Windows folder detail buttons have changed

Q: Windows folder detail buttons have changed

I just have this small problem. In my folders the details buttons have changed. Im not sure when it happend but I installed some software that came with my new MP3 Player so maybe that has something to do with it. Is there anyway I can change this back to what it used to be?

Preferred Solution: Windows folder detail buttons have changed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

But my windows and buttons (the start bar and stuff-->like in display properties) is set to windows classic, with no other option avaiable. and the headers on windows opened has small font and a class style. this changed automatically. However, the main thing is that an error message keeps popping up that say:The instruction at "0x75606eb5" referenced memory at "0x00000008". Hi there!

I'm deploying a XP image on a small company with an AD, and thus, domain users.

I'm having a lot of troubles making all new users view all folders as Detail View.
The best would be editing customized views in an user and then make it as default for all new users that would login. That would mimic settings like the Control Panel detail view.

And as a side request, I would like to make the Icon "User Accounts" open the window "control userpasswors2". Is it possible? The XP's wizard for the User Accounts is no good in my case.

Best regards!

I worked out how to populate the properties in my different Office document types like Title, Author, Description, etc. and then display them for identification and sorting in my Windows Explorer folders. Now I'm trying to figure out put values in those same column details for the Folders the files are in so I can have more information about the folder than just the folder name. So far I can not find the interface to do this.

I am confused. I want my Folders to be Tiles, and the files inside those folders to be viewed as Details. In one of my W7 machines, that's how it is. In another, whatever change I make to the folder view takes effect on the files, and vice versa.

This is what I want for the folders:

and inside it I want:

INSTEAD, if I have the folders as tiles, I get:

Well, if I change the view to this:

then the folders look like this:

How do I get each view to "stick" when I select it for that folder/file view? (This is one of those screaming in the night Windows issues. One machine does it with no intervention. It just works. The other machine does not, nor can I find any option or menu function to do so.)

A:How do I keep the Folder as Tile and files in it as Detail?

The area in the registry keys where Windows tries to keep track of these settings can fill up and/or get messed up.

The easiest solution is to remove those registry keys via these steps:
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default

If you have a lot of objects (icons-shortcuts, files, folders) on your desktop and if those objects are arranged (as opposed to all being on the left), then carefully read the notes before doing those steps.

After the reset, set each folder with files to the Details view.
The first time that you open a folder, some info about that folder goes into those registry keys. If you rename or move a folder, the old info stays in those registry keys and more info is written to those keys for the new folder name/location. In the Details view, the width of each column is stored in those keys for each folder. It gets messy after years of use. There is a limit. Windows (file) Explorer gets flaky once the limit is reached.

Using Windows XP Pro, sp3.

I use the folder's "Comments" detail, for all folders, but especially for my MP3 collection.

I would like to increase the length of this detail from the default of about 50 (I really haven't counted) to the max (probably 255).

This is more than likely a registry tweak, but I can't find a thing about it!

Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks for your time and suggestions in advance,

A:Folder "comments" Detail Size

I added a comment to one of my MP3 files...the max it would display was 79 characters...even though I entered 140. I haven't found anything about the maximum amount of characters allowed either. In testing...I entered the numbers 1 ->0 and at the end of each entry I used CTRL+ENTER to force a link break...Even with the line break, the comments still showed as 1 continuous line...so having a very long comment would cause the opened window to be extremely wide...to show the entire Comments column...and even then would probably not show the entire comment. As a safety concern, GBJim...I would not post an email address in posts, as this could lead to a lot of spammed messages.

I've never seen this before and I'm usually very good at finding the problem on Google and solving it myself. But I've searched quite deeply and used the search history here just to make sure but it seems I'm the only one with this issue:

Operating System: Windows 7
NOTE: I run Windows 7 in Classic View (Win 95/98 look)
Folder Browser: Explorer
Issue Last Noticed: Only today
Issue Details: I like to have my files free to arrange them as I please (i.e. not by date, name, size, etc. but by individual content and sometimes frequency of use), and not automated in any way, shape, or form. So unlike others I am not wanting every folder sorted by Name. But for some strange and odd reason, I right-click on the folder (as I've done for years) to "Sort By", and then to "More..." and at the top of the check boxes is "Name". It is checked.

When I click to un-check it, I only get the loud error-blip sound and it will not let me un-check it. I can click, check, and un-check every other option but "Name" seems to be set on some sort of default.

