windows 8.1 pricing models

Q: windows 8.1 pricing models

i just upgraded to 8.1 and microsoft wants me to buy a license--thats ok--but then it shows the price as 289$

my question--what do i get for this? can I use this later on another pc? my current pc is old and i don't want to have to buy another license when i change pc's within 1 yea or less.

i can go buy an oem 8.1 software for about 140$ that i understand is only good for 1 pc.
any insight on how this works??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: windows 8.1 pricing models

What did you upgrade from?

How did you manage to upgrade without buying a license beforehand?

If you were already running win 8.0 , there should be no charge, it is an update/service pack.

Prelude:

From what I can gather there are 4 versions of windows 8:

* Regular - not for sale, only manufacturer pre-installed.

* Pro - For sale in computer supply stores, An upgrade from previous such as W7, Vista, XP.

* Pro - that will only enhance "regular" to Pro.

* RT - only for tablets, notebooks and such devices, manufacturer installed. A reduced version without some Pro features.

* W8 - Enterprise, Commercial, not for sale to the general public, only for corporations and government.

Pricing:

* W8 Pro upgrade. Windows has it on the Internet as a download for $39.99. The offer expires at the end of December 2012.

* W8 Pro upgrade from W7, Vista, XP, for sale in computer stores, Costco, Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA. Costco's price is $66.99. The others are $69.99.

* Windows Pro only for existing Win 8 regular already installed. Thus the regular manufacturer version is upgraded to Pro for $69.99. *( That would be actually a value of $69.99 plus &69.99 - $139.98 ).

The Windows Pro at Staples has on the price tag: "Retail price $199, $130 off. Offer expires February 2013.

So anyone who is contemplation purchasing a Windows Pro should be aware of/about the coming price increases. Looks as though in March 2013 it will cost everyone $199 so far as I can ascertain now.

Apparently installing Win 8 to upgrade Vista and XP will require re-installing all current software presently on the computer whereas a Win 7 will not.

Are there both upgrade and non-upgrade versions? It seems all the pricing information for Windows 8 ($40) and Windows 8 Pro ($70) has been for upgrade versions but perhaps I have it wrong and one version works either way.

If there is a more expensive non-upgrade version, what is the price?

A:Windows 8 Pricing for non-upgrade

There is a System Builder version which is a Full retail but no price has been announced.

I'm going to have to re-buy my windows licences because I am going to replace 3 PCs primary components; Motherboard, CPU and RAM. The only active component not being replaced is the HDD.

When I talked to Microsoft they said I have to re-buy Windows. The $1300 I spent on licences When Windows 7 was first released is now a dead investment.

It's no wonder that people pirate windows!

When doing research on pricing I came across these sites...

Microsoft - 3x3pk Win7 Ult64B+10x1PK DVDRW - Catalogue | Alphastore

and

MICROSOFT GLC-00894 - 3x3pk Win7 Ult64B+10x1PK DVDRW

Both have the same product code. Now I'm assuming 3 x 3pk only means 3 licences, not nine, since retailers are renowned for splitting 3pk OEI OEM DVD packs and selling off individually.

I've emailed both companies twice now and asked for clarification on number of licences and how many unique software keys I actually get with the purchase. But neither have answered.

Anyone have any ideas why one price can be more than 5 times the other, when neither say upgrade, full or OEM??

Anyone have any recommendations on the cheapest place to buy 3 copies of legit licences with individual keys... I am assuming of course that each machine must have a unique key..

thanks
Tanya

Hi Tanyam,
It is perfectly legal (and possible) to download and burn an .iso of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and burn it to a disc and use it....... IF you use your current product key.

Burn Disc Image - ISO or IMG file

Refer to the above link on how to burn the image to a disc. If you own a file-sharing program such as BitTorrent or uTorrent, you should be able to use it to download an .iso. If you need help finding a good . iso, I'll be glad to help. I can also find you a non torrent download if you wish.

Yes, but you need to do some editing of the cversion.ini file and have a RC key. there are several threads here at SF that have explained how. You should do a search for upgrade vs clean.

The general availability of Windows Server 2008 R2 has brought to the table a variety of complex offerings in terms of pricing and licensing which customers might find difficult to navigate. In this regard, Microsoft has taken the necessary steps in order to ensure that companies looking to leverage the latest iteration of Windows Server for their infrastructures will be able to benefit from an insight into purchase costs as well as the license options available. ?Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Overview? is a guide put together by the company and offered via the Microsoft Download Center.

Hi there
available if you want to test it you can get a download via TECHNET SUBSCRIPTION.

Of course you can't use the technet download in a commercial organisation - but for developers etc who want experience in using etc etc then a technet subscription ~250 - 300 USD is a NO BRAINER IMO.

Also good for HOME users who want to learn about installing and using Servers.

