is in use by another another process." I schedule it to run on reboot which it does but doesn't solve the problem.

I ran SFC... Read more

Hi all,
I am having a problem with Windows Update on my computer that just started yesterday.
First, what happened was that it said that I never checked for updates and it also said "Find about more free software from (null)."
What I did was empty the SoftwareDistribution folder and check again, and that worked.
But today, while I was able to install updates yesterday, my computer is telling me that I've never checked for any updates.
I tried emptying and rebuilding SoftwareDistribution again, but that didn't work. I just keep getting error code 8007000E.
I have even tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter, but it said that it didn't fix the error code. I'm still getting error 8007000E.
Nothing is working.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Of course, this is a very annoying, yet unexpected problem.
(Microsoft even said "Upgrading to Windows 10 is the best way to fix this problem!" I don't know if that's worth it right  now...)
Best regards,

Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. Hello windows gurus.
I believe this is a setting problem, but can't figure it out.
Dell Studio 1749 laptop running win7 pro 64

I was browsing the internet with IE10, had a bunch of other stuff open (xcel, quickbooks, other software).

All of a sudden, I must of hit some kind of key combo, because the scroll wheel on the mouse started zooming in and out the active windows instead of scrolling them up and down. Also IE10 looked different, the tabs on top "dissapeared" until I hovered the mouse up top, and then they popped back down. Kind of like the Dell Dock.

Then when I typed in a key different windows would open. I believe "i" opened IE favorites, and some other keys did different things.

The keyboard did not work in the sense that I could not type in url's into IE, or information into exel cells, notepad, etc.

I clicked around in control pannel thinking somehoe I activated some global stickey keys, but couldn't find anything.

Num lock and caps lock still activate, and if I reboot, I can login into windows with my password, so I know the keyboard is still connected and working.

Device manager says the device is working properly.

Please help?????
Thansk in advance. I know this is something stupid.

A:slow windows XP(slow booting and programme running)

The u torrent made your computer slow. Check your Task MAnager for extra processes(remember to see processes for all users),check your computer with reliable anti-malware programs and antispyware programs like spybot S&D,Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware,Ad-Aware,and your AV program. Try online scanners like kaspersky and f-secure. If nothing helps, scan your computer with HiJackThis(post log here somewhere,I can't handle HJT logs. And dont AnalyzeThis)and OTListit by OldTimer(like a better version of HJT) Then put the Extras.Txt also in the mix as an attachment if this forum allows txt attachments. I would suggest malware from p2p sharing made it slow. If that fixes it,stay clean. Never visit any pornographic websites or download anything(except AV programs) without an Antivirus program like Avast!,AVG ,F-Secure,Norton etc.

I ask that you please be patient with me, as I am not very knowledgeable where computers are concerned.
So my wireless internet connection has been working completely fine on my Windows 8 laptop up until a couple of days ago. The wireless internet is working for all devices in my home except for the laptop. I am currently typing this on my mobile phone. When I try to diagnose the connection, I get an error message that says, "'Wi-Fi' doesn't have a valid ip configuration". I went into the Administrator Command Prompt and attempted an ipconfig /renew as I have heard this solves the problem, but I receive a message that says, "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 11 while it has its media disconnected."

I have reset the computer, but to no avail. The internet connection icon on my taskbar shows me that I have a strong internet connection, but when I mouse over it, it says, "Unidentified Network. No internet access." I have also tried resetting the router. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Wireless Internet Connection Suddenly Stopped Working on Windows 8

The Local Area Connection would not interfere with the wireless as that's the Ethernet port. That message is normal.

Go into the Network and Sharing Center, then on the left side in the blue section choose change adapter settings.

Right click on the wireless network icon and choose properties.

Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 and click properties. Make sure both sections are selected for Automatically Obtain IP/DNS address. If you had to change them, click OK then Close. Go back to command prompt and type ipconfig/all and post teh results here.

Hi! For as long as I have had Windows Movie Maker on my computer I have been able to import mov. files without converting them with another application. Today, I tried to and it won't let me. The only thing I can think of is that I recently uninstalled muvee autoproducer 5.0 off of my computer because I never used it and didn't even know what it was. I'm starting to think that maybe a codec came with it that allowed my WMM to accept mov. files. Anyone know why else this might be happening and if there is a special codec for it?

