I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to repair a Dell Dimension 2400 computer that belongs to my brother. I am fairly knowledgeable of computer building/repair, because I build my own. However, I have never dealt with a Dell Computer before. From the symptoms he describes, my first suspect for failure is the power supply. I have a spare 450 watt ATX power supply in my closet that I would like to sub into it for troubleshooting, however, I see that some Dell Computers use a proprietary supply and that a standard ATX supply will cause damage. From what I see on the internet, it looks like they used proprietary PS's on older machines only. Anyone have an idea whether this computer uses a standard ATX PS or whether you must use a specific Dell PS? Thanks for your time and assistance.

A:Dell Dimension 2400 Problems

Dimension 2400 does not use a proprietary PSU. A standard ATX PSU will do.

I just got a used Dell Dimension 2400. I had been using an older Dell (the one i'm on now) with a P3 1.0 MHz set. On this dimension 2400, I installed Win XP Pro which I also installed on the machine i'm using now, same disc, so it does work. I tried to hook up a dsl modem, just like the setup I use on this older computer. The Dinension does not even recognize that a modem is hooked up. Also, I tried to play a sound, a wav file, and error message says format unplayable. Windows says there is no sound device installed, when it came installed with the computer, I can see it, along with the ethernet which does not seem to work either. I am at a loss as to what to do. The modem is a basic one, not a router. It has usb capabilities, but when I tried to connect with that, windows acknowledged the modem then asked for drivers which I have no clue about ( and i'm not sure if it wanted drivers for the modem or the usb). Can anyone tell me what is the problem? Or any of the problems? lol. Thank you.

A:Dell Dimension 2400 Problems

You need to install the motherboard drivers for Ethernet and sound. Windows has the USB drivers. You should be able to get the drivers from Dell's website. Did you get any discs with the 2400?

Hi Guys,

Have got a problem with my oldish Dell Dimension 2400.

Yesterday, the monitor didn't come on when I turned the PC on. (Absolutely NOTHING had been changed since it was turned off the night before).

I disconnected the monitor, and plugged it while not connected to the PC and it didn't do anything.

I had a spare monitor in the loft, so I tested that that one and it worked on it's own, so I connected it to the Dell.

It worked, YIPPEE (I thought) all fixed.

But you already know that's not the end of the story.

After working for a day the second monitor stopped.

I disconnected it and as with the first monitor there is no responce.

It looks like my Dell has some fault which is destroying Monitors.

So here I am today, unable to use the Dell, and dare not connect another monitor to it for fear of destroying it.

Could I buy an "older style" Graphics Card and put it in?

Will the PC use the new card automatically, as I have no screen to set up a new card.

Or is there something else I should try first?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I am installing Windows 7 on my parents computer. I just did a fresh install (not an upgrade) and ran into a problem.

I downloaded the drivers from the Dell website, and figured it would solve my problem of not being able to change the resolution. It didn't.

Now I am stuck. Is this computer just not able to handle Windows 7? Any help is greatly appreciated! I'm about to pull my hair out!

A:Dell Dimension 2400 - Resolution Problems

Update: I was able to change the resolution by going to:

Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings > List All Modes > 1024 by 768, 256 colors, Default Refresh

It was originally set to 640 by 480, High Color (16 bit), Default Refresh.

Now, the colors are terrible! I can barely read anything. Any suggestions on what driver I am missing?

Recently i just purchased a GeForce FX 5500 and it has a 8x AGP connector the problem i have is that on my Dell Dimension 2400 Motherboard there is NO 8x AGP slot, BUT to make things more difficult there IS in fact an area for an 8x AGP slot to be placed. I went to a store and there didnt have any slots so i can attach it to my motherboard. EITHER:

A) FIND and PURCHASE a 8x AGP Slot to connect to my motherboard

B) FIND and PURCHASE another motherboard that is similar to the dell dimension 2400 series motherboard----but from here should just get a new case and rebuild the computer but use the same parts that i already have on?

