Vista connection isue

Q: Vista connection isue

Cant get internet connectivity. My NIS is working. Have a valid Ip but Wont connect in firefox or IE7. UNLESS i boot in safe mode. Tried wireless, local, and even my BB and all the same. Valid (but different IP) address and no online connectivity.

Preferred Solution: Vista connection isue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Vista connection isue

Most likely a 3rd party firewall (internet security) issue. If "NIS" is Norton Internet Security I'm guessing that you are right about it working. It's keeping you perfectly safe from the big bad internet.

I have installed a wireless card onto my PC, the card sees the network tells me I have connection, but IE does not connect.

I have cleared DNS cache, repaired IP/TCP Winsock. And

IPCONFIG shows that I have no default gateway.

Any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Suspect DNS Isue with Vista

Your Default Gateway is your Router. Unplug the power plug to the Modem and the Router. Plug the power into just the Modem (unless you have a modem/router combo) When all the lights come up, plug in the power to the Router (unless combo of course) Go to Start/Search and type inetcpl.cpl and press enter/Connections/LAN Settings. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked. Now go to Start/Search and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click the Local Area connection/Properties scroll down to Internet Protocol IPV4 (TCP-IP)/Properties. Make sure Obtain an IP Address and DNS Server Address Automatically are both checked. Now go to Start/Search and type CMD right click the Command Prompt link in the Search Results and choose Run As Administrator. IN the Command Prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. the IP Address changes to Now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew. Now type ipconfig /all. You should have a new IP address try it again. If you still cannot connect please include the text output of your ipconfig /all in your next post

Recently I recieved by mail my brother's laptop to fix, since I`m the "smart" guy inthe family everyone is pushing me with IT or Electronic choirs...anyway, it`s not why I`m here. The laptop has a broken screen, I tried to attach the laptop to another monitor via VGA but didn`t wor, no image at all. So I`m wondering if the mainboard is bustedm since I don`t know if I should order a new display for it or just toss it in the garbage can. The colored leds are on when I start it, no booting sound, but the HDD is working, so is the dvd-rw, I mean it takes commands, all the buttons work, I mean restart and power.is there a chance that the mainboard is bustend and I still have power on cpu/optical device/storage?

Thanks for the answer

My wife's laptop is acting crazy. It's been working fine, then the other night the screen starting blinking and became unreadable. It would just blink a ton and flash on and off. She took it in the next day to her work to the tech guys there and it worked fine. Today the same issue. I was able to get it to start in Safe Mode and it works just fine. Trying to start in regular mode it starts out just fine, then goes to blinking/flashing, etc.

Any ideas? Sorry I can't give more details, but that is as good a description as I can give!

Hello my name is Gringoyle

Let me start from the very begining, I was play Ever Quest 2 when my key board started acting up i found that it was my mouse, when my mouce was in movement the keyboard was inop so if was to use the (W,A,D,S) keys to navigate than use the mouce to move the cursor i would stop movment.

So I decided to test the mouce in safe mode, I and made a big mistake by using msconfig to do so. Well it started an endless loop of chrashing when windows would boot causing the loop to start over. I can however use F8 still which i did to to try and repair my system, it recommended that I use the recovery, that had failed. I than used the F8 last knowen good configuration option to start windows and I am running again, I than when to change the settings in msconfig i had made but i am unable to. When in msconfig under the general tab the "Selective Startup" is selected, under the boot tab the options are normal, safe mode is not selected. However if I select the Normal Startup option under the general tab the safe mode box becomes check under the boot tab and if I uncheck the safe boot box, the Selective Startup option is than selected again under the general tab.

And my dang mouce is still causing the keyboard to be inop when in use.