Over the past couple days my computer stopped playing any videos in windows media player. It's always played any/all types of video files (wmv, mpg, etc..) just fine up until a couple days ago when the video stopped showing. The audio plays just fine, just no video. It doesn't matter what the video format is, and the files also play OK in winamp and/or nero showtime.
I've updated to the most recent k-lite codec packs and that didn't help. I've tried to download and re-install WMP 11 but MS recognizes that I already have the most recent player.
I've tried going into Tools -> Options, Performance tab and changing the video
acceleration down to see if that helped, but no such luck

Is there some way of running a repair to it? I dug around some but haven't found anything anywhere on my machine that allows me to do anything to wmp.
Also, I'm holding off upgrading to windows 7 on this machine until this issue is resolved, but do ya suppose it may get fixed during the upgrade if I went ahead with it?

A:Windows media player stopped showing video

Doesn't seem to be possible to uninstall WMP 11 in Vista.

Do you have a restore point to roll back to.

You could try posting in the Windows Vista forum.

If you look in the Windows 7 forum, the general consensus seems to be that a complete install of Windows 7
is preferable to any kind of 'upgrade'.

If I rename the folder, the problem goes away and I can view the folder content.

If I then rename the folder back to what it was before, the problem returns.

This issue also occurs with the same specific folder, if I boot into Safe-Mode (which would seem to rule out it being a 3rd-party software conflict issue).

If I login using a different user account the problem does not occur (so it seems to be an issue
with the user account).

The problem does not occur if I map a drive from a second computer and view the folder contents.

The problem doesn't occur when I use the Save As function to save another file to that specific folder.

I have performed an extended memory check, along with running "chkdsk /R" with no change in behavior.

Any helpful tips on getting to the bottom of this would be much appreciated. I did find a reference to someone else having the same issues in a different forum (from Dec 2011); however, no help was forthcoming.

A:Windows Explorer stopped showing folder contents

I used the following procedure which cleared up the folder content display loop preventing Windows Explorer from showing the folder contents:In the Tree Pane of Windows Explorer, I highlighted the problem folder
Activated the Menu Bar via Organize | Layout
On the menu bar I used View | Customize this folder...Selected General Items for the Optimize this folder for option

I applied the change and the folder contents once again became viewable (no slider bar flashing).
Changing the Optimize option back to Pictures still allowed the folder contents to be viewed.

Whenever I put in a usb drive - whether it's a pen drive or a hard drive on a usb adapter, Windows Explorer lists it as "local drive" or "removable drive". It didn't use to be this way. In the Win Explorer Properties dialog, the label text box is blank. Renaming the drive there is not reflected in the Explorer interface, but it is when I call up a CMD window and execute "VOL G:".

SFC found no violations.

Dear all,

One of my Win7 PC's STOPPED showing my NAS and the shares on it in Windows Explorer. One of the shares (Pictures) was mapped as network drive P:: That also stopped worken.
It worked flawless for > 1,5 year and it stopped. As far as I remember, I did nothing that could make this happen (...as far as I remember...!). Last months I tried everything I found on the internet that possibly could solve this, but no success.

I'll try to picture the situation as clear as I can:

I have 2 Win7 PC's: a Desktop - having the problem -, with WIN7 Home Premium (EN) and a Laptop (WIN7 Home Premium NL, Dutch), not having the problem and showing the NAS and its share fine. Both are wired to the same switch. My wife is using an XP-machine - still, but I'm changing it to Lubuntu now - also showing the NAS and its shares properly in the windows explorer.

Screenshot from the Laptop, showing the NAS properly: WIN7-NL_Nas-shown.png

Screenshot from the problem machine, the Desktop, NOT showing the NAS and its shares properly: WIN7-EN_NAS_not_shown.png

When trying to access other devices, like the Laptop, from Windows Explorer, I get this error message, the same as when I try to map a network drive to a NAS-share: WIN7-EN_no-access-to-share.png

In contradiction to this (?), my file backup tool on this desktop (Cobian Backup) easily accesses the NAS and creates backup-folders on it and indeed backs up the selected files:

Have you tried leaving then rejoining the Homegroup from the problem machine?

Have you tried changing the Workgroup name, rebooting then changing the Workgroup name back to what ever it was?

Have you run a system file integrity scan using the sfc /scannow command?

Having a system image handy from before the problem occurred would be an easy fix at this point.....

Firstly I apologise if this has been answered anywhere before. I only registered for this particular problem.

Recently I've been hearing advertisements playing even when no programme is running, almost as soon as I start up.
I've done a disk cleanup, used Malwarebytes Anti Malware and Super Anti Spyware. After the threats they detected and seemed to remove my laptop seemed initially to be running quicker, however it soon slowed down and the audio advertisements continued to play. It really is driving me crazy now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh and I forgot to mention Malware Bytes detected pup.bitminer whatever that is and it doesn't seem to leave!

