WD USB Drive malfunction

Q: WD USB Drive malfunction

ok guys, I really need your help pleeeeeeease!!!

I have the same problem that Jordan Clout, and I've tried the same things that he did with his USB and the solution that worked for him... but without the same result, the F*@# usb device is still unknown.

" Solved: USB Device Malfunction
I recently purchased a USB stick for school related matters. I managed to save my files to the USB stick from our home computer without any issues, worked on some of those files at school and when I tried to access them later at home I encountered a problem. I'm unable to read anything on the USB stick as my computer now doesn’t recognize the device .

It may be co-incidental but I'm also getting an error message when I try to print any document from the hard drive. I've tried different ports and neither the USB stick nor the printer works. I can print a test page direct from the printer itself.

When attempting to print an error message appears as follows:

'One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it'. I've looked into the port location and it indicates that 'no drivers are installed for this device'. The device is enabled and I've performed the Toubleshoot without any success.

I have checked the cables and all connections appear OK.

I've looked through the Device Manager and checked the USB Controllers. For the 'unknown device' I proceeded through Properties into the Driver section which indicates 'No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device'.

I have checked each USB Root Hub and noted that 'This device is working properly'. The same applies for each USB Open Host Controller - 'This device is working properly'..."

I'm using my PC, OS win TINY XP Rev 06 SP3, USB port V1.0, pentium 4 2.4Ghz.
My USB "unknown" device is a Western Digital portable hard drive model WD2500XMS-00.

Please help!!!!! very important info is stored in there (including my porn LOL)

Preferred Solution: WD USB Drive malfunction

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I recently purchased an HP ProBook 450 G3. I am using two passport compact 1 TB drives with my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports. In normal use there is no problem. However, when I copy a lot of data from one to the other (or from one to the laptop's internal drive) the drives keep disconnecting. I know this because first I will get a copying error saying either the source or the destination is missing. Then I will hear the "chime" that Windows makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. Then the autoplay window for the Passport drive will appear. It seems that it spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects. I can continue using it for a time afterward, but it always spontaneously disconnects at some point, always when I am doing large data transfers.

I wondered if I have a poor physical connection---the USB plugs seem a bit loose. I checked if there is any vibration or movement that could break the connection, but so far there is no evidence that anything is moving. The disconnection always happens when a lot of data is being transferred, while the drives are sitting completely still.

Any ideas how to debug this?

A:Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

This is a hard situation to diagnose from a distance IMO. "Loose" is somewhat subjective, and barring serious abuse the only kinds of usb connectors & ports I've ever seen fail mechanically are mini and micro USB2 types.

I'd be inclined to suspect the drives first, especially if they are from the same family and were produced around the same time (the "bad batch" phenomenon). Have you tried to reproduce the problem on other machines, or with different drives on your machine?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not. Feel free to move it if I've placed it wrong.

I've got a Dell Optiplex GX280, Windows XP Pro SP2, and a DVD burner and for some reason, DVD-Rs won't play in it anymore. Commercial DVDs seem to work, but DVD-Rs won't. I've got one in there right now, and it won't even recognize there's a disc in there.

The software that pops up when a commercial DVD is put in is that PowerDVD proggy. It won't recognize my DVD-Rs either.

Awhile back I bought a Laptop from dell, the inspiron 2200, and just recently, the Dvd/CD-RW Drive stopped working. It will open and close, and when I put a CD in, the green light will flash, but nothin happens, aswell, all links to the CD drive are gone, and the computer doesnt even know it HAS a Cd drive, Normally when stuff likes this, or any other problem happens, I usually just blame it on virus's/spy ware, and wipe the drive and re-install windows, but seein as how the CD drive isnt workin, that isnt an option lol.

Well, any help is apreciated, thx.

A:Laptops DVD/CD-RW Drive Malfunction

I would test if its a software or hardware issue by installing a bootable CD, and verifying the bios has the CD first in the boot order, in it and see if this kicks off the boot portion. this will tell you if its a hardware or an OS issue.

If its a hardware issue it can be 2 things a bad CD drive and must be replaced or an onboard controller issue and this really means a motherboard replacement.

My flash drive was working perfectly this morning but today went I went to my university's lilbrary, I could not access the files using the computers there. Every time I tried, a pop up alerted me that "the USB device has malfunctioned" and it could not be recognized. I tried it on my laptop, and it worked like normal for an hour or so and then I began to get the same alert. Is there any way I can fix it or at least retrieve the information on my flash drive?