If you look for promo codes you can probably get a discount too on your technet subscription.

Incidentally Students *might* be able to get a free or cheap version of W2008 Server too - same conditions not for commercial use of course.

Note the download from Technet doesn't have an expiry unlike the Free Trial download and you can use several copies.

Hi guys,

New to the forum and have searched for some answers on this topic.

I have a small business with 16 computers I need to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. The computers currently have Windows 10 Home. (Side note: Will I have any issues with drivers, etc etc upgrading these computers from Home to Pro???)

Is it worth it to purchase volume licensing vs just buying OEM copies? Also when I go on CDW's site, are the "Open license" the ones I need to purchase? And are these licenses only good for 1 computer or all? (some say one license, others say one user, one is labeled 500+).

Any help is greatly appreciated. I need to get this figured out ASAP.

-Mark B.

A:Windows 10 Pro Volume licensing (very confusing pricing)

A volume license is restricted to a certain number of instances, but you can move them around as you see fit. Thus, as long as you deactivate the license for Computer A and then activate the license for Computer B, you've effected a license transfer from one machine to the other. Don't buy OEM Licenses: while cheap, they're (a) supposed to be provided by people who sell them with a computer and installing them on some other machine technically violates the license and (b) once installed, the license stays with that machine and cannot be transferred from one PC to another. As for reputable vendors to contact for volume licenses, I've done business with Software Wholesale International (now part of Crayon) for years, and they continue to offer the best prices on MSDN subscriptions and volume licenses I've found anywhere for small-timers like me. You may want to check them out as a point of comparison with CDW (whom I've also done business with).
HTH,
--Ed--

PS: volume licenses can also come as part of a subscription deal through Open Value offerings (Microsoft Open Programs | Microsoft Volume Licensing). These may be a better deal for your business, as long as you don't mind paying them every year for your Windows seats (and other software).

PPS: working with the Microsoft Volume Licensing Center is a major PITA. Look for a vendor who will help you navigate their systems and get your account set up so you can access and use your licenses properly. SWI has videos to get people... Read more

Nothing official from Microsoft

When it comes down to Windows 7 special offerings, Microsoft still has one or two aces up its sleeve. While it revealed the official pricing details for the upgrade and full retail boxes of Windows 7, and went live with a program designed to allow consumers in select markets to buy the Home Premium and Professionals SKUs of the OS at considerable discounts, the Redmond company has yet to unveil discount initiatives and price tags for additional offerings and flavors of the next iteration of the Windows client. This is the case with the Windows 7 Family Pack and the Windows Anytime Upgrade options. We've seen a number of topics and questions from users whose Acer model is not listed in the Windows 10 update support list, which I'll link below.

The list that Acer provided is for products that we are committed to helping support running the Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft has also stated that they have worked very hard to make sure that the upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is available for as many users as possible and that the Windows 10 operating system will work with as many different hardware components as possible.

If your unit is not on this list, you're still eligible for Microsoft's upgrade to Windows 10; however, Acer cannot guarantee full compatibility with all aspects of the PC. Again, Acer is not preventing users from taking advantage of the upgrade offer with Windows 10; however, if your unit is not listed, it's possible that you may run into trouble with specific components of your PC not working well, or at all, with Windows 10. The Acer Community is a great place for users in the second scenario to be able to work together to find sufficient drivers or applications that will support their needs.

For those awaiting the imminent arrival of AMD's Vishera (aka Piledriver, aka Bulldozer rev.2, aka Bulldozer rev. C0), HotHardware have published pricing via Shopblt.com.

If AMD's strategy is consistant with the previous Bulldozer release, then pricing indicates the parts' relative performance merits in relation to Intel's current mainstream CPU range.
At $US 253, the FX-8350 launches at approximately the same price as its predecessor - FX-8150 MSRP at launch being $245. AMD seem to have noted that the FX-8120 took a sizeable chunk of the 8150's possible sales, being some $40 cheaper but offering comparable performance. AMD aren't being nearly so generous this time around.
Launch is rumoured to be October 18

How long is a piece of string?

You should be thinking in terms of % markup on the hardware and software that you are supplying, and as its a lot you can afford to take less % than if it was just a couple of items.

On labour you need to set your hourly rate, then either go with that and give an estimate of the time to the client, (always over-estimate so that when it takes less time the client is happy) or work it out and give a fixed price to the client for a set number of works/jobs.

Make it clear that the set price is for the works specified, and if they add anything else its extra on top at your hourly rate. Otherwise you can come a cropper, as I have never been to a client site yet where they haven't said "Oh, while you are here, can you just...." which will really upset things on a fixed price contract.

Hope that gives you food for thought.

Hello, I was researching RAM for a build I am planning to buy this Black Friday (Can't wait ) and I noticed that I found some really cheap RAM and I don't know if this is a unreliable pos, or if this is a genuinely good find.