Please post something and let me know what i should do because it would be very helpful

A:Dell Dimension 2400 MOtherboard Problems HELP ASAP

I don't think it's possible to just solder on a agp slot, unless you are VERY skilled (like a genius in electronics engineering or something).
I replaced my dell 2300's board with a gigabyte 8IG1000MK, but there are many possible replacements. If you get a new full atx case, then you could get a full atx board, which has more expansion slots and options, instead of a micro atx board.
If you get a full atx case, then this board would be nice.

If you keep your dell case, you'd need a micro atx board, like these.
Getting the board to work with the dell case takes a little modification though.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP installed. Whenever I start it up, the BIOS screen goes fine, but then it gets to a screen like in this picture: https://forum.acronis.com/de/system/...ack_screen.jpg . Whenever I press enter on the "Start Windows Normally" or "Last Known Good Configuration" options, the screen just freezes and doesn't boot into Windows. I also cannot use safe mode because when I choose it, it loads files up to "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\system.log" and then just stops. Any ideas on how I can get this thing to boot? I cannot repair or reinstall my version of Windows, because I don't have a Windows XP installation CD.
Specs of the machine:
512 MB RAM
??? GB PATA IDE (I can't check the amount)
Windows XP SP3
I don't know the other specs (Video Memory, Graphics Card, etc.) as I cannot start Windows to see.

Following a terminal BSOD on a Dell Dimension 2400, I have replaced the HDD and re-installed XP SP2 Home Edition using an OEM CD image supplied by Forum Member.

Installation seemed to go okay and I visited the Dell UK website to download the Driver software for the network card so I could get Online and complete the Updates.

Upon trying to install the driver software this is where my problems started.

At first I get the following error code:

"1607: Unable to install InstallSheild Scripting Runtime"

To resolve I first tried to install "isscript.msi" (which I downloaded off the internet) but I get an error stating that "Windows Installer could not be accessed".

Taking advice, I then I went to services.msc and Started "Windows Installer" (which is set to Automatic but Stopped).

I then tried to install "isscript.msi" and it installs sucessfully.

I now go back to attempting to install my network card driver and I get the following error code:

"1608: Unable to create InstallDriver instance, Return code -2147221021"

It was then suggested that I ensure the DCOM is running. Again I went to "services.msc" and Started this service.

I now had another go at installing the Driver and it is successful!

Now here's the thing... If I goto Device Manager the Network Card does not have a Question Mark against it and appears to be installed and working correctly, however,

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 1.6ghz 1gb RAM with XP Pro on it for several years now. It has many programs installed on it. I purchased a faster used Dell Dimension 8400 3.6ghz hyperthreading 3gb RAM with XP Pro on it.

My question is simple. My Dimension 2400 has an IDE hard drive and the 8400 has SATA. Rather than spend days re-installing and tweaking all of the programs on the 8400 I tried the following. I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. It would not boot, I tried a repair install, then while booting I get a blue screen stop Error 0x0000007B. What do I have to do to fix this so it will boot? What else is it looking for?

A:Dell dimension 2400

The Dell Dimension 2400 desktop appears to be 8 - 10 years old, so reverting it back to its original factory condition is going to revert it back to a very outdated condition.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

What's the exact version of Windows XP(including any service pack number) that's on the Microsoft COA sticker?

The Windows operating system would be loaded first, then any necessary device drivers would be loaded next.

Make sure to first disconnect any unnecessary external devices, such as a printer.

I have an old dell dimension 2400- and to my knowledge is riddled with viruses- which sits unused as it takes too long to do anything, turning on alone is atleast 11 hour. My knowledge of computers is limited but, correct me if im wrong, i was going to replace the hard drive to remove the viruses. It would also be great if you could recommend other new hardware to improve it so it is useable. It would be perfect if I could upgrade it to be more powerful than my laptop so the laptop could be used for mainly portable purposes and the Dell for games etc. As i said my knowledge is limited so if someone could explain how i would go about these upgrades/send me a link to a video explaining it i would be extremely grateful. Money isnt a huge issue but obviously the cheaper the better.
Thanks in advance for any help you can supply.

