Thinkpad P52S Ultra Dock and 3 External Monitors

Q: Thinkpad P52S Ultra Dock and 3 External Monitors

Hi. I'm hoping I can get this resolved on this forum.I just got my system and am trying to connect my 3 external monitors. My setup is as follows:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 3 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable. - worksMonitor 4 - DP ou to DVI in via a DP-DVI adapter - doesn't work. I can't figure out how to make this work.I also tried this setup:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - VGA out to VGA in - worksMonitor 3 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 4 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable. - doesn't work. Incidentally in this configuration, when I closed the laptop screen this monitor worked. Also on a related note, the Nvidia Quadro P500 is sitting idle as the Intel UHD 620 is doing all the work. How can I control this? Thanks for any suggestions. Sal

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

As stayed in PSREF, P52s supports up to three independent displays. Laptop's screen includes in this limit, meaning you can use two external displays at that time. When you close the lid, you can use three external displays. To use more, you'll need some sort of USB adapter to increase such a limit. Regarding other question, you can't disable Intel GPU - it's always active and it's always controls screen output. NVIDIA's dGPU can be configured to be used in selected applications, making them to work with higher performance. P52 and P72 for sure have an ability to disable Intel iGPU, giving the control of screen output to dGPU. Probably P1 and/or X1 Extreme have the same feature too.

I recently purchased the P52s and the Ultra Docking station.  I am dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Ubuntu 18.04.  I have dual 27" monitors connected to my Ultra docking station, as well as ethernet and power.  The Ultra connects to my P52s via USB-B Type -> USB.  Inititally all was well, but after a week or so,  my Ubuntu stopped seeing the dual monitors, even though the ethernet from Ultra continues to be picked up.   In Ubuntu the "display" only shows the built in laptop display and I cannot force it to detect external monitors. I have updated all the Lenovo drivers via the Windows updaters.  Previous threads seemed focused on other Lenovo products and didn't help me here.

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Hey guys,I've got new P50s (running W10 x64) with Quadro M5000M, and Ultra docking station for it. I want to use 4 external monitors in any configuration, just that they all work. I tried updating BIOS and Docking station, installed latest Intel and Nvidia graphics driver, power management driver.. everything.I get 4 monitors displayed in Windows display settings, but as soon as I turn on the fourth, one of the others goes dark. Somewhere I read about BIOS setting for Hybrid graphic, but I don't have such setting in BIOS. Any help would be great Thanks!

I have a ThinkPad T580 with the Ultra Dock (40AJ0135US) and I'm wanting to use two external 4k monitors. I found this post (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/How-many-DisplayPorts-are-available-on-t...) that seems to indicate that this cannot be done, but it doesn't make sense since the dock utilizes two USB-C connections from the T580. Can a DP and USB-C on the dock be used for two 4k monitors? Is there any combination of ports that would allow the dock to support two 4ks? Will Lenovo be releasing a monitor compatibility matrix soon for their new laptop lineup, like this one: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd029622#USB-C%20dock ? I appreciate any help!

Hi there,I've got a new T470 and Ultra Dock and try to connect my 2 external monitors via DisplayPort but nothing happens.I tried to update the firmware of the Ultra Dock but it won't work because I got the following error message in den update.log: "Error description: Can't connect to Synaptics VMMxxxx DP hub IC"The 2 monitors were still connected to the Ultra Dock. So I connected one of those monitors vie HDMI and installed the Firmware again. Now I got the current version 2.33.000 installed. But as soon as I remove the HDMI cable nothing happens again. What else can I do? Do I have an issue with my Ultra Dock?

