laptop battery never fully charges

Q: laptop battery never fully charges

hi

ive got a brand new battery in an old dell inspiron n4030 lappy, win 7 64bit. It never charges more than 86 pc and runs out of juice at about 26pc [on the task bar] . To try and calibrate it ive run full charge/discharge cycles 4 times. Only a couple of pc better

using power plan called "balanced" and default settings, anyway, the recommended one

currently the pc is set to shut down/sleep at 2 pc but because the battery expires much earlier [around 26pc] it just crashes, which cant be good for the HD. Will change this setting.
any ideas anyone

thanks

Preferred Solution: laptop battery never fully charges

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think you need to select power saver and make a plan for battery. Maybe it works in your case.

Ever since yesterday I've had this problem, I tried several solutions and none of them worked. Basically the problem is: The laptop only works on battery now. When the battery is at 0% the laptop turns off even if the AC is plugged in. To make matters worse, when the laptop is on I get this message "plugged, not charging". So basically the AC no longer works by itself and only charges the battery when the laptop is off. Here is what I tried so far:- Changing the settings on the Lenovo Energy Mangement tool- Uninstalling the Lenovo Energy Mangement tool - Taking off the battery and AC, pushing the power button for 30 seconds, putting them back in and turning on the laptop.- Starting the laptop on safe mode- Praying to God None of these things worked. Somebody help.

I've an Inspiron 15 7560, it's just just 3 months old. The design capacity of the battery in this thing is 41,998 mWh but windows batteryreport and hwmonitor are showing a full charge capacity of 39,079 mWh. That's 7% less. But the strange thing is that batteryreport as well as hwmonitor show a charge level of 107% when the laptop is full charged. And that's not on one occasion, every full charge is shown as 107%.. The thing that's even more strange is that according to battery capacity history of powercfg batteryreport that drop in capacity happened just around the time I changed the battery charge setting from "Adaptive" to "Primarily AC Use" in Dell Power Manager Lite. What's happening here?

A:7% battery wear on new laptop but battery charges up to 107% according to batteryreport

The lowering of the threshold is what is intended.
This link will give you more information on the charge options.

For your specific case
"Primarily AC — Extends battery life by lowering the charge threshold, so that the battery never charges to 100 percent capacity. Recommended for users who primarily operate the system while plugged into an external power source."

Hi all, My laptop is new, i've had it for just about a month now. There's usually an orange charging light on the side of the laptop that illuminates when the charger is plugged in. However recently, whenever my laptop is on and i try to charge it, the orange light illuminates for a matter of seconds and comes up with the message "plugged in but not charging" and then the light just turns white and the laptop continually runs as if nothing is plugged in. However, when the laptop is turned off, the orange light will iluminate and will  charge to 100%. The charger is completely fine as it appears to charge the laptop when it is off. I have even purchased a new charger and that has made no difference. It appears as though it's some type of settings problem, but i have checked settings and nothing seems to be different. Any help would be appreciated, as i'd hate to have to keep switching of my laptop just so that it will charge.

Long story short - I spilt water over my laptop keyboard and uplugged both AC cable and battery. 3 to 4 days later i plugged it in again, placed the battery and it was charging and running on it without any problem for 2 hours. Then i decided that it's just fine so I plugged the AC cable and I haven't used it on battery for 20-30 days. Well, today I unplugged the AC cable and my laptop turned off.
I downloaded a diagnostic tool called BatteryMon and it says:
(Since I'm unable to post images which is sad - please copy and paste it into your browser adress tab)
img714.imageshack.us/img714/8543/18495763.jpg
So, can anyone please tell me what does it really mean ? I can see that it says it's 120% charged which is overcharging, isn't it ? I'm not really into electrics, so please help me - how am I supposed to get my laptop battery working if it isn't dead ?

A:Lenovo G560 battery charges but laptop won't run on it

The battery contacts could be corroded by the spilled water. It takes time for this corrosion to develop so that's why the time that the laptop worked. The water could have affected other internal circuits too over time. The laptop needs to be opened up and inspected

I have a HP stream x360, and it is having battery problems. First of all, it drains even when I shut it down completely. I shut it down with approximately 90% battery and about a day later it wont turn on. So I go to charge it, which leads to my second problem. It charges insanely slow. It has been plugged in for 12 hours, and when I press power, the button lights up for 5 seconds and then turns off. It isn't a kink in the wire because I store it properly, and it is unravelled when charging. It isn't the outlet because ai have moved 3 times, which means totally different outlets, but all with the same charge speed; SLOW. Finally, it is actually fully plugged into the computer because the little red light IS on, indicating it is charging. So what do I do? What is wrong? I can't take out a battery because it is internal. And currently, I cannot do anything with the computer because it is still dead, and it has a habit of taking 2 days to charge. About. Please help. I got it about 9 months ago. It isn't even a year old.