I would like to know which processor for the Dell Dimension 2400 can use the highest number of ram size and what the size of the compatible ram is. As of now, my Dell Dimension 2400 has the Intel Pentium 4 and I want to make my computer faster.
The Dimension 2400 supports a maximum of 2gb [2x1gb modules] of DDR RAM.
The Dimension 2400 can use either 400MHz or 533MHz, Socket 478, P-4 Northwood, or Celeron processors with a 512k or smaller cache.
The maximum processor size is a Socket 478 Northwood P4 3.06GHz 533MHz FSB processor.
The 2400 will not take Prescott processors [1mb cache].
Prior to upgrading the processor check that the latest BIOS version is installed, with BIOS version A03 Updated CPU microcode was added to support latest CPUs.

yes, for what you need try the ATI radeon 9250 good budget friendly pci card. unless you want to use Aero, then you need a card with Pixel shader 2.0 support, im not sure if the 9250 has pixel shader 2.0.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 computer. This system comes with an Intel Celeron 2.7 GHz processor 256 MB of ram and a 70GB hard drive. The other day I was reinstalling Windows Xp on this system. Everything was going ok for about 30 minutes when all of the sudden the computer just shut itself off. I did some investigating and found that my heatsink was so hot to the touch I could not hold it without a pair of gloves on. I removed the heatsink and processor and I noticed that the thermal compound was very runny almost like water.

I have not had any issues before this with this computer. Can anyone inform me why my heatsink got that hot and why my thermal past got like that?

I am going to apply new Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.

A:Dell Dimension 2400

Check your fan. With the Dell passiver cooling system the fan must be working perfectly to pull enough air across the heatsink for cooling. I don't recall exactly how any air inlets are arranged on the chassis, but pull the front cover and make sure everything is clean for air to enter the case.

Hi all

I have an 8 year old Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows 7 on. I decided I wanted to bring a bit more life to it as it will be used again for a while. So I want to upgrade the graphics card, CPU and ram and also maybe a faster IDE hard drive, I do know quite a bit about computers its just that I don't know whether the following graphics card will work in my Dell properly.

The graphics card I found is a ATi Radeon HD5450 PCI not PCI-E http://www.amazon.co.uk/ATI-Radeon-...n/dp/B008R835KO/ref=?ie=UTF8&m=A11UYXL65U9RAB I don't see how it wont work. but any suggestions will be appreciated. But I would like the graphics card to be able to run Windows 7 Aero. Which this card does support. I have also found some graphics cards with the same GPU but less memory 512MB DDR2 would this graphics card be more compatible with my Dell?

Also the CPU I have in my Dell is an Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz I would like to upgrade this to an Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.06GHz which I have had a look around on various websites and the Dell website and I think this will work?

Any help about the graphics or any suggestion will be appreciated

A:Dell Dimension 2400 Upgrade

Being that its an 8 year old computer i think you would be better off getting another newer computer than putting money into a computer that old.And by a newer computer it doesnt have to be brand new theres lots of good used or reconditioned refurbished computers out there that might have what you are looking for and will be a lot faster.I had a dell dimension 2400 at one time and if i remember correctly it came with windows xp.Running windows 7 on it might be the problem right there as well as the age of the computer itself. If all the ram you have now is 512mbs im amazed that windows 7 is running at all because thats the minimum for running xp properly.

Dell Dimension 2400: What DVD drive can I get?

Edit: Ok, so I need a new DVD Drive. I have no idea what I can get that can go in my Dell Dimension 2400. If you need to, read my post below mailup's.

Information: I have a Dell Dimension 2400 PC2700. I have updated it to 1.25G RAM and added a Nvidia GeForce 6200 Graphics Card. All other hardware, however, (including my DVD/CD-ROM) are still the standard ones that come with the Dell.

