Help(again!) Removable drives have disappeared?

Q: Help(again!) Removable drives have disappeared?

Sorry, it's me again! I'm ready for throwing this pc through the window. I'm trying to upload photos from a memory card, which I've done hundreds of times, and nothing is showing( i normally get the box which opens automatically), and when i check Computer, none of the removable drives are showing. What on earth is going on? Somebody help, please, before I crack up altogether!

Preferred Solution: Help(again!) Removable drives have disappeared?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Help(again!) Removable drives have disappeared?

Check Device Manager for red/ yellow flags -
START | type devmgmt.msc

In Dev Mgr, look under "Memory Technology Driver".

Go to system manufacturer's support site and see if updated drivers are available.

Hi: we have a Supermicro server with an Intel C600 series controller and we would like to use some of the ports and their disks as removable devices, to allow to copy media from one server to another. I mean:
- The controller has 4 ports with 4 disk on each, 16 disks in total
- The first 4 ports will remain the same, not removable (OS in Raid 1, Media in Raid 0)
- The other ports (2-4) will be used with SATA SSD drives and we need to remove them via Eject hardware (as an attached hard drive) and then being able to attach them to the backup server to read the media.

So far as I know, there's a DWORD I may need to add in the registry, but a little help would be more than welcome to solve this.

This is the opposite way, to not allow the HDD to be ejected.

I have a HP computer with a cdrom and a cdwriter...my problem is My computer folder lists these as removable drives. I have sought other help, done numerous things...such as removing the cdroms from device manager and letting Windows 98 re-install them. I can't read these in Windows Explorer either.
I have Adaptech Cd Creator 4.0 and in this program under cd info....the contents of both drives can be seen, also I can test these 2 drives, and they work perfectly under the tests. Any ideas why My Computer and Explorer see these drives as removable? I have exhausted my ideas on this one?????

I was cleaning a PC that was infected with a tough rootkit and eventually rebuilt w/ OS to ensure all was well. During the attempted cleaning, I had a external hard drive and a flash drive connected to the PC. My question is ... can rootkits and their similar counterparts spread to attached drives such as these [and eventually infect the next PC they are attached to]?

I have since used the flash drive in a new Dell PC w/ Win7 and it is acting a bit strange all of a sudden after sitting overnight.

Thanks much!
Brian

A:Are Rootkits able to jump to external drives or removable drives?

Yes,that is quite easy,especially with .exe files.You ned to clean the drive and scan what ever iy connected to.Were they both Win7?EDIT:You can download and use Autorun Eater or Autorun USB Virus Finder which will allow removal of any suspicious 'autorun.inf' files they find. Panda USB Vaccine. Computer Vaccination will prevent any AutoRun file from running, regardless of whether the removable device is infected or not. USB Vaccination disables the autorun file so it cannot be read, modified or replaced and creates an AUTORUN_.INF as protection against malicious code. The Panda Resarch Blog advises that once USB drives have been vaccinated, they cannot be reversed except with a format. If you do this, be sure to back up your data files first or they will be lost during the formatting process.Another option for XP users is Flash_Disinfector by sUBs. Please read About Flash Disinfector by Papakid and USB/Flash Drive Safety by TheJoker.Finally, always scan USB flash drives and any external storage media after they have been used in other computer systems, even your own. An easy way to do this is to download "ClamWin Portable Antivirus", put it on your USB Flash Drive, update its definition files and perform a scan.{borrowed from our quietman7}

had a similar experience with my WD MyBook. It refused to recognize the drivers, and would only see it as an "unknown USB device", not allowing any access. However, I powered down the drive, restarted the PC, plugged it in again and it came up just fine. No problem since, with the drive being powered off and on several times.... Really would like to know if it was a Vista glitch, or something to do with the drive (could be because I bought it used...)

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

i have a intel 945g chipset Compaq presario sr5160IL, with 2 gb ram and USB 2.0
>>>i dont have system restore ON on my machine.<<<
till a few days back all my usb removable drives were working fine.
i brought USB flash drive from my friend, KINGSTON DATA TRAVELLOR 2GB,
windows says "Installing Device Driver" and says it cant find driver for you DTI and hence says to insert a CD which came with Drive. However in my other PCs its working fine, installs fine.
I noticed all my OWN USB drives, that have been used before on PC are working OK, but this drive isnt. Similarly i tried to use a NEW 16GB transcend drive, which also give ditto same error.
I have figured that windows has lost ability to install new USB removable drives.
So, i googled and deleted my infcache1 file [sites suggested it was corrupt], WIndows remade it, No respite. I even put USBSTOR.ini and USBSTOR.pnf from file repository to c:\windows\inf. No respite.
I lastly deleted my c:\windows\inf folder, And replaced with another one from my friend's Vista. NO RESPITE.

