Windows 7 wont connect to wifi (not a hardware / router issue)

Q: Windows 7 wont connect to wifi (not a hardware / router issue)

One of the laptops at work is having issues, and I think someone with monkey hands screwed something up. As "the computer guy", it's on me to get it fixed.

His Windows 7 computer will not connect to a wifi network. It can detect them (so I know the radio is on), but after half a beat, I get that "windows was unable to connect" message".

Thinking it was the internal card, I connected my external antenna, and got the same error. So I think I can rule out hardware. I tried using an identical laptop from work, and that one connected with no problem. So I think I can rule out any issues with my router.

I've updated all the possible drivers on the computer, Windows is up to date, and i've disabled IPV6.

Here's where it gets weird. He can get an intermittent connection when he uses his phone's hotspot.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 wont connect to wifi (not a hardware / router issue)

can we see an ipconfig /all and an xirrus
also
What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

have you tried a restore to a working date ?

usually company PCs are configured in such a way - that we are unable to provide assistance - as we may suggest doing something which is outside the companies process/rules

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

Wi-Fi Inspector | Xirrus
Direct link to the program is here Wi-Fi Inspector Confirmation

{If the above link does not work heres another link Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector | PCWorld}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus...-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

If you are using the Mac OS then use iStumbler 99 or
if you want to optimise base station position and signal strength / dead spots use
AP Grapher - Mac OS X AirPort Stumbler and Wireless Graphing Software which has a graph function to monitor signal

I hooked up my new Linksys E2000 router, and all devices connect no problems. 3 Windows 7 machines, a 3DS, the wii, and the ps3 can all access the internet just fine. My only Vista machine will not connect to the internet, just local only. I have tried assigning a static IP and I have restarted my network adapter, machine, router and modem to no avail.

Not sure what would be causing this. Any ideas?

Hello,

I really need help since I'm not computer savy. Yesterday, I stupidly decided to disconnect my modem and router because all the wires were a mess!! Well, now I'm not sure if I reconnected correctly, but I guess I did since I can get online but have no wifi. My router password is working, however, when I entered all the wireless/security stuff on the Linksys site it just keeps bringing back to the basic set up page . I hsve no idea what is wrong. Any ideas? My router is a Linksys N300.

Thanks so much! I spent about 8 hours yesterday trying to fix this. Losing my mind!

A:Router won't connect, no wifi (moved from Windows 8 forum)

Might help to give us the actual model number of your Linksys router. The N300 refers to a type, not a model number. Wouldn't hurt to tell us the brand and model number of the modem.

Please tell us exactly how you have the computer, router and modem wired to each other, by referring to how the ports are named and labeled.

When you say, "I can get online but have no wifi", do you mean you your computer can get to the Internet only with a wired connection?

When you say the, "Linksys site", do you mean the web based administration pages on your Linksys router?

When you were changing the wireless and security settings, did you need to click a button the settings pages to actually save the settings.

Does your router show up in the list available WiFi connections on the Windows network connection list?

Hello, i know a lot about the dell xps m1330, especially when it runs xp.

I know the wifi in the laptop works, i know the laptop has no issues.
I know this because i switched my hard drive from my 1330 to this laptop which is also a 1330...connects and works fine.
Wifi IS turned on
In device manager the driver is ok no exclamation marks anywhere

When i try and connect with the ethernet i get identifying no network access, then it says currently connected to unidentified network, no network access! You cannot browse.

So that being said it must be in the setting with windows 7.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the wifi driver it did not make any difference.
I also tried using a ethernet connection and it would not connect either.
When i use the win 7 trubleshooter it states a network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken.

Remeber this laptop functions fine with my hard drive in it with windows xp.

Should i out the windows 7 disc back in...is there a repair function??

Hi Kentuckynet,

My name is Mohammed from DELL social media outreach team

In response to your recent query I would suggest you to go the DELL website update the chipset drivers and wireless drivers .You can do it by clicking on the link given below

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19

Once it’s done click on start->Run-> type CMD type the command ipconfig then press enter and check whether you see any numbers in default gateway if you can see that then type the following command ping then the numbers. If you are not able to get reply after you ping might have issues with windows 7 .Please reply back with the findings.

A:windows 7 laptop wont connect to wireless router

then you have a hardware problem or the Win firewall or some other Internet Security program is causing it. Uninstall all Internet security and virus/firewall programs and turn off the win firewall and see if it clears up.

