Major Freezing and Black Screen Issues

Q: Major Freezing and Black Screen Issues

Hi guys,

I have just installed Windows 7 and I'm having some major trouble with my graphics card. I had Vista installed, and just got my laptop from back from Dell after some repairs for faulty motherboard/GPU. I have wiped my hard drive and started fresh by installing Windows 7 Build 7100. All seemed good when I first opened it up, everything was nice but I noticed I only had Vista Basic color scheme. I had a look in device manager and under display adaptor it had Standard VGA adaptor listed.

I then installed my nVidia driver number 185.85 and upon restart I got a black screen after welcome screen. I then rebooted and all seemed fine. After around 15-20 seconds of use windows would lock up for a minute or so, then flash a BSOD and then reboot. I figured it was a driver issue, so I jumped on and downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card (GeForce 8400M GS) which was 186.03. This had the exact same result. Random shutdowns and failing to boot, alot of freezing when I could boot.

I have found if I go into device manager and disable it, I can run windows 7 fine but can't use screen savers or basically anything that needs graphics. Any help would be great as I woul love to keep using Windows 7. Cheers guys.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I had a check on the Dell website to see what drivers they had to offer and the one they have on there is for vista 32 bit and its like version 101...way outdated. Any advice of things to try would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Alright, Here's some system specs for you to stew over while I describe the problem:

AMD Athlon 64 2800+
Rosewill GeForce FX5200 128MB
Gigabyte (Unknown 64bit compatible nForce3) Motherboard
512MB Rosewill PC3200 DDR RAM
Rosewill 52x32x52x16 DVD/CDRW Drive (Important, as you will see)

I'm having major problems with this machine when it comes to games that run in full screen. The two games I've had problems with so far are Civilization III and Battle for Middle Earth. Sid Meier's Pirates! runs fine (Which puzzles me to no end). The games that don't run will show the image that signifies their loading (The non-full screen image), but then the computer will just lock up. The CD Drive will spin a bit, then stop, then spin a bit, then stop, then spin a bit, then stop, before the machine freezes, and a reboot is required.

I've replaced every driver (Except the nForce3 one for the board, I didn't get to that yet) and I flashed the CD Drive's Firmware as well. I probably tried 4 driver sets for the graphics card, and it's still having the problem.

Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

A:Major Freezing Issues

Try the new motherboard drivers first, it could be some weird IDE bug or something, and getting new drivers couldn't hurt.

Does Pirates require the CD in the drive, and if it does, does it spin up before the game starts?

Hi everyone,

This problem is sort of related to my desire and inability to play games, but I guess you'd call it a general performance issue so I'll post it here, feel free to move it if it is in the incorrect forum.

Anyway, a few days ago, after reading many reviews saying that the Win7 RC was fairly stable, I decided to make the jump from XP 32-bit to Win7 64-bit.

Upon installing, I noticed that at random times my whole system would freeze, and would require a hard reset. I wouldn't get any sound, no lagging beforehand, it would just stop dead and not do anything. Hard resetting was the only way back in. Sometimes these freezes would happen after 2 minutes, sometimes after 20 minutes, sometimes after an hour. One thing was clear however, it happened almost instantly when I tried to play games.

I have tested games like Far Cry 2 (ran fine for about an hour, didn't freeze, I just stopped playing), Diablo 2 (ran fine again, no freeze), Half-Life 2 (played it for about an hour total, at which point it froze and needed resetting 3 times), and finally, World of Warcraft. WoW was, and still is, the absolute worst of all.
I start WoW, skip past the intro cinematic and with a second of the login screen showing up, there is a scratchy singular beep and it freezes. The beep comes from the speakers, not the PC, if that makes any difference.

My PC's hardware setup is as follows:

OS: Windows 7 64-bit RC Build 7100
Motherboard: MSI K8N-Neo4 Platinum PCB 1.0
CPU: AMD Athlon 64... Read more

A:Major Freezing Issues

I am also investihgating a problem which could well be related.
If I used IE 32Bit, I was totally unable to use any other programs until I closed IE again. Sometimes the whole OS would freeze. My compromise, for the moment, was to use IE 64Bit. Oddly, although this imports all the settings from the 32Bit version, my problem vanished. Should you decide to follow this course, it is necessary to install the 64Bit Java.

