Playing Old games on a new comp.

Q: Playing Old games on a new comp.

Just for nostalgia value, I tried to play mechwarriors 2 mercenaries, one of my favorite games growing up. I have a much faster comp than the last time I played this 1900 amd, 512 ram.
I installed it and I tried to play it, but I get a black screen for a moment and then it immedialty closes. Is there a way to play old games on a fast comp?

Preferred Solution: Playing Old games on a new comp.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey ya'll, I've got this problem where when I play games and things of that sort for about 30 minutes to an hour. My computer just seems to kind of freeze. Like , my monitor goes into a type of standby mode....... where its still on but I just see all black. And I cant use control alt delete, or alt tab, anything like that. Nothing seems to let me move....or do anything.

I was wondering if any of you might know the reason, or the solution.
I think it COULD be my video card over heating.... but im not very sure.
The game it usually happens on is, Half-Life Counter-strike.

I run a p4 2.0ghz 256mb ram with a Xpert 128 ATI vid card.
on a Win 98 OS ... I know I need more ram, and a better OS. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

Just a few things to check then, Power Mangement settings and Screesaver settings. Do not allow screensaver. Also do u have an app which tells u the temp of the system and cpu etc.. Try getting one if u havent and check the temps after running the pc for a while. Also visit here www.pcpitstop.com

Having a major problem with my computer after I have to reboot or shutdown for a while. If it crashes or I have to reboot, then whenever I start playing a game it will crash shortly thereafter, around 5 minutes after I start playing. I am not able to cntrl-alt-del or alt tab or alt f4, nothing it just completely locks up and the sound plays in a loop so I am forced to reset which in turn restarts the cycle of crashing while playing games again. This is happening with all new games such as WoW EQ2 and even wc3, but not on some of the older games like diablo and d2. I have updated my video card drivers. I use an NVidia 6600 GT card. So I'm asking for a little help and sorry if the sentences are a little sketchy, was hard to put into words what is going on.

Hello, I have a question. My Lenovo Yoga 720 15.6" doesn't overheat, although I've noticed something rather odd. When I play Fifa 17 with the charger plugged in, the fans are very loud and the laptop gets pretty hot. When I play Fifa 17 on battery only (charger not plugged in) the fans are quite silent and the laptop doesn't get hot at all. Why is that? For all I know, I would expect the exact opposite...Thanks in advance!Kind regards,Tijs

A:Lenovo Yoga 720 15" : hot when playing games on charger, cool when playing games on battery???

The CPU runs at full speed when it is plugged in and runs more slowly on battery to save power.  Faster = more heat.

Hello all,

I've been having a few problems with my laptop since I bought it. The problem mainly occurs when I'm playing a game (usually xcom: enemy unknown or deus ex HR at the moment) but has occurred when I'm browsing the internet (albeit far less often). The BSODs appear to be random but I'm using a blue tooth mouse and have noticed the BSOD will usually happened if I'm using it. I've also noticed that my laptop screen with black out for a split second on games that are quite graphics intensive for my system.

Its been frustrating me a lot so I reinstalled and fully updated windows 7. The GPU drivers are all up to date also.

I've attached the SF file that is required and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks for your time

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

I just updated and rebuilt my PC and have reinstalled Win 7 64 bit and am constantly getting a BSOD while using the PC. Specifically while downloading/installing/playing games. I have also had the error occur just while surfing the internet.
From the program Blue Screen Viewer it seems to be caused by ntoskrnl.exe+7f1c0 and/or ntoskrnl.exe+7e769
I can not find any solution to fix this issue, I have updated drivers, I have ran the Microsoft memory checker, , I have changed out my memory, tried 2 other video cards, tried two different wireless network cards, now on wired connection, I even changed motherboards, got the errors on both SSD and HDD. The only things I haven't changed out is the PS and CPU, since I am using the PC to write this I am ruling out the CPU as the issue.

I have used Memtest86 and prime95 to test the memory and CPU, nothing is coming back with errors or issues. I did run driver verifier and got two .dmp files for some specific files but not sure what to do with those now. They are included in the attachement

It seems to be software/driver issue but I can not figure it out.

Any help would be great, thanks!

SP1 isn't installed, please do the following:

Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1
1. Visit the PC manufacturer's website and update ALL drivers. DO NOT use Windows Update or the "Update drivers" function of Device Manager.
2. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
3. Visit Windows Update and get all updates (may take repeated visits)
4. Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
5. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates. May take repeated visits, but keep it up until you get several "Windows is updated" results.
If you're having difficulties with installing a Service Pack, please use the SURTool from this link: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?
Also, check out this troubleshooting link from Microsoft: Troubleshoot problems installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Hello guys. So here is my issue i dont really know how to specific it further then this still hope it will help.