Checking to see if anyone has had this issue. We have 5 T570 20JW, running the most current verison of Windows 10Pro and since Yesterday (9/18/17), whenever a user undocks their laptop and then redocks it the external monitors do not turn back on and Windows does not recognize the 2 displays either. The only way we have been able to get them to show back up is to either reseat one or both of the monitor cables from the dock or put the laptop into sleep mode and then wake it backup using the docking station power button. It's not the displaying drivers causing the issue, at least not directly as we have tried the most current and the last release and neither fix the issue and as I stated this just started on 9/18 and the most current drivers are a few months old now. My only guess is that it's one of the 5 lenovo updates that where installed yesterday or the latest bios update (See the attached picture). I haven't had the chance yet to uninstall each of the 5 updates because I will need to go download the last version of each of them first, but wanted to see if any one else has had this happen and to forwarn anyone that has one to be careful with the most current updates. Thanks, Joseph

I have a Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station (40A20170US). Here is the set up I am trying to get to work:Display 1) VGA Planar PL2010M monitorDisplay 2) DVI Planar PL1910M monitorDisplay 3) DisplayPort Lenovo L2251x Wide monitorDisplay 4) LCD monitor (off) When I have selected Standard Mode under the BIOS display settings, I am able to connect two monitors plus the internal LCD at the same time: one on VGA and the other on DVI, or I can connect one on VGA and the other on DisplayPort.  This allows me to have three displays, including the LCD.  My problem is that I am unable to get a third monitor to work as well.  When I connect a monitor via DisplayPort, the monitor on DVI stops working.  After reading forum posts and whatever else I found online, I learned (maybe I'm incorrect?) that I need to switch to Advanced Mode in the BIOS to be able to use three external monitors.   I then uninstalled drivers (the BIOS instructions state that you are supposed to uninstall graphics drivers before switching to Advanced Mode), switched to Advanced Mode in the BIOS, started up the computer, reinstalled the latest drivers, but now the only screen working is my laptop's LCD screen.  None of monitors are detected by Windows no matter what I try. When I switch back to Standard Mode in the BIOS, two of my external monitors begin working again. My docking station firmware is updated FYI.   Any suggestions ... Read more

A:Unable to connect to 3 monitors to Ultra Dock (Thinkpad W540) in Advanced Mode BIOS Setting

So I fixed the issue for myself and just wanted to post in case somebody else had the same issue.  I took the following steps to fix the issue:[Background: BIOS is in "Standard" display mode to begin with; I had already updated the docking station's firmware first with a program called fwdphb03.exe and then with Lenovo's update utility.]1) In Windows, I uninstall drivers for the Intel Graphics and K1100 dedicated card.2) Restart, go into BIOS, switch to "Advanced" mode under the Display tab.  I also have the option selected to start up on the docks in the BIOS Display tab.3) Booted into Windows (8.1) and it looked like the Intel Graphics drivers were automatically downloaded. I then ran Lenovo's System Update utility to get the latest video drivers.  Under the optional tab in the Lenovo update utility, I selected the "Optimus" drivers and hit download/install.  It installed, and I had to restart.4) Booted into Windows again, ran Lenovo update utility again, and again it had a video driver to install when I checked for updates.  I installed that, had to restart again.5) Booted into windows, checked screen resolution and saw that no external monitors were showing.6) I then decided to get a driver straight from the source.  Downloaded: the following file from  Nvidia: 334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe.  I ran the installation, it did a "Clean" installation with everything checked off. My company has issue me a Lenovo T470s and an Ultra Dock to replace my existing equipment. I have two external monitors connected to the docking station with display port cables. The problem that I am experiencing is that if the laptop is docked and the cover is open, I get video on the laptop display and one external monitor. The other external monitor gets no signal and goes to sleep. If I close the laptop cover, I get video on both external monitors. A co-worker told me that this was working as designed and that the solution for getting video on all three monitors was to connect one external monitor to one of the display ports and the other to the DVI port. (He hadn't tested this configuration and is using two display ports with the laptop cover closed.) I tried my coworker's suggestion and got the same result but prior to switching to DVI, I downloaded and installed the latest(?) driver for the HD Graphics 620 adapter from this website (lenovo.com) and that seemed to solve the problem (when using two display ports) but after shutting the laptop down, I had the same issue the next day. What I want, is to have the laptop cover open and still be able to use two external monitors and get optimal resolution on all three monitors. What's the best configuration for achieving this? (Don't guess, like my co-worker. Give me something you've tested and that you can confirm that it works.)