Hi, Does anyone else get this issue? I don't think this is the same screen flicker that is experienced by the few others due to auto brightness problems...  It's flickering black and then the whole thing turns unresponsive after a while...and although the video shows it happening during a low light environment, i have had this encounter during a brightly lit area as well... Any thoughts?? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwDCKNxZ1zwXTDFqejJ6aXNzM0k/edit?usp=sharing I've posted a copy of what really happens on google drive. Is this a case of motherboard problems? A:Yoga 2 Pro Major Screen Flicker Followed by Black out

Can you go to Intel graphics control panel, press big power button, and then go to "on battery" tab. Is "Panel self refresh" option enabled? If it is then disable it. This option makes the panel consume less power, gives better battery life, but it has exact symptoms every now and then. If you have stock Yoga graphics driver installed then download the newest one from Intel, install it and disable this option. To install the new driver you'll have to uninstall the old one, otherwise it won't allow you to install the new one. To uninstall it go to Device manager, display driver properties, uninstall driver button. If this doesn't work then I wouldn't know, probably is a hardware issue and better to try to get a replacement.

Hi,

I wanted to upgrade from Vista to 7, but I didn't want all of my programs to save. I bought an external HDD, and put all of my games and programs which I didn't want to get lost into the HDD. Then, I reinstalled Vista, so I had no data on my PC, but only on my external HDD.

After that, I installed Windows 7. Everything went well, until I had to boot my PC. It said it was loading windows (7), and than the screen turned black, and I haven't seen nothing exept of the mouse curser.

What could the problem be and how could I fix it?
Thanks.

Oh another thing:
I think the internet drivers are lost too. How can I reinstall them to have my web working?

A:Major problem with Windows 7-Black screen

Try this. Try to Boot up from the DVD, and do a clean install. Hopefully, you will get back everything that you lost. This time, disconnect everything but the mouse, monitor and keyboard. You can also try from safe mode and see what happens.

I have been having this problem for 6 months now and it's making me go insane. The problem is while im playing ingame my screen will go completely black all i can see are faint outlines of things then it will flicker back to normal then back to completely black again. This will go on for 15 minutes or so before it finally stops and it was happening once a day. Since then things have gotten worse, alot worse, Now when it goes black it will not even flicker back to normal it will stay completely black for about an hour or more or until i quit the game. It's so frustrating because I can forget about grouping or raiding at all because well, if the screen goes black im SOL. This is happening in WoW, EQ2 and WC3. I'm at the end of my pitiful rope please get me some help, if you can't help refer me to more tech forums where i can post my problem.

Stuff you might wanna know: I have the latest drivers for my video card (NVidia 6600 GT)I have the latest version of Directx(9.0c)I don't believe there is any overheating going on as i have a box fan on high sitting infront of the open case and there is an air condition directly behind the fan. Also don't think it has anything to do with sound as I've disabled sound in all those programs and the problem still persists. This is all I can think of right now. Thank you for your time.

I've been working on this for days now, reading alot on different forums and Microsoft support page about reinstalling windows because that's the point where I think I am. Think, don't know.

I cannot get past the BCOD. I've had a black screen too multiple times. No windows. Can't even get to safe mode.

I have an HP p6310y. OS is windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

I think the first black screen error message I got was something like:
Something is preventing windows from opening properly...

Sorry, I didn't get a picture of that one. Didn't think it was going to be a major issue at the time. I chose the option to open normally and that didn't work - kept getting that same white type on black screen error message. So then I tried the other option, which was to start windows repair. After that I got another error message:
Could not solve the problem. Hit OK to shut down the computer.

When I rebooted I now got the message:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Start Up Repair can help diagnose the problem.

I launched the repair and got a message saying it was unable to repair (files? Sorry, didn't write this one down)

I restarted and got the BSOD with HP logo that gave me 4 options:
F10=setup, ESC=boot menu, F11=system recovery, F9=Diagnostic

I pressed F9 for diagnostic and it told me it couldn't repair the file. I restarted, go... Read more

Hi,

You could try one of the following, or both;

Disable startup processes
Go to Start > Search.
Type "msconfig" > hit ENTER.
Go to Startup-tab > Disable all items in this list.
Apply > OK.
Reboot > Try normal bootup.

Create a new user account
Logon to Safemode (Hit F8 during startup).
Create a new user account.
Boot up machine as normal > Try to logon to that user account.

If you've done before, you can have a look through the Eventlog on the machine while in Safemode, and see if you can find any faults around the time that you tried to boot Normally, and see if any faults are reoccuring. Feel free to export the eventlog and attach as a .txt here for us to view aswell.

To open the eventlog;
Go to Start > Search.
Type "eventwvr.msc" > Hit ENTER.
Actions > Save log to/export log to.

