What is so special about an Inspiron 17R 7720 "Special Edition"?

Q: What is so special about an Inspiron 17R 7720 "Special Edition"?

I have two Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 laptops. My "old" one I bought direct from Dell in 2012, the "new" one, advertised as an "Inspiron 17R 7720 Special Edition", I bought on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. I still have the original paperwork for the old one from when I purchased it from Dell and there is no mention of "Special Edition" in the paperwork. Both are identified only as "Inspiron 7720" on the label on the underside of the computer, and there are no "Special Edition" markings or labeling anywhere on the new computer.
Hardware is pretty much identical, 1TB Samsung ST1000LM024HN HDDs, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000/Nvidia GeForce GT 650M Video/3D graphics, Backlit Keyboard on both. The only hardware differences are the old computer has an Intel Core i7-3610QM processor (specified by me when I ordered the computer) and a 32GB mSATA SSD while the new computer has an Intel Core i5-3210M processor and no mSATA SSD.
So what makes the "Special Edition" so special? Is there REALLY anything different about "Special Edition" computers, or was that just some sort of marketing hype?

Preferred Solution: What is so special about an Inspiron 17R 7720 "Special Edition"?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The mSATA cache drive was one of the differentiators. When that system was built, SSDs were appreciably more expensive than they are now.

Can the laptop handle 2 8GB dimms for a total of 16 instead of how it is sold with 8. The laptop would be viable but the memory is holding it back.

A:Inspiron 17R Special Edition Memory

Welcome to the community.
Well, Dell does not recommend 2 sticks of 8 GB RAM each installed in this system as that may cause a motherboard failure. However installing 8 GB, 1600 MHZ chips may or may not work.
Let me know in case there are any other concerns. Glad to be of assistance.

I have inspiron 15r se with 1TB HDD.
I would like to add a mSATA card to my system to be able to use IRST.
Is it possible now?
I am skeptic because I have read online that systems which were not shipped with 32 GB mSATA card, doesn't have mSATA port for later installation.
When I purchased the system at that time dell had the option for adding 32 GB mSATA card in the customization section, but now dell has removed the whole customization section from the website. And in the pre-configured models, there is no option for mSATA card.
Please clear this doubt and if possible post the pictures of the system and the daughter board where mSATA card can be installed.
If you need any further details regarding my system configuration, feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance

A:Installing mSATA card on Inspiron 15R special edition (7520)

Hey everyone!
All those who are willing to buy Dell Inspiron 15R special edition (7520), and would like to upgrade the system with mSATA card manually after making the purchase, must know that there are  two different configurations with which the system is being sold. While on one of these configuration there is an mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number N7JHH) in the system. Whereas on the other configuration there is no mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number MRDMM) present in the system.
Most of the Dell representatives don't have any information in this regard and they are openly stating that mSATA cards are compatible with 7520. Please don't go by their words and ask them specifically if the above mentioned daughter board is present in the system or not. Only a very few of them are stating  "If the system was not ordered with mSATA  card most likely your system daughter board will not have the mSATA slot", that too after days of inquiry.
If you are hoping to upgrade the system with mSATA card, then my advice to you would be to make a prudent decision before purchasing.

Hi all - quick question. I have a Inspiron 13 7000 special edition. So far, I love it. The only nit that I have with it is that frequently, when waking up from sleep - even if I just have the lid closed for 5 minutes - it takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute to wake from sleep.
It's pretty annoying and if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Well to start with the problem arose 2 days earlier when I was playing League of Legends as usual. The laptop crashed to black screen and started rebooting but was presented by a blue screen error Vedio TDR Failure(atikmpag.sys) and it would keep restarting.
In case you are wondering, no new drivers or windows updates were installed that day or the week.I have been using the same drivers with no issues for an year or so.I didnt have the recovery disk with me,so I downloaded the same version of OS 8.1 single language from the windows website into usb drive and successfully booted into safe mode with it.Then, I proceeded to uninstall AMD drivers and all its components and voila,my computer could boot normally again.Hence, the problem is AMD.Now, I tried installing the original AMD drivers from the dell support website , which were successful except AMD DISPLAY DRIVER,which brings me the root cause. The log just says AMD DISPLAY DRIVER status failure.Again, I uninstalled in safe mode and tried installing from AMD website(the updated ones),which installed successfully. The laptop rebooted but after 4-5 minutes, again another blue screen error popped up saying THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER and restarted again and again.Currently, am ru... Hi everyone - periodically, while using the new Edge browser on Windows 10 - my laptop will freeze up and give a "Graphics Driver has stopped responding and recovered message".  It happens on certain websites more than others (Facebook, CNN, a couple of forums that I frequent)
I haven't noticed the issue in other browsers, although I really like Edge and prefer to use it - especially in tablet mode.
I can make the problem go away by going to Internet Options -> Advanced -> Accelerated Graphics and *Un* checking "Use Software Rendering Instead of GPU Rendering".
Doing this, however, obviously results in choppier page loads and sluggish performance while running Video or games.
Is there an update or hotfix that can fix this? My graphics drivers are all updated to the latest provided on Dell's website.
I will post an event log entry the next time it happens, but just putting this out there in the mean time.