My problem: I never used my computer for DVDs, and when I bought Sims 3 and tried installing it, the DVD/CD-ROM drive wouldn't read it. I'm thinking it's probably because the game is in a DVD-ROM disc and my drive simply can't read them since all my other games have been CD-ROM. However, when I check in the Device Manager under the "Properties" of My Computer it clearly says "DVD/CD-ROM Drive." I tried updating it and checking to see if was disabled or recently changed but I got no results. I haven't used it for DVDs before, so have no point of reference as to what I might've accidentally done to mess it up. What should I try to get results? Also, in the event that there is no hope and that I need to buy a new drive, which one(s) are going to be the ones compatible with my computer and able to play DVD-ROMs?

A:Dell Dimension 2400: DVD-ROM not working

The way I see it is either the drive is not a DVD drive or it is and something is wrong with the DVD laser. Either way you need a new drive.

You need to look for an IDE DVD drive. There many to choose from including DVD burners or just DVD readers.

Yes, it should be perfectly fine.
The key points are that your board supports only northwood core cpus(not prescott), and that it can take only 400 an 533 fsb cpus(not 800fsb).

A:Dell Dimension 2400 will not power up

Assuming that you replaced the power supply with a compatible Dimension 2400 'known' working unit.
Are there any 'Beeps'?
If you are comfortable working around computers, you could try the following:

As the power supply was replaced with a 'known' working unit, remove the power cord, hold the power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power.
Remove all the PCI cards, the video card [if applicable], memory, all peripherals, disconnect the data and power cables to all the drives, check that the front panel cable is connected to motherboard, with nothing else connected to the system, reconnect the power cable and power the system on.If there is no difference in the diagnostic lights, 'Beep' codes and/or the LED indication of the power button, then it would appear that the motherboard has died and/or maybe the processor.
Note: The good news is, processors rarely fail, as the only method I know of checking a processor, is to install it a compatible working PC, or use a known working processor.
The Dimension 2400 Owners Manual,Troubleshooter and Diagnostic Guide, is here:http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-2400_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

Have Dell swap your internet device with a new unit, sounds as if the one you received is faulty.
That's a good start to seeing if the problem is computer related.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400. I currently have 1Gb of RAM installed (2x 512Mb). Recently, I visited the Crucial website to system scan my computer. Unexpectedly, I found out that my system can hold up to a maximum of 2GBs! I couldn't believe it so I did some more researching. Most of the sites, (crappy memory sites), and they all say it can only hold 1GB. I would really really like to have 2Gbs or Ram. But I don't want to go and spend all that money and find out I can only use 1. I need help with knowing whether I can get 2gbs of ram. If anyone has a 2400, please give me some info. Thanks.

Hi all,
I hope someone can help me. I have a Dell Dimension 2400. It was working fine. It was shut down properly. The next day when I press the button to turn on, it did nothing at all. No green light on the outside of the component. I also notice that the button did not click.

I opened the unit and there is a green light on the mother board on. Does this indicate that the power supply is OK. How can I test the mother board to see if it is that or simply the click button on the component.
I am not a PC whiz. I really appreciate any information from anyone.

The light means that the MotherBoard is getting power. Make sure the power button is securely attached to mother board. Look for any unplugged cables and/or wires

I disconnected my CD-Rom/Optical Drive from my Dell Dimension 2400 desktop PC in order to connect a Hard drive and quickly transfer some files - but once I reconnected the optical drive, the PC doesn't seem to recognize it. I tried resetting my BIOS options to original, but no go.

Can anyone out there help me? I tried another known good optical drive and I know that the IDE cable is good and my BIOS is A05, which is the most current.

I can't figure this out for the world of me. If any of you experts out there have any idea where my next step should be, I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me!

Forgot to mention, both this and the other KG optical drive power up just fine - it's just that the system never recognizes it.

I also got a message when I first connected it that indicated that the PC had found a floppy drive, rather than an Optical Drive. I don't have a floppy, so that was a bit confusing to me, and nothing is recognized when I put a CD in it.