HI,
I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Thanks

Kim

Hi, I am having several problems with my computer, wondering if I am infected with something? First noticed the computer running slowly. Then began freezing all the time. Then noticed that when I switch to a new internet page at times I notice a small black screen that will pop-up or flash on the page, but only for a second...almost like you'd get on a "run command" type scrren, if that makes sense. Also, I keep getting a security options failure. It seems this only comes after the computer freezes and I try to hit alt, control, delete to bring up task manager. I have tried to run Norton Anti-virus and spybot. I've used CCleaner to remove unnecessary files/clean. The virus software finds nothing unusual (usually some cookies with tracking, but no virus. A:freezing and then came black screen

This can be caused by a number of things.
The first thing to do is to find out if it is hardware or software related.
The best way to do this is to boot into the bios and leave it there for a bit.
If the problem arises when let in the bios screen then you know it is hardware.

Hello, over the last week to week and a half my computer has been getting worse and worse. I think its triggered by right clicking objects although I dont think thats entirely whats causing the problem. The screen will freeze and then the monitor will turn black and the computer will have to be restarted. The problem can occur as frequently as 3 times in 10 minutes currently. I have the hp m8100n with vista home pro. I absolutely hate both.

I don't know what the hell is going on but here's what's happening:

Crashes and blue screens with the 0x00000024, 0x0000008E and a myriad of others.

If I use any combination of windows media center and anything else, it goes nuts, freezes and that whole memory dump thing starts.

Often, It freezes and just does nothing.

Every time, I shut down and reboot. Sometimes it would act normal thereafter and finally, now, it seems like it tries to reboot but the CPU does a short beep followed by a long beep every 2 seconds.

I am ready to throw this thing out the window. It all seemed to have started when I downloaded the latest version of iTunes/Quicktime. I have unintalled, reinstalled, uninstalled again, did system recovery, did windows updates, updated drivers... I GIVE UP!!

Can someone PLEASE help me through this?

Hi. . .

A bugcheck of 0x24 = NTFS file corruption - See if you can boot into SAFEMODE and run chkdsk /f from an elevated command prompt:
START | type cmd.exe into start search box | right-click on cmd.exe and select run as admin. Then type:

chkdsk /f

A bugcheck of 0x8e = a kernel mode application generated an exception. If the 1st parm inside the partenthesis is 0xc0000005 then it tells us a memory violation occurred. Run memtest86+ - click on the link below in my sig area. You will need to make an ISO and boot-up with the resulting DVD/CD.

I would run the memory dumps, but with the wide variety of bugchecks (STOP error codes) that you mentioned in addition to the beeping, this appears to be a hardware issue at this time and the dumps would probably not contain any helpful information.

I then started experimenting with Prime95 torture test, Memtest86+, PassMark's Burn-In Test and Windows Memory Diagnostic with the following results:

Memtest86+ completed one pass ok. Have not yet left it running for longer.

Prime95 runs overnight with no errors when testing large FFT's so far. It produces the black screen crash overnight on small FFT testing but was running ok for over 2 hours to start with.

PassMark Burn-In shareware only runs for 15mins before stopping. Occasionally this crashes or freezes.

WMD always fails on the Stride6 test. If I vary the RAM (original 512MB, new 1GB, or total 1.5GB) it will fail at diffent points during Stride6. Only once did it complete Stride6 (when running with 512MB RAM) but then failed on the 2nd pass. Reading other forums on Stride6 failures makes me think it could be a PSU, CPU or mobo issue.

Took the case off my PSU last night and noticed some corrosion and leakage from a capacitor. Bought and installe... Read more

Hey,

My laptop (Asus A52F) starting acting up about a week ago. It seems to be seizing and then black-screening if I have it do anything more than one small task. For example it often freezes up during scans, when I plug in a hard drive or if I try to download absolutely anything and then I have to force shut down by holding the power button.
I've tried running a few different virus/malware scans (Super Anti Spyware, Ad-aware and Malware Bytes) and they found a couple little things but the compuet has still been acting up.
I've tried keeping an eye on the task manager while trying anything that usually freezes the computer and I'm seeing any jumps in the CPU. I've attempted to do a system restore as well but there is no restore point to use.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be very thankful.
Cheers.