When I change the "Sort By" options, the folder lets me sort them by the options there, but then locks the folders in place. In attempt to drag a file around, the mouse gives me the "unavailable" cursor. Example: I can sort my files by Date, but then I cannot modify them in any way after that except by the list of options Sort By gives me.

I am new to Windows 7. When I used the search feature of Win XP I was able to sort files by subdirectory within the directory I was searching. When I search in Windows 7 the results are sorted by the smallest subdirectory within the directory.

For example I have a directory "2010" containing subdirectories by client name "Smith," "Jones" etc. Each client subdirectory contains 3 similarly named a subdirectories e.g. "letters" "pleadings" "miscellaneous." When I search, the folder detail displays as follows:
"pleadings(\\Network\shared\Client Accounts\2010\Smith)."

Since I am searching in the 2010 subdirectory the display should sort by the next largest subdirectory in the tree which would be the client names. Sorting by the smallest, repeating, subdirectory "pleadings" is of no use to me.

The question: is there a way to make Windows 7 search and sort by the next largest subdirectory within the directory that you are searching?

Hi! I'm running Windows XP Home and at the suggestion of an online friend I tried using TweakUI, version, to try to solve a minor log on annoyance.

That annoyance was the log on screen that asked me to click the user button before I could see my desktop each time I turned on my little hand-me-down laptop.

In TweakUI under Logon>Autologon I checked "Logn on automatically at system startup" and left the "User name:" field set to "Owner."

That worked to bypass the annoying logon on screen, but now the "Shut Down" screen has changed from the XP screen with the three red, yellow and green buttons, to the Win2K style Shut Down drop down box.

I don't care for that drop down box because it remembers my last choice, so if I choose "Restart" one time, then the next time try to shut down my computer I end up restarting it.

How can I get that XP three button shut down screen back.

P.S. Is there a way to change my logon name for the Tech Support Forum from "Sleepless in Sea" to "SleeplessInSeatl"?

Undo what you did in Tweak UI. To solve your logon issue go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords2 and press enter. Uncheck User Must Enter User Name and Password to Use This Computer. press Apply, type in your password and press OK restart the computer.

I have a totally new problem with my MS Intellimouse Optical. I have used this for some time (98, ME, XP) with no problems. I now have a new system - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have downloaded and installed the latest Intellipoint software (7) from Microsoft, and installed the Mouse. But...
- The Mouse is recognised not as an Intellimouse Optical, but an Intellimouse Web
- I cannot therefore change the side button settings on the mouse (via Control Panel>Mouse) from the default "Forward" and "Back", or the centre button either.
This is annoying. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times, to no avail.

Does anyone know...??
(a) How to get Windows 7 to recognise my mouse as the proper type (Device Manager etc)....or
(b) How to hack the settings (XML / Registry / whatever) to change the default option, so the mouse does what I want it to without trying to change the buttons via the Control Panel.

Many thanks

Hello to everyone
I am new to these forums and I have come here for help

I installed some Mods for Oblivion and my directional keys Uparrow and leftarrow have some how ended up with multiple functions
Uparrow is also esc, F12, b,n and Windows key
Left arrow is also F2 and PgDown

Ive tried restoring my system, deleting/reinstalling drivers, modifying the registry and even third party freeware like AutoHotkey and Keytweak but nothing works
I just want to reset them back to being up and left (i use the directional keys, numberpad, right shift and right control for all my first person shooters and have to relearn with WSAD something I dont want to have to do)
I am even considering getting another keyboard but somehow I dont think that will solve the problem. I deleted the System32 entries for my keyboard and it stopped functioning altogether. I unplugged and plugged it in again and it set up the system32 (installed generic drivers there and then ) and the keyboard functions again but my problem remains

Please help me if you can. I dont know what else to try
Kind Regards and thanks in advance

A:HELP PLEASE Keyboard Directional Buttons changed

You messed everything up by adding in the Mods. Mods are never recommended for anything. You may have corrupted system files. Uninstall the program and all mods. Then check the keyboard. If you have a microsoft keyboard...get intellitype and it might fix the problem. Modding is always bad.

Dont diss the forum. Alot of issues are resolved but we need time to try and find a way to solve them.

I installed Avast AV when Norton expired. In order to activate the internet security stuff, I had to install the upgraded library file, blah, blah, blah. In order to do this, I had to show hidden folders. Having only recently begun my foray into Windows 7 (coming from XP), I was flying a bit blind. I must have hit the wrong thing. After I was able to see hidden folders, install the library file to Avast and continue on with the reboot, the desktop came up wiped clean of my documents/pics, etc and my C:\Users\Susan folder has disappeared and is now called Public. Next, I thought I may have switched my user from Susan to Public, but I have not.