Thanks, again!

A:CD-ROM Issues with Dell Dimension 2400

What else changed about your system. 10 to 1 you wont have problems like this just from switching your cd drive for a hard drive. I do it all the time and have never had problems. Does it see the drive in the POST? Make sure your bios is set to auto detect everything.

Been toying with the idea of upgrading this older system to W7. Ran thru the upgrade advisor and the major issue is the Intel ® 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics controller. The INTEL website does NOT list this as compatible either. Is this as simple as replacing/upgrading a video card, or is this a chipset on the motherboard?

Is there a way to overcome this limitation?

I've got some games (Age of Empires III) for my kids that they can't play because of the factory graphics card on my Dell Dimension 2400. (No AGP slot)

I'm looking to upgrade the video card and memory. I went to www.systemrequirementslab.com and they suggested some cards like the EVG NVIDIA GeForce 6200 256-P1-N399-LX. I went to www.crucial.com and they suggested
DDR PC3200 CL=3 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR400 2.6V 32Meg x 64 ( I have only two memory slots)
As you know this is not a brand new or top of the line machine and I just want it to play the kids' games so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money. I'd like to do some comparison shopping on bargain sites like boddit.com, bensbargains.net, newegg.com Butt I'm not sure which of those cards or memory sticks would be compatible. Based on the suggestions these other sites have made does anyone have any advice on how I can tell which memory/graphics card would be compatible with my system and the Age of Empires III game? Or if you have a specific bargain graphics card or memory deal please let me know.
Thanks for all the help,

A:Upgrade Dell Dimension 2400

First for RAM, if you are unsure your best bet is to visit www.crucial.com and run the memory test on the site and buy the exact RAM it recomends... you should be able to buy what crucial suggests with the knowledge it is compatible.

As for graphics card, can you give us the minimum spec for the game? (on the back of the box). I think that you need atleast shader model 3 and I don't think this is a vailable on a PCI video card which may stop you playig the game alltogether...

I want to upgrade the 80 Gb HD in my Dell Dimension 2400. I already use an external drive for most of my storage but the internal drive appears to be going bad. I believe the maximum capacity for the unit is 160 Gb but can anyone confirm that? If I install a larger drive than that will it cause any problems even if not all of the drive is accessible? Is there an update that can be done to change the limit?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Im going to start over clocking my machine (first time). I was wondering if anyone else has overclocked a dell dimension 2400 and what types of results they have had. Im going to up it 10 at a time like the faq guide suggests. Then when I get brave ill read up more on the voltage, and attempt to slightly adjust it. Also about ram over clocking, will it help my machine since I already have 2gigs of ram in this old clunker? I noticed while in bios theres agp apperture, I read up and understand what it is. However I dont have a apg slot, I use pci. Would changing this setting even affect my video car?

Ok I found out, supposedly you cant OC my computer. But everything iv read was from like 2004. Is there some kind of program i can use to attempt to oc? Also I'm considering oc my video card. Would my cpu even be able to handle a overclocked video card?

A:Overclocking my dell dimension 2400

I owned a Dell Dimension 3000 which would be the basic thing you've got only a year older (I believe). There are no programs out there that will overclock a machine with no overclocking features. It's a good question, but no can do. When (if) you ever decide to build a computer get an ASUS or some board that has the O'Cing features that you need. G' Luck.

I have been asked to upgrade this dell to improve performance as it has a Pentium 4 processor that runs at 2.66GHz and I think 512-MB Ram. So my Question is...What motherboard should I get, ram etc and would i need to change psu depending on the new equipment you suggest?
Ideally it would be under ?150

A:Upgrade a Dell Dimension 2400

Where are you buying from and what's the PSU in this computer? And what is the computer going to be used for?