Thank for any advice you fellas can offer me,

I am seeking advice here to solve a problem with internet connection on my laptop.
The laptop (Thinkpad X61 running 32 bit Vista) seems to be ok to connect to my router, which is connected to a cable modem. Internet is also connected on the base level (more details below). However Internet Explorer (or firefox, opera) cannot find any web page, and Mozilla Thunderbird email program cannot connect to email server.
I am decently ok with computers, so I have run some checks myself. This is not a problem of router or cable modem, as my other computers can access internet through the same router and modem. Also, the laptop gets an IP address from the router and can connect to shared resources on other computers within the same network.
The laptop also finds outside addresses and get a response when I run ping command, e.g. ping www.google.com or ping www.yahoo.com, suggesting that the connection to DNS server is fine at the base level.
I was suspecting that windows firewall, my Symantec antivirus or VPN is creating the problem. But the problem persists after I disabled firewall and the antivirus software and deleted VPN connection.
One important thing to mention is that this problem starts when after a software install, which I removed afterwards. I tried to run netsh reset by "netsh winsock reset catalog", "netsh int ipv4 reset myreset.log" and "netsh int ipv6 reset myreset.log" and restart. Still does not work.

A:Remote desktop connection from Vista 64 to Vista 32

If I may, assume these 2 computers are on a network. If so you can try the following.

1. On Vista Bis32 go to Control Panel > Select Classic View on the left side of the screen > System icon > Advanced System Settings> Remote Tab and select the "allow connection". Pick which one suits your needs. Then click Select Users button and add your name in the list so it know to allow you.

2. On the Vista 64 bit start the RDP session and then click the options button and adjust that as you like. I usually click on Advanced Tab then under the Authentication options I usualy select "always connect even if authentication fails".

I need to read up more on RDP that comes with Vista to better answer RDP questions

Hope this helps!

I have two computers, an older laptop running xp and a desktop running vista.

My wife has to have a vpn connection for her job and I have been unable to connect on our Vista computer, only the XP will connect.

I have mirrored the properties for the Vista computer from the XP set up and still can't connect. The only thing that I noticed was different in the setup on Vista was a security option in the properties giving the option between providing a preshared key or validating by using certificates. XP only gave the option of a preshared key ( which the VPN doesn't have). Vista will not allow me to select the preshared key option and leave the field blank.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to connect to this VPN from vista? I'm sure it's just some setting that I haven't seen yet, but I have spent many hours beating my head against the wall with this.

Hello, I hope somebody can help, I've had my vista machine for about 2 months now and finally got most of the teething problems ironed out, until I was at work and tried to connect to a network storage disk, the computer froze when I tried to create a new folder in the network storage disk, and wouldn't let me close the window or computer, so I had to force the computer to shut down. When I re-started it would only allow local only access on the network at work, when I got home, it would only allow local only access, I tried to manually assign an IP address and it showed internet access was available but when I tried to go online it wouldn't display a webpage, after about ten minutes it returned to local only access again, and now occasionally flips between the two although I can't access any web pages at all. There is no problems with my network because my other XP machine works fine and I'm sure the equipment is fine because it used to work perfectly until I got locked up in the network storage disk at work. I've tried uninstalling the wireless network adapter and re-installing but no joy. `I also can't connect via LAN cable, that just shows up as unidentified network and won't let me go any further, what could be the problem? I'm really hoping there is a fix and I don't have to restore to factory settings.

Any help would be much appreciated

Alright, this is a rather odd problem. On my taskbar, where the two computer screens represent your internet connection, it shows the red X, meaning that I have no internet connection. However, I can connect to the internet just fine, using browsers, Instant messengers etc. However, when this happens, it makes it so that I cant use certain programs (Like opening up Counterstrike) This has happened before, right after I did a windows update. After the first time, I disabled windows update so I could install the updates that I wanted, but this time, it happened out of the blue. Does anyone know what might cause this or how I could fix it?

A:Vista Shows That I Have No Connection

Sorry for wasting your time, I found a fix.

If you were having this problem, here's what to do:

1. Go to Start > Run > cmd

2. Copy/paste the following line and hit your Enter key:

Net localgroup Administrators localservice /add

3. Reboot your computer.

There you go, that should do the trick.

I know a few people have had this problem but not seen an answer and why this is occuring.

When you are on vista (ultimate) casually doing anything random, after maybe an hour or a few days the DNS server error comes up. Ive tried repairing the connection but still nothing.

