System info shows wrong model, how to remove grub?

Q: System info shows wrong model, how to remove grub?

I swear I'm never messing with linux again. It's a great operating system when it works, but when it doesn't, it will screw everything up.

OK, so I removed the linux partition from inside windows. But it was still trying to boot into ubuntu, because of grub. Well, I used this recovery cd to try to fix this, but it was a factory recovery cd for an dell laptop (N5050).

Well, the computer is actually a dell inspiron all in one 2305.

I'm currently using windows and it's working correctly, just displaying wrong model (probably wrong drivers as well).

Anyways, linux is still installed and the computer thinks it's a dell laptop.

I forgot to mention one thing, the optical drive doesn't read cd's. But I can boot from a usb.

So, what can I do to fix the situation, and I solemnly swear to never use ubuntu again!

Preferred Solution: System info shows wrong model, how to remove grub?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: System info shows wrong model, how to remove grub?

Just an update, I was able to remove ubuntu and combined the partition with windows, and restore the mbr using easyBCD (Highly recommend it)

How can I make sure that windows recognizes my computer as a dell inspiron one 2305?

Hello. I'm a newbie here. I posted a different problem earlier today, and noticed a new one when I ran the TSG System Info utility. It shows I have PC Cleaner Pro as my antivirus program.

Here is what it says: Antivirus: PC Cleaner Pro, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Disabled

I use AVG, not PC Cleaner Pro. It is an on-demand scanner and I thought it was enabled.

I searched my hard drive for PC Cleaner Pro and it doesn't show up. It isn't listed in my programs, either, so I cannot uninstall it. Is there any way I can get rid of it? Why isn't my AVG information showing, instead?

bruceb3 ... WinDirStat will show what you are looking for.  Download here, from bleepingcomputer.com.

BleepingComputer Review:
WinDirStat scans one or more hard drives and produces a detailed map or the disk making space hogs immediately apparent.
It does this by drawing a rectangle for each file, the relative sizes being decided by the relative sizes of the files. So, a very big file will be a very big box and a small file would be a small box.

Hello all,

I have just finished building my first system form the ground up. My problem is not what I expected, as I was waiting for a major catastrophy...LOL

On post, and in the device manager, the info about my processor is wrong.

Here is what I have:

ECS KT600-A Mobo
Athlon 2400XP
512 Kingston DDR 333
ATI 9000 Pro
WinXP Pro

On post, and in the device manager, it shows that my CPU is only an 1800+ and 1.5 gig. This was bought in a retail box from a respected dealer here, and I understand this to be a 2 gig CPU.

Is there something I have to do in the bios to recognise the full spec of the CPU?

I have been at this all night, and I am now off to bed. I will look for responses in when I get up.

Thanks in advance

When i search any CD in my new WinXP installation, it is adding the user profile path to the actual path of the file being searched on the CD.

Eg: Actual file location is G:\Stuff\test.txt

Search shows wrong the path as below:

C:\Documents and Settings\Siva\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\CD Burning\Stuff\test.txt

Also, the file becomes inaccessible from the search results page.

I wonder that this could be a virus. But when i searched using antivirus, no virus is found.

Kindly help me in resolving this error.

I upgraded my PC from an old Pentium Celeron to an AMD Athlon 64 3200.
When I checked System Info, the processor was correct but it showed 512 mhz at first then went up to 1.00 ghz. The system should read 2.00 ghz as it has in the past.
Does this reflect the actual speed? Why would it be less if this is accurate?
I have SP2 sucessfully installed, shouldn't that take full advantage of my processor?

Hey everyone,

I have a HP nw8240, which I had to put a new motherboard in. I didn't notice whether or not the following was the case before the new motherboard. I bet it was, because I simple restored to a system image.

Anyway, it detects it as being a nc2000. I think that these models potentially share a common motherboard, not sure.

I have the most current BIOS flashed.

Is their anyway to make it detect it as the correct model? Or tick it?

Bought a new 500 Gb hard drive. I created a win7 system image from my old 50 Gb hard drive and restored it to the new drive, but now the new one is showing 50 Gb size with 412 Gb Unallocated!

I tried to "extend volume" from win7 disk manager but the option is greyed out. I don't want to create a new drive letter, just want my existing C drive to reclaim alll of the unallocated stuff.

How can I do this? Thanks.

Hi !

47 MB OEM partition, But what is the 3.33 GB primary partition ?

About the 411 MB unallocated , you download Partition Wizard Bootable CD , burn it in a cd , and boot from it . Choose 1 for resolution . Now when it shows your drive partitions , you select the unallocated space and create a new partition there (If you want to use it as your data partition , format it as logical) .