So whenever I start up my hp pavilion g6 the screen stays black and I get the blink code on the caps lock key, I have researched this and found out that it was either a board system failure or a cpu not functional.  I have reseated my memory modules to see if that would work, it didnt. I have tried starting up from bios menu and running the memory and hard drive test,  but everytime this happens my computer freezes and I have to restart because it never unfreezes. This happens every single time I try to launch in safe mode or repair mode and I cant do anything about it. I have attempted to system restore off of repair mode but everytime I get close to it an error pops up asking to disable drivers and how it has been canceled to prevent damage to my computer. I cannot do anything about fixing the first problem because the freezing problem doesnt allow me. I have also tried running the diagnostics off of the bios but again the freezing thing stops it. Someone please help

A:Major issues Slow/Crashing/Blue Screen - Hard Drive very noisy

Hi

Please follow the below steps.

1 ) Replace the SATA data cable of the hard disk. Also re-seat the power connector.

2 ) Remove the side cover and identify the brand of your hard disk. Then run the manufacturer's diagnostic test by downloading the appropriate tool.

For Seagate , Samsung and Maxtore drives , use Seatool for DOS :

 http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Run long test with it.

For Western digital drive , use WD diagnostics : https://www.box.com/shared/gl0fifqgj4

Run an Extended test with it. If you are having difficulty running the DOS based tool, use the Windows version instead.

 http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=605&sid=3&lang=en

For Hitachi drives , use Drive Fitness Test : http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v416_b00.iso

For other brands like Toshiba and HGST, there are no proper tool available. HGST provide a tool named WinDFT but that only works with slave drives. So test them using seatool for DOS instead.

If you are unsure about how to burn the downloaded ISO image to a CD, refer the below guide.

Let me know your findings after running the test.

I'm using an HP ENVY TS 17-J130US NB PC on Windows 10 and have been experiencing this issue for the last several weeks.

I believe this occurred after one of the windows updates and the computer didn't shut down correctly. The next time I booted up the system, it basically froze. I've tried updating my graphics driver but am still experiencing these issues.

From time to time the system will freeze although I've been able to use it. But recently when it's about to freeze, my google chrome pages start to not load and my task bar reacts very slowly (opening task manager requires a lot of patience).

I'm not really sure where to start (originally, I thought it was an application like Skype because everytime I opened skype, it would freeze. I've uninstalled skype but still experience these issues).

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Firstly, I am a bit of a computerphobe, and will be lost on any major technical terms, so please bear with me...

I have a samsung R700 laptop, which decided this morning to die.

I had downloaded some films last night (which I have done many times with no problems previously), switched off the laptop (which rarely do - prefering instead to hibernate.)

When I switched it back on this morning, windows was carrying out about a million updates.

After around 10 minutes, the screen came on, and everything looked normal. I tried to open a document, but the laptop screen froze, and although the curser was there and moving, I was unable to close or open any other pages/applications.

After restarting a few times and having the same thing happen, I started in safemode, restored it back to last month, and tried again. In safemode I can scan (have used 3 virus scanners which have been reccomended) but all results are clear. I can access the internet and all of my documents.

Restarted the machine after an hour switched off, and when booting up in normal mode, the home screen is just black. There is a white cursor which moves, but no taskbar or icons etc. Safe mode is still functional.

Any advice would be greatly received
Thanks in advance

Hi there. Recently my computer has been crashing an awful lot. I am just doing a task and, usually if it does, it will cut to black. The computer doesn't make any noise and I have to restart it. Sometimes it will freeze on the screen, once it actually cut to a completely white screen.

I always thought this was because I was using Google Chrome, it always seemed to be whilst that was loaded. However now its happening without that. Also, Firefox has become completely disabled, I click on the icon and nothing happens.

So, I have no idea why this is happening! It's very worrying as I am starting a new year at college next week. I have run several anti-virus checks, SpyBot checks, that sort of thing.

Please help! You might just save my life :/

My PC: ASUS P4 2.67G with 1G RAM. nVidia FX5200 AGP graphics card. Compro TV Tuner Card. XP Pro SP2.

Background:

Last Wednesday i installed a new TV Tuner Card. System was fine til about 3 days ago.

The problem:

The other day i was working on my PC and started smelling a mild electrical burning smell. The smell faded before i could figure out what it is, but came back again about 10 minutes later, followed closely by my system freezing and my monitor going black. I had to pull the power cord out the back of the system to turn it off.

After a few minutes i turned it back on again, and it appeared to boot fine. About 5 minutes after using it, the same thing happened again and the screen went black.

At this point, i figured the problem was most probably my AGP Card, so i got the case apart and took it out. After changing my monitor back to the on-board graphics (SiS chipset) the system appeared to boot fine again.

