DVD Drive won't open (Locked)

Q: DVD Drive won't open (Locked)

Hi guys. I have 2 PC's. PC1 has 2 DVD Drives & PC2 has 1 DVD Drive. PC2's DVD will not open for me, the light flashes for a bit, but then nothing. I took a DVD Drive from PC1 & put it into PC2; same issue with that Drive which makes me think it's not a Drive issue in itself. Here's the really weird part. I swapped the Drives back & now a previously good Drive from PC1 exhibits the same symptoms as the first Drive from PC2. I have tried removing software and upper/lower filters, checking cables, swapping power plugs, firmware upgrades, Bios upgrades, etc. I tried all the stuff I read to try from other forums with 'not opening drives'. The second Drive from PC1 (which never saw PC2 opens BUT spits disks out after closing). The only clue I have so far is from IsoBuster which told me that 'another application has locked the drive (possibly UDF packet software like InCD, etc)' pressing OK told me that it could force open the drive (I smiled). But it wasn't to be. 'Unexpected error and Retry exhausted''Device reported Error code : 04/53/00'. The only thing I can think of is when I had to manually power-down PC2 because it froze during a game; with the game DVD inside, & that somehow the game has locked the Drive & locks any other Drives connected to that hardware location on the primary IDE. I need HELP PLEASE. Perhaps a groovy little program that will unlock the Drives or a manual edit. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: DVD Drive won't open (Locked)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I encrypted a file using my other computer running Windows 7 and I just transfered it over. I try to open it, (I used TrueCrypt), and only on my laptop does it fail to open the file. I've tried opening it with TrueCrypt over and over but it doesn't register it.

I really need this file open or else I can't use the stuff in it for work. Can someone please help?

Used Lenovo OS recovery DVD's for Win8.1 to setup machine (old system crashed and couldn't be recovered) back to factory default. Once in Windows, used the Recovery tool (Control Panel -> Recovery) to create a recovery USB drive. Followed instructions from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht080887 and created a recovery USB drive. I then wanted to test this drive before I loaded all my applications and again followed the instructions in that article to "reset pc" using the USB drive. It appeared to reset the pc (I watched it go from 0% up to just about 100%) and then it rebooted. After reboot, it went right back into the USB recovery drive. I removed the USB drive and rebooted it again, and got a "no operating system..." error. When I insert the USB recovery drive back in and use the utility, it tells me the drive is locked. This tells me it didn't "reset pc" like it was supposed to do, but I followed everything to a "t". Any suggestions?

I have a Toshiba Tecra A11-17H - PTSE0E 03402EFR
Operating system is Windows 7 64bit

Here is my problem :
I locked files (image, text) with fingerprint, while I was running Windows XP Professional.

I copied my files without unlocked on external hard drive, then uninstalled XP and installed Windows 7.
After the reinstallation, the fingerprint reader has stopped working.
I had to download the drivers and software from the Toshiba website.

I then put my transferred to the external hard drive on the computer but now it is unable to open the file.
Extension has been changed (automatically), a fpl . came to added after the original extension .

I tried deleted fpl but nothing happens.
When I do right click, I do not have the option "unlock?, but rather "to protect the file".

I understand (reading the forum) that fingerprint technology TPM consists of a chip containing a decryption key unique to the computer.
Theoretically, it would be possible to unlock my files, since it is the same computer ...

Help me please ....

A:Cannot open locked files using fingerprint on Tecra A11-17H

Please read this:
[Cannot access fingerprint-protected files after recovery|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9802O50000R01.htm]

A user cannot access his fingerprint protected files when backing up these files on external storage like e.g. a network drive and performing a recovery or reinstallation of the operating system on the machine where the files were protected.

The AuthenTec fingerprint software provides a feature called "protecting files/folders" which gives the user the ability to protect files regardless if stored locally, on external media (USB flash memory) or network storage with either a password or the stored fingerprints. After protecting the files, they cannot be moved/copied/deleted anymore until the user unprotects them.

The root cause of the above mentioned scenario is because of the fact that the "Authentec" fingerprint software is creating a connection between the installed fingerprint hardware and the filesystem on the HDD which acts like a key. This connection is removed after formatting or deleting the harddisk of the computer. Without this connection, the files cannot be accessed anymore and the user will not be able to unprotect them since there is no "key" which could unlock the file-protection.