If there is any further query , please inform . Post back with results

A:GRUB Shows at boot up

Boot with your Win7 installation CD. When prompted, press R to repair or select repair in the GUI if that apears, select your Win7 installation to repair. Probably #1
Enter the administrator password if you are prompted for it.
To repair the MBR, type in this command: fixmbr hit enter
You will get some prompts, type Y and hit enter to carry out the repair.
Type exit to leave the console and then reboot.

You will loose the dual boot for WUBI into Ubuntu, but it will/should get you back into windows bootup. If you are triple booting you may loose that as well.

Welcome to Seven Forums and Happy New Year.
Could you clarify the following?
Are both Ubuntu and Windows on the same HDD or are they on different HDD's?
What was the order of installation -was it Windows first then Ubuntu or the other way round?
Can you log into Ubuntu? Are you able to mount and access Windows from within Ubuntu?
Also have a look at this SF tutorial - Dual Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu

I used to dual-boot XP and Fedora. I didn't use the wonderful method to make linux boot from the windows bootloader like I have in the past because I either couldn't find a guide or couldn't get it to work. Either way, I opted to let Fedora's installer just set up grub for me, and it booted both OS's fine.

A year or two ago, I decided I needed the HDD space more than I needed desktop linux, so I removed Fedora (which was on a separate HDD than XP). When I first installed Fedora, I had to resize the NTFS partition and make a 100MB partition for grub on XP's drive. When I removed Fedora, I didn't mess with grub's partition because it was only 100MB. However, grub remained the default bootloader, and I eventually (yesterday) got annoyed with the wait for it to boot the only OS I still had installed (XP). So I just used XP's disk manager to delete grub's 100MB partition and make my NTFS partition active, thinking it would use XP's bootloader by default then. After a restart, all I got was grub's limited bash shell.

At this point, I turned to my usual fix-all solution: Knoppix. I used qtparted to properly set my NTFS partition as active (XP apparently didn't get the job done), and I thought I might as well make the 100MB partition FAT16 while I was there. That worked fine as well.

I'll note that at this point, the NTFS partition was still readable.

Reboot: same thing as before. Here, I used one of my XP CD's in recovery mode to run fixmbr. It gave me a menacing warning... Read more

I am running xp home on a compaq presario S6300NX.

I clicked on a link in a web search and now I have this. It also has set an icon on my desk top for a porn site that I cannot delete. I use avast, spy bot and ad-aware. Spy bot removed it more than once but it is still there and the desk top icon won't delete. I am getting numerous error messages as well as the windows system going into blue screen/restart mode over and over. If I ignor the warnings and errors after a resart then it seems a little better but the errors are over top all other open windows and never go away.

My pc was infected with Vundo, i tried to use VundoFix and it did not do the job for me. Due to that I used unlocked and forced vundo file to be deleted. Right at the instant, the pc froze. I thought it was normal because I forced it to unlock Winlogon. I restarted the pc, the window won't login, it played the startup music, but it just wont load the desktop. Then I pop in the window xp cd and tried to use repair. Nothing changed. So then, I reinstalled the window instead, a fresh install without formatting. For the first few minutes, the window worked just fine, but after a little while, window stopped functioning correctly. I tried to property my computer, it did not pop out nor any error notification. Then I reinstalled the window again. I thought it could be caused by the drivers or programs I installed so I tested opening one of those system application after every installation. Then I noticed that it could be caused by Nvidia driver, and I'm using Chaintech Geforce 7100gs. I thought it might help if I just uninstall the driver I just installed. But I cannot open add or remove neither does device manager can be opened. (None of the application in control panel can be opened either.) I even removed the card and the problem still wasnt solved. So I'm stuck, I have no idea what is causing the problem, and I've reinstalled window over and over again, its tiring me out.

Hello everyone!

Though this issue has been discussed already here, I've been unable to solve this puzzle for the last two days.

So, I have a new ACER Aspire 5600U all-in-one with Windows 8 pre-installed, Intel core i5 3230M, RAM 4 GB DDR3. For some reason I decided to return this PC to the supplier and get another one (this has nothing to do with the OS). Now have to fully restore the factory settings.