Hi guys, I have a problem with my laptop battery. It refuses to charge unless it's completely drained to 0%. It has no problem charging back up to 100% afterwards, but it just won't charge if it's anything above 0% even if the laptop is turned off, which has me baffled. I've searched for this problem but all I've found are instances where the battery WON'T charge after a complete drain, which is like the opposite of my problem...

Recently I noticed that the amber LED on my HP Probook 650 G1 flashing constantly, even when the laptop is powered off.   The System Tray battery indication is 100%, fully charged, when on AC power and 100% on battery power shortly after undocking.    I find the Probook won't power up if AC power is not available (no response when pressing power button) but remains powered when I remove it from the docking station.    Have the electronics that control this LED flashing and power up when not on AC gone bad?    Is this an indication of other failure? thanks

Obviously this isn't true as im using it right now to post, my laptop also shows that its fully charged (The LED light is lighted indicating that it is 100% charged)

What can I do here? I'm quite sure its not a problem of a virus because i've scanned my computer and all. I am using a Toshiba laptop, using the Toshiba powerplan. And if needing more info, I shall provide but I don't think thats necesary for this problem.

Not sure if this will make a huge impact, however.

Please help,
I have a fairly new (just over a year) Toshiba Satellite A65-S126. It runs great and forever on AC power. The second the AC is disconn ected, it powers off. The battery shows full power. This computer has only been in normal use for about 3 months. The first year it was used on oaccasion, but always worked on battery just fine. Don't like having to plug in wherever I go, and don't want to be without while dealer is "looking at it." Any advice would be great!
Thanks

have you made any recent changes to your system? (i.e. new battery or BIOS update?) Did you drop the laptop?

Also, laptop batteries are generally only good for 1 year of normal use anyways before needing replacement, although they will usually still hold a 5~10 minute charge)

My parents were redoing my "office"/mancave, and they unplugged my laptop from the surge protector I was using, and plugged it into a different one, which apparently cut off the power going to my laptop. So my battery ran down to nothing, and my computer shut itself off. Now, I'm on a different protector, but my computer won't boot all the way up. It's bringing up the safe mode prompt, and when I try to boot normally, it gets past the "Starting Windows" screen, and my cursor appears on a black screen. I can't move the cursor, either with my touchpad or with my wireless USB mouse. The fan is running, so I let it sit, hoping it would come up to the log on screen. I had breakfast and came back to no change. I held the power button until it shut off, and rebooted, this time going into safe mode, with networking.
Please don't tell me I'll have to send my laptop back into Dell for servicing, I'm sure they're sick of seeing my laptop.

A:Laptop won't boot fully after battery drain

Hi Bubbayoshi,

Please try the following steps to see if they help:

- Unplug the power cable and the battery > Hold down the power button for 8-10 seconds continuously > Plug the 'power cable back-in' > Power on the system and repeatedly tap 'space bar' (without the battery plugged in) > Highlight 'Delete Restoration Data' if prompted and tap 'Enter' > If it boots to 'Windows', you may plug the battery back-in and the system should work fine

- If the issue persists, try running 'Hardware Diagnostics' to check 'Hardware Functionality': Alienware

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

Hello. I have an HP pavillion notebook 15-ab120ca, which I've had for just over a year. in the last couple days I'd noticed that my laptop seemed to be shutting down without any warning, and when the battery wasn't completely drained, at around 30%.Yesterday I noticed that my battery was charging to around 93-94% and then would say "plugged in, not charging", if I unplugged the ac cable and reattached sometimes the number would jump around to 89, 100, 95 %, but would be not charging. When running on battery power, it lasts less than a couple hours. After trying a few different troubleshooting methods, earlier today the battery got to 17% before shutting down with no warning. However, it dropped within minutes from 33% to 25% to 17% before that. I have run a battery check and it says that the battery is ok. If there something I can do to fix this problem? Thank you.

hi guys,
I recently purchased a 7200mah 10.8v battery from Ebay, for my toshiba m205-s4806 laptop. (to replace the 10.8v original battery)
Instead, I got a 7800mah 11.1V battery. unsurprisingly, the front LED charging light never goes green, and the charging meter (win xp) goes up to 100% but stays on "charging" without changing to "on ac power" like with my older battery. Either the battery is f**ked, or more likely - the laptop is not designed to give sufficient voltage for this battery.