Just turning these program off doesn't really turn them off. you have to Uninstall for them to give up restricting you.

Hello my router is located downstairs in the corridor and has been working fine until today. The strange thing is my dads windows 8 laptop wont connect to the wireless connection in the living room which is next to the corridor (where the router is located), which is strange because its close by so should connect with ease. But As soon as I go up stairs with his laptop the connection is great with no errors at all. So at the moment can only go online upstairs even though its further away from the router

Another strange thing is, I usually play on the xbox one in my bedroom connecting normal which is also upstairs. Well earlier I decided to take my xbox down stairs in the living room(next to the corridor again where the router is), but my xbox one couldn't find my router/connect at all. So I brought i back and low and behold its back working normal again in bedroom(up stairs)

Have I got some sort of range block on my router or something. My iphone, ipad and macbook pro all work fine downstairs but no windows products do

Cheers. Hoping to get this sorted.

It WOULD recognize the driver installed on device manager but just would not pick up any WIFI connections, there was a red cross on the network icon at the bottom right tool tray and when pressing FN+F5 it would not list wireless network card ATALL, only the Bluetooth connectivity icon was present. My procedureSo this was my procedure, I re-installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and installed all the drivers accept the wireless LAN driver and the bios update, so that?s including drivers, utilities and software on the off chance that some of the software or utilities also included drivers I needed in the system to work, I tried installing the intel wireless link driver and the wireless LAN drive together, the intel wireless link driver on its own still nothing I even got to the point ... This is the idea, I have DVR for CCTV and I need to configure it for port forwarding, and since it has only LAN connection it is not possible to connect in pocket wifi, so i used to have a wireless router since it has a LAN connection. A:How to connect pocket wifi to wireless router, to connect the dvr for cctv?

I'm not at all sure I understand. Are you trying to use the wireless router as a Wireless Bridge (to connect to the pocket wifi via wireless and the DVR via ethernet)? If so, does the router have wireless bridge (or AP Client) mode?

Was not sure what category this goes into. Here is my situation/question. I run a small motel and having trouble with Wifi signal reaching the 2nd floor rooms sufficiently. I have heard of the terminology and it's quite daunting... you have wifi booster, access point, range expanders, repeaters, bridges...etc. Do I need one of booster/expanders/repeaters for each floor? The property is a L shape, the router is in the office on the short side. Below is the the orientation of the property which might help. Thanks in advance...

A:Outside Hardware needed to boost Wifi router signal?

Can't give any guarantees, as sometimes you just have to try to see if there are any obstacles (e.g., concrete wall) to proposed solutions.

For the diagram shown the best solution is to add an Access Point (AP) somewhere along the long side and run an ethernet cable from the router to the AP. If running a cable is not an option there are (at least) three alternatives ...

a. Replace the router antenna(s) with a hi-gain antenna if the router has removable antenna(s).

b. Use powerline adapters (example) to add an AP along the long side. These adapters may work great, may not work at all, or may work fine until something else is plugged into the electrical circuit.

c. Put a Range Extender (Repeater) at the corner of the L. Since these rebroadcast the signals the network is necessarily slowed, and they are often difficult to get working, especially if they are a different brand than the router.

Depending on the construction of your walls and ceiling/floors you may need more than one of the above additions.

Note 1: Any wireless router can be configured as an Access Point, and often are less expensive. I can post the procedure if you go that route.

Note 2: If you are looking for a Range Extender (Repeater) also search for Access Point and "Ethernet Convertor" and see if the unit also has the Extender/Repeater function. A few routers also have this feature.

I have an HP Mini 2140 laptop with Windows XP pro and It will no longer connect to my wireless router. It started with McAfee Security Center warning me that my computer was not protected. When I clicked fix nothing happened except that after my Wifi connection will not stay connected. I scanned the system and found nothing. I downloaded Malware Bytes and two other spyware products and Malware Bytes found anything and removed something called Perfessional Malware. Next I uninstalled McAfee which did not solve the problem. Next I repaired the IPStack then ran Winsocketfix routine. Then I reloaded all device drivers from the manufacture CD and still no internet. Then I downloaded and ran Combefix. I also encountered this forum and followed instructions to created an attach.txt, DDS.txt file and GMER.log. I am ready to upload those files when appropriate. The last thing I tried was to hard code the IP address etc in the wireless connection. That has allowed me to connect to a nearby unsecured connection, but to weak to see the internet. I still cannot connect to my wireless router. I forgot to mention I have a 2 Wire modem/router. Thanks in advance for your help.

