XP Media Center Edition Machine freezes randomly - removed IE freezes less frequently

Q: XP Media Center Edition Machine freezes randomly - removed IE freezes less frequently

Have no clue as to patterns - genuinely seems random. Previously had IE6 latest service pack loaded and it would freeze on average - 6 times a day - with no *.dmp file even though the Drwatson registry key was installed! Switched to Firefox, and immediate improvement - it now freezes randomly once every 2 days or so - often occurs when zonealarm receive green lights are on, and sometimes when many apps are open at once. Also no blue BSD would show - it just stops working - no mouse response, no keyboard response - not even Ctrl Alt Del - wait 5 minutes still nothing. Any help would be appreciated - I am pulling my beard out.DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by 1st at 14:16:26.79 on Wed 02/03/2010Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.5512Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2039.1003 [GMT -5:00]AV: ZoneAlarm Security Suite Antivirus *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {5D467B10-818C-4CAB-9FF7-6893B5B8F3CF}FW: ZoneAlarm Security Suite Firewall *enabled* {829BDA32-94B3-44F4-8446-F8FCFF809F8B}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcssvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exeC:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\IswSvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exesvchost.exeC:\XAMPP\xampp\apache\bin\httpd.exeC:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exeC:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEC:\XAMPP\xampp\mysql\bin\mysqld.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\tcpsvcs.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\snmp.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvcC:\XAMPP\xampp\apache\bin\httpd.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exeC:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\ForceField.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\RegCure\RegCure.exeC:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exeC:\Program Files\EeePC\ACPI\AsTray.exeC:\Program Files\EeePC\ACPI\AsAcpiSvr.exeC:\Program Files\EeePC\ACPI\AsEPCMon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxext.exeC:\Program Files\Elantech\ETDCtrl.exeC:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxsrvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehmsas.exeC:\Program Files\Spybot - Preferred Solution: XP Media Center Edition Machine freezes randomly - removed IE freezes less frequently

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

The disk is brand new. The computer crashed, and this was an attempt to restore it. It booted the setup from the disk, I was able to use the setup to repair, when it got to the "Installing Windows" stage it crashed giving me the above error when i tried ejecting the cd from the tray. Tried restarting the setup from the cd, I deleted the single partition and reformatted it, and tried running setup again, it went to the same point and froze again, giving the same error message.

error: sxs.dll: syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\I386\asms\10\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.

Please, i need this to be working by tomorrow if possible...does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi everyone

Recently my computer has started to completely freeze, with everything except the audio (but including the cursor!) being completely frozen. It seems to happen mostly when playing games, but has recently also happened when the only programme I'm running is Google Chrome. I've checked my system for viruses, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Hope someone here can help!

I've run the SF Diagnostics Tool and attached the .zip file to this post.

You need to see what temperatures you're hitting.

Download coretemp or hwmonitor and see how hot things get.

@ eviltoaster : nothing in the informations that were given allows to say that this is virus related and tools like combofix shouldn't be used without proper guidance. Also deleting the process that's taking the cpu usage without investigating its purpose first isn't a good advice.

@ bengoodall :

What's the brand and model of your computer ?

Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. Check the application and system sections for errors happening at the time of the freezes. If there are any errors double-click them, click once on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) then right-click => paste it here.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. Answer y when prompted to schedule the scan for next startup and restart the computer. It'll take some time. Once you're back within windows go to the event viewer (eventvwr.msc) and give us the information that's in the latest winlogon event (in the application section).

Go to start => run and type devmgmt.msc. Go to view and check "show hidden devices". Report if there are any tagged devices in the list (red or yellow icon).

What antivirus, firewall and other security programs do you use ?

Enter the BIOS at startup (look for some "press xx to enter setup" message), find the hardware monitor or pc health screen and report the temps, fan speeds and voltages you'll see there.

Because I do not want to lose the place where I am, I quickly try to open another e page to get back to my search and start again but the home page doen not completely open. I try again to open another e page, and then another until finally my home page opens and then I will accomplish a little bit of work until out of the blue, I freeze again. Sometimes I have as many as 20 enternet explorer pages, all frozen, open and just sitting there. please help me so I can just find a job and get back to work!!! Over the past couple of years, my Vista media PC would randomly freeze, with no mouse/keyboard function. My only option would be to do a hard shutdown/reboot. This has persisted over 3 different video cards and numerous driver updates. The problem is the frequency has picked up in the last few months. The most obvious source of the problem, I guess, would be overheating. I have taken steps to correct this, and there have been no freezes since then, so hopefully that was it. However, in the course of troubleshooting, another issue came up: I was told the trouble might stem from RAID drivers (I do not use RAID), so to change the SATA setting in the BIOS from "RAID" to "IDE." Doing so, caused my machine to BSOD with the following STOP: 0x0000007B (0x80599BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). This happens also when trying to boot into SafeMode. When I change the BIOS SATA setting back to "RAID" the machine boots normally. So because of all these symptoms, I was told to do a rootkit check in order to (hopefully) rule that out.BTW, I notice on the DDS log that it shows NIS being "enabled." I no longer have NIS installed (uninstalled about 3 years ago).EDIT: I have Virtual Clone Drive installed. I ran Defogger. Recently I have been getting random freezes in 10. They do not appear to be triggered by any sort of error, and I don't appear to be overheating or running out of power, which are 2 common causes of check exceptions, leaving me with some sort of driver error. Here's the debug file:

So i just got my computer a week ago and its already having problems. I bought a Gateway PC with Media center already installed in it. So i watch tv on media center and after awhile it starts to freeze up. I tried closing all my programs to restoring my computer to orginal factor settings and check all my cords. I called Gateway but they werent much help. They did tell me that I may have to get more RAM (I have a 1 gig already) or ask my cable company to speed up the connection (which will probably cost.) Im guessing microsoft and gateway goof this one up. So anybody help will be greatly apperciated.

Hello everyone!
I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, but my issue does deal largely with my display. If so I apologize in advance and ask to be directed to the correct forum.

I have searched the boards for similar issues and I have tried their approaches but it has not resolved my issue.

I am experiencing issues with my ASUS graphics card and my Intel HD display driver. Whenever I am playing a videogame or doing something that is graphics intensive, my display freezes and I either have to reboot my machine or sometimes the display unfreezes and I am allowed to resume my activities.

I originally had graphics driver 295.73, but I upgraded to version 296.10 when it came out.

I still had the same issue when I upgraded my driver so I rolled back to version 295.73. I kept bouncing back and forth between the two drivers and I even tried going into safe mode to install the drivers.

Twice while I was using AutoCAD and playing a videogame, the display became distorted and showed pixelated colors.
I installed the 301.24 driver when it came out on May 22nd, but the problem occurred again while I was playing a game and while I was in AutoCAD.

In the rare instances that my display froze and unfroze, I received a windows notification from the windows event log stating that my driver 295.73, 296.10, or 301.24 failed.

I have performed numerous diagnostics and stress tests using Ultimate Boot CD.

My memory tests have checked out fine and so hav... Read more

First off, if I have posted this in the wrong forum I apologize. This seemed however, to be the most likely place to ask such a question. Second, my problem:

Over the past couple months, I've noticed that my Media Center will freeze when I'm trying to watch a program. I'll get about 75% of the way through the show when the entire MC will lock up on me. The computer itself is fine as I'll be able to shut down Media Center via the task manager. It just really grinds my gears because I'll be in the middle of a show and I can't finish watching. If I restart Media Center and attempt to fast forward to the point where the program locked up, it'll just lock up again. I will not be able to access those final few minutes (10-15 minutes) of a TV show. I don't receive any specific errors from Media Center, I just get a blue screen that says 'No TV signal'. This can't be right because I'd been watching the show all along. I don't have any issues with live TV, it's just recorded programs.

I'm sorry I can't give much more information than that- if you need to know something more, feel free to ask me. For the record I run: Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit), 400 gb Hard Drive (250+ gb free), 2 gb memory, no spyware/adware/malware or viruses.. my system is astonishingly clean. All my Windows Updates are up to date, my MC software and codecs are up to date.. I can't understand why this is happening. Any he... Read more

Dell Support has been trying to help resolve a freezing problem with Windows Media Center TV 2005. The window freezes when trying to set up the guide as soon as I choose my provider. A computer restart is required in order to do anything in the Settings area then. Next time I go in, it says the guide is downloading, but the window freezes. It also freezes when setting up a manual TV recording. I am able to watch TV, but cannot fast forward or rewind. Sometimes when I click on the choice of Live TV or Recorded TV it shows the spinning circle, but never loads. These are the attempts to resolve so far:
Reformat of hard drive
Reinstallation of XP/Windows Media Center
Updating of video drivers
Updating of Codecs
Numerous tests for hardware which all passed
TV tuner card replaced

I'm sure there are many other things, but it's been going on for over 3 months with no resolution.

This is the event viewer when the app hangs:

After switching back to the original HD4870 and doing a fresh install of Win7 on a new hard drive the computer still freezes during video playback. Just installed Win8 Pro and bought the Media Center add on. I run an i7-3770k, 16Gb ram, GTX 780 3Gb video card and have 2 25" monitors. Now when I play a game on display 1 and have Media Center running Live TV on display 2, Media Center stutters, freezes. As soon as I close the game on display 1, Media Center runs fine.