It's common if you're using AHCI.

There may be a BIOS setting to set the internal drives as not removable. It's not universal, though.

Hello,
This is the first time posting. I have a small home-based business and travel alot. I bought a nice 80GB Lacie External Hard Drive and this worked out really nice, but found that my Computer's C Drive kept saving my very sensitive financial and database (I use Alpha) even though I saved the data to my External Drive...

The problem I have is there are visitor's and some part-time employee's who have access to my office. I don't want to lock the machine up, nor the office room door as these same people need to get in there.

Can you suggest a removable hard drive that can easily slip out of my Dell E520 so I can just take it on the road with me?

I'm not a cheapskate, but I don't want to spent like over a $1,000 for such an item. Or am I just dreaming...anyway, any help you can give me would be helpful.

Also, I would gladly pay someone to speak with me on this matter.

I would appreciate any helpful responses to this issue.

Cheers,
Yvette

A:Which Removable Hard Drives are Best

I think it would be a bad idea to have a C: drive that slides out, although there are caddies that allow this. It's not shock proofed like a portable, You'll drop it. You'll move it when it's still spinning. You'll lose the data.

It shouldn't be too hard to fgure out why data is getting written to both your C: and your external drives. It's probably not a bad idea anyway to have them backed up in two places. What if you lost the Lacie. If you install password protection on those files (and you should anyway if your Lacie were to get lost), then they would be safe from casual snoops. A user password on the PC would also do that.

And you might also consider USB thumb drives with password protection for your financial data.

OK. Now, I'm fed up. Vista has some serious problems with removal drives (flash drives). I would connect my Sansa E250 to my computer to recharge its battery before going to bed and in the morning, before going out, I would safely remove it from power. BUT! Vista says that something is using it! WTF! I've only plugged it onto the computer to recharge my portable music player device! I haven't done anything else. WTF Vista is thinking?

A:Vista & Removable Drives

I've had that happen.
When I connect an external hard disk via a USB adapter, the Safely Remove Hardware thing from the tray sometimes works OK and sometimes not. It depends what's on the particular hard disk, such as whether it only has data files or also has a Windows OS on it.

I don't know of any solution except just don't use the Remove Hardware tray icon. If you are sure there is no reading or writing happening on the USB device, it's probably safe to just unplug it. If that seems too risky, you could put the computer into Sleep mode, then unplug the device.

My sister's computer is a HPW17E and is running on Windows VISTA. All of her removable disk drives I, H, F, G, and E are full. Her C drive is a fourth full and D drive about 3/4 full. I believe she may have a virus. They were using Trend Micro Antivirus 2008 plus antispyware. They did not renew there antivirus software when it expired. Will the old virus software still work except for any new viruses except for any new viruses not being detected, or when the old software expires would they no longer have any kind of virus protection? The screen on the computer had went black. After leaving it off they are able to get back on finally. What are your suggestions to fixing the full drives? They have a ton of pictures, not backed up. Any suggestions to prevent from losing these pictures? Any helps appreciated!

A:Removable drives i, h, f, g, and e are full

You should check out under General Security what freeware is recommended for Internet Security and virus protection. As far as I know, when a program is not updated, you are not protected.
Are all those drives harddrives built in? Or USB drives? If you can, get an external drive to backup each drive. If they are usb drives, only plug one at a time in, then you shouldn't have a problem.
Is this a desktop or a laptop? Laptops overheat when too much is plugged in and shut down. Also when a virus checker (even if outdated) first runs, it can get stalled by too many drives to be checked. I unplug my USB sticks and then everything works fine.
Updating memory also helps, since you didn't clarify what component the computer has, every bit of informations helps the volunteers to come up with an answer.
And Welcome to TSG,

Hello N.P

This could just be a glitch or the result of a malware infection.
Try the drive association fix here
Scroll down to
?Frequently used Tips & fixes for Windows XP?
Select the ?Drive association fix for XP?

If that does not help
Open Windows Explorer
Tools/Folder Options/View

Put a check at ?Show hidden files and folders?
Remove check from ?Hide extensions for known file types?