I know that lower CAS latency, higher frequency, and if you want your computer to run cooler, a lower voltage will make for nice ram.

This is the RAM I came across:
Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00

For the most part (85%) of the reviews are 5 eggs, and it is $10 off with a promo code. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy these?

Also, I am going to be getting the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard and an i7 3770 and I was curious if anyone could tell me if this RAM is compatible with my planned setup.

A:Curious about RAM pricing...

Well depends on what you are going to use for the new build but the other RAM looks ok for what you have now.

Oh meant to mention if you idn't now turn of the defrag you don't need it with the SSD. Plus take a look at this if you already haven't - more speed.

I have seen loads of stories since Microsoft announced the pricing for Windows 7 last week and I've read several stories that seem to conflict with each other. The main conflict seem to be over the "No upgrade in Europe" thing. I currently have a machine running Windows 7 RC that was originally a Vista PC.

Can some explain to me what the options (e.g. what price) will be to upgrade this computer Windows 7 Home Premium once the full version is released in October.

Also, apart from that, will I be able to "in place" upgrade from Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 release? (e.g. upgrade instead of wipe and install???)

I am in the process of looking for a paid for OEM for 10 Pro as I want to keep my 7 Pro key and buying one of those is just as expensive according to my local dealer - $209 + p&p which is pretty good.

Now I am also thinking at the same time what sort of mark up these dealers make over what they but the software in for resale as soem EBay sellers for example (not that I would buy from them) are offering the key but no DVD for s little as $120. So in my mind making say even a 25% mark up on what sellers pay Microsoft for what exactly do Microsoft produce their software for??

A:Just wondering re pricing

It probably depends upon how many OEM licenses they purchase at one time, but I don't know for sure. It violates Microsoft licensing agreement to use OEM system builders licenses for personal use on computers that you are not building to sell (except for Windows 8.0).

Ok, I work as a programmer, and virtually everything I do is web application programming in ASP, .NET, etc...

Anyhow, I want to start moonlighting, but oddly my stumbling block isn't so much finding customers, it's knowing what to charge, and how to break it down for them.

Yes, I can tell someone it will $800 (or whatever), but I want to show them how I come to that price, or why it's a good price, because it's cheaper than if they paid for all the things I'd do individually.

Basically, I'm currently just looking for design websites that show what they charge for each of their services, and how they break down everything.

If you are a web designer, can you let me know how you break down your bill, or if you've had work done, let me know how you were charged. Or if you're bored and want to do a little surfing and see what you can come up with

It would help immensely.

Based on the history of past windows OS's, is it possible to estimate how much cheaper the full versions of Windows 7 would be after a year? Specifically the professional or ultimate versions?

I'm using XP Pro and I'm very comfortable with it and don't feel like I need a new OS just because it's new and has the latest bells and whistles. My 2 factors for deciding to upgrade depend on price and future OS plans from Microsoft.

For price considerations, I can get the full version of Win 7 Professional for $100. Should I wait to upgrade to Win 7 professional to see if prices will get better, or is this already a price that even waiting won't beat?

As for future OS's, is it worth it to get 7 if Microsoft is going to come out with a new one in several years? How long do you think 7 is going to last? XP's had a very long lifespan, so if it's going to be anything like that, I would consider upgrading. But if not, maybe I can hold on to XP for a few more years for the next OS.

Given these 2 factors, any recommendations?

I started with a pre-beat version in Dec 2008, then all the differenet versions to the retail release. Win7 will have a long productive lifespan. $ 100 is a good price at the present time. Try it, you'll like it.

I am absolutely excited about the device and its capabilities and performance: great display (Full Hd + touch screen), high performance (Intel m3), fast boot times and data access (256 Gb SSD), long standby and operation times (due to low/optimized power consumtion - Intel m).For a short period this model was available for 499? in Germany and I made the deal! In my view this is a phenomenal value for price ratio. And there is nothing comparable available at competition! Unfortunately Lenovo product managers realized this fact too. So the pahsed out the models of Yoga 700 and replaced by the new model named Yoga 710. In terms of features it is more or less the same (less I/O but metal case).BUT: prices start at 789? now (699$ in the US) !!! I think it would have a great opportunity for Lenovo to place a top seller with the previous model and pricing of Yoga 700.

I'm trying to understand all of these pricing changes with Rapidshare. I initially had a premium account and I guess the remainder of that time has now been converted into Rapids. I was on the Rapid Medium plan at first which cost me 20 Rapids per day, gave me 50 GB's of storage and allowed me 5 GB's of traffic per day. First of all...What does that mean with 5 GB's of allowed traffic per day. Does that mean I can download up to 5 GB's of data per day? Also, am I charged the 20 Rapids every day, even if I don't download or upload anything?

