BSOD while trying to Eject a USB Thumb Drive

Q: BSOD while trying to Eject a USB Thumb Drive

I was trying to remove a USB Thumb Drive, and that's when it crashed. Also, when it booted back up after the crash, it said there was a problem with my antivirus. My antivirus is working though. If this crash pertains to a driver, please note that I installed the latest Graphics Driver and it was really buggy. So I reverted back to my old Graphics driver. I have not had a problem in a while, except for the Windows Mail app. This is the first time it has crashed in a while.

Preferred Solution: BSOD while trying to Eject a USB Thumb Drive

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: BSOD while trying to Eject a USB Thumb Drive

The zip file you uploaded is empty, nothing in it. Try again but right click on dm_log_collector and select RUn as Administrator, see if that helps. Upload the zip file again then please.

I have a thumb drive in my computer and tried to eject it by going to the option of safely removing the item in the system tray. This usually works without a problem but yesterday and today, it said it could not eject it because it was in use. I have no programs open on my computer so I am unsure why this is happening. Any ideas? I don't like just ripping it out without safely ejecting through that program.

A:Solved: Thumb Drive Won't Eject

This happens when you are still using the thumb drive. In order to safely remove it, just click on your C:drive which will get you off your thumb drive. Now you can just Right click on the thumb drive and select the safely remove feature. This has happened to me also, hope it helps

This amounts to an annoyance only, but I thought I'd ask in case someone has a solution.
I find I always have to eject my thumb drive exactly twice.

This happens on at least two laptops:
A Toshiba Satellite with Windows 10 Home 10586.545An Asus X555LA also on the same build of Windows Most often I'm using a Cruzer SanDisk drive. This is when I use ?Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media? from the task bar.It always takes exactly two tries. First time get a pop up window ?Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device? ?Windows is unable to stop the device?? Second time works fine. Even when I do it immediately after the first. This happens when all docs involving the thumb drive and the apps that used them are all closed. It happens if I plug in the drive, don't do anything, then try to eject.Waiting before ejecting doesn?t seem to matter. In Task Manager I verified no associated apps running then tried it. Don?t know if there are pertinent background apps.If I right click on the drive in the File Explorer tree and select eject it works the first time.Another thumb drive, Attache 1GB, behaves the same way.Another thumb drive, Kingston 2 GB, behaves the same way.I think this happened on at least one of my computers before the Windows 10 upgrade, but I don?t remember the details. For the SanDisk at least, select in File Explorer, right click, Properties, Hardware tab, Properties, Change Settings, Policies: Quick Removal is selected.

Does anyone have a fix? Thanks.

A:Uanble to eject cd from cd drive and also cd drive missing in my computer

First off, reboot. That should allow you to remove the CD.

If the drive is still missing, try this.

Download CDgone, right click on the downloaded file and choose Extract All, then double-click on cdgone.reg Say "Yes" to the merge question and then reboot. See if the drives have returned. You may have to re-install CD burning applications, since they're the ones that tinker with the filter setting in the registry that caused the drives to disappear.

Under XP Media Center
I have two internal HDs two CD drives, one ext. HD and Windows has assigned drive letters to all and all have been stable over the years the very weird thing , and I can't figure out why, is that for my USB thumb drive - which I always plug into the same USB port it changes letters after an extended period - say about 8 months, it will go from "G" to "I" and then back. It is bothersome only because I use the "Send To" command for many files. is there a way to stabilize this or is it just another XP annoyance I must put up with.
thanks

A:windows XP keeps alternating drive letter for thumb drive

goto control panel

in the right hand side you should see all the drives
go to the the drive that you want to change the letter ID
right click - then choose "change drive letter" a box will appear with the current letter
choose a new letter and click ok then its all done same letter every time

Stinger.exe will run from a flash drive an will seek out and find most of the more recent worms and viruses. You can find it here:

I would think for any full fledged av program you could put the exe. file on the flash drive and then install it on most any computer. Such programs as Avast, Antivir, and AVG should work in that manner.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

My first thought would be a physical problem with the button. Optical drives don't have any drivers as such to download, they are an inbuilt driver in Windows. If it works fine via the Control Panel (right click, eject) as you say but doesn't work with the button on the machine, then I suspect the button may be broken.

Probably your easiest solution is to but a new drive, they are pretty cheap.

