Lenovo T420, Type 4177 Review

Q: Lenovo T420, Type 4177 Review

Lenovo T420, Type 4177-CTO. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit. 8 GB RAM, 500 GB HD, third party 128 GB SSD added. After inspecting many laptops I chose the ThinkPad T420. The only better laptop was Apple and I needed different software. An important consideration for any computer is support. Lenovo has excellent support at 1-800-426-7378. Tech support and repair happens right here in the United States. Repairs are done in Tennessee. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a solid laptop. It is not as light as some laptops but strength and durability need to be considered. Weight of machine with a large 6 cell battery and a slice battery = 6 lb. 7 oz. (3060 kg). The laptop weighs 5 lb. 5 oz. (2430 kg) with just the large 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery weighs 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (500kg) and the 6 cell battery would then weigh 1/3 less. You can compute the difference. Keep in mind my battery life with the slice battery installed is about 17 hours. The slice battery also places the laptop on a slight angle with the rear elevated. It is about the same tilt as with the docking station. You cannot have the slice battery installed while the laptop in in the docking station. The 6 cell battery sticks out the back so it is not a perfect cosmetic fit. The 4 cell battery will look nicer, be lighter and probably last about 4 hours. The overall design is perfect in my opinion. I find no problems. The T420 uses the LED night light that shines from the top of the display to the keyboard area. It can be turned on and off with the Fn function key. There are many Fn function keys that are great. I really like the Fn-Space bar that magnifies the display. The speakers are well positioned and are adequate. They could have higher volume considering where they are installed.I really like the Lenovo mouse pad and mouse button configuration. I wish the mouse speed adjustment would go a little faster but it is acceptable. Some laptops I tested are far too slow, even with the mouse settings as fast as they go. The T420 has the best mouse operation of any laptop. The Windows Pro 7 operating system and Lenovo will only allow one set of recovery disks. Do your backup recovery disks with good quality DVDs. Lenovo will provide a set of recovery disks if you need them. DVD-RAM is not supported by the Recovery Disks, but SSD drives are supported. The Lenovo T420 is designed to run on SSD drives. Recovery Data notes. If you stop in the middle of Disk 4, you will have the first 3 disks and you can still make a copy of all 4 disks. At the end of disk 4 the computer turns Recovery disk copy off. You cannot make more copies.Disc 1, Boot MediaDisc 2, Recovery Media 1Disc 3, Recovery Media 2Disc 4, Recovery Media 3 Notes:HD Boot time = 41.4 secondsSSD Boot time = 29.6 secondsThis is with little software installed. With more programs installed the boot up time will increase. Keep in mind the first phase of boot up consists of BIOS and hardware communications. With many programs installed the SSD will really be nice. The Registry loading will be totally SSD dependent and fast.HD partitions and size before SSD installation.Lenovo Recovery partition = 9.67GB used + 5.94GB free = 15.63GBSystem Drive partition = 3.34MB used + 865MB free = 1.17GBLocal Disk C partition = 27.9 GB used + 420 GB free = 448.96 GBTotal GB = 465.76 Window Performance test.4GB RAM installed7.1 Processor 5.9 RAM 4.7 Graphics 6.4 Gaming Graphics5.9 HD 8GB RAM installed7.1 Processor 7.5 RAM 5.9 Graphics 6.4 Gaming Graphics5.9 HD SSD and 8GB RAM installed7.1 Processor 7.5 RAM 5.9 Graphics 6.4 Gaming Graphics7.1 HD Adding SSD card(I used the MyDigitalSSD 128GB 50mm Bullet Proof mSATA PCI-e drive. Some SSDs are a little faster but cost much more.)Install SSDInitialized SSD card in My Computer, Manage, Disk DrivesTurn off laptop and remove HDBoot to Recovery discsRestore to factory default. (The Recovery disks only have the SSD to restore to)When finished you can test the operation of your laptop on the SSD drive. Test by going into your BIOS to make sure you know how to get there. Boot using F1 for BIOS setup.Turn off the laptop and install the hard drive.Boot to BIOS (Do this first before booting Windows)Remove HD from boot sequence. Go ahead and setup your boot sequence to something like SSD, DVD, and then USB, etc. Do not include the HDThen I go to My Computer, Manage, Disk Drives and I do some major changes here. You must make your own decisions. The SSD drive is prime real-estate and a 20GB recovery partition is out of the question (for me). The Recovery discs have been created. I decided to merge partitions on the SSD drive. Windows 7 Pro will handle this easily on the active drive. Now, there are actually 2 smaller partitions and the smaller 1GB partition cannot be removed. Apparently the operating system needs it. The larger 19GB partition can easily be removed and added to the C drive. No 3rd party partitioning software is needed with Windows 7 Professional. Go to Start, right click My Computer, left click Manage. Select Disk Management. Select the Lenovo_Recovery partition and remove it. Now select the primary partition (C: drive) and select merge. Use the full size of the deleted partition space. The System_Drv partition could not be removed on my SSD. It is only 1.17GB and probably essential. Change drive letters in Manage, Disk Management. Fortunately the main drive was named the C drive. I do not think you can change the drive letter of the active drive partition for some operating systems. After reinstalling the HD there is no telling what letter Windows will give it. Rename it to D drive if you want to. You can also remove the Recovery partition on the hard drive. I decided to depend totally on my backup restore DVDs and knowing Lenovo would send me another copy if needed. The computer controls the use of the 2 video card functions but it can also be controlled in the BIOS. Your warrantee is not void if you install the memory or SSD. The machine is designed for those additions. The installation of my extra memory was a tight fit. Be careful. Don?t use metal tools or do anything stupid. Notes: Boot to F11 for recovery. F12 for selecting boot device. Boot using F1 for BIOS setup. The ThinkAdvantage button takes you to a variety of places. I don?t really know where it goes. Now if you are looking for the User?s Guide you will only find the Hardware Manual. It takes the place of the User Guide and is formatted a little differently. It is OK. Most other attributes of the laptop are on the selection menus on the Lenovo web site. You can get just about anything you want except the T420 did not have a Blu Ray player at the time I ordered mine. It did not have a GPS option but it could be obtained via 3G subscriptions using telephone towers. If you want a real GPS you can buy many 3rd party USB modules that will tell you where you are at using global satellites.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Folks,I recently bought a refurbished Lenovo T420 which is a very nice piece of Kit, I am Hard of hearing and mostly use headphones for audio. However, this T420 seems to have something else other than the 3.5mm combo socket in place, on the right corner panel, just before the CD tray. The company I bought it from indicated that it should not be there and they suggested I try to  "Pry it out with a needle"?.Obviously I'm not going to do that untill I know what this is and why its there? I cannot connect normal head phones because there is no 3.5mm socket. Can anyone identify what this is please?3.5mm socket should be here