Now I did this all the time under Windows 7 and had NO ISSUES AT ALL running a game on one screen and MC running live TV on the other. Same driver, 320.11

Any reason MC acts this way under Win8?

A:Win8 Pro, media center, stutters freezes

If I were you I'd install Windows 7 on another partition, and run the game and TV, and try to find out what resources are being used. The thing to do is to try to find out what is different with this setup compared to Windows 7, I mean, under Metro and all that guck, the underlying OS is still pretty similar to Windows 7.

Does Media Center show up as two different instances on each display?

The Game is running through the Extender, and you have a second instance of WMC for the Live TV? I've never heard of anyone doing this. If it was running in Windows 7 it should run in 8.

There should also be some configurations on your Video Cards, how are they connected, with SLI?

I hope there is someone else more familiar with this kind of setup, anyone?

A friend of mine recently purchased an HP Media Center PC with a 3ghz P4 and 1024 mb of ram. It ran fine, except for the standard crap that HP preloads with everything!

The problem is, he recently got DSL, and whenever his browser is opened, the computer will freeze. It will connect to the internet through the DSL line, and it won't freeze until IE is opened. The entire computer freezes and must be hard booted.

So far, I have reinstalled windows(and all the other stuff that HP makes a part of recovery) Tried deleting non-essential programs, I loaded firefox, tried to browse through that, and it still froze. I tried to connect with my laptop and it worked fine, so we know it's not the DSL. And also I loaded gentoo linux onto his computer, off of the live CD and it can connect to the internet just fine through it's links browser. So I am at the conclusion that the problem lies within windows itself, or the Proprietary HP software that is bundled with the computer. I was thinking about trying to load windows from a standard windows XP disk instead of using the HP built in recovery function, but I don't know if it will help. Any input on this will be greatly appreciated.

A:HP Media Center PC Freezes on browser startup

Please post back the version of IE you're using (can be found at Help menu > About IE), and also right-click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer and post back all errors in the three subcategories (Application, Security, System) - the errors are marked with a white X on a red circle.

As always, issues that involve web browsing and hanging can very well have the word "malware" written all over them, so I'd additionally suggest you to run the 5 Step Process.

Moreover, please check out this: Internet Explorer Appears to Stop Responding When You Start It

Finally, it could be an issue with the internet connection settings that you're using. If you're not sure about it, post back for further clarifications and guidance.

I have searched and been unable to find any information about this problem.

When going to the Media Center I sometimes notice that my recording has been broken into two different files.

for example:
When trying to record movie XYZ(120 minute run time) off a cable channel
There will be two(or three recorded files) files labeled XYZ. One with a 20 minute run time and one with a 100 minute run time.(time amounts may vary)

Often when I try to play these broken files(Many times while trying to play a complete file too) my Media Center freezes up and I have to go to the task manager to shut Media Center down. If I try to watch the file again the player will freeze up again.(each time the file is played.)

What causes this and is there any way to correct the problem or repair the files?

Thank you in advance for any help you may give. (And Merry Christmas)

Hello everyone. So I just got the Xbox 360 COD special edition. I'm checking out all my features on the Xbox. There's an option to somehow connect your computer to your Xbox. The requirement is to go through the Media Center. Well, first time starting up the Media Center on my computer, and I'm not able to get the Media Center to open. I receive an error right on startup of the program. It ends up generating a crash report, and closes. I've take 2 screenshots of the error. The first screenshot is of the first error that comes up upon opening the Media Center. The second screenshot is of another error I get when I choose to cancel instead of clicking ok on the first error. I thought getting the most information to you guys would be the best.

I run Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2005 Service Pack 3.

Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks a lot

This is a strange and extremely irritating problem I've come across just yesterday. I've spent hours and hours trying to figure out the issue with all of my ability and knowledge, but I still can't figure out what's going on. Basically, pretty much everything will stop working (including the desktop and taskbar and all applications and windows I have up) and freeze (not respond) for around 5 minutes or so and then will unfreeze. This happens way too often and is very annoying. I'd provide specs but right now I'm on my laptop trying to figure things out. It runs on Windows 7 64-bit. It's getting to the point where I can't stand using the PC anymore. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Registry cleanup and fixed issues with CCleaner
- System Restore
- Updating video drivers (except it didn't need updating)
- The repair sequence during startup.
- Scanning for Malware and Viruses, both my programs not coming up with anything after a full scan.
- Defragmentation

Thanks for your guys' help!

A:Everything freezes way too frequently.

Bring up the Task Manager, leave it on the side as you work, and see what process is eating up cpu time when it freezes.