Also, for some reason, today I received an email from Rapidshare which said that it was bumping me up to the Rapid Big plan, though I don't know why because I don't believe I went over the 5 GB's of allowed traffic in the Rapid Medium plan. So just for the heck of it I went back into my account and changed it back to Rapid Medium.

Also I'm not sure I understand what's currently in my account. I accessed my account earlier today to try to get a read on things. It was still listed as a Rapid Big account and showed that I had 3582 Rapids. I don't even know if that's a large amount or not. It also said I had 13,065 MB traffic left. I'm not sure what that means either. Is that how much left I can download before I have to buy more Rapids?

Then I did some downloading after that, and after finishing, checked my account again. It still showed that I had 3582 Rapids but my traf... Read more

Maybe the following paragraph from the forum Rules will be clearer.

I'm a bit surprised that you are not more familiar with that rule.

G'day, I've got a tricky Excel spreadsheet to build that lists a big range of product ranges and sub-components and their prices. I would like to use columns with drop-down list of options, which then displays a different range of components depending on the options selected.
It's for a modular kitchen componentry product range.
Basically there are two major ranges. (range A and B)
Each range has about 30 or so cabinet modules, with unique names, reference numbers, descriptions and order numbers.
Each of those modules have a number of components to go with them, offering a chives of about a dozen colours, again with unique pricing etc.
So ideally, I'd like to be able do a global range a or b selection, then pick a module from a list of that ranges modules, and then the appropriate colour doors and drawer fronts.
I'm thinking all thus would occur in a single row, but repeated for multiple modules in multiple rows.
I'm using excel 2007
Any help to get me started in the right direction would be great

I'm looking to buy W7 Pro, but am stuck at the massively differing prices on offer.

Going to amazon.co.uk and selecting new, prices range from ?40 to ?200. New. Many are at about the ?100 level, and many are at ?160. I don't want to post the exact URL for breaking some forum guidelines, but what gives?

I want to pay cheap sure, but I want to know I'm not losing out on anything and that it's legal etc.

Any advice?

There are 3 types of DVD
OEM, for manufacturers and for only one computer, very cheap
Upgrade, about $125.00 USA
Full Retail. much more expensive
If you have a qualifying OS, that you can upgrade from, go for the upgrade version. It is the same as the full retail.

Thanks for any advice.

Good morning. I would like to have an idea of what to offer a friend for a 2013 Sony Vaio netbook that cost approximately $300 in 2013. I don't want to offend, on the other hand, I want the lowest fair price. Can someone make a suggestion. Thanks.

A:Pricing on second-hand netbook

What's the model number of that netbook, and what Windows version is it running?
Have you examined it to confirm that it's working okay?
Does it still contain all the programs, files, etc. from its original owner, or has a fresh install of its operating system been done?

If it cost about $300 when it was bought brand new in 2013, it's not worth very much now.
Depending on what condition it's in, it's probably not worth more than $50 - $100.
Is your friend willing to refund your money if it turns out to be a lemon?

Hi all . I'm a CPU/network tech with NO experiece in programing. My largest client needs aninventory control rogram, but they're quite set in thier ways of how they like everything to look, act, function, etc. I'd like to hire out an access programmer for them, and they've inquired as to what the cost of such a service might be. Before I go a "rent a coder" or any of that, I was wondering if you guys who do programming for aliving had a ballpark figure. It's simply inventory control, that needs the ability for laymen to add, remove, or "Rent" parts into and out of inventory. (also invoicing, as the parts have rental prices).

I hate to ask what might be a "dumb question," but when you don't know the price of goods, you can get taken to the cleaners. I also am quite aware works-for-hire prices vary, but a general idea would be a great benifit. $200? $500? $1000? $5000? $10,000?

Thanks again : )

I am living in UK.
I do have two computers, running Windows XP and Vista.
I wish to buy a family pack for clean installation on both. But I cannot see an option to buy Windows 7 Family pack Home Premium for full installation. I found only family pack for upgrade.
I play a lot with computer and I may crash the whole system, so I like full installation on all computers so that I can reinstall from scratch.

Thank you for advice.

A:Question about pricing and family pack

You can do a clean install no problems the first time you use an upgrade disk.. Just be sure you use imaging software to create a disk image in case you bork your system...

Ok MS, Apple has just applied some serious pricing pressure for upgrading. Due in September, current Mac owners can upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for only $29!! Now, I know I know, the OS's are very different and I don't expect MS to go THAT low for Vista owners...but come on! You just KNOW the MS folks are cussing a bit now.. They must have just dropped another notch lower on their planned pricing scheme as a result. Can you imagine?? Upgrading to 7 from Vista for that price???

A:upgrade pricing pressure from Apple

i totally agree. i really think that Microsoft needs to seriously take a moment and rethink things for a bit. especially with the low blows that apple dealt them during their WWDC today.

they need to do something.