I used it for probably 10hrs of use after this and was thinking the problem was solved until this morning when i smelt that burning smell again, followed by the entire system freezing up. This time though, the screen did NOT go black, so i assume the onboard graphics are ok still.

At this point today i removed the TV Tuner card, rebooted and it loaded fine. I've not used it much this this happened.

I'm not sure what actually caused these problems, or if they are more serious than they appear.

I have looked at the AGP card & the TV Tu... Read more

Hello.

Recently my hp pavilion dm4 with switchable radeon 5000 series gpu has started acting funny.

It started months ago with poor performance in streaming videos online when the radeon was activated (dubbed "hi performance" in the OS.) This problem seemed to get better after reinstalling Windows back in March or April and using canned air to clean the innards of dust.

However, about a week ago while playing a game, the screen froze up and the computer rebooted. Upon restart, I got a message saying the video driver had crashed and was incompatible with the catalyst control center (not exactly sure what that is, but I installed several different driver versions to no avail.)
The computer continues crashing in this way, and often will show bars or a checker pattern on the screen before freezing. To make matters worse, a good percentage of the time, the screen will remain black upon startup. I've tried reinstalling the OS, and thankfully was able to boot in safe mode and back up all of the files I needed. I'm tempted to rule out malware as a cause due to the fact that the problem persists after reinstalling Windows.

I have used canned air to blow out all the fans, and have kept up with that habit pretty well since I started experiencing the slowness in video playback. I have not noticed any extreme overheating since I amended the initial problem earlier this year.

I'm ready to spend a small amount on fixing this, but I'm also pretty ready to upgrade... Read more

A:Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts.

Since you have done a (clean?) install of W7, that eliminates a lot of common problems. You can certainly stop thinking about viruses.

I have a couple of questions:
Where did you get the video driver(s) for the laptop when you did the reinstall? From the HP website only, or did you use the driver package from ATI? In the early days of dual graphics, the driver package was for both graphics chips and available only from the laptop manufacturer. Using the package from ATI would cause problems.
What happens if you disable the Hi-Performance graphics (in Device Manager)? Yes, your video performance will drop, but does that make the artifacts and freezing stop? This test is to try and isolate the problem graphics chip.
Does this behavior happen only on battery, or when the battery and power supply are both connected? What happens if you run on the power supply only and remove the battery completely?

1: When the screen shows a dark picture, then when I immediately switch back to a mostly white picture, it's far duller, and gradually (over the course of about 10 seconds), the white screen lightens more and more. I presume this is a battery saving feature. Can I disable it somehow? 2: Fan issues. Although the fan is quiet, I'd rather it be quieter still (or even silent). From previous experience, I know Lenovo tends to (heavily) err on the side of caution, but I'd rather be able to control the fan speeds more directly. Can I somehow half the fan speed or by some other arbitray amount? I'll keep an eye on temperatures, and I know all the risks.

My computer goes to a black screen even while I am working on it. Sometimes I can see the task bar, other times I can't. If I press the Power button, I can get the screen back and other times I can't so I have to power down by holding the Power button.

The system also shuts down on its own and then freezes on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen.

It is taking a long time for the computer to recognize anything I attach to the USB port.

Typing is very slow. I can type a URL and sit here and wait for the computer to finish my typing.

Windows was reinstalled, drivers updated; problem continues.

Any ideas what I can do?

Hello, over the last week to week and a half my computer has been getting worse and worse. I think its triggered by right clicking objects although I dont think thats entirely whats causing the problem. The screen will freeze and then the monitor will turn black and the computer will have to be restarted. The problem can occur as frequently as 3 times in 10 minutes currently. From the last day upon restarting some images have traces of minor pixelation errors, especially the windows icon as the PC is restarting and certain other random/minor images like above my back/forward, refresh and stop bottons in IE appear pixelated. Pixelation is now at high levels. As I'm posting this the problem occured and the screen went to a blue screen and mentioned something of proceeding with a physical memory dump and i restarted right away. These were caused by a bad driver (XenoVa64.sys?). Only way to be sure is to run driver verifier.