Hello All,
When I plug in an external drives, flash flash using the USB connector to a WinXP system, I have the curly green arrow icon shows up on the system tray on the bottom right hand corner. When I disconnect, I click on this icon and enable disconnect. I can hear the external hard drive spin down and comes to a stop every time. The system pops up a ready to disconnect message and then I unplug the device.
In Win7, when I disconnect, I go to the tray (actually the triangle icon) and bring up the "Safely remove hardware and eject media". Click on the eject media option. Again, the system tells me the device is ready to disconnect. But I never hear the external hard drive spin down to a stop. Every time, when I unplug, I can hear the spinning drive comes to an abrupt stop.
Does this unplug USB drive feature in Win7 really works? Will this abrupt stop of the hard drive damage the disk?
Thanks in advance.

Hello. I have a G50 notebook running Windows 10. The internal DVD drive does not appear to autorun any disk that is inserted (CD/DVD/Data, etc.). Whenever a disk is inserted, it spins for about 10 seconds or so, but then nothing happens. All the "auto-play" settings appear to be correct. When I manually open File Explorer, then the associated programs run, but only when I do that. I've applied all outstanding updates from both Microsoft AND Lenovo, but no change. At first I presumed it was a Windows problem and did a full system recovery, but also no difference. After doing that, I connected an external USB DVD drive and that works just fine. When I pop a CD or DVD into the external drive, it automatically runs the associated program right away. Only the internal drive requires me to manually open via File Explorer. Does this clearly point to a faulty drive? Any other possible causes/solutions? If any other information is needed from me, I'll gladly supply it. Thank you in advance.

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 which I purchased in Sept. of 2005.

It has 1GB of memory and 160GB of disk.

The system was running fine until just recently when I tried to upgrade from

After booting into SAFE MODE and disabling all the startup programs, I was able to uninstall the partial install
of NAV. Since then, I have been using the free AntiVir AV software.
Currently, the system is only semi-stable.
At times, I get the following errors:
1. BSOD ("IRLQ not less than or equal") when I eject a DVD after a DLA write session
2. Once in a while ZoneAlarm (free) says it needs to shut down TrueVector, even though it seems to keep running.
3. Once in a great while, on shutdown, I get a message "Can't write to address xxxx"
I am currently running the Windows version of MemTest and after 450% coverage there have been no errors.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have an external eSATA drive in a Nexstar case connected to one of the eSATA ports on the motherboard (Asus P9X79-LE). When I power the drive on, it is detected and the volume automounts, but when I have finished with it (I use it for backup) Windows appears to have no way to eject the volume before powering it off and removing it. The "Safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray doesn't list it as one of the devices that can be ejected, and when I right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer, there is no "Eject" option on the right-click menu as there is for a USB drive.

Is there a method to eject the volume - ie the equivalent of the Linux "umount /dev/partitionID" command, which I can use in Linux to unmount such a drive before removing it.

A:How do I eject an eSATA drive?

I use this Sync from sys internals to flush the buffer to disk and then just disconnect.

You could also eject it from disk management (type R then diskmgmt.msc then right click on the disk and remove the drive letter) or from diskpart (type diskpart on command prompt, then list disk, select disk 1 (or whatever), remove all noerr (to unmount all partitions)

You are best to mount the pen drive directly into the computer (hopefully in a USB 2 connector).

The USB 1 hub that you spoke of is the problem, they just don't have enough to hold the pen drive and mouse (possibly other USB devices connected to it.
You should purchase a USB 2 powered hub.

I recently tried to burn as ISO to disc with image burn. I was little confused by it. After it had erased the disc, then written the image to disc- it ejected the disc and told me it couldn't close the tray because it is a slimline drive (no disc tray- it's just a slot to put it in)

But now if I try to right click the drive under my computer, I will get an hourglass freeze. It only happens with my CD drive, not my computer or any other drives. Same thing happens if I left click the drive (luckily I can do that WITHOUT a freeze) and click eject this disc from the menu on the left. I can not use a toothpick/paperclip to make it eject the disc because it doesn't have one.

I bought a Seagate Expansion 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive.

Not that it's really relevant to explain that other than to illustrate how important it is that I don't blow the thing up, but I bought it to create a disk image in Macrium Reflect Home Edition v6 (which I did), in preparation for upgrading from Win7 to Win10, just in case things go very badly when I do that.

But I notice that when it's plugged in and I right-click on it in Windows Explorer, no "Eject" option appears in the drop-down menu.

So I just unplugged it.

Is "Eject" just not appearing because an expansion drive is made in such a way that no preparation is needed before safely unplugging it?