I am running off a linksys wireless router, on virginmedia cable modem. the other laptops connection still works when the other drops out so i know its not the router or modem problem.

The only way i am aware of (which is seriously inconvienient) is to reboot the PC. grrr

I'm using a mobile broadband dongle for internet access on my laptop (running Vista). I'm trying to connect both my PS3 and my HTC Desire HD to the laptop via wi-fi so I can share the laptop's internet connection with them, and I set up an ad hoc wi-fi connection on the laptop in an attempt to do this. For some reason, I can't get either the PS3 or the Desire to pick up the wi-fi; it just shows up as "Waiting for other users to connect" on the laptop.

The odd thing is that the laptop's wi-fi is definitely working - I can set up the Desire as a wi-fi hotspot and connect both the laptop and the PS3 to it to share the Desire's internet connection, but I don't want to do it that way round as I'll very quickly eat up the 500MB monthly data allowance on my phone. I don't want to put the dongle SIM in my Desire because from what I've read it seems likely that the different APN will lead to extortionate data charges.

I've also tried to connect the PS3 to the laptop using an ethernet cable, but I've run into unexpected problems doing that as well (which could be another thread on its own!).

I realise that buying a router would be the simplest solution - in fact I already have one elsewhere - but my current situation is temporary and I'd like to make do with what I have with me if possible!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've searched existing threads but none seems to have covered this par... Read more

A:Ad hoc wi-fi connection won't work on Vista

I trust that you are trying the ad-hoc wireless w/o encryption until you get it working.

You don't have a non-Windows firewall or security suite blocking, right? Initially the ad-hoc network will be using 169.254.x.y and then after ICS is enabled 192.168.0.x.

Can you detect the network on either of the other devices? If so, what happens when you try to connect to it?

A friends Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Vista Home Premium. The machine has a Dell WLAN card installed and functioning. When I open Network Connections, the wireless connection indicates "Not Connected". When I attempt connecting, the router is present with full signal. The systray icon also indicates full signal. When I right-click and select "Connect", I get a window showing the anticipated secure-encrypted router with full signal. When I select that signal and again click "Connect", I get a window asking for user name, password and Domain??? Tried to connect manually with same result. I found one post on the Dell help site referring to Bluetooth collaboration negatively affecting the internet connection. Bluetooth IS enabled, but haven't had a chance to try disabling it to see if that changes anything.

I expected to have to simply enter the 10 digit access key and connect the way it works with my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop running XP Home. Linksys tech support says I need to reconfigure the router. I view that as last resort. There are 4 other computers connected to this wireless network in addition to printers and FAX machine and all work just fine. This is the only machine running Vista.

Any ideas appreciated.

Decide whether you want the PCs to be assigned AutoConfig IP addresses or whether to assign static IPs. If the latter, do it.

I am trying to network my 32 bit Vista laptop and 64 bit Win 7 desktop.

Win 7 desktop can see and connect to Vista laptop and I have set up folder synching using Allway Sync.

My Vista laptop can see my Win 7 desktop in network ?full map? and I can ping the desktop from the laptop. But it will not let me open files or folders on the desktop. It asks for the username and password, which I enter correctly but I get the response the username and/or password is incorrect.

The funny thing is, I had this setup before, but had the reverse issue where the laptop would connect to the desktop but the desktop would not connect to the laptop with the same symptoms.

Am I missing something simple? I have ?googled? for a solution, but lots of people have similar problems with no solution and the advice is generally to do what I have already done.

I suspect you have two problems.. First you are probably running homegroup. Since you have vista and win 7 you should be running "workgroup", second Joe on vista is not the same as joe on win 7. So user name Joe with password on one must be set up as machine name\joe\password.

I found this little program useful in “optimizing” my connection speed for my PC. You must set your PC and this program does it. It works with ANY version of windows. I used it for my XP and I’m now using it for Vista. You might as well get the connection speed you are paying for as far as “high speed internet service” goes. Here is the link for the TCP Optimizer:

BEFORE you run the TCP Optimizer program try this speed test FIRST. Then run it AFTER you run the Optimizer (SpeakEasy Flash will not load with Vista 64 bit so use your 32 bit I.E.) SpeakEasy Speed Test:

A:Your Vista PC Connection Speed

That was interesting. I must have a very honest and good ISP. The program actually slowed down my upload and download speeds. I must say that I have played with some of the settings over the past few months.