Hi guys,

Long story short broke bootloader and mbr, but got it sorted eventually after a couple of hours reading and playing with various tools. Machine boots back into XP fine with no user interaction. However when logging in logs me straight back out. I suspect this is because my D: partition (separate hdd) seems to have lost its allocation while I've been playing with the problem (probably should have physically disconnected it first. Lesson learnt) This drive however, as well as storing about 1TB of data (of which I haven't even had time to fully back up before problem occured! I know, it's ultimately my fault) was the location for some of XP's special folders, specifically My Documents; My Music; My Pictures (I think they were the only Special Folders I relocated.) Could their disappearance be causing this issue or will I have other problems somewhere? It's the only thing I can think of right now.

Partition Wizard Home Edition's Partition Recovery Wizard tool is able to find this lost partition but gives a warning when attempting to recover (see image). I don't know if it plans to copy the data which could of course potentially overwrite itself (since I don't have another drive big enough to copy to, which I don't want to waste time doing anyway) or if it just overwrites/rebuilds the partitioning section at the start of the drive. Is this operation going to be relatively safe?
Or is there a generally safer option/tool for ... Read more

Hi everyone,

I'm on a Win2K network, and we have an old folder that contains archival files and folders from some old Mac computers that we used to use. I'm trying to archive that folder onto a CD, but most of the burner programs I've used (Nero, etc.) won't do this, because there are lots of file and folder names with strange special characters in them. I'm assuming this is because these came from Mac filesystems. Is there a way to get rid of all these characters in a batch or global way, a program I can use??

During my attempt to troubleshoot some Vista behavior, I checked the logs in the event viewer. While doing that, I noticed under "Security" that the log was humongous. The reason? Every minute, there is a "Special Logon" followed by two "Logon" entries. This just keeps repeating every minute. I cleared the log and rebooted... then monitored the log and the behavior continued.

Why does this happen? Is there some kind of logging that was accidentally turned on? I can't recall what I might have done, as I had to do quite a bit of troubleshooting with another problem... is there something I can check that controls logging? I tried searching the Vista forums and didn't turn up anything matching "Special Logon".

By default I use the "HTML" format for my outgoing Outlook messages. Whenever I need to paste something into my message, such as a portion of a Word doc or a website, I normaly like to do this without any formatting. Normally, when you use the "Rich Text" message format instead of "HTML", you have the "Paste Special" option in the Edit menu which allows you to paste only the text without formatting. Why is this option not available when you use the "HTML" message format?

My current work-around is to paste my selection into Notepad first and then into the e-mail but I was hoping to skip this step.

Any thoughts?

Hi all,

I have a long history of BSOD's with this computer during startup but I eventually discovered (also with the help of this forum) that they were caused by my DeathAdder mouse. BSOD's during startup have vanished.

Instead, they have been replaced with BSOD's during the use of Skype, Microsoft Word, LOTRO or anything else I might have running. There's no pattern that I can discern except the BSOD's originate under the Special Pool flag. I have previously turned on Driver Verifier to help get some additional detail in my dump files.

At this point, the best I can tell the BSODs point to my Webcam and NVIDIA drivers both of which are absolutely current and have been so for some time. I've reached the point where I need some assistance from someone with a lot more expertise in parsing out system info.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

In Vista, it is super easy to create a special virtual folder in My Computer that links to a remote FTP. Thereafter, you just open this folder, and can drag/drop files between your local puter and remote server. Mine is called "Remote Backup" and I use it (naturally) to move backup copies of stuff to my remote server.

Vista also has a decent backup utility, and MS makes a reasonably decent security/recovery suite (Live Onecare). Not to get into a discussion of the relative merits of those programs, but just stating that they are made by MS and/or native to Vista.

It is my understanding that in neither of these programs (native backup or L1C) can you select an FTP virtual folder as a backup location. It is not visible in the local drives listing, and is not visible in Network locations. Neither will accept a path beginning with ftp:// (or the path directly to the special folder by using "select as text" from its explorer location).

Am I missing something? Seems to me that if MS went through all the trouble of creating an easy ftp interface/virtual folder, AND the trouble of creating a backup program native to Vista, AND went through the trouble of creating a security/recovery suite designed for use in Vista, they would marry the two in order to create an easy way to provide the real benefit of offsite backups.

It is just...so...CLOSE that I think I am missing something. Is there any way to get the nat... Read more

For instance in my user folder I have two Documents folder, one pointing to C:\Users\yannick\Documents and the other to D:\Users\yannick\Documents. C:\Users is a junction that points to D:\Users.