Beyond that, please run Verifier with these settings:

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

On my 2nd X1 extreme, the first was bricked. Everytime I boot into Windows, I experience a freeze and afterwards a black screen after some time (a minute or so). The laptop became unusable in windows. I have all the windows and vantage updates. I disabled all remote management stuff in the bios, disabled all secure boot settings, set some keyboard preferences (swap ctrl-fn etc.) and changed my graphics adapter to discrete only. I tried windows restore and after experiencing some blue screens, that helps a bit: still freezing, but not always. When I reapply all windows and vantage updates the laptop goes back to the same behaviour: boot into windows and after a minute or so a total freeze, followed by a black screen some 5 seconds later and still later fans spinning up to full speed. The updates include the latest graphics drivers, and I think the issue maybe has something to do with these graphic updates, but not sure. Some more observations:- The laptop never froze when Windows was applying updates. This takes longer then the usual time to have it freeze.- During updating the laptop, when I logged into windows, I sometimes got a windows notification saying the gfx driver failed to start and windows is reverting to a generic driver. I can't remember exactly, but I think the laptop never froze when using the generic one. I run the machine in dual boot and on linux the behaviour is absent. Let me start at the beginning of my current saga.

1. I received a blue screen of death about 4 months ago, the first time I had ever received one before. I restarted my computer and everything has been fine since then.

2. More often than not, I close my laptop at the end of the night and let it hibernate, only shutting it down every once in a while or restarting for windows update. Last night, I opened my laptop and had a few Chrome tabs open, as per usual, and everything was fine. Then for some reason everything froze. A freeze that locked everything up. I want to attribute this to windows update reminding me to restart after my previous update. I proceeded to force shut down and restart, then the black screen of death hit me. Just the mouse on the pitch black screen. Prior to the initial black screen of death, a popup occurred wanting me to end the process of "Windows Operating System" if memory serves. Since the computer is frozen, rarely can I click cancel on this. (Note: this popup will continue to happen later on)

3. I did a system restore to the first previous date at the F8 screen upon startup. It was successful but same result. I attempted further system restore points to the 3 other restore points but they all failed.

4. Several attempts to boot into Safe Mode were unsuccessful. Further attempts to boot into the regular startup resulted in being stuck at the Black Screen of Death.

5. Finally calling it quits for the night, I started back ... Read more

Hello,

Initially I had a problem with a BSOD for video scheduler, I installed the latest driver for my video card and I stopped receiving that BSOD. In its place, I began having a new BSOD stating, "An attempt to reset the video driver failed..." x0.00000016, so I followed the instructions on another link from this site and uninstalled the AMD driver and then used Driver Fusion to remove the remainder of it. Then I installed the latest driver.

Now I receive no BSOD, but while playing Company of Heroes, after a few minutes of play the screen froze and then went black, and the computer was completely unresponsive. I left it for a while to see if it would restart or show a BSOD, but nothing happened and I had to manually restart.

I have tried playing Diablo 3 to see if it was just that game, and it froze as well, but never went to a black screen, but the computer was unresponsive.

Not sure where to go from here. I have included everything SF Diagnostic generated.

Thank you for your time!

I just got my computer last week, and for some reason, screen goes black and nothing happens after i log off or switch user...then I have to restart computer to start it back up. Screen switch light still blue, so it doesnt sleep, and computer blue light stays on ( no blinking sleep indicator) so it just doesnt do anything after I log/switch. I already updated bios and graphics card which is nvidia 9500gs.
Any ideas?

A:Screen Going black- freezing or stuck when logging off/switching users

Slow shutdown/User log off can be a result of little ram, or frag. This was also a commom issue even with 4GB of ram prior to SP1.

Try defragging.

Are you using reg cleaners, or using any media extenders? (i.e., Xbox)

If it is a desktop you may want to see If it is using "Away mode", or "prevent idling to sleep" mode (this is common for extenders).

Also,

Try this to sfc/scannow
System Files - SFC Command

How To Make Vista more responsive and faster

Memory Diagnostics Tool

Further resolution issues may be to check the GPU, and other issues through Vista diagnostics. Do the above first though, still if it offers resolution

fresh install of win10 x64 pro from usb using the media creator tool.

First off, I upgraded from win7 to win10, and the freezes with black screens started.

I reformated, did a fresh install from USB, same thing happened.

I assumed it might have been a failing hard disk, so I stuck a new hard drive in the machine, and am getting the same results.

thanks for any help!

A:fresh win10 x64 pro install random freezing, black screen, no bsod

just happened again. I have this PC connected to a TV via HDMI.

when the freeze occurs, i can tell I lose control of inputs (mouse/keyboard) and the screen turns black for a couple of seconds, returns for an instant (again frozen), and then goes black. audio seems to continue, but bugged out. the hard drive activity light stays solid. when the hard drive activity light stops, so does the audio.

here is the latest collection
*also i notice google chrome seems to bug out on me. randomly certain tabs will not load, and remain all white, and not respond.