What did I do? I am so confused and feeling like a complete novice at this point....

Hi all,

Thanks in anticipation for any replies that you all may provide.

I had someone else install windows on my laptop and they entered a windows username of 'sony' during windows registration.

I later went on to change the windows username to: 'Ishan'

However, when I went back to the 'Users' folder in C:\ , I noticed that the folder name was still called sony (which was the name entered during registering windows). I was wondering if there is a way to change it to my current windows user name.

Even when I install any new applications, the setup program asks me: "Install for all users or only for current user: sony (whereas the current user is actually Ishan Nagar).

Or is there any way I can register windows again without losting any data and settings I have on my computer?

Hope you all can help me with this issue.

Thanks and Regards,

A:Windows Account Name Changed, not Folder name in 'User'

Hello Ishan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The only way to change the C:\Users\(user-name) folder is to create a new administrator account, copy the contents of the old account's C:\Users\(user-name) folders into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user-name) folder, and delete the old account from within the new account after everthing checks out ok.

Hope this helps,

Hi everyone.

I have a question that I am sure would have been answered, but I could not find an answer while searching this great board, so I will ask.

I have set the "choose detail" view for a USB drive root folder that I would like to cascade down through all sub-folders only.
Note: Even though I have specified a USB drive here, I can't make it work on a fixed drive either.

I do not want my already previously set folder in other directories to change. I have looked through the folder view options but just can't seem to get it right. Can anyone help me out please.

Have Vista Home Premium on 2 computers. Working with music on desktop and want to see "bitrate" on the tracks in the music folder but it isn't listed as a detail option. It is on my laptop. Any suggestions on how to get it on the desktop?

A:Lost "bitrate" as detail folder option

Hi ManorMusic and welcome to Vista Forums

This problem occurs when the folder template is set incorrectly. Here is the Sample Music folder set as Documents. You can see that the items available for the columns in Detail view do not include Bit rate.

To correct this, right click on a blank section and select Customize This Folder...

Select the Customize tab, if not already selected. In the first drop down box under Use this folder type as a template: select Music Details and click OK.

Notice that the items available for the columns in Detail view now include Bit rate. Also notice that the toolbar now includes the Play all button, whereas previously it didn't.

Okay, I'm just nitpicking off the top of my head but here goes:

- Start Menu Button in Vista looks more detailed with shadows but the Windows 7 start menu button glows.

- Cannot free move show menu button and no option in Windows to add the old show menu button. (The are ways to add the old Vista show menu button on the internet, that's what I've done on my taskbar. I now have two show menu buttons, one on each bottom corner).

- No Windows Calender from Vista, not really a big feature but was good to have one nonetheless.

- Cannot disable Credentials Manger through Windows Services or Group Policy Editor without running into errors when opening Credentials Manager through Control Panel after disable.

- No old Vista style Sidebar Menu option in Windows, I understand this was not very popular and may have resulted to more memory usage but an option to enable or disable would have been nice.

- Desktop Icon for User Files look whack! I liked the way the User Files Icon looked in Vista way better but I understand they're keeping the Folder Icon Color sync (yellow) and simplifying it to look almost like XP.

- Still no detailed view option for built in disk defragmenter, not necessary but some of us would like have a visual progress of the on going results when defragmenting.

- No ribbon or mini ribbon for Notepad? This one kinda surprised me after looking at the new ribbons added for Paint and WordPad, how did they miss this one?

I have a problem that I can't seem to fix; my external (USB) HDD has first level root directory that turns into an executable file whenever I plug in my hdd. The icon still shows as a folder but it type is "application". What it does is it hides the original folders that actually have my files in, then makes a copy of the same folders except it's now an exe file rather than a folder. When I double click on it to open it, it takes about 8 seconds an then it opens in a new window - but it opened to the right (hidden) folder. Inside these hidden folders, everything looks alright.
I can delete these exe files and go and unhide the other folders and I'm good again till next time I plug in my hdd.

Hi, I used the search function and found others had the same problem but didnt seem like any of them were solved.

I was transferring some files from one external to another and was having problems with an error message popping up saying invalid parameter. which stopped the file transfer. So I decided to scan for errors etc. That took forever, and never finished, An error message popped up saying it was unable to scan the drive. I scanned it on an xp computer, when i scan it on my vista computer it finished fine and says there are no errors. But the file is still inaccessible.