My problem is: I tried Fedora 20 Linux on this PC. Grub therefore installed itself as the default bootloader. I restored the factory settings on the Windows drive, manually removed Fedora partitions and extended the Windows partition. Everything fine, except Grub which is still the bootloader and offering to boot Fedora every time. I investigated numerous forums and sites, and tried many ways to remove Grub:
using the command prompt in the Windows 8 recovery environment, typing 'bootrec /fixmbr', 'bootrec /fixboot', 'bootrec /scanos', 'bootrec /rebuildbcd' (completed successfully, but no effect on Grub)using the command prompt in the Windows 8 recovery environment, typing 'bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr' (actually, I didn't understand what it did)manually removing fedora boot entries with the bcdedit facility in the command prompt, typing 'bcdedit /delete {UUID of fedora entry} (completed successfully, but no effect on Grub)doing essentially the same with the EasyBCD utility (no effect on Grub)boot-repair CD, Ultimate boot CD and Super Grub CD all did not work, because failed to ... I just added a 2nd hdd (1) and installed Linux Mint to it. The 1st hdd (0) has the original Win7 x64 that came with my Dell box.

How do I get rid of grub bootloader so I can boot as before with original MBR? I want to be able to hit F12 and choose boot order as before.

You are dual booting with a Linux OS, using the Grub bootloader menu, and now you want to remove Linux and Grub and restore your Windows 7 boot manager.

Here's how:

This screen shot shows Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and my Ubuntu 9.10 installed on logical partitions (volumes) in an extended partition. The two partitions on the end are for Ubuntu and its swap partition. Windows does not recognize the file system used by Ubuntu, so you see no data.

This is the same hard drive viewed from Ubuntu using GParted. Ubuntu does recognize the Windows NTFS file system and correctly labels the partitions. Again for verification, the last two partitions (volumes) are for Ubuntu and its swap partition.

From Windows 7 Disk Management, remove (delete) the last two partitions or, if your installation is different, the Ubuntu partitions.

Boot to your Windows 7 install DVD (or the System Repair CD) and navigate to the Command Prompt option.

Type: diskpart
and press enter.

Type: select disk 0 (zero)
and press enter

Type: list volume
and press enter

and identify the drive letter of your CD/DVD drive.

Hi I am looking at Grub4dos since my recent foray into all things bootloaders. I am gaining a little footing with what I can and can't do (practically!) Although it was definitely trickier than I thought (or I just don't have the same time like I used to... ) Anyhow, I am looking at Grub because it sounds easier to learn the Grub2, and all my systems are pre EFI bios setups. I am looking for a 'Hoyle' maintainable setup. Therefore I decided to "initially" install W7 on C: and XP on D: (both on primary partitions)

But... also I have an existing XP image that was originally installed on C: Now I read somewhere, someone had a setup that would boot into a Master boot loader, presumably Grub, and then select one of two OSs and assign it C: and run it. and the other would become D: while leaving E,F,G, etc intact. That would really be a sweet setup for me because I could then use my existing XP image still since it would still think it is on C while running...

So my question is before I dive headlong into Grub. I know it would be the ideal bootloader for multi (pre EFI bios) But can it assign letters to partitions? so as to switch C and D like that while leaving other partitions assigns as they are? Just looking for a little confirmation and any tips. Here goes nothin'...

I did point out that I may not have a serial number or indeed a model number but I did have one thing.......a PACKARD BELL! To cut a long story short, after a very expensive telephone call, I was told that they could/would not help and that they simply did not have an email address that they would give out for technical assistance.

Now then, the machine. It has a 15" screen, Intel Centrino 1300MHz, 512MB RAM, a 120GB IDE HDD and I have attached pictures of the wee beastie so that someone out there might recognise it. I really want to nail the model number, or at least get the LAN driver so I can get it on the net and get Packard Bell to do a self driver test if they do such a thing, I haven't been very impressed with them thus far......

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and would elevate the member to a level hitherto unheard of in the ranks of 'Packard Bell Customer Care'!!

**UPDATE: I have just been told that it could well be a T5 series, but even armed with that, I cannot see any support in terms of drivers offered on the Packa... Read more

Hi All;I have a T620 Plus Thin Client. It has the following on the pull out label:T620 PLUS /Tpro/4C/8GF/4GRO/TCSerial No.:8CN52300Y6Product No.:G6U74AA#ABGI'm trying to re-purpose this thin client and, to do so, I need to get at the BIOS. According to an HP ?Read-This-First!?, publication 746074-B21, the BIOS POST information is only available it the unit is connected to a monitor via the VGA display port on the rear panel. According to the ?Quick Specs?, the 2 nd rear port is:Factory configured with one of the following:1 x serial port (2 nd rear port)1 x VGA analog video output1 x Fiber Optic NIC with SC connectorWell, my 2 nd rear port is a serial port. Obviously, it's been ?Factory Configured? with two serial ports. So, have I got the wrong model? I wasn't given any choice. What model should I have asked for? I so frustrated! I've been trying to get at the BIOS since I purchased this thin client in October. Thanks,Norm

I Have updated to Windows 10 and added SSD. Windows is listing in device manager lists a Wireless adapter - Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 However my physical adapter card installed indicates it is a Atheros Model AR5B125. This same model number AR5B125 is listed inside the battery bay. I believe the OS install misidentified my adapter and wiped out Bluetooth. Can anyone clearify?