Hi, I am running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. My connection to the router is by a Powerline extender (PE). The router/modem has been up for 186 hours. I lose connection between my comp and the PE approx two or three times per day. The PE is directly in front of me and about two feet from my eyes so I can see the three green lights at a glance. The Network Icon in the Task bar loses the blue circle but the three lights on the PE stay on. The lost connection lasts for approx one minute.
My wife who is on the net approx 16 hours a day ( an illness keeps her in bed ) sits about two feet from the router and when my connection drops I ask her if the router is down, she always answers, it's up.
I seem to remember reading previously that Vista does this and there is a remedy. I would appreciate any help on this matter.

Finally found out that it is something to do with my home wiring. Called Netgear and got them to replace the extenders. Same result. so can only be the wiring. Would like to say am very impressed with the Netgear support, first class.

I have Vista home premium on my wife's pc and just did a system recovery because she had viruses and was having problems getting onto the internet. Since completing the recovery the PC connect to my router fine but says "local only". I have a PC with windows 7 and a couple xboxs and they aren't having any problems at all. If i connect the Vista PC directly to the router it works fine, just not wirelessly. If I restart the PC i have internet for about 2 minutes then back to local only.

I have tried:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Go to Start and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Go to Start and type in "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

but it didn't work for me. Can somebody please help me before i go crazy????

Have you tried going through the steps of creating your network connection again?

If not in your control panel go to network and create a new wireless network. Use your router information in the "Enter information for wireless network" page. Click next and see if it connects that way.

Also just a tip, look on the laptop for the radio switch. It is a switch that has a picture of an antenna, if it is off your computer won't connect to the Internet.

I have an Acer laptop. It was working fine then suddenly it decided to drop the network connection. The NIC works fine and I can't see any problems but it will not connect. So I am trying to reconfigure the network connection but it keeps defaulting to PPPoE via a dial up connection. I've tried uninstalling the NIC, I have the modem and the wireless card disabled but it still tries this. What is with Vista that you can't simply setup a network like you used to under XP? Anyone got any ideas?

A relative has bought a new Cannon printer but cannot install it on new machine running Vista Home. The installation program halts at the point where the guide instructs the user to "Now attach the printer to the PC" with the USB connecting lead. It goes no further. Although Vista signals printer installed there is in fact no new program installed!

This new printer will work on other machines running XP.

It also seems that his USB memory stick is also not recognised by this new machine. This same memory stick works immediately on any other machine running older windows setups.

Does anyone recognise this problem and can advise?

Have you visited the Canon website and checked if it is compatible with Vista?

I have just installed a new Vista machine for a collegue and his, relatively new, printer will not work with Vista. (works with XP though

My perfectly good scanner is not compatible with Vista...But is a cracker with XP!

I cannot give any advice re the USB stick. Sorry,
Since I wrote the above, I had a thought that both items run on the USB bus. You can check if the USB part of the computer is set up properly by going to:
Start > Control Panel > Device Manager. Scroll down to the bottom and see if there are any yellow question marks next to any of the 'USB' section.
]If there are, this would indicate a USB fault. I take it that your computer is new. In that case I would return it to the suppliers and complain etc...

I've had my laptop for a few months now and had only used the ethernet about 2 times to connect to the internet. The third time I went to connect using the ethernet, I got a message that said "unidentified network". I ignored it thinking that it was just a problem with the cable connection. Tried two weeks later and had the same problem. Contacted the cable company and they told me that my laptop was not sending out it's ip or something of the sort. Contacted HP and they had me reinstall my drivers for the network card. Still nothing though. I've searched all over the internet for a solution but there are plenty of theories and no hard facts. I saw some similar posts but some weren't finished and they seemed slightly different from my situation. PLEASE HELP! It might take me a while to respond because I don't normaly have access to the internet, my wireless is fine though.