Today I am having problems with Windows 7. I don't know what exactly caused the problem but I will explain the problem to the best that I can.

I rebooted my computer today and upon loading windows it forced a CHKDSK, which seemed odd. Since I didn't feel like waiting, I skipped it. It took a while to load the login screen, so I entered my password and it took about 10 minutes for it to finish saying "Welcome." It finally loaded my background and continued loading processes but took about 30 minutes all together to get it up and running.

While it was running it was extremely slow, once the window would load it was fine, for example, loading my music folder took about 10 minutes and froze up the entire computer, but once it loaded I was able to browse the music at regular speed. Playing a song is another story...

I rebooted the computer and allowed it to run CHKDSK and it found a ton of what looked to be "orphaned system files." It repaired the situation and I continued to log in but only to find that I still have the same extremely slow computer...

When it is shutting down it takes about 10 minutes to shut down as well, even after force quitting all of the running processes.

Edit: I tried a system restore to a few days ago, but no noticeable changes.

The boot process, before today, usually took about 1.2 minutes. Now it's taking about 30.

Hey guys. I'm new to this place and was hoping you could help me with a problem. All of a sudden on my Windows 7 ultimate 64bit, my Windows started to run so slow to the point where I can basically not even use it. All the stats show my RAM registering fine(4gb) and I just can't find what the problem will be.

In its normal mode, it will take around 20min just to get to the front screen and is super slow when it comes to opening programs aswell.

It seems to run safe mode fine though, with speeds that I am used to.

So do you guys have any idea what my problem could be? What I should do? I basically would be able to run any programs on my desktop either if that's a suggestion, thanks!

my computer has been saying that it has been low on ram for a while, but i would ignore it as i have just finished download call of duty modern warfare 2 (a large game) and have been wanting to play it. Suddenly, my sound ceased to work and windows media player wont play files, instead putting a red x next to them as if they cant find them. When my headphones are plugged in the jack it wont work, but when i take the sound jack out my computers speakers (which are coming from the monitor) make very strange noises. I have a windows vista 32 bit and i would appreciate some help. Thank you.

A:[SOLVED] Sound suddenly stopped working and windows media player wont recognise files

Windows requires considerable memory to run media player.
If it is out of memory it wont even start.

Try to disable some things and see if it will work.

My windows security centre suddenly stopped recognizing my Zone Alarm Security Suite and Kaspersky Personal Pro antivirus. There was actually a sudden unexplained loud alarm coming from my computer around evening today (I was gzipping emac program that time). I am not sure what was the alarm for but what I did was to switch off the computer and the broadband wireless connection. When I switched on the computer, I notice windows security centre has stopped recognizing both software.

The event viewer indicated error 1802: The Windows Security Center Service was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party AntiVirus and Firewall.

Could someone explain what might have happened ?

A:Solved: Windows security centre suddenly stopped recognizing Zone Alarm and Kaspersky antivir

just dropping a thought since i see no one else has.....i've had some major issues with running multiple securty softwares....and have wasted hours trying to fix it. If i were in ur situation, i would turn off windows security, and just use Zone Alarm and Kasperskee (dunno how good that is, first time i'm hearing that name). Together, they should be good enough...besides, i personally don't think windows firewall is better than zone alarm/norton/etc.

You should be good.

btw, when you installed your other security softwares, didn't you get a msg saying "Would you like to make this your default [firewall/AV]?" Another suggestion would be to uninstall zone alarm and reinstall it while Windows Firewall is on. See if it detects that Windows Firewall is on and asks you if u want to make Zone Alarm your default firewall (to which you say yes). But that just brings you back to my first suggestion of turning windows firewall off lol.

A:hp pavillion running windows 10 has suddenly become so slow

sabrahamse Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about your laptop running really slow in Win10 and wanted to help. I should mention that years ago, I used ESET AV on my PC, and I noticed that every time I booted it, it would hang up while the app would go out to the ESET server, check for an AV definition update, and if it found one, downloaded and installed that update.  I got really sick and tired of waiting for what seemed like an eternity for my PC to boot, so I uninstlled ESET and the problem went away! My suggestion is to follow these instructions to boot into Safe mode and see if the slowdown persists there: Safe Mode - Start Windows 10 in - Windows 10 ForumsGood Luck

Just today, my computer has been running extremely slow. It was fine yesterday and all week, before that etc... etc..
It runs totally fine is Safe Mode (I'm currently in Safe Mode with networking support) but it's not working at all in Normal Settings. It has only a few second boot time, but once I hit the desktop, Any attempt to open the Start Menu, Start any Application, or even right-click the desktop results in nothing but freezing and the computer freezing up. even Task Manager doesn't do anything.
Please Help! I have no idea why this is happening, I'm usually pretty computer savvy and I can fix my own computer problems, but this one is beyond my scope.