A:Wrong Adapter model

Hi: Below is the link to the product specs page for your notebook. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-g7-2200-Notebook-PC-series/5296086/model/5333368/doc... It never had built in bluetooth networking or that feature would have been listed along with the 1x1 802.11b/g/n WLAN Wireless Connectivity specification. Also the Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi adapter your notebook has, is not a combination wifi/bluetooth adapter.

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit) I recently have started to see dozens of of "touches" on my screen at the same time. I see the radar effect of the touch point going vertically up the screen, it looks like fireworks going on up the screen, and cannot do anything for HOURS. It started as one line, now it is 2 or 3.  I have done software updates etc., virus checks....but no change or improvement

Hey everyone I'm facing a peculiar problem with my computer; it's in Devices & Printers. I remember I used to have a fancy image of my computer displayed, but now it doesn't anymore and it doesn't have my correct model listed either
Attachment 310183
As you can see, my printer and Logitech receiver have the right icons and info. I think it may have something to do with the fact that I'm using a different hard drive to the one that came with the laptop. I'm also not using the OEM version of W7 anymore, from Toshiba. I used to be able to click on my computer's fancy icon where it'd bring up a sub-menu, with different options. That's how it is when I click on my printer anyway, lol.
Attachment 310185
This is what comes up when I click on the icon.

Anyone know how I can fix it? I like fancy icons xD
Any help is appreciated

I want to use my HP 712C printer using a USB Parallel adapter. When I plug it in, the New Device Hardware Wizard appears. It tells me that only a HP 710 printer is detected.
If I choose to search for the hardware (HP 712c) and I try to install the driver, I get a message saying that if I choose to install that, my computer may become unstable or not work at all.

I want to use the older 712c (parallel port) that's why I got the USB Parallel Adapter.
Any suggestions?....THANK YOU... Steve M.

A:detecting wrong HP model printer

could be teh new device hardware wizard is correct ....it is possible the HP 712c is in the same family- 710 of HP printers. go ahead and proceed with the wizard and see if it sends print jobs properly to the 712 and post back with results

This morning I wake up and power on the computer to get a suprise greeting that my Western Digital 120G had S.M.A.R.T error. I went into the CMOS, and instead of detecting it as WD1200, it shows WD1000. (Did not make any changes on my computer before I turn it off)

Going to Windows XP, from disk manager, it shows the drive is not format and the capacity is 6G.

Any suggestion on what to do??

A:S.M.A.R.T Fail, Bios detect wrong HD model

Check the IDE cable. My machine shutdown yesterday and couldn't find the HDD when trying to restart. I reseated my cable and booted into windows and did all the disk checks I could find. It seems my cable was at fault.(Keeping fingers crossed)

Yesterday I bought a new mother board for my PC my Processor model is AMD Athlon II X3 440 Triple Core Processor, but after changing Mother Board in system information it's showing my Processor as AMD Phenom II 4 B40 four core processor. I don't know why it is showing like this. Is this dangerous for my hardware? I used AM2N68-AM PLUS before and now I changed M5A78L-M LX. Except this every thing else is perfect.

A:Processor info is showing wrongly in system info after changing MB

It's not dangerous, but I believe you can get it to display correctly. All you have to do is open Device Manager, right-click each entry for the CPU and choose Uninstall. When you're finished, reboot and then open Device Manager up when it's done rebooting and check the CPU again. It should be showing up correctly after that, but if not then we'll go from there.

My sons comp quit on him last week and i have no idea what is wrong. it will show his vid card info and his mobo info and that is it. I tried re-installing the win 7 os, but nothing happens. i think maybe the cd rom is bad, but shouldnt it boot up anyway? i dont know if or how to boot from a usb drive. Could that be a way around the problem, or does it sound like maybe the hdd is bad? Any help will be appreciated. thanx

A:Comp shows vid card and mobo info then nothing

Hi watcher 6342,

You say you tried to reinstall Windows, did the machine boot that far? or did it just go as far as the first Motherboard and Graphic card screen?

If the latter, then the machine is failing the POST (Power On Self Test) this means that you have some faulty hardware somewhere.

First and foremost, you have already identified the CD drive as possibly bad. If it is causing a problem then the machine may well refuse to POST because the SATA controller cannot initialise properly. It seems to me, (and I admit I don't have a massive amount of knowledge in this area, beyond what I have just said) that the first course of action would be to try unplugging the CD drive from the SATA port.