I have been getting BSOD for a while now and it's getting to the point i cant do a single thing on the computer. I did the config for dumps and so on and ended up with this RAR file with all the info i assume. I mostly get the bluescreen when i try to watch anime etc on googlechrome. It never works it's a matter of seconds before the BSOD comes. But when watching it on other browsers like opera it works just fine "mostly" even there it bluescreens from time to time. And then there is when it's most fatal, Playing onlinegames. Whenever I play online games like World of warcraft, League of Legends, Heroes of Neweart etc etc etc i risk getting bluescreens. It differs very much from game to game how often the bluescreens appear and it seems to not be preformance related since sometimes i play constantly for hours when maxing out games and pushing the computer to it's limits when it comes to frames. And still the bluescreen lies in dorment waiting for a more suitable interrupt for me. From the looks of it the bluescreen is related mostly to my operatingsystem more then commponents after i looked at the dumpfiles via "Bluescreenviewer".

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this and i hope you guys can help me with this. also this is my first post so I maybe did this typical "bad thread", Still i hope this will get me atleast closer to... Read more

Before we can even begin to find the underlying cause you need to update the following drivers. Especially asacpi.sys. Yours is from 2005

ASACPI.sys 3/27/2005 10:30:36 PM
Lycosa.sys 1/18/2008 4:51:42 AM
nvm62x64.sys 10/17/2008 5:01:06 PM
netr28x.sys 2/25/2009 11:02:09 PM
How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference

Hi Guys,

Hope someone can help me,

I am being re-directed by google when i click on any links, I have also had problems with installing certain programs (malware bytes / Hijack this / AVG) the only way around this has been for me to re-name them. Initialy the problem I had was with a recycler which didnt let me gain access to my drives but i managed to fix this from an application on the net.

I noticed the problem with google the same time as the recycler but it is still there now..
I have included logs below.

Can someone help me before I launch this laptop out of the window.

I had a hard drive prob so yesterday had a new hard drive (80GB, it used to be a 40) and re install of windows. I have Office 2003 on.

I have today had some new software for my business installed which operates in Access.

I have noticed since the Hard Drive how the computer wont open the files straightaway sometimes or any other programmes.. It will put the egg timer on and look as if it is looking for it then the egg timer stops. Sometimes if I wait, the computer will "Catch up" and everything will catch up and I will have all programms open at once.

I cannot open Task Manager when this is happening and while Web Pages update nothing will help me

A:Comp just not playing

How fast is you comp do you have enough memory? Also did you do a fresh install of all your programs or copied some from the other drive. Try defrag check to see if one of those programs is outdated or has expired and go though and delete any old programs you are not using.. and then scan spyware virus and see what happens

hi everyone,

whenever i play a game on my computer after a while it crashes saying (gamename).exe has encountered an error and must be closed, i have no idea what this is. I'm not even sure what to check for, or what info to give but basically every game i run crashes after a while. Eq2 can take hours to crash, but as soon as i hit the "stress test" option on countstrike source it does this.

My video card is nvidia geforce 6600
2 gigs of ram
windows xp athlon 3.2

When it crashed last with EQ2 it said it would include a file frmo my temp folder called 6191appcompat.exe. If thats relevent tell me and ill get more info on it.

Tell me what info you need i'll check back tomorrow.

Well basically a few days ago my computer screen would go black in the middle of playing a game and it would force me to restart my computer because I couldn't do anything. I thought it was a bug with titan quest since it hadn't happened in half life 2 or WoW. Sadly this morning after 5 minutes of playing WoW the same thing happened so I restarted and tried half life 2. The game almost immediately did the same thing and when I tried to restart my computer won't even turn on properly. It sounds like it is running fine but I get no picture and the 3 lock lights dont come on when I try.

My luck with my computer has been nothing but bad in the past year. I am now on my third hard drive, 3rd Graphics card, 2nd motherboard, and almost needed a new sound card. If anyone is able to help me, please do because all of this money I have pretty much put down the drain has led me to think I should just forget about fixing it and sell the parts and spend my money on something else.

my comp specs:
512 RAM

Have you upgraded any hardware recently? The most likely problem is that your graphics driver has not been upgraded. I remeber oblivion kept freezing in the exact same circumstances as yours untill I upgraded my graphics driver... What chipset is your graphics card?

The game I'm working with at the moment is the sims 2 with 3 expansions. I just got a new PC and put vista on it. When I first started playing the sims 2 it was running perfectly, no skipping or anything. Now its already starting to skip, like when you fast forward time you can see the time skipping minutes like 10:50-10:54, it wasnt doing that at first.

Questions: Does custom content affect the speed of the game? How can I optimize my computer so there is no skipping in the sims 2 (its not horrible but its not perfect anymore). I have 2 gigs ram, geforce 9500xtreme vid card, 2.13 ghz core 2 duo.

When I put in my Battlefield 2 CD into the ROM, it auto plays the way it should, then it asks what language, and then I press install, the installation wizard opens the BF2 install screen, then the bar loads, then the screen blinks a greenish color then nothing happens.