Use Disk Management to see how big the drive is, how its partitioned, and if there is any unallocated space on the drive: http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm

And you can use Memtest86+ to test the RAM: http://www.memtest.org/

Hi, ive seen a similar error to mine posted a number of times unfortunatly with no answer thats worked for me. my usb ports have allways worked fine then one day i plug in my flash drive and get an error similar to this: Windows says that the USB Device is malfunctioning and therefore cannot recognize the device. Ive tried johnwills steps along with others that have been posted before but it still didnt work. strange thing is that the usb ports work with my camera and modem, but not with flash drive and my flash drive works in different computers.
this is driving me ***** mad!!!!!!

A:USB flash drive malfunction

Are you sure you followed my USB fix steps exactly? I'd try them one more time, taking care not to miss anything.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

I recently inherited an older model dell computer from my dad. As far as I know, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it when I got it. But who knows what could have happened on the trip here. Anyway, I hooked it up and turned it on and everything was going fine until I tried to replace my operating system with a new one. I went and bought windows 7, put the disc in the drive, closed it, and.........nothing. Some flashing lights, some softly whirring gears, but that's it. No windows popping up, no programs magically opening. I looked at some other forums and a couple of them mentioned a device managing something on the control panel. I tried to find it to no avail. I guess I don't have one??? Is that even possible? Whatever, don't care. All I wanna know is how to get this new operating system to work and make the other one and all connected personal data disapear FOR-EV-ER. Anyone have any ideas?

OK, so yesterday I had a DVD in my Dell PC's (Windows XP) disc drive. I was playing it with PowerDVD. All was fine. I paused it and left the house for a few hours, leaving it open. When I returned, I ejected and reloaded the disc (If I leave it too long it freezes up, and reloading has long been the easiest way to get it going again). Nothing happened. My computer now refuses to believe that there is ever a disc of any kind in the disc drive.

There's NO error message, NO other indication of anything wrong. It simply doesn't recognize that anything is there for reasons beyond my understanding.

I purchased a 64 GB hard drive recently. I'm having a really difficult time copying jpeg files onto it - or any files, for that matter. I used this: downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/peripherals/SP27608.exe to reformat it, and when I did, now it seems to be working, but I only have 32 GB of space!

I know for sure that there is at least 62.4 GB of space on this disk, so how can I 1) get it to work and 2) get ALL of that space to work?

I'm also going from Mac to PC and back again, and I've noticed that on both computers, I have difficulties, so it's not one or the other... it's the drive.

Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recently installed a brand spankin new ST3250410AS 250 GB SATA 3.0 gb/s drive, replacing my old ide drive. Windows installed fine. I downloaded and installed all of my asus M2N-SLI chipset drivers as well as video drivers. Everything seems to work fine. However, in my device manager, a device is still listed as missing drivers, and my seagate drive appears to be viewed by windows as an external drive (the safely remove hardware option is shown in the taskbar). Whats the deal? I have installed sata drives before and have not needed any additional drivers other that what comes with the mobo unless running a raid configuration, which in this case i am not.

Additional Note: I like to use usbmrs (usb mouse rate switcher) to force my polling rate up for gaming. I replaced the usbport.sys with an older version and tried running the patch, and it responds with an "unexpected error." Not sure if this is related but this is something i would also like help with.

A:xbox360 hard drive malfunction

There is a transfer cable you can get to pull your info from an old drive to a new one. Though, we don't know how damaged yours may be.
Other options would be to find software to access the drive on a PC but not sure where to get it or if it's even allowed by Microsoft.

You can do a few tests maybe.. Remove and reinstall the drive. (Never know if it could be a loose or dirty connection)
Try your drive on a friends XBox and try their drive in yours. That should show if the drive is bad or your console is having trouble. If your friends drive works, put yours back in and see if there is still a problem.
If your drive can't be read, last hope may be to try a transfer kit to a new drive.

hello i was fixing my buddies computer (dell) and needed to create a bootdisk to update his bios, and there was an option to create a bootable floppy or a bootable flash drive and i didn't have a floppy so i used my sandisk 1GB flash. after i copied the bootdisk files to my usb flash i restarted his computer with the usb flash connected and it did not work. the problem isn't that i couldn't update his bios because that was not really important, the real problem is that now my usb flash drive cannot be recognized by windows and i get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message on my computer whenever i connect it to the usb port. i understand the problem, and that is copying the bootdisk files to the flash drive changed the system files or whatever on the usb flash that tell windows how to handle it, and now windows sees that it isn't a regular usb flash anymore (now its a bootable disk), which is why i get the error message. i think what i want to do is reformat the usb flash outside of windows but i dont' know how to do this. ANY IDEAS??????