Remove check from ?Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)?
Apply
OK

Now look for "Autorun.inf" in the root of the drive. By this I mean H:\ etc

If you can`t see it
Start and select "Search" and search for
"autorun.inf" (Search the computer including hidden files)

Can you see a file "Autorun.inf"
If so rename it to a "a *.bak" file. (Right click/Rename)
It then becomes "AutoRun.bak"
Reboot and check if fixed.

You can delete the file later if all is well.
If that was the problem you will have to have your system checked for malware.

I have tried to uninstall to drives and reinstal them. I have physicly removed the drives and tried them in another pc and they are ok. I have checked my bios and they are shown correctly. In device manager they are listed correctly without any problems. In device manager CD ROM properties settings the drives removable check box is grayed out but not checked.

When I insert a cd the drive reads the disk and shows it as an empty disk if i click on the drive the same thing happens.

My wife just recently got a flash-based MP3 player that can just plug in like a flash drive. She also has her existing flash drive. When both devices are plugged into our Win2k system, they both show up as "Removable Drive" just with differing drive letters.

She's already labeled the flash drive with a unique name (My Computer-->Right clicked on the drive-->Properties-->Typed in "MyStuff" as the label-->OK), and the label stays (even after she unplugs/replugs the drive), but Windows won't display the label, it just says "Removable Drive". This gets awfully confusing when both the flash drive and MP3 player are plugged in and they both are shown as "Removable Drive"!!

How do I get the label(s) to show for these devices?

A:Labels for removable (flash) drives

Go to Device Manager, and assign each of the drives a unique drive letter. When you plug them in, they'll always be assigned that drive letter. This should help you tell them apart. FWIW, when I label my FLASH drives, they show up in My Computer with the volume name, just like any other drive.

Wondering if any experts on dual-booting the Optiplex might be able to offer some suggestions - I have both the Optiplex 7010 and 3020 models with removable drives in caddies in my computer labs.  What I need to do is dual-boot between the internal hard drive and a hard drive in the removable caddy.  The issue is that I need the hard drive in the removable caddy to be the DEFAULT drive when it is present.  In other words, I want the computer to automatically boot to whatever drive is in the caddy - if there is no hard drive in the caddy, I want it to boot to the internal drive.
On the 7010 Optiplex - this worked exactly as expected - I set the removable drive as the first bootable device in the BIOS, and everything works great.  If the removable drive is present in the caddy it is the default drive.  When removed, the computer boots to the internal drive.
On the 3020, I can't get it to work. The computer will boot ONCE to the drive in the caddy, but if the drive is removed and then reinserted, the computer boots to the internal drive. I've used the exact same process and settings on the 3020 as I did on the 7010 but every time the removable drive is removed, the internal drive gets set as the default.  I need the 3020 to boot to whatever drive is in the caddy - any ideas on how I can accomplish this?  Updating the BIOS didn't help.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

This is another minor annoyance. When I insert any removable drive (USB, SD cards, etc) the device shows up twice in Explorer. Once under "This PC" tree and the other as a device. See attached pic (USB Drive H):

Cool article, but there's an easier way that does not disable Shell Hardware Detection or AutoPlay!.

When using removable media, instead of simply yanking the device out (as most people do), use the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the Taskbar Notification area:

That way, you won't screwup the filesystem of the device, and you'll never see the "Scan and Fix" prompt...

Incorrect function" I put my flash card in and the computer sees it and recognizes it as such but won't let me access it. Same with any CDs or DVDs I put in my drives. I can't install new programs with a cd because it is not accessible. (I install new software by downloading from the proper website) When I plug in my Fuji camera to download pictures to the pc, it recognizes the camera and gives it a drive but I can't download the pictures. My A:/ drive is not accessible. What is happening? I am running XP w/ SP2. My DVD drive is SONY CD-RW CRX175A. My DVD is generic DVDRom 12X. I have tried a system restore with no success. I have tried to update everything and nothing! I have disconnected, unplugged and tried reinstalling EVERYTHING without success. Please help!!

If you plug in a USB memory stick, or other removable drive, XP automatically opens an explorer window to show you what's on the drive.

How can I STOP this from happening.

We are using our memory sticks as a USB key (login) for software and don't want that window to appear forcing the user to close it.

ps Yes, we've worked out a way of securing the file and preventing it from being useful if copied to another stick, so duplicating keys is not an issue.

We just don't want that explorer window to pop up when the computer sees the USB memory stick!

I would think you would have to edit the computer options, I don't think there is anything you can do to the USB key to change this.