My sis is having problems...

we swapped routers, i replaced her Speedtouch 585v6 which she used wireless fine with my Netgear DG824Gv3 (which she has used before on wifi in past) - this morning her wifi laptop on XP worked on the 585v6 so i set it up to work and it works on LAN and detects the network but upon connecting it fails

it seems to be doing different things -
sometimes it finds the network sometimes it doesnt (rare)
sometimes when trying to connect it says its trying then just goes back to detected network (click connect to connect...)
sometimes its fails saying the signal was lost and there may be interference
she said before we tried everything it may have said it could not renew IP

shes now just said before she rang me the red X was gone from the wifi tray icon and had the yellow triangle..

can anyone please help?

Hi all - I could do with some help here.

Since cleaning up my daughters laptop, it won't connect to her wifi router (it did at one time apparently!)

I bring it home to my house and bingo! it connects fine.

My router is set to WPA2. Hers is set to WPA-PSK, so I set my router to WPA and again it wont connect as at her place. When viewing the available networks it constantly cycles "Acquiring Network Address" on and off.

I suppose simplest answer is to configure her router to WPA2, but I didnt want to do that in case connections to other things get messed up. Why wont her laptop make a connection to WPA???

Could you be very specific about your network, beginning with your type of ISP?

Ok guys, I have a home office, work for a large corporation but home based. I have my own broadband and seperate router for gaming, surfing etc.
I also have a dedicated works laptop, which also has a dedicated WIFI router for purely work stuff.

Previously, I made it impossible for my "work" router to connect to my "home" laptop, for obvious reasons.
However, a couple of weeks ago, I needed to do some trouble shooting, and allowed the home lap top to access my work network.
I switched it back, but forgot to inhibit the 2 from linking.

So today, I'm looking at some ahem.. porn, didn't think much about it. A few hours later, I realise I'm connected to the "work" network.

So,

1)Is there a way to check in Windows 7 what router i was connected to at various times through WIFI?
2)Is it likely the ISP would advise my employer that I have looked at porn? - i didn't go through the work VPN, it's just a standard line from Zen into my house, by my company pay the bill direct.

appreciate any help!
Dave

I'm posting from my phone because right now its my only access.

I have a Netgear Router model number WNR2000
I have a Gateway GM5260 model computer using windows xp.

I am currently trying to connect to my awesome neighbor's wifi connection that they so lovingly bestowed on me and my family the other day.

Herein lies my problem:
I cannot get their router and my own to connect. I'm a networking noob and could really use some assistance.
I've got a their wireless password, my router, and my ethernet cable connecting my router to my pc.
Do I need to pick up a wireless antenna to connect to my router as well?
Should I have my neighbor push the connectivity button on his router?
Dunno where to go from here.
Please help!
Thanks be in advance to anyone who understands wtf I'm going through and knows how to fix it

Actually they are breaking the ISP agreement in most countries.
The agreement will state that the broadband can only be used in one premises , this is so that people cannot provide neighbours with wifi ....

so as this is also against our rules - closing post

WiFi "Piggybacking" / "Wardriving" - We do not support the act of using someone else's Internet without permission. Also, please note that almost every ISP prohibits sharing your Internet connection with another home, and we will not assist you in breaking their rules.Click to expand...

Not so long ago, I started a post about connecting to router's gateway, and TerryNet helped me solve the problem wonderfully.

But now I have another problem, please help me.

I have a wifi router and a adsl ethernet/usb router, the adsl router connect to my laptop through usb port, and the wifi router connect to the adsl router throught ethernet/wan port.

I can go online with the adsl router alone but cant with the wifi.

I can connect to the wifi router's gate to config stuff, like password, wifi's name... but I just can not connect to IPS to online. Other devices can see the wifi network but when connect to it, I just can go to it's gateway.

What should I do now ?