Keep in mind I had BF2 on my comp before, but uninstalled it to move it to a new HD. And help would be appreciated. I just can not figure this out!

Got a new comp, games won't work... please help

I recently bought a new computer, has 512 RAM, AMD Anthlon 2500+ (1830 MHz) and a 70 GB Hard drive, video card is an onboard one, an SiS one: Plug and Play Monitor on SiS 650/651/740/661FX/741/760 Series.

Now here is my problem, I've tried a few games : Alien vs Predator 2, Warcraft 3 the Frozen Throne, and World of Warcraft.

The games either get an error, or the computer just restarts itself all together without any notification, and I try the game again, few mins into it, happens again... This really frustrates me, I contacted the comps technical support and I haven't got any answer yet, so I'm trying here because this is my bros new comp and I just feel really bad for him right now.

I need to know what can cause this, can it be the card? I tried to look for updated drivers, but I don't know what model it is and I tried the site and just coundl't figure it out, I also got dirext x9c. Anyways can the restarting and errors be from the video card? Could it be because the drivers arent updated, if there is an update? Can installing a new video card fix this problem? I really need some help guys...Thanks in advance. All suggestions are welcomed.

Also, now when I try and run World of Warcraft it says:

This application has encountered a critical error:

ERROR #0 (0x85100000)
Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe
File: C:\build\buildWoW\Storm\Source\SFile.cpp

Download video drivers here http://www.sis.com/support/
But onboard video, especially SIS, is useless when it comes to playing games that have come out in the past few years. You need to get a video card. Hopefully your motherboard has an AGP slot. You can get a decent card for about $60.

I have a custom built computer and when i run Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 it crashes. This is the only game i have installed on my computer right now so it is the only one that crashes.
Motherboard: A-Bit AV8
CPU: AMD Athlon 64-bit 3.0 ghz I think
First VIDEO: ATI 9600 Radeon all-in wonder
NEWEST VIDEO: GeForce 6200
Both of my video cards aren't fixing the problem so i don't think it's the drivers
While running the game it will go to a black screen and then the desktop will appear with an error message saying RCT3Pro.exe and then asks to send an error report.

Hey I'm new here and was wondering if I could possibly get some help with this issue I have been experiencing. When I've been in World Of Warcraft for quite some time, or any other game for that matter, my computer totally locks up, and until now I never noticed that I received a BSOD after it reboots itself.

I built my system myself and the specs are as follows
MoBo: Asus A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939
CPU: AMD 4000+ 2.4 ghz
RAM: Patriot 2 x 1GB PC 3200 DDR 184 Pin D400
Drive: WD 320g 7200 RPM
GFX Card: eVGA 7950 GX2 512MB

I debugged the BSOD and in return I got:

Sorry I don't know where to post this so I'll post it here. An hour ago, I was playing Payday 2 and my comp just decided to turn off. After I turned it on, I can hear the comp turn on but there's only black screen. This sometimes happen to me only on start up and I'll just turn it off and then turn it back on and everything would be normal. Well after I dusted off my comp, it started again for a few minutes and then it decided to restart and there's just black screen. Restarted it a few times to see if it goes back to normal but no luck, just black screen. Does anyone know what's wrong with my comp? I don't know much about computers, just bought parts and had someone assemble it for me. Comp is about 2 years old. I'm guessing it's my graphics card. Ty

I am becoming extremely annoyed. If i could format my computer i would, but unfortunately i had the comp custom made and they wanted to charge extra for the disc so i have no disc to reformat. long story so Anyhow..

Almost every game i play, my computer will either freeze up during play or my computer will just reboot(without error)

I'm running

AMD Athlon XP 1.6ghz
768MB PC2100 RAM
Ge-Force FX 5700 Ultra 128MB
Win XP
400 watt power supply
Asus A7V333-X Motherboard

I have all the latest drivers for my vid card and MB.

My Hard drive is an FAT32(it's been partitioned into 2 drives). My main drive is my C: Which is only like 18gb, not nearly enough for my games. My other drive is 55gb which is where i have my games installed. I "think" this might be the problem but i don't know why it would be. My 2 other games run fine when installed in my D drive. Which is Conquer online(1.5gb) and Continuum(like 5mb).

Welcome to the forums,

Firstly you might like to follow the tip here :

To diasble the default setting whereby XP will just reboot on encountering certain errors. That way the next time it occurs you will get the 'Blue Screen' with an error message. You can then either post the message here / or run a Google search for other people who have reported the same error previously.

Just for info - I had the same situation some months ago. The error thrown up suggested it was related to a graphics driver problem - Google searches for the error (nv4_disp.dll) took me to sites where others were recommended to experiment with other drivers. However in my case it was related to a faulty stick of ram (I had 2 x 256mb).

Switching the ram around did not correct the problem - however with them each in place individually, I found the system would not boot with one of them.

As you state you have 768 mb, I am assuming you have 512 + 256. You might try the above if only to rule it out.