The DVD drives in my machine do not show up in the removable devices section of Explorer under Computer. They are listed under the hard drives section and there is no removable devices section shown.
Some of my applications cannot detect that there is a DVD drive attached to the system because of this.
As an related problem, USB devices do not show as removable storage also.
I've tried re-installing the devices for the DVD drives but no change to the situation.
Can anyone suggest a solution? The problem has persisted since I did a clean install of Win 7 Pro.

Hi Steve and welcome
This might be as simple as a driver. Can you go into device manager (type device manager is search) and check the dvd drive tab. Is your device listed? does it have a yellow explanation on top?

Hi Folks,
Wife's computer [HP Desktop running XP Media Center] - she went to plug in an SD card from her camera and said somethings gone. Windows Explorer is only showing drives C: (main), D: (recovery), and E: (CD/DVD). All of the other drives F: - K: are gone. These drives were a varity of RMS slots and a couple of extra USB ports. Not sure what happened, but possible that the eject drive button from the task tray was used improperly, but still clueless on the steps needed to diagnois and fix the bloody thing.

Any help appreciated! TIA.

Steve

A:Missing Removable Media Drives F: - K:

A simple reboot may cause the system to re-detect them.

Have you checked device manager for any question marks, exclamation points, unknown devices?

So I basically explained what I wanted to do with the title: I want to add desktop icons of removable drives whenever I insert a flashdrive/memorystick/or some other kind of drive. I also want it to disappear once that drive is removed.

This is probably the one feature I want from Macs that Vista doesn't have. The dock is the second, although that's an easy fix with so many dock programs around.

So am I asking for too much with this small feature? Already I have shortcuts of the drive icons on my desktop, but it looks a bit ugly, especially when an icon has a question mark sign on it. And I'm trying to keep my desktop as clean as possible. Last, I'd prefer that the program is free. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving Day.

A:add desktop icons of removable drives

I don't think you can do that.

Hi,

I have a Compaq V4310NR with XP Home. Recently, it stopped reading any removable drive such as USB Flash or via the 9-in-1 card reader for SD cards. Once inserted, the drive is shown, but when you double-click it says "disk in drive d is not formatted would u like to format it now?"

And the thing is that these are perfectly fine in other computers. I've tested repeatedly with USB and SD card. Also, if the card is in camera which is then attached via USB, it can usually see the data (not tested in all configs).

Is this work of some virus, or some settings gone bad? Please help, and thanks in advance...

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the ... Read more

My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller.
I still had a movie to burn with ConvertX, but when I started it, came back saying no writer found, so I went to "My Computer" and sure enough it is not there. Tried system restore and the only restore point was from today when I did the uninstall with Revo, so I tried that and after System Restore went through (shutdown & restart) it came back saying system cannot be restored, no changes made.
What can I do to get my Sony DVD RW back?

Thank you,

Hi,

I have several Dell desktops (745, 755, GX260, T5500, Etc) all Win7 and Server 2008, that have factory hard drives; I want to make them removable drives. In the past

I have special ordered desktops with T-7 units from Dell.

Now, I need to make about 20 desktops removable drive desktops, any ideas, Dell says I can't really add a Dell sponsored caddy / cage.

My other issue is I have to add whole disk encryption to it, TrueCrypt is perfect.

I also have to add USB tape backup unit. Q: does anyone have an USB portable tape backup unit and encrypting the hard drive and tape?

Thanks

Mn19~

I'm using a Lenovo PC (Windows 8.1) with a 64GB eMMC. I use Micro SD and USB 3.0 for the vast majority of my storage. Whenever I want to delete a file on these drives the usual delete confirmation dialog appears. I seem to recall that on Windows 98 and XP this was not the case. Is there a way around this in Windows 8.1, perhaps by mounting the drives? I delete dozens of files a day and this confirmation dialog is an annoyance to say the least.

TIA.

A:How Do I Disable Delete Confirmation on Removable Drives?

The whole purpose of a confirmation is to make sure that you are not deleting the wrong file. Nothing has changed on Trash for this feature. It will always be the same way since Windows 95.

I have the setting as shown in the tutorial:

Drives - Hide or Show Empty Drives in Computer Folder

To not show empty removable drives.

In My Computer the empty removable drives are visible but grayed out. I'd rather not see them at all if they are empty. The only empty drive I want visible in the DVD drive.

Is there a way to fix it? In Vista it works correctly but W7 it wants to show them grayed.

A:Empty Removable Drives showing grayed out

Hmm, grayed out would seem to indicated that it is showing the empty drive letters for a memory card reader instead of hiding them. You might try one of the other options in the tutorial to hide them to see if it may work better.