A:My computer (Windows 7) Is suddenly running slow.

Does it freeze forever, or is it just super slow (after it freezes, leave it alone for 30 minutes to see if it unfreezes)?
If you're able:
Open up Task Manager (taskmgr.exe) and select the option to view process' for all users (the long button in the lower left of the processes tab)
Then click on the VIew...Select Columns entry - and select I/O Reads and I/O Other
Then sort by the CPU, Memory, I/O Reads, and I/O Other columns - look for the process name of the highest couple in each category.
Let us know them and we'll move on from there.
Another thing to try is this free program:  http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Use it to disable all non-Windows shell extensions.  Reboot to see if it helps.
If it does, then re-enable ½ at a time and see if you can find the problem one in that way (by ½'s)
Post back with the results and we'll see what else we can do.

Running WinXP with SP3.

Problem. When I open the explorer and click to expand, say, Program Files, it takes a full minute to generate the directory.

Background. I just reinstalled Windows on a new drive and everything worked fine, including Windows Explorer. Windows Messenger was automatically also installed, I think with SP3. It was annoying to have it in the system tray, so I Googled for ways to remove Messenger. Found a link that said to run this command (I don't claim to understand what it means):RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
After running this command, I read on, only to learn later that I should exit Windows Messenger before running the command, or it might affect processes that depend on Messenger. Too late. The deed was done.

It was right after this that Windows Explorer started running slow.

Attempted solution. Downloaded and installed Windows Messenger 4.7 (same version that was previously installed). This didn't help. Explorer still takes a very long time to generate directories on first use.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to what I might try next. I've already thought of a repair install and will try it if I can't find anything less drastic to try.

Thank you.

A:Windows Explorer suddenly running slow

Uninstall Messenger with the Revo uninstaller. Be sure to use the advanced option and remove all traces of Messenger. Now restart. If Explorer is still acting weird, then go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow the Windows File Protection window pops up. You may need your Windows XP CD for this. It will now copy all the system files it needs to run correctly.

I have had this new laptop for about a month. It's a gaming laptop and I've had no problems until today. Startup which usually takes about 20 seconds from power on to all startup programs functional, now takes 3 minutes with desktop items taking a long time to display.

Upon completion of startup, chrome browser still takes several seconds to open when previously it was instantaneous. New webpages take 20-30 seconds to open when speedtest.net shows a download speed of 31mbps.

Simply opening a program or an Adobe document takes way too long, with the blue spinning circle icon all too present in the simplest of tasks.

I downloaded AVG Free and ran a full scan which reported clean bill of health. I then bought AVG PC Tune Up. I have cleaned the registry, defraged the registry, optimized start up and shutdown, and defraged the hard drive.

I know this is a common problem but with many different causes, which is why I thought to start a new thread. When I ran an Event Log it came up with a lot of Warnings and Critical which I know nothing about. Thanks very much, if someone could please let me know what I should do next. Really don't want to do a clean install if possible.

I attached a .txt of the event log if this helps.

Scan for both malware and spyware. For spyware use a program called superantispyware; download, install and run the program at the following link:

SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloading File

also; scan for malware using malwarebytes:

Also; you might want to defrag the hard drive if it has not been done in awhile: start, programs, accessories, system tools, defragmenter

I have a duo centrino PC running windows vista. My laptop was working well up until last week when I shut down the computer without any problems. The next time I started it, I noticed it was running EXTREMELY slowly and It was taking 10 to 15 minutes to start basic programs such as internet explorer or word. I tried running McAfee figuring the computer may have acquired a virus. When I would try to run a full scan, it would give me an error saying that a file was missing and the scan could not be run. So I figured the computer had a virus. I went to safemode and the computer runs with good speed in safemode. I tried to reinstall McAfee but it can not be installed in safemode. I tried installing it in regular mode but when I click on setup file, nothing happens. Could it be that a virus is preventing me from installing McAfee? The fact that the operating speed is good in safe mode but extremely slow in regular mode be related to a virus? Would really appreciate your input on how I can get my computer back. Please see the DDs.txt log as well the zip file that was rquested from me. Really appreciate your help.