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

I went through the different steps mentioned in "clean-up-factory-bloatware" article, apart from last point which consists of re-installing my machine! But still I have BSOD and it drives me crazy.

I attached the DM Log Collector results. Hope you'll be able to find what causes this.

For updating my T420 in Lenovo support website, I installed the Lenovo Service Bridge. However, my security software detected it as a malware and deleted some files. Then every time the laptop starts, there will be a couple of pop-up windows (see lingks below), which is the same when I click the service bridge installation file. So I doubt that the service bridge is running somehow at the backstage. http://i.imgur.com/EBHdq8c.jpg http://i.imgur.com/P7t33ax.jpg When I clicked the detail button, a log file came out. PLATFORM VERSION INFO

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

Scott

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

Hi guys, I just spilled a glass of water on m Lenovo T420 laptop. I immediately turned it off and kept it upside down for a while and haven't turned it on for 8 hours now. Hi Lenoovoo,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would rather that you remove the battery and take it to a service center for general cleaning informing them of the immediate concern about the water spill. Do not attempt to power it on as tools may be needed to safely dry it up internally avoiding other issues.
How to Locate a Repair Center or Service Provider

If you have such skill and tools then you can use the hardware manual here a reference guide.

Your most recent .dmp files were from October. Make sure you have your system enabled for generating dump files. Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD OPTION TWO part 2. will configure them properly. Also, avoid using any disk cleaning software (CCleaner, Windows Disk Cleanup, etc.) after a crash occurs.

Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Thnak you! Z.

Hi Zjaz123456,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?

Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.

Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.

Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

My pc was running well and I decided to reinstall windows but this time I have problem...I have windows 10 and my laptop is Lenovo Thinkpad T420  My power plan minimum and maximum processor state are both set to 100% and for some reason i can't change them, they are like stuck to 100%. Even when I try to restore my settings to default the maximum and minumum processor state will still remain at 100%. I want to change my minimum processor state to 5% and maximum to 80%. I did it everytime after reinstalling windows and this time it just don't work. My laptop is overheating a lot while I'm playing games or just watching videos. I already tried to reinstall windows for one more time and first thing I did was changing maximum processor state in power options but it didn't let me type other number except 100%.  To be more clear what is my problem, here is recording of it: Please help, much appreciate, Thank You!

Have you tried to update the BIOS yet?  If not, that would be a good place to start.  You can also try pulling the battery out while having the laptop plugged in and see if you get the same results.  If so please let us know.

Hi All,3 weeks ago I was between the Yoga 900 with 16 GB ram and the X360 Spectre with only 8 GB. Then I was shure to buy the right notebook with the Yoga 900. Positive-Design-Flexibility-Touchscreen feedback Negative-Mouse/Touchpad (the two finger option as right click never worked, and the right click itself is only via usb mouse or via touch possible, the touchpad of my yoga does not work from beginning)-the screen flares sometimes after opening the notebook-the reaction after reopening the notebook is very slow and sometime fast enough-the battery life could be better But NO right click...!!!! Has anyone the same issue? I have reinstalled the drivers, i have checked and unchecked every option - really dissatisfying. I am an IT professionall and I don't get the problem - now I have to finish first my study (1 month to go), afterwards I will send my yoga to Lenovo! Cheers

