Q: I want to replace old hard drive, but can't find recovery fi...

Hello, The hard drive in my computer has ceased to properly function. Thus, i want to replace it. However, since this is a pre-built computer, it seems that I am limited to the OS provided by you guys. The thing is that I can't find the recovery file on the website or a physical recovery disk on any other website. Is the physical recovery disk still available for this computer? If not, are there any available alternatives? I understand that one such is purchasing a new OS, but that's a little too pricey, which I think doesn't justify sticking with the PC(it's 5 years old after all). So it would be preferable if the available alternatives aren't so expensive. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think that I am hosed. I tried to boot my wifes computer the other day and the bios went through its thing and ended with the following message:

|||||
Error finding btmagic.img
Press any key to continue (I pressed the "any" key)
Partition table invalid.

I tried to boot my Partition Magic cd thinking I could rebuild the partition table. The PM CD is not a bootable CD because the it falls through to the above message.

I tried booting off the SUSE 10 CD and install a text system to try to repair the problem. It tells me that the partitioning tool in SUSE is not the same one used to do the partitioning and so it cannot continue.

I then tried to boot the Windows XP Home CD. When I try to go to recover console it says no hard drive was found and blows me out. Same for install.

I am not sure what to try next short of installing a new harddrive and not sure how to get my data off the old one.

Any and all suggestions will be most welcome.

If you have PM installed you should be able to make a set of boot disks to possible fix the partition tables.

If you have a recovery drive - that includes the recovery partition - made on one computer, but have a toshiba laptop with a bad drive (but the recovery partition is ok), can you replace/copy the partition on the recovery drive with the recovery partition from the bad laptop HD?

My friend's laptop would not boot, and would not factory recover, reset, or refresh. I tried to clone the hard drive before I started messing with the disc. It would not clone, but I was able to copy the recovery partition to a USB drive.

He never make recovery discs, so could not re-install, but I can borrow the recovery drive that my aunt made for her laptop.

A:replace recovery partition in recovery drive?

There may be a couple problems with that. The Factory Image is too large to be just copied to a Fat32 partition, so it has to be divided in sections. You could do that using DISM and put the .swm files in the sources folder. Not even a guess as to whether it would work.

There is other information concerning the configuration of the computer making the recovery drive. If it was made on a different computer, that info would probably be incorrect and not allow a reset.

I have never tried, but you might be able to copy the Factory image to a drive formatted as NTFS and then set the recovery to look for that file for a reset. Maybe you have already copied the entire recovery partition...

If you assume the factory image is the same for both systems, can you copy the entire Recovery Image partition from the bad drive to the good drive?

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

That would be the idea if you have it set to boot from disk in the system BIOS. The CD/DVD must have first priority over the HDD to boot.

I have a customer's Satellite L305D S5895 laptop. This was shipped to me by the customer who tried to install Windows XP Pro, Vista and none would install. He said he tried all installation CDs he had and finally gave up on it and shipped it to me.

When I got it the partition were deleted so I tried to install Win 7 and when I do doing a custom install I get an error saying the hard drive can't be formatted on disk 0 or it will give an error that no hard drives were found.

I reset the bios to default and no matter what I do it won't format or find the harddrive. I was going to upgrade the bios but the only way I found to upgrade the bios is after windows is installed. There is no way to make changes to the bios for settings that would have to do with the hard drive. This has a Toshiba MK2546GSX (S1) hard drive.

When installing Win 7 I get the normal windows, "windows is starting", "Select Language", "Select System", "Type of install", "Custom Install", "Delete partitions", "New Partitions", "Format", then the error message "Windows cannot format a partition on disk 0. Error: 0x80070057"

This happens regardless what system I try to install. I've tried two different versions of XP, one of Vista and 3 Win 7 and each time a different install CD.

A:Can I replace my C hard drive?

Its possible for sure and not too hard either.

Once you have the drive you want to install it will either come with software or you can download free software from the manufacturer of the drive to clone the old hard drive to the new drive. Once cloned just disconnect the old drive and connect the new drive in its place and everything should be as it was but with more space.

You can then add the old drive back in a secondary drive for additional storage.

As a example if you buy a Seagate drive you can use DiscWizard from Seagate to migrate your system over to the new drive: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

You can also use third party paid programs with a greater range of options such as Acronis TrueImage or Symantec's Ghost to clone the drive.

I've been supporting this Power Mac G4 since it was new in June of 2002.
Other than installing a SCSI card for the photo printer and the occasional cleaning, it's worked flawlessly.
It's in daily use for editing and annotating Aerial photos.
Yesterday I had to reinstall Illustrator for a weird parsing error I've never seen before, and it got me to thinking that the HD has been used heavily for nearly 6 years.
This machine is the backbone of this small business, and they're willing to do what's necessary, so my question is whether it's a good idea to preemptively replace this HD.
6 years seems like a long run to me, but I've never replaced an HD based on age alone, so what do the experts think?