I have looked up several things on my pavilion g6that could be wrong with this notebook. It's product # is c2n47ua#ABA while the model # g6-2249wm. I've checked the Wi-Fi adapter, it's working properly. While I also uninstalled and reinstalled back in. I've refreshed the computer it allowed me to connect to the internet and then dropped the connection. Now I am factory resetting the computer but I'm not sure if it's going to do anything. If anybody has anything to help me solve this it would be greatly appreciated

So, i got a new laptop and im having issues with the wireless WiFi connection. So my laptop finds everyother wifi signal except mine. Ive tried researching and nothing has helped so this is my last resort. Ive even tried deleting my WiFi card and reinstalling and it hasnt helped. Ive tried the HP network check and it says i have no problems with my wireless connection. Is there a way to fix this or am i just going to have to get a new WiFi card?

A:Laptop Wont Connect To WiFi

Hi: Most HP consumer model notebooks only work on the 2.4 GHz wireless network band. Are you trying to connect to a 5.0 GHz wireless network? If so, that is most likely the problem. You will need to turn on your 2.4 Ghz wireless band on your router in order to connect wirelessly.

A:My Laptop Wont Connect to My Wifi?

What operating system are you running? I am assuming and not sure but I believe your PC is not getting an IP. To verify, can you follow the steps mention below;

Go to start>run>type in cmd and hit enter>command prompt will show up.>type in ipconfig /all

Whatever is on the screen post it so we can troubleshoot further.

I'm having problems connecting to a new modem I got from AT&T (AT&T7550). It was a replacement because I had the another one from them to long. However, I'm have problems getting on my network and I had no problems get to two desktop, a tablet, IPad and 2 PSP. But for some reason my laptop XPS M140 is having problems connecting. The first thing I did was to up-date the drives from the dell website, then I uninstalled them 2x, even tho the hardware was saying it was fine. ...Then I have switch from the Intel wifi manager and back to windows wifi manager and then I removed all the info in the change preferred networks. The I took the card out and reinstalled it back in my laptop. But it keeps stating "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of availble networks and try to connect again." Now I did what they asked and the funny thing is that when it wont connect the wifi light will go out on its own without me turning it off myself manually. Now I think I may need to replace my wifi card, however, in the device Manager for the network has no problems. Oh by the way I can connect to the internet using my ethernet cable with no problems.
I hope I'm making sense with all this?

A:Why wont my laptop connect to my WIFI

Specs on your laptop would be a big help.
Other than that, is there a switch you need to turn/switch on?
How old is this laptop?
Give more info so we don't have to play 20 questions.

Hi

I have just installed 8.1 on my laptop and now my wifi card wont connect to the network. My PC works on wifi just fine.

My laptop is a Lenovo G405 using a 802.11n Broadcom card.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

A:WIFI wont connect after 8.1 update

You may need to update the Broadcom driver from the Lenovo site directly via the link below. Just set the Op system to Windows 8.1 and the Category to Networking: Wireless LAN.

Hopefully this is a different driver version than the one you are currently using.

Hello my friend has a laptop that will not connect or show any wireless networks. The wireless Icon in the toolbar just has an red x over it. He says he has tried to re install drivers from the manufacturer website but it did not help. I am not sure if he needs to uninstall the ones he has on his laptop at the moment before installing the newer ones or not cause I am sure he did not uninstall them the first time he tried to install new drivers. We attempted to trouble shoot with the windows internal troubleshooting tool for networks but was greeted with the message in the link below. What else should he try.

Is the adapter turned on from the keyboard? does it connect using Ethernet?
Post snip of Device Manager with Network Adapters expanded.
Also a snip of Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections.

This is the preferred, best way to upload an image or a file to a post.

Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Press the ALT and PrntScrn keys at the same time, this will capture only the active window to use in Paint or your preferred graphics editor.

You may also upload a photo or image you already have on your PC, as you would a file, without using the Snipping tool.

hey everyone,
I have a:
CenturyLink C1000A wireless router/modem
xbox360
ps3
2x android phone
2x winxp laptops (sp2, sp3)
i can connect all of these devices using the default settings and key except for the 2 winxp laptops. They both detect the network, let me type in the key, but then get stuck at "waiting for network" screen. eventually that screen closes without connecting. im currently online with the sp2 wired directly to the router. any ideas or recommendations?
i can provide more information if anyone thinks it will help, and thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:laptops wont connect to wifi

Install SP3 on the way-out-of-date machine.

For the one that already has SP3 ...

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network and also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.