First decent review of the X270. All looking good.Lenovo ThinkPad X270 Review by MobileTechReviewhttps://youtu.be/PxGL1vIX_dw"Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad X270, the refresh of Lenovo?s smallest traditional business laptop. The X270 replaces the X260 in Lenovo?s 12.5? Ultrabook lineup, and it?s been refreshed with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake dual core, 15 watt CPUs and Intel HD 620 graphics. It gains a USB-C port and for a portable this small, it packs a lot of ports including Ethernet, HDMI and a dock connector. The 2.9 lb. /1.3kg notebook has Lenovo?s usual excellent backlit keyboard, an MS Precision trackpad, optional LTE 4G and a fingerprint scanner. The Bridge battery system is back with an internal 23 WHr battery and your choice of 3 removable batteries, the largest of which is 72 WHr and allows for extremely long runtimes. The machine is available with a 1366 x 768 TN panel or a 1920 x 1080 IPS display (both are matte and non-touch). Pricing starts around $800, depending on current Lenovo specials."

Hello everyone,

Thanks to Lenovo I had the opportunity to test and use the new Yoga 900S. As I also have Yoga 3 Pro I'll also compare the two.

Size, weight and build quality.
Yoga 900S is smaller and lighter (by 200 grams). However, they're both skinny 12.8mm thick.
The materials appear to be the same, but somehow 900S has much more metallic feel to it. It also feels more sturdy. It might be related to the smaller size of the 900S. The case on the inside has more of a leather feel to it compared to the rubbery feel in Y3P.

Keyboard:

I have mixed feelings with this one, because:
+ dedicated F~ key row - great!
+ 2 level backlight - love it too.
- much lower key travel compared to Y3P, but still comfortable enough.
? awkward placement of the right shift key. This could just be me, as I got used to Y3P's layout, which had the right shift key on the left side of the up arrow key instead of the right side.

Touchpad:
Slightly smaller, but still comfortable to use. I have no remarks. It does its job. It happened couple of times that the cursor jumped to the bottom right corner when I tried to click using left index finger while swiping with the right index finger. Not sure what happened, but it was so minor I'm suprised I still remember it did!

Screen:
The model I received has a Full HD screen (1920 x 1080). I've seen 1440p being mentioned around the net, but this particular model definitely has a FHD screen. I ... Read more

Hi! I am new to this forum, and need some assistance with an issue we are facing with an employee in the company I work for. By the way, took half an hour to find a "start post" button, your forums need a serious redesign... Here is the isse I am facing: The employee in question has a Lenovo P90 as described in the subject. And two HP EliteDisplay E241E monitors attached. When we connect and set up the two external monitors, one of them has a nice and sharp image, while the other looks very blurry and "out of focus". If we disable one of the external monitors and run the other together with the built in display, everything looks nice, but obviously the laptop screen is very small and we would like to have the same nice and crisp image on both of the external monitors. The system is set up like this:Lenovo P90 20EQHP EliteDisplay E241E - Connected via the VGA on the monitor through a dongle to the mDP output on the laptop.HP EliteDisplay E241E - Connected via the VGA on the monitor through a dongle to the HDMI output on the laptop. I figured that since we are connecting two identical displays, there really shouldnt be any scaling done, but consistently the secondary external monitor will have a much much more blurry image, even when running the exact same resolution and refresh on both monitors. I will get some screenshots from the user to illustrate the issue, updating this post when I have the screens. KR,Jens

Hello, I can't find what type of ram comes standard inside of my Lenovo Y50-70 4k UHD - no touch. I would like to upgrade and from what I have read it's best to stick with the same brands as whatever came in the machine. I'm by no means a hardware type of guy so I know very little when it comes to this other than I want to go from 8gb to 16gb. Also from my understanding the maximum supported RAM is 16gb right?

A:What type of RAM is OEM in my Lenovo Y50-70 4k UHD *not touch*

Hi maxshuty,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Yes, maximum RAM supported is 16GB.

Specifications declared from your hardware manual for this model :
DDR3L-1,600 MHz SODIMM × 2 (max 16 GB)

You have 2 slots for the RAM so 2 pieces of 8 GB DDR3 L (low voltage) 1,600 MHz SODIMM would work best for your machine.

OEM certified RAM here on page 91 item 11 :

11 RAM, Hyn HMT41GS6AFR8A-PB DDR3L 1600 8GB Part Number: 11201301 11 RAM, SK HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB/RD 8GB DDR3L 1600 Part Number: 1120270711 RAM, M471B1G73DB0-YK0 25nm 8GB DDR3L 1600 Part Number: 1120208211 RAM, RMT3160ME68FAF-1600 8GB DDR3L 1600 Part Number: 1120245011 RAM, Mic MT16KTF1G64HZ-1G6E1 DDR3L 1600 8GB Part Number: 11201304

Page 46 of the manual describes the steps on replacing the memory.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

A:What type of RAM & HDD that suit Lenovo Y50?

You can download and run a program called CPUID. After installing it and launching the app, select the memory tab and it will provide you with the details on the ram and what speed is already in there. You can go faster in speed and up to 16GB of Ram (what I am running atm on my Y50). HDD you can use any 2.5 inch HDD, I went with the Samsung 850 EVO. If your going the HDD to SSD route, buy the SSD with the data migration kit and cable. Will make your life a lot easier.