Here's my question though. I can deal with the battery icon not changing, as long as I know for sure that it doesn't draw more current than a battery that reports "I'm full". I'm about to start traveling with the laptop and I need a long lasting battery that will spare my vehicle's battery as much as possible. I think that when this battery goes to the closest it's going to get to be fully charged, the computer power circuit is not able to charge the battery anymore and thus there is no loss, and the laptop will actually draw just the power that it needs to keep running.

also, I get about 2.5 - 3 hours of run time, from a supposedly 7800mah battery, sound a bit too short no? I just can't recall what I used to get from the original 4000mah (or so) battery.

I'm no good when it comes to electricity, so your help is appreciated, thanks!
Shawn

Hi Raouaa, Please use Lenovo Settings to confirm the status of the battery, from your description of the issue it seems that this is a defective battery. Lenovo Settings should show you that the battery status is destroyed, if this is the case I would recommend getting in touch with Lenovo Warranty Support and getting the battery replaced if the unit is still under warranty. You can get in touch by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page under Support.Cheers,

My Dell XPS battery charges only to 99%. Technical support said this is a "normal" occurrence if you have "adaptive" charging on in the BIOS. They asked me to update the BIOS and then change it to "custom" charging. The battery now charges to 100%.
Is this normal behaviour or just a messy "fix"? I just want to confirm if this is a papered over fault, because I suspect that it is. Personally I am not too pleased with having to call Dell technical support on the day I opened my new laptop!

I have a HP amd a8 laptop - approximately 15 months old. Over the past 3 months I have noticed that it is not charging when plugged in. I used to be able to fully charge it, unplug it and work for 2 hours plus before having to recharge it. I would then plug it back in to top up the power. 3 months ago I noticed when I was doing this it was no longer topping up the power. In fact, the red light (which normally stays on when charging) would only flash once - and then go white and stay white; draining  the remaining power very quickly. I have tried other charges but to no avail. The laptop battery will charge when the laptop is off (lid closed) and in sleep mode. The battery port does feel a little loose but I don't think this is the problem as when I take the battery out and plug the main power in the laptop will power up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Clary

Hi

For a few days, my Tecra A5 has begun to beep and shut down (as when the battery gets low) while it was connected to the power supply AC adapter.

I finally realized that when the computer is plugged in, the battery discharges and does not use the power supply to recharge.

On the other hand, if I switch off the computer, the battery starts to recharge.
I replaced the battery a few months ago, so I think it is still OK.

Could the charger be faulty? Seems strange since it can still recharge the battery when the computer is off.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

A:Tecra A5 - battery charges only when computer is off

> Could the charger be faulty?

Theoretically; yes? but it could be also possible that the power supply electronic on the motherboard is affected? but at first stage the AC adaptor should be checked and notebook should be tested with new, good working AC adaptor.

I am running One Key Optimizer and have a red dot on the battery level, which I thought meant that my computer needed to be optimized. (It did, to be honest.) However, after I did the Checkup, nothing showed up as wrong, but then when I went into the Battery area, it showed that the battery should be calibrated, which I tried starting. It started, but it only charged my battery up, and not discharged it to recharge it. I have it currently on high performance setting to help drain the battery, and I have it unplugged to try and discharge the battery. I know it has to be plugged in, not allowed to sleep, or not to power down the PC, but if it won't discharge, then what's the sense of a calibration? What is wrong?

Whenever I have my laptop turned on and plugged into the mains now, it'll give a message saying (plugged in, not charging) after the power percentage and stay at that level without charging up. But it'll charge when I have my computer off!

It will run off the battery and charge when the computer is off so it's not the battery itself. And it'll boot up and run if I have the AC adapter plugged in with the battery removed, so it's not that either. How do I fix this?