I have the exact same equipment at home and at work and yet the resolution on my second monitor at work will not go to the 3840 x 2160 that I have at home. Both locations have:1. X1 Yoga (first gen, model number 20FQ002YUS) -- It's the same laptop that I take between home and work2. ThinkPad OneLink+ Dock (model number DU9047S1)3. Two (2) Asus monitors (model number PB287Q) that go to 3840 x 2160 max resolution, connected to the OneLink+ Dock via DiplayPort cables I've been running this configuation with NO PROBLEM at home for the past 9 months.  So I recently purchased a new OneLink+ Dock and two new monitors for my work office and while one monitor will go to 3840 x 2160, the other will not go above 1920 x 1080, UNLESS, I use a mini DisplayPort cable from the second monitor directly into the X1 Yoga (bypassing the OneLink+ Dock) HERE'S WHAT'S BAFFLING: I assumed it was the dock and so I brought the one from home to work and found I had the SAME problem, suggesting it was the second monitor.   But I exchanged the second monitor for a new one and still have the same problem.  The docks are running the most current firmware. I'll send a gift card to your favorite coffee house if you can solve this mystery.  Thanks!

I have a few thousand Ultra Dock scattered across NA. We are in the process of replacing all laptops attached to existing docking stations. Before we can send someone to replace the laptops,we need to know exactly how the monitors are connected to each existing computers/docking stations. The monitor connections maybe VGA, DVI, HDMI or DP, I need to determine how each monitor is connected to the computer/docking station. This is so that I can ensure that the correct cables and monitors are sent to each location. We are using a 3rd party software to determine how monitors are connected to computers/docking stations. They use details collected from Windows to detect the monitor connection type and it works perfectly on all computers and docking stations. However, what we have noticed is that on the Ultra Dock no matter what monitor connection type (VGA, DVI, HDMI, or DP) is used, the Ultra dock always shows that they are connected via DisplayPort (DP). My questions are:Is this a known issue with Ultra docks? Is there a way to have the Ultra dock show the true monitor connection type? If so how can this be done?

Dear Community, my employer will soon change my equipment from a stationary PC to a ThinkPad T450s with Ultra Dock 90 W. The maximum resolution/refresh rate table for the Dock can be found here and shows that it is not possible via the Dock outputs as I understand. But is there another way? Perhaps by using the ThinkPads own video output and two of the Docks outputs? Or any othder idea? I would buy another docking station or other equipment to connect my monitors if that was a solution. Thank you very much for your support!

I have T570 and two same "thinkpad ultra dock" docking stations - one at the office and the other at home- with two monitors connected on each of them (DP & HDMI). At the office, I close the lid (2 screens) and at home I keep it opened (3-screen setup). A while ago it started flickering / blanking external monitors on *both* of them. Sometimes, when computer is left locked for some time (sleep is disabled!) external monitors are blanked and I can only revive them by removing + attaching the laptop to the dock again. I tried firmware updates on dock, driver updates on windows / lenovo... nothing helps. Windows 10, latest updates. I find it weird that two docks would go bad almost simultaneously. What else can I try - it is driving me crazy as I cannot work normally (sometimes it blinks like every minute or so but other times it is OK for more than an hour)?

I have my laptop connected to a generation 2 Thunderbolt 3 dock via the provided cable, and from there I have tried both DisplayPort and HDMI cables (several) to connect to my display. All the technical information I have seen says that my laptop plus the dock should be able to operate at 60Hz even at this resolution, but I'm unable to lock down the settings that enable me to do that. I have pulled the latest BIOS, TB3 FW, display drivers, Intel chipset drivers from the product page.My screen is: AOC U3277FWQ if that matters. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1809. Has anyone battled with the same issue? I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this. The HDMI port on the side is apparently only 1.4 so this would only support the [email protected], but I'm not using it at the moment. Take it out of the dock and charge directly and it works fine, I tried replacing with a new docking station the exact model but again it does not charge the laptop while in the dock, I have switched out the battery and it is still the same. I have fully updated the BIOS etc and still have the same issue, I tried updating the Ultra Dock firmware but run into issues as the firmware update will only run while docked and also has power, but as the laptop is not detecting power I cannot proceed , I tried updating out of the dock but it does not proceed either as it cannot detect the docking station. Everything else works via the docking station HDMI, USB, DVI, Ethernet  all working perfect, has anyone came accross this issue?