Hello everybody -

I'm sorry to re-post the topic of an expired thread that was obviously so useful about 8 months ago, but I am having the same problem as all the folks have mentioned on this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/687568-vista-freezes-very-frequently.html about Vista freezing over and over again on an eMachines T5230 (yeah, I know it's cheap - it's my parents' machine). It's just so frustrating. Like others in the thread, I too was experiencing quite a few minute-long freezes that still "remembered" all the mouse-clicks - but the freezes were terribly annoying. So, as suggested by numerous folks - especially clueless eMachines tech support, I installed an extra 1G of RAM and the freezing only got worse. The system now runs very fast, and then freezes for 2-3 minutes at a time. One person at the end of the thread changed out the video card and put in an ATI PCI express video card and says everything works now. I don't know what the other people did. My main question is to ask if changing out the video card indeed sounds like a reasonable solution for most/all of these systems having the same problem, or does this sound like maybe it just worked in his specific case? Also, have you all heard anything new along these lines since his post in April?

Thanks for the awesome service you provide here, and at least I feel like I can share my pain with others. I will never hesitate again to return a PC to the store if ... Read more

A:Vista Freezes Frequently

i wouldnt blame my video card unless i had a specific reason to.
Open your task manager and keep it minimized and when it freezes see if the little graph is pegged out.
Also with vista always check your ram first
download and burn an iso of memtest boot it and run your ram for a good 30 minutes if it shows an error then there is the problem.

Alright, so let me explain this the best way I can.
This has happened on Windows 7 and Windows 8, and I recently went back to Windows 8, and what do you know? The same issue regardless....

Usually when I am playing a game (And I don't even have to be playing a game) such of Spacebase, Dayz, Far cry, Second Life, Gary's Mod (Anything really) windows explorer will freeze, I can move my mouse and such, but you are not able to click anything, or close anything. Screen flicks back and comes back to normal again, usually on Windows 7 it would tell me it recovered from a graphics driver crash, but Windows 8 doesn't do that, it just does what it did on Windows 7, but doesn't tell me it recovered, and this happens SEVERAL TIMES, it never stops...Or sometimes the game will stop responding, but if you're browsing the web, you can open tabs, but you cannot close, or browse anything in that tab until the game responds again, and the final thing, least on Windows 7, has not happened on Windows 8 yet, instead of those issues, it will just blue screen on me and come right back. I believe it's driver related, but I cannot fix it, I have tried and tried, and I have just about gave up. Maybe someone here can guide me. Also I have tried the current, and beta graphics drivers, doing full wipes before each one, and with no avail...

I would try a hardware monitor utility that can display the GPU temp. Se if it's out of normal range. Also you can try turning hw accel off in browsers. See if the crashing stops. Sometimes those GPU fans crap out, if it has one.

Not sure why, but for the past few weeks, I haven't been able to use my computer for more than a couple hours before it just freezes up; I wasn't even aware this problem still existed...
I've looked around in other forums and done everything I've seen suggested, including a virus scan, malware scan, defragmenting the hard drive, cleaning up registry errors and deleting temorary files.

Here are my system specs:

ASUS M3N78-VM Mobo
Windows 7, 64-bit
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Processor (2.8 Ghz, quad core)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 video card
2 500g hard drives
DDR2, 6 gigs of system memory
450W power supply

I've had it for a few months, this just started happening a couple weeks ago.
Any help as to what might be going on, or how I might find out whats going on?

EDIT: the registry cleaner I used was Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

A:Computer freezes very frequently

I suggest installing a fresh copy of Windows if that is possible. You said you've tried everything else that you posted, and that's really what I would've told you to do. Sense it's a fairly new computer, hardware shouldn't be the issue. Try installing a fresh copy of Win 7.

A:PC frequently restarts & freezes...

Hello! Let's cleanup your pc and see if that helps any.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

I see that you have ewdio installed.
Please update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being inst... Read more

I just updated my Win 7 Pro from IE 10 to IE 11. Now I have frequent problems every browsing session where the IE 11 browser freezes up after I have opened and closed tabs a few times. It just stops responding, and sometimes if I wait a few minutes it will suddenly unfreeze but then freeze again after a minute or two of browsing using tabs.

When it locks up, I cannot even close it except with Task Manager, and sometimes that even stops working (CtlAltDel does nothing) and I have to use the Start menu to Resart the PC. I never had these problems with IE 10.

I recall installing IE 11 a long while back when IE 11 was first released, had the same problem, and uninstalled it via a sys restore and reverted to IE 10, ran fine. Am I going to have to do this again? Help, please...

Try In-Private browsing to test and or No add-ons mode,
Stopped working is common for either a bad add-on or a security suite that is blocking if you use it's toolbar or password saving features/ lastpass....