After that many of my large folders became inaccessible and changed to a 32kb file.

Ive been using [email protected] FILE RECOVERY, And have recovered almost all the files i had on there. All but the one I really want back, photos from my trip to china. The folder contained jpgs and avi files.

I did a quick scan and a full scan, but I cannot seem to find the files anywhere. I'd appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

Hi there,

A few days ago, I noticed that the language my system folders were written it had been changed, somehow. More specifically, my "Shared Documents" folder changed its name to "Delte Dokumenter", which upon some research, revealed that it meant Shared Documents in Norwegian. My "Network Places" was changed to "Netværkssteder", which apparently is the Danish counterpart of Network Places. From what I can remember, I didn't do anything that would somehow change my system folder languages, and although i still have access to the folder's contents, it's kind of annoying to see it in another language. Most annoying of all, Network Places could easily be renamed, but Shared Documents cannot.

Any light that can be shed on this situation would be greatly appreciated.

hello all.

I have no idea how this happened, it happened after my computer had been on for hours.

But since about half an hour ago all my folder icons, eg: My Computer, My Documents C:\, and even the show desktop icon in the taskbar, have been replaced by the icon windows uses when it doesn't recognise the filetype.

even some stuff like ad aware and my GTA San Andreas Icon have been changed, but when i go to the properties and change icon manaully they come back to normal.
this doesn't work for the folders however.

i did notice that before i restarted my computer to try and fix this problem, that all icons were doing this, but now it seems to be just the folders.

anyone ever had this before and know how to fix it?

A:My folder icons have changed

Run the Error Check:

My Computer> right click on Local Drive- usually C> Properties> Tools> Error Check> check both boxes on the screen that comes up> OK.

Close the nag message and reboot. Let the process run. Computer will reboot when done.

See if this changes the icons back. If it does not, try doing a System Restore to date right before the icons changes.

And of course you have run all your security scans to make sure you don't have any malware.

does anyone know how to get the old icon back?

Ive tried right clicking and messing around in the customize tab, but it doesnt seem to have the same options as other folders.

A:Folder icon changed

Not sure what happened, but the Pictures folder has converted from a shell folder to a normal folder (which is more than just the loss of a pretty icon, but can affect how your programs work and how they access pictures). Here's the procedure to repair that problem: Personal User Shell Folders.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I had the same annoying problem using Vista. After I kept the main window maximized, it never happened again. Whoever facing this problem can try it. Quite simple.

I have 2 Hard Drives, C: and F:, and I have been using F: a lot recently (lots of files and downloads on there, C: is used mostly for programs). Today I went to my C: drive and I noticed that the main folder (i.e. C:\) has a musical note in the bottom-right, denoting the folder as a music folder.

I have no idea how this happened, and I don't know how to reset it to a basic documents folder. The obvious thing is to change it under Properties, but C:\ doesn't have the same properties window that most folders have, it has the Local Disk Properties, with drive information etc.

So I ask you: How do I change my C:\ folder back to it's default documents template?

in windows explorer, if we change view type to detail view, we can see file properties in columns, e.g. type, size, etc. etc. We can right click on any column heading and click more to add more columns.
I want to show more file properties which are not standard but custom file properties, which we can view after right click go to properties and in custom tab.
I have searched so much about this, but could not find any solution.

ANYONE that recognizes these symptons please help me IDENTIFY this issue!

I plugged a friends Seagate Expansion drive (SRD00F1) into my machine's usb port, Windows Vista started to load the drivers and then says success. I went to My Computer and the machine can't see the drive. After this I started to see the following occurring:

1) Explorer shows no filenames or folder names. If I click on the file to rename, the name is there, but when I close that, the name disappears.
2) All the normal column names in Explorer details view are gone, "Author" is the only one showing. All of the common ones are unavailable when I try to choose details by right clicking the column header, Filename, Size, Date Created/Accessed/Modified etc...
3) Many windows won't open, specifically Control Panel windows like "Backup and Restore Center", System, regedit.exe.
4) The "Start Search" feature of the Start Bar returns nothing. I found out later, No searches work.
5) In My computer the sizes of the drives and free space are in bytes, not KB or MB.
I've done a complete Virus scanning ticket with Broni:
I've tried running SFC many times, SFC says errors fixed, but the CBS.log is repeating the same errors every time.
Any assistance on identifying this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest you should do a system restore from just before you plugged that USB drive in.