Or am I risking data loss or worse by unplugging it without preparation?

A:Don't need to eject an expansion drive?

Down in your tray near the clock should be a "Safely Remove Hardware" button, clicking it should give a list of items you want to unplug from your system. Once hit to unplug/disconnect an item, the notice of "It is now safe to unplug {nameofitem} from your computer" will appear allowing you to safely unplug the drive

Hello,

I hope I have followed the instructions properly.

I have a brand new Toshiba laptop which is running on windows 7 64bit. I installed dbpoweramp and after the first couple of days it began to crash every the software ejected a disc. If I click the "eject" icon it crashes, or if I set it to eject after completion it crashes. I can manually eject a disc by pushing the button on the drive or by right-clicking on the drive, however, ejecting using the button sometimes fails to produce any result whatsoever.

The computer was taken back to Best Buy for service and it was "infected" but they were not able to tell me what was specifically removed. I got back home and the problems were not fixed at all. I then took it back and the OS was reinstalled. I installed a fresh version of dbpoweramp and the got the same BSOD crash immediately.

When you eject the USB flash drive do you click the Safely Remove Icon before pulling it out? If you don't, it will have a hard time connecting next time you put it in.
If the USB Flash Drive is not recognized when you put it in, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager are there any devices with a Yellow Flag or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers is there an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it, then remove the Flash Drive and restart your computer. Put the Flash drive into a different USB port. If you don't want to restart, put the USB into a different USB port and in the Device Manager, Right click Any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. You should get New Hardware Found.

You can buy thumb drive in any computer store I'm sorry I am not familiar where, Any thumb drive will do...in any OS..Just make sure also the size or capacity fit what you are planning to use..If you use it as a back-up drive. Then you have to buy bigger sizes.

I am thinking about getting a Thumb Drive to cut down on all the CDs and Floppies I keep having to drag out. I use a Dell Inspiron 2500 - Windows XP -Internet Explorer.

What type and size of Thumb drive would you suggest. Also does it come with software to install? I would be using it to back-up "My Documents"/Pictures, etc.

Thank you.

I have a user with a 4gig USB thumb drive that when she plugs it into her front USB ports it shows up as a 3.5 floppy with only 1.44MB memory.

I have tried formatting the drive to no avail.

She says its recognized on a co-workers computer and all works fine.

what could be causing it to act flaky on her PC?

thanks

HELP!!! I just bought a new PNY 8gb thumb drive for my Dell E6400 laptop running XP. It worked great for the first few tries. Today, every time I plug it in the USB port I keep getting "Cannot find HOnEq.Exe"
I don't know why it's not auto-playing, and allowing me to read the files I put on the thumb drive earlier. But, I can go to My Computer, and right click on the thumbdrive to view the contents. But why did it stop automatically recognize the thumbdrive and why is that warning constantly popping up. There is no virus..I scanned that. All devices appear to be working. Should I return the thumb drive and get a different brand/model? Or is there a simple fix? Also, I checked to update the driver but it said I already had the latest driver. Did something get corrupted? HELP!!!

The most likely situation is that the thumb drive got a virus which was later removed by your antivirus or someone else's. In that case there will still be a file (probably a hidden and system file) called "Autorun.inf". If you delete that file the drive will be back to normal.

In case you don't know, to show hidden and system files go to tools>Folder options>view, check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected Opperating system files.

I am old school, so this new computer has thrown me a bit.   I am presuming that the USB ports on the top of the Envy tower are for thumb/flash drives.  I attempted to insert one and it will not go in.  I was able to insert it in a USB port in the back of the tower, but was unable to find any drive to open it.  What as I doing wrong?   Thanks much

Please Advise.

right click my computer, click on manage, click on disk management and see if it sees your thumb drives there.

Are you using a usb hub or plugged directly into the computer?

Exactly what method or process are you using to try to format the thumb drive.
Could you install the thumb drive and use this tutorial to post a picture.
Also let us know what size and brand the thumb drive is.

Good day all, Got an HP 4gb thumb drive. Everything appeared to be ok. Found new hardware bubble came up in task bar, then the found new hardware wizard came up. No new drive was indicated on "My Computer" (using XP). Exchanged thumb drive at store. Came home and tried again in all 4 USB ports as before, same results. Tried it in our laptop and drive was indicated in "Computer" (using 7). Tried a same model but older HP 4gb drive, with data already on it in the original computer and it worked as it should as did 2 PNY sticks. Any guesses? Thanks.