To prevent data loss caused by such scenario, *the user needs to unprotect the files before storing the files on external media* for backup/storage purposes and afterwards re... Read more

My brother was attempting to clean up my lap top when suddenly everything was gone. We did the system restore and the message said it was successful and all files had been restored. However, when we restarted the computer my original desktop would flash on for just a second then another desktop appears with just a few of the icons I had on the original. When we go to the desktop there is a zipped file there containing 34 files that I think is my original desktop. It won't unzip for me to see. Please, can anyone help??? I am so hoping that I haven't lost everything. Everything still works, internet, etc. just mostly everything, including all favorite places are gone. I can reset them all again but hate to have to do it if they are still there. Earlier in the day he installed ccleaner which is still there.

i have an external HDD that is locked by bitlocker and won`t open
i didn`t lock it i just went on section that asks for password and cancel the process and my HDD worked just fine but after i disconnected it and connect again it has been locked and when i try to open it says :

Bitlocker (D:)
the bitlocker encryption in this drive isn`t compatible with your version of windows. try opening the drive using a newer version of vindows.

i`m pretty sure it didn`t encrypt my drive cuz encryptions take time and my drive is 1 TB
i`m using windows 8.1 and tried 8 & 7 ...even XP :(
i have really important stuff in it
plz tell me what to do :'(

A:Unable to open external HDD that is locked by bitlocker

Farid Rahimi,
If you haven?t already, remove the drive from whatever port you have it plugged into and try another port.
Another thing you can check is to see if there are any new updates available for your BIOS.
Take a look at any changes that it might list and if there have been any changes to the TPM, go ahead and run that update.
You?ll also want to make sure that your system settings are all correct for the port you?re using.
Hope this helps!

I don't know if this is a Windows issue or just an issue with my software but I was using Corel Paint shop pro x6 and I'm not sure what I did but after opening files or using the save to option several times, all of a sudden the window started opening full screen and there doesn't seem to be any way to minimize it.
I tried to see if I could at least drag it some place but it won't move. I tried going to every side and corner to see if I could resize it that way but nothing happens. This is the only program that opens my folders in full screen so perhaps it has nothing to do with Windows but I'm desperate for some help on how I can get my folders to open in a small screen where you can move them over or out of the way of something you might be looking at.

A:open or save to folders locked into full screen

Hello Sheryl,

Is this window a modern app screen by chance?

Does it have the usual "restore down" button (middle one) at the top right corner?

As a test, press the F11 key to see if can toggle on/off full screen like it does in explorer and IE.

If that doesn't help, then please post a screenshot showing this to see if anything may stand out.

I just got a new/used Acer Aspire One laptop. The OS on the Acer and my home computer (a Gateway laptop) is Win 7 Home 32 bit. A Cruzer 4gb USB flash drive came with the Acer laptop.
The USB flash drive has been split up. 3.73gb's is on the original (drive letter G) and 97meg's is on a virtual drive (drive letter F). According to Win 7 computer management. The virtual drive on the USB stick is locked. Every attempt to dump the virtual drive and make the hole USB flash drive 4gb's with 1 drive letter have hit a dead end. I can reformat the 3.73gb on the original drive letter G but the virtual drive F remains read only. And I don't need the prog stored there anyways.

Hi all, so here's an interesting problem. A friend of mine managed to use the cacls administrative tool to lock himself out of his c drive, which windows was unfortunately installed on. He "had" two admin accounts, one TestAdmin, one his name. He used cacls to lock the TestAdmin account out of c drive access, or so he thought. Apparently he managed to lock himself completely out of c drive, and now his computer won't boot. The first problem he encounters is that it asks what to boot from, and when he selects the hard drive it seems to boot normally. Then it comes up with "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK". After this it just tries to boot up again, and encounters the same problems.

Is it possible to fix this without completely deleting the My Documents folder, because there is information that he needs to use next Saturday.

He has the Windows install disk if needed.

After thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.

I have put another copy of XP onto my D:\ drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C:\ drive which is a lot of bother.

I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.

Hi JimmySpace There's a couple of ways to go about this issue, which are listed in the article below:http://www.thewindowsclub.com/the-drive-where-windows-is-installed-is-lockedYou can start with a CHKDSK /R, and then we'll go from there, alright?Check Disk (chkdsk)Follow the instructions below to run a CHKDSK scan on your Windows partition; On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as AdministratorOn Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin); On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);Enter the command chkdsk /r (there's a space between "chkdsk" and "/r") and press on Enter;A message will be returned, stating that the drive cannot be locked because it's already in use, and you'll be asked if you want to schedule the scan for the next restart. Enter y and press on Enter;Restart your computer, and the chkdsk scan will be launched automatically;WARNING: Depending on your hard drive (specs, free space, fragmentation, etc.) this scan can be relatively long to complete. Give it all the time it needs to finish. Do not interrupt it for any reason there is, or you might be damaging your drive in the process and make your Windows unbootable. It's suggested to let this scan run overnight or when you leave the house for a few hours (when you g... Read more

As a beginning user of Windows 8 Pro I still have my old XP installation on a separate hard disk. I tried to keep both systems in the same machine by dual-boot setup. However soon Windows 8 refused too boot with error smthg like 'Locked drive'. I just guess that maybe the previous XP session ran filecheck or smthing and now Win 8 notices unexpected tampering and security kicks in. Now I must reinstall Windows 8?