Hi there,

I'm turning to this great forum in the hope I can get valuable advice (greatly appreciated) about a recent hardware issue I have. My lenovo T430 laptop was taking an hour or longer to boot up, so much that I was scared to shut down. In the end, I ordered a windows 10 pro reinstall cd but at windows setup, I had the following error - "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The disk may fail soon. If other hard disks are available, install Windows to another location". I spoke to microsoft online support and they simply recommended a repair shop or replace the hard drive. When I asked about replacing with an SSD drive, the assistant agreed that was probably the best solution.

So my question (excuse it if it's a dumb one) is, can I simply open the back, take out the hard drive and put the SSD drive in? What I mean is, I don't have to keep the old hard drive as well as the SSD? I've copied all important files off the laptop and have the rest in online storage so I'm not worried about losing anything on the old hard drive. I just wondered if it was as easy as taking out the old one and putting in an SSD.

It might be the answer is simply 'yes' to that, in which case, great! Otherwise, if more technical work is required, then I will do so. There's loads of online videos showing how to install an SSD but I was worried that if I put it in then it doesn't work I'd be completely clueless.

Thanks
Paul

HI,The Samsung 850 evo, pro have  been voted the best hard drives prize/performance by international PC magazines. If you have the Windows 10 disk you can use it to install the OS on the SSD, you will not even need the product key if windows 10 has already been installed previously on the PC as it will (the same edition) be automatically activated once installed and connected to internet (just click on do not have product key when prompted). You can also insert your product key.You can also download the media creation tool from Microsoft and by running this tool download  original copy of windows 10 iso or create a bootable USB pendrivefrom Microsoft. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Personally I like to perform a clean install (custom install) without recovery drive and get all the most recent drivers from HP site or if necessary from the manufacturer of the device. Here is where you can get drivers for windows 10 for your PC:http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-touchsmart-17-j100-quad-edition-notebook-pc-... Let me know if you need further help,David

1. What type of hard drive do I need to replace it (found many on ebay) the original is 30 gb.

2. Is there any problem with replacing it with say a larger hard drive (60 or 120 gb)?

3. Will it come with windows xp already on it or can I simply load it from the disk that came with the computer?

It seems fairly simple to replace......or am I missing something?

I received a Samsung SSD as a gift and would like to swap out my hard drive.  Looking at documentation (or lack of), on-line at HP and the internet at large, there is no information on how to access my hard drive.  I tried the basics - remove the battery, remove the multi-media bay, remove the screws from the bottom, but after that, I am at a loss.   Looking at videos and documents for other HP latops, it appears that I should remove the 3 small screws above the media bay, but I have 7 or so (going from memory).   Suppose I did that... then what?  Any help or guidance is MUCH appreciated.

A:How do I replace my Hard Drive?

Hi, Please use the 4th manual (page 60) on the following link:     http://support.hp.com/sg-en/product/hp-15-ay100-notebook-pc/12499456/manuals Regards.

I have two laptops, a ThinkPad T30 and a Latitude C840 (they are both working with XP SP2, except the T30 doesn't have a screen). I'd like to move the T30's drive into the C840, but when I do this, the C840 will hang right after the BIOS screen (incl. the XP CD's Press a key to boot off the CD if I tell it to boot from the disc drive first).

My first thought was to try Recovery Console from the XP CD. I can log into the install, and I've already tried fixmbring and fixbooting it. This doesn't help.

This leaves the option of the drivers not being right. I installed the C840 chipset drivers, nothing.

I'd really rather not go on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what'll get things up and running, so can you guys gimme a suggestion?

Thanks!
Ethan

A:Moved hard drive and cannot boot; hard drive accessable from Recovery Console

You can't simple move one drive from one machine to another because the drivers are specific to the hardware. Did you receive recovery CDs for the Latitude? If so, you could use them to "restore" it to its factory default with the new drive. This may actually be on a partition of the hard drive.
As an alternative, you could create an image of the original drive and restore it to the new one using some freeware such as DriveImage XML. To restore the image to the new drive, you'll need to boot to a bootable CD using something like UBCD4WIN and restore the image from somewhere on your network.

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

A:Dropped hard drive should I replace it?

They should be fine, the heads aren't above the platters like they are if you drop/bump it while its running. If they were in the box when they fell then I'm sure you will be fine, they are packaged to take a beating during shipping.

Even if they aren't you could either return them to the store, or RMA them.

Hi. I received the laptop (HP pavilion x360 15-bk193ms)  this week. I noticed that especially during heavy hard drive loads (boot up for example), the hard drive (which I assume is right under the B&O sign on the top right of the keyboard), makes this crackling noise (the kind an old hard drive makes). I wished to get this fixed which is why I contacted HP to place a repair order. Since they will be replacing the hard drive, would it be possible to replace the 1 TB hard drive with an equivalent cost SSD or say a 256 GB SSD with me paying the difference in cost ? I would really appreciate it if this could be done. The hard drive is the slowest part of this laptop. It does not make sense logically or financially to have this hard drive replaced with another one and then replace that again with an SSD.