Here's the problem. I have a Simpletech external hard drive that, more or less, worked fine. I had it plugged in via usb, and could access files on it. I recently got an Epson NX415 printer/scanner which has a removable data drive for memory cards (compact flash, sD, etc.). After I installed the printer, I found that my computer wouldn't recognize my external drive anymore. When ever I try to turn it on/plug it in, I get the message "USB Device Not Recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, etc." Basically, it will recognize that "something" is plugged in, but windows has no idea what. If I unplug my printer from the computer, and turn my drive back on, it is detected just fine and I can access all my files. Plug the printer back in, the drive still works until I turn it off or restart the computer. If both Printer and External HD are plugged in, the HD malfunctions, but not with the HD alone. I've tried uninstalling all usb drivers also, no dice. It seems that the printer is doing "something" but I have no idea what, it doesn't even seem physically possible that the presence of the printer should have anything to do with the hard drive other than them both being plugged in via USB. Each is running on their own power cord and I've tried different USB port combinations for both devices.

A:USB Hard drive malfunction in conjunction with printer

Hi, This is not an uncommon problem. It would seem likely that you unplugged the USB cable from the external drive while data was being transmitted or without clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in your Systray. I have just done the same thing by mistake when pulling out a plug. Whether there is some service that can help you by reading your disk, I am not sure. I guess that I'm about to find out! I suggest you obtain USB 2 cables with LEDs that are colour coded or use coloured tape to denote which cable connector is which on your USB sockets. I will post again with any progress I make, colpurps

I have a Seagate 3 TB external hard drive (model SRD00F2) that I use on my desktop dell pc (windows 7 64-bit). I purchased the hard drive on 7/30/13 so it is not even a year old yet. I get an error message saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I have tried reformatting the drive, changing the drive letter, etc. I use the drive just for personal use, movies, music, word docs, etc. I have already removed everything from the drive in hopes to completely uninstall and start over with the drive but I still get the error message. Not sure what else I can do. Please help. Thank you

A:External Hard drive malfunction - Seagate 3TB

What type of file were you trying to open that got the error message?

What extension did it have?

Were you able to open other files with the same extension at the time you first got that error message---or did you get the error ONLY for that one file?

Were you ever able to open this particular file or files with a similar extension on this external drive?

I'd be surprised if a re-format is necessary, but I guess you've already done that.

OS: Win 7 Pro (64 bit)

I'm having two problems with my fairly new machine (less than half a year old) which appear unconnected, but I would like to clear up. First, the DVD drive stopped working and is not visible (described in the log as a controller error). I have attempted to rewrite the registry entry for the drive, and while it temporarily does work, after a restart it disappears again.

The second problem is relating to packet loss on my router. I would like to be able to exclude the possibility that the packet loss is owing to a trojan/virus/etc. Following a google search, I happened upon a thread on this forum from someone with a similar problem, who was recommended to run a diagnostic using the tools which you suggest. I have now done this as well in the hope that either or perhaps both of these issues can be resolved (should they be owing to malware/trojan/etc.).

Thank you very much for your time!

DEP processing is flaky. Setting /noexecute=OptOut and adding HP digital monitor to the exceptions list does not cause DEP enable for all processes.

No 'restart needed' popup is displayed....
?? CHROME, AVAST, FIREFOX all show DEP (permanent). All others DISABLED.....
?? setting /noexecute=AlwaysOn works, all processes DEP'd, BUT disallows HP digital monitor (can print, cannot scan or retrieve printer info).
I do have Administrator privileges but thought I noticed a popup (IIRC) re two items (processes?) not functioning, CIMV2? perhaps and one other. WBEMTEST checked for DEP 3 (OptOut), verified it was set (I forget the Superclass now, under root/cimv2).
Is this a Startup issue of some kind? Something not loading? GPEDIT under XP not helpful unless DISabling access to various options.
Thanks.... :-/

Have you looked in the Task Manager to see if you have any Yellow marks by the usb hubs on the tree in the left pane? If so, that would indicate a driver problem.

My modem is usb and required a download into it for it to function properly. The software came with the modem. Also, try another usb port if you have one on your computer.

Hope this might help,

I have tried several combinations of lid closed/open, power cord in/out, but eventually the result is always the same. 2) When powering it on after these shutdowns, the trackpad does not recognize multiple-fingers gestures, requiring a restart. 3) The disk usage frequently goes up to 100% despite no ongoing activity. 4) Sometimes, pressing the power button to power it on results in the disk starting, then abruptly stopping, then restarting again several times, before the laptop finally starts. 5) The system sometimes freezes for several seconds, even the cursor stops, only to resume any input movement later.