I learned that Win 8 has new advanced security measures that might be the the factor. Is there any means to loosen the security or prevent XP touching the Win 8 drive? Before I have happily multibooted 2 different Windowses and Linux installation in the same machine , all using common drives...

Hi, not sure how I've done it but I was trying to share my c: drive with another laptop in the house and somehow I've managed to change the permissions so that the c: drive is read only to all users including admins!

I'm an administrator user but can't access the drive. I've activated the Vista Administrator user but nor can that.

I've done some googling and I can get an elevated cmd prompt by safe boot with command prompt and run the secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose command but that hasn't sorted it

So, I'm now at a loss as to how to reset the permissions back so I can fully access it. My next option I think is to remove the hdd and put it in a USB caddy, and then recover all the user data onto a new hdd with a fresh Vista install on.

..unless anyone knows another way round the problem?

Referred from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/333383/experiencing-rundll-error-windows-on-start-up/ ~ OBThis all started when my BF clicked on a fake virus alert. He scanned the computer right away with MBAM and caught various things, but even when we rebooted certain programs couldn't start up. Firefox was fixed with help from the apartment complex's service provider, but SAS couldn't get Updates and I've had to reinstall AVG Free Ed. I've also reinstalled IE8 and Yahoo IM10 which were outdated and had start up and log in problems because of the infection. Uniblue Registry Booster 2010 does not seem to have any problems starting and functioning.Since then I've caught a few things with MBAM, SAS and AVG but the system is definitely not clean yet. I still get redirects and trojans or roguewares pop up from time to time that are caught by AVG (9 FREE EDITION).While trying to get rid of the RUNDLL error windows with Moderator boopme, I discovered I could not access the Properties button or Right-Click Properties for Network Connections. A Network Connections window pops up that says unexpected error occurred. I was instructed to post here using 6-9 of the Preperation Guide.I tried to make a GMER log but the first time through AVG prevented it from going past a certain point. After disabling AVG temporarily it finished quickley but froze before I could save the log and while I was trying to enable the AVG9 Resident Sheild. The third scan took much longer than t... Linux recognizes the drive and all files are still present. the drive is fully functional.

Hello, everytime I start my laptop it shows an all black screen with the hard drive model and asks for my password. I know the password and enter it this is no problem but how can I get it to stop asking me for a password everytime I start the laptop? I went into BIOS and it does not let me highlight the hdd password to change or delete it, so I am guessing it is not in bios. Laptop works fine no problems at all just don't want to have to keep entering the pw every time I turn it on. Not sure if it matters but I am using windows 7 ultimate and it's a Gateway ID49c laptop. Thanks

A:Hard Drive locked

it does not let me highlight the hdd password to change or delete it

Possible reason, there may be 2 different bios accounts\passwords, one for general users (with restrictions) and one for admin (with access to all settings).

My computer was shut down when the electricity went out a few nights ago. As the computer booted up in the morning, chkdsk ran. Windows Vista opened. I eventually discovered that "Access is denied" on one hard drive. I am, however, able to access the drive in Safe Mode.

How do I achieve access?

Thank you,

Jill Siegel

A:hard drive locked

Is the drive the one with the operating system on it - or is it one used for storage?
If storage, it's a simple matter to take ownership of the contents of the drive:

Taking Ownership - Vista:
Right click on the folder/drive that you want to take ownership of and select Properties
Click on the Security tab, then on the Advanced button
Then on the Owner tab, then on the Edit button
Click once on your account name, then put a checkmark in the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" Then click on OK.
Click OK on the warning dialog about reopening, then click on OK 2 more times to exit the dialog.

my hard drive was remotely locked.i cannot use recovery disks that i paid for from gateway.how do i unlock or should i get a new copy of win 7 to reinstall.? gateway nv53a 3ghz processor 4gb ram. i am using ubuntu which by the way is excellent.

A:hard drive locked

How was the hard drive locked? Knowing that is likely the key to unlocking it.

If you use an unlocked hard drive you should be able to use your Recovery disks. A Windows 7 installation DVD would find your current hard drive to be just as locked as anything else does.

I don't understand how this is a Web & Email issue, but don't know which forum would be "correct."

Yesterday I was working on some stuff on my computer and left it when my door rang. When I came back the computer was on but no matter how many times I tried to move the mouse or press keyboard shortcuts Windows wouldn't come back on. So I manually powered down, and then it got worse. It wouldn't repair manually or from the Windows disk. I tried all kinds of stuff. I tried a refresh install but I got this

"The drive where Windows is installed is locked"
Then this morning when I went back to back to turn it on and trouble shot. All I got was a black screen. No NVIDIA window or anything.

Please help!

A:Windows 8 drive locked?

Hardware problem??? Mobo??? Hard Drive??? Are your files backed up off computer? If yes, try reinstalling with the Win8 DVD. Doesn't sound promising though. Don't try if you are afraid of losing anything on your computer. Note that your drive might not be bad. Thus, file recovery might be possible via another computer or your computer if repaired.