I'm trying (and failing) at driving four 1920x1080 monitors vai two DP 1.2 daisy chains. Three monitors show up as available. The fourth does not. Is this not possible? If I'm using both DP ports can I also use one of the HDMI or DVI ports to drive the fourth monitor instead of daisy chaining it? Setup: W550s (Model 20E2CTO1WW)ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock One DP cable to a Dell U2414H-- then daisy changed to a Dell U2412M One DP cable to a another Dell U2414H-- also daisy chained to another Dell U2412M Both U2414H monitors have DP 1.2 enabled. Thanks,Sam

Hello, is it possible to update the Lenovo Ultra Dock Pro to the latest version without a Windows Operating System? https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/documents/ht081248 A bootable ISO for this would be perfect. I use Linux as Operating System installed on a T440p, so a Windows based update is not possible for me. Thanks in advance! Best regrads, Michael

I have a W541 and it always worked well with the dock and dual external monitors, that is until the firmware was updated by Lenovo System Update to the Latest Version: 2.33.000 about a week ago. Now when you boot the laptop in the dock, the post shows on the two external monitors then they go black and seem to disconnect as the power saving icon shows on both monitors. If you undock the laptop at this point and immediately re-dock, the two monitors light up and no more issues. While this isnt a huge issue, it is very annoying since it always worked properly before the update. Any suggestions on a possible fix are much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When connected to the Thinkpad DisplayLink, the driver shuts off useability of the Jack sound ports (on both the computer and the display link). Earlier I could not initiate the driver installation of my USB-ports, and thus could not use the rest of my computers' USB ports -- The Display Links' Ports work. This issue was solved when connencting to the port while the DisplayLink was disconnected.I was connecting a Samsung phone System & Device Firmware/ USB Composite Devices: 10.0.16299.15 peripheral Jack Driver vers. 10.0.16299.15DisplayLink driver vers. 8.3.1905.0USB Root Hub, USB Hub Drivers SuperSpeed and not: 10.0.16299.334USCI USB Connector Manager: 10.0.16299.251eXtensible Host Controller 3.0 10.0.16299.431SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite: 2.12.5.0Phone Driver: Samsung Galaxy S7: 2.9.317.215Realtek Driver: 6.0.1.8224DisplayLink//Lenovo Audio: 8.3.1888.0 most of rest of drivers are firmware vers.: 10.0.16299.15my processor driver vers is 10.0.16299.371

I am running 2 monitors (Dell U2414H @ 1920 x 1080 60Hz) on my ThinkPad USB 3.0 Ultra Dock.  I also have my Yoga 900 monitor on and the desktop is extended to all monitors.  I have a regular issue where the Displayport monitor turns off for 1-3 seconds then comes back on for no apparent reason.  I have searched the internet and the only similar issue I have found suggestes the dock is under powered to run 2 monitors however that does not seem consistent with what other people are doing.  There is no particular application that causes the issue. Can anyone help?  It's very frustrating waiting for the monitors to come back on.

Hi,  I'm using a Lenovo P51 with M2200 graphic card and have a docking station 40A2. I wish to connect the two monitors to my docking station, one is VGA cable and another one is HDMI. When I dock my P51 to the docking station, the monitors could not be detected. I tried to configured my bios setting to discrete graphic setting but nothing changed. Try to put shared on dock display also but nothing works.  When I connected one of the monitor HDMI cable to the laptop directly without going through the docking station, it works perfectly but I could not connect the VGA cable monitor to the laptop without a converter and it defeat the purpose of having a docking station.  Anyone encounter this problem and has a solution for this problem?

Trying to figure out how to charge my Yoga 3, while using my new Thinkpad Ultra docking station. The power USB for the Yoga 3 and docking station USB only work in the Yoga 3 power port. None of the other USB ports on the Yoga 3 will work. Do I need an adapter?