Sorry to hear about the problems with the power. Many times when there are issues with the battery or power to the notebook, it will be one of three things: the power supply, the system board, or the battery. You might want to take a look at this document that has instructions to troubleshoot each of these.  If you follow these instructions, you might find the problem, or at least you will be eliminating them as being the issue.  But I think maybe you'll find the answer in this document, Battery Does not Power the Notebook or Hold a Charge, Thanks,

As and IT Professional I realize that the more information that I provide the easyier to dignose the issue.  So here is the issue and what I have already done to resolve the problem. LAPTOP IS An HP Paviliion g7 Notebook product number B5Z52UAR#ABA. OS - Windows 10 - 64 bit.  My Laptop stopped showing charging even though I have it plugged in.  I thought at first it was the charger but now realize it is something else.  Here is what I have done. I ran the HP Diagnostics on the battery and the diagnostics shows the battery is good.  What is strange is when the diagnostics is running the battery icon starts showing charging and when I hover the mouse pointer over the icon it says plugged in an charging.  But as soon as the diagnostics finishes the icon stops showing charging and when I over over it the battery shows plugged in and not charging.  If I continue to run the diagnostics the battery charges a little more each time. I have performed a routine suggested on a website where I unplug the power cable, power down the laptop, remove the battery, plug the laptop back in, and start the computer.  Then go to Divice Mangaer and Uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Complient Control Method Battery, power down the laptop, unplug the laptop, re-install the battery, and plug the laptop back in.  Then when I load the OS the Microsoft ACPI-Complient Control Method Battery reinstalls.  When I do this the battery icon sh... Hello,
I have a Dell XPS 17 L702X service tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>.  I just bought a new 9-cell battery direct from Dell.  I installed it today, and it charged to only 90%.  Now it says "Plugged in, not charging."
I have tried unplugging the adapter from the machine and plugging it back in, and restarting the machine, with no success.
The last BIOS update for <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> was released in December 2013, so I know I am running the latest BIOS.
Any ideas?  Thanks.

Kevin B

Have you tried checking inside the BIOS of the computer if the AC Adapter and the Battery is working fine? Also try to run some diagnostics to the computer.

I've got a Thinkpad 600E running WindowsXP, which has performed pretty well, although the original battery (understandably) just refuses to hold a charge very long any more - although it will reliably recharge when the laptop is running on A/C.

I decided to invest in a new (genuine) IBM replacement laptop battery, which upon receipt, just wouldn't seem to go into the recharge cycle. The recharge light (lower left screen hinge) only blinks orange. Assuming "defective battery", I requested and received a return merchandise authorization, and returned the battery and requested a replacement. The replacement arrived, and the same problem.

Although not outside the realm of reasonableness, it seems improbably that two consecutive replacement laptop batteries would be defective. Under power options, the replacement battery appears to be being recognized - although just not charging (graphic shows a "circle and bar" running through the battery image).

So, clearly (at least to me),

There's nothing wrong with my A/C adapter
There's nothing wrong with my existing (old) battery
There's nothing wrong with the battery charging circuitry

Again, this is a genuine IBM laptop battery, with the exact same model as the old one and it seems to defy reason that this battery also has some sort of defect. Any suggestions on a way to "kick-start" the new battery into recharging?

You might see what lenovo support has in the way of manuals for that model, maybe some insight in one of them.

OS: Windows 10Problem: When turned on, battery status says "plugged in, not charging" when AC is connected. When turned off and AC is connected, battery is charged as it should. Soon as laptop is turned on again, only battery power is used. I have been through all battery and power related settings. Nothing helps. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anyone? :-) -Jake

If you have a multimeter, how much power is the AC adapter drawing while it is actually charging? Just to check if it is still powerful enough or dying.

This is a v simple question but my pc is really important so I wanted to make sure I was in a knowledgeable place

My HP laptop is a few years old and the battery has done That Thing where it no longer charges and now it can only be used when plugged in (if unplugged it will shut off immediately). The battery however shows a set charge % on screen that is very slowly decreasing. When this charge runs out, will my computer cease to turn on altogether? Or do you think it will still work when plugged in? (or can it not be predicted)

Hi!

For the past couple of weeks I have been having trouble with the battery of my Satellite L50-A. It stays at 0%, even though it does charge. If I remove the power adapter, the notebook keeps working for a while. Now here comes the odd part. If the notebook has been charging for a while, it shuts down. If I remove the power adapter it will start again and still indicate it's at 0%, but now it works for about 1.5 hours before the battery is actually empty.

So I use my laptop without power until it shut down, then I charge it for a couple of hours and then it shuts down and we start all over.

Does anybody have any idea what I could do to solve this issue?

I have tried:
Charging it overnight without using the laptopUpdating several driversDisconnecting the battery, booting with power adapter, shutting down and connecting the battery again

Hi

Did you find a solution? I have a similar problem and can only run the laptop with the power connected.
I have a warning message that the battery needs to be replaced and if I do this it won't boot even though the replacement battery has been charged.