At this point, I would suggest an AM3-based system; maybe an Athlon II X4, a cheap AsRock (or similar) motherboard and a 4GB RAM kit. Depending on where you buy it from that should add up to just about ?150. But then again, depending on your needs, maybe a Sandy Bridge based system would be better; it would be good if you gave more specific details of what you need.

I recently came into possession of an old Dell Dimension 2400 that runs perfectly. . . but has a paltry 512MB RAM. Despite it having a Pentium 4, the mobo can only accommodate 2GB of RAM. I want to bring it up to that, but there are 2 memory types that can be used: PC2700 and PC3200. The latter (PC3200) runs at 400Mhz, but has latency of 3.0. The PC2700 runs at at max of 333Mhz, but it's latency is less -- 2.5. I saw a post on a forum that indicated that ANY Pentium 4 had to have a mobo with the 400Mhz or greater front-side bus (FSB), and if that's true, I should buy the PC3200 DIMMs. But this computer is REALLY old, and if the FSB speed is less than 400Mhz, I'd be better off buying the PC2700 DIMMs to get the shorter latency time.

I have tried several times unsuccessfully to find the FSB speed on Dell's site, which is really lame. Does anyone know what the FSB speed is on this mobo?

I was wondering if you guys have any insight as to what's the problem here. I left my computer on (as I always do) and went to work. When I came back home, I found my computer off. I thought to myself, "hmm..that's weird, I know nobody comes into my room or they BETTER NOT...stupid bratty little sister..." Then as I tried to turn it on, it won't turn on. Nothing. Not even a small sign of life.

I took the casing shell off, and tested the power supply. The power supply was okay. I was disappointed when I found out the power supply was okay because that being the one obvious flaw, I don't know what's wrong with my computer anymore. Do any of you guys have any ideas as to what's going on? I will tell you that I leave my computer on for long periods of time which is probably something I shouldn't be doing from now on. Any help is appreciated.

A:My Dell Dimension 2400 PC Won't Turn On

How did you test the power supply???

Not sure of your level of expertise but no disrespect meant, you can only really test an atx power supply by connecting it to another Computer or MB setup on a workbench because the MB controlls the switching on of the power supply.

If you tried a new power supply on your system and you get nothing at all then you have a dead MB.

Its ok to leave your computer on for long periods so long as you' got good ventilation and good cooling fans does not run Hot all the time your pc can be ok.

I am trying to "Killdisk" my HD so I can reinstall Win Xp on my Dell Dimension 2400 computer.

I did reinstall Win Xp many time without any problem in the past, but this time something is totally wrong.

It usually take aprox. 1 hour to reinstall but this time it took 5 hours and in the end:
"13 minutes to finish install"
and it frozes and nothing happen after that, I tryed 5 times with same result.

I guess it got Virus/Malware in the root of computer memory. So I tryed to use Killdisk to clean up and start new to reinstall Win Xp, but I got following resxponse:
"Error loading Free Dos Kernell"

Hi there, i have a (approx) year old dell dimension 2400 desktop pc, and i want to upgrage the ram in it

On cpuz i get this for the ram section

Memory SPD

Memory type DDR-SDRAM
Manufacturer (ID) Samsung (CE00000000000000)
Size 256 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC2700 (166 MHz)
Part number M3 68L3223FTN-CB3
Serial number 410BDE1F
Manufacturing date Week 04/Year 04

Number of banks 1
Data width 64 bits
Correction None
Registered no
Buffered no

Timings table
Frequency (MHz) 133 166
CAS# 2.0 2.5
RAS# to CAS# delay 3 3
RAS# Precharge 3 3
TRAS# 6 7

Now it says pc2700, with a speed of 133mhz, but when i look on novatech for pc2700 RAM, it says it has a speed of 33 mhz, so what im wondering are the two compatable???

Many thanks in advance,

A:What kind of RAM for a DELL Dimension 2400?

It's PC2700 which runs @ 166MHz (333 DDR).

The different frequencies reported in the timings table is just the different supported speeds : 133MHz for PC2100 & 166MHz for PC2700.