I have tried everything in my knowledge: I updated the BIOS, the HDD firmware, installed all Windows updates, fresh-installed Windows, but nothing seems to work (although the HDD thing apparently solved the "always 100%" problem). I ran both Windows in-built check-disk and third party programs to check for errors on the HDD, but none showed up. I'd be really glad if it was something I can fix at home, since I really need this machine to study, so sending it to be repaired/replaced back at Amazon is my very last option due to time. Hope you guys can h... Read more

I have a Atapi 6x/32x dvd-rom. Recently, when attempting to insert and install any type of software...dvd or cd it causes my computer to crash and I need to reboot. Sometimes, at that point a warning appears during the reboot process indicating...fatal exception OE: page fault and lists too many numbers to repeat. Could this be hardware or software problems? I have a 2 year old micron 450MHz Intel II that required a hard drive replacement last year (13.0 GB Ultra ATA66 Hard Drive) after emmiting the "sound of Death" Any one have any clues? Thank you

A:dvd-rom malfunction?

For starters, go to start/settings/control panel/system/device manager/ cdrom tab, is it listed correctly , does it have any error indicators. If not, try selecting it, hit remove, reboot and reinstall the drive and software that came with it.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home Edition on it. All of my drives and devices connect externally and I access them through 3 different USB ports. A week ago I began having problems with my USB ports.

When I turn on my laptop, the devices (a mouse, keyboard and printer) initially are recognized and run well. Then I hear the noise from the comp as if I unplugged a device and my mouse, keyboard and printer are all no longer recognized by the comp. Sometimes I hear the noise as if I plugged them back in, sometimes I don't hear that noise but get an error message saying that my devices are not working properly and need to be replaced. All of my devices are in reality functioning properly. There does not seem to be consistency in when the USB ports stop functioning. During this time I am not touching the connections and at times am not even actively using the comp.

Do I have a trojan virus? or are my USB ports beginning to simply malfunction?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I can't do much with a laptop that cannot save a file to a disk or print a file. I have ad ware and spy ware removal tools (ad aware, spybot search and destroy, spyguard) as well as an updated firewall and antivirus (zone alarm suite) running on the comp. No major risks or problems have been found by these programs.

A:USB Malfunction

Try this: Go to start, control panel, system, click the hardware tab, and click device manager, click the plus next to Universal Serial Bus controllers, and right click and click uninstall on any USB root hubs. Then restart your computer and windows should detect your usb and reinstall the drivers.

Hello all,

Well, to get right into it, my PSU conked out. I shut down my computer (Start > Turn Off Computer . . .), it didn't automatically turn off like it normally does. So, I tried the power switch, nothing happened. Finally, I flipped the switch on the PSU. Obviously, it was off now.
The next day, I went to turn it on, and it didn't. I tested the power switch, it was fine, so the next thing to check was the PSU. Took it to a computer service store, they tested it, it was dead. I sent it back to the company, they sent me a brand new one. And that brings us to today.

I installed the PSU in my computer, hooked it up to everything (mb, harddrive, video card, CD-Rom, fans). I pushed the power button, the PSU lit up (it has a lighted fan on it) and the fan went on, this lasted about a second, then it shut off. Well, then I went through step-by-step:
- Connected only the motherboard to the PSU - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard and the larger fan - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, and the harddrive - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, and video card - turned on, stayed on, did not beep. (apparently it was beeping because there was no video output.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, video card, and plugged everything into the back of the computer - turned on, stayed on.
- Connected everything listed above, plus the smaller fan, turned an... Read more

A:PSU Malfunction

Although there are things like power surges and lightning strikes that could kill a PSU, there is really no reason to try to come up with a scenario for what happened. Often they just die and it can be without warning. I think you are saying that now everything works. If the new PSU suddenly quits then you may have a problem that needs to be figured out.

The fan set up looks pretty standard.

I have a current issue with my laptop that I would like some assistance on. When I go to play a computer game (such as DOTA 2), the CPU fan malfunctions a few minutes into playing the game and then intermittently switches off then on until I shut the computer off for a while. Is there any way to fix this issue? I have already updated my bios and it did not help.

A:CPU Fan Malfunction

Hi jdendrin,

First and foremost, please post your computer specs. Posting computer specs definitely helps us troubleshoot computer issues more efficiently. What is the brand/model of your laptop? Do you have warranty on your laptop? It's possible that the fan inside your laptop is dying.