My media files are duplicated as well in Windows Media Player.

When you re-located these user folders, did you use the "Move..." button on the location tab, and then told Windows to move ALL files to the new location? Doing so will eliminate this "duplication" you are experiencing.

The information that I read from following your link says:

Change the location of each data folder (i..e Documents, Pictures, Music) individually using Windows explorer settings.Modify the Windows registry to reflect the new folder locationIf you used the "Move..." button, you should not have needed to manually edit the registry.

After that the "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." message came up. I have the options (Start in safe mode / Safe mode with networking / Safe mode with command prompt / Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked) / Start Windows normally.) and everything, there is a countdown for starting windows normally, but for some reason my arrow keys dont work. It's hard to describe, so I will also upload a picture.
I noticed this issue about a week ago, basically the up arrow, down arrow, left arrow, right arrow, check-marks, (like I said, "special characters" I don't know what else to call them) are showing up as blank little squares.
On games, online, wherever they appear, they appear as blank little boxes.

I've uninstalled and re-installed my graphics driver already, ran the SCF/scannow (was recommended by someone on windows 7 forum) and that came back without any results.
They also asked about a language pack, but if I do have one installed, I don't know how/where to look for it. (Checked windows updater, didn't see any language packs).
I can't use system restore either, as it jumps from 3 days ago, to 3 months ago.

Anyone got any ideas???

Fyi, the picture I've uploaded is from Elsword. There should be up-arrows (insinuating an increase in a stat) where the annoying red box is.
This is NOT a problem with the keyboard, the arrow-keys on the keyboard work just fine.

A:Strange issue with "special characters"?

Just a minor update, I found out that if I send (↑ or ↓) any special characters through something like a IM chat, it appears as those same boxes to me, but the person on the other end see the directional arrows.

I uploaded another picture showing what appears in the chatbox.
Basically, any special characters that I input through a combination of alt + (2 random numbers from the number pad) all show up as boxes.

I hope this might help some one identify the problem.

I like to send my HTPC (home theatre PC) into standby if it's been idle for more than 15 minutes (actually MediaPortal does that for me) or manually if I don't need it at the moment but intend to use it later.

Over night I like to completely turn the HTPC and all the other home theatre components off, by cutting off the power (with a nice switch, don't worry), so everything's really off.
If the HTPC was shut down normally I don't have any problems cutting off the power and turning the HTPC back on when I switch the power on again - it boots up just fine.

But when I send the HTPC into standby mode AND THEN switch off the power supply, the HTPC will boot up with an error, that it wasn't shut down properly, prompting me to continue (as some components were still running when I cut off the power, right?).

Now my question - is it possible to go into some special kind of standby mode that is "safe" for a power loss? I know it wouldn't boot up any faster after the power loss, since it's a normal boot after the power was cut off, that's no problem. Also, hibernation is not an option.

A:"Special" standby mode?

Hibernation is not an option?

This is the only way I can think of giving you your control without the start-up error.

win7 does also have the hybrid mode where it enters standby and then hibernates after a further time lapse.

There is "Away Mode" available in some systems that is designed for HTPCs but not all systems support it and it also has the same issue as standby

On a new forum I know it's customary to look around, search for answers, do a little research, etc. I'm more than a little aggravated at this point and just need some help/opinions. I apologize in advance for being long winded. Rest assured I'm leaving a lot out and I mention what I do because I think X company is taking advantage of customers like me.

I'll spare you the full details of the past week and a half worth of calling and online chatting with my phone/internet company. What it comes down to is this: I want to upgrade my internet speed. I currently have a 6Mb speed, and want to go to 10, 12, whatever. While I've been trying to get a straight answer from customer service as to why I would need to pay for a connection fee to upgrade, lo and behold my internet goes out yesterday.

I unplug/plug the modem, always the first thing to do. Nothing. I logged onto the modem/router, PPP connection shows down, fine, I call internet customer service. I tell the guy what I did, told him I'm looking to upgrade in the next few days, he says no problem, let me overnight you a modem, you'll get it tomorrow (today). I ask if it will be an upgrade from what I have so I can get higher speed internet, he says yes.

Today comes and goes, no modem. I get an email with a tracking number, which doesn't work and a delivery date of YESTERDAY. huh? So I call Cust Serv again, dude sa... Read more

What was the point of renaming "My Documents" to "Documents" and then never exposing the new name? In every interface, it still appears as "My Documents".

Can I just get rid of the "My Documents", "My Pictures", special folder naming conventions and use the actual, underlying folder names?

A:Can I completely get rid of "special" folders?

You don't need to use either or rename anything.

You can make a folder called yourmama and save files to yourmama directly. I've never used the supplied folder structure and don't use libraries either.

Hi everyone
My motherboard (Asus P5N-e 32 SLI Plus) comes with a sound board (SoundMax ADIsomething)
Unfortunately, the driver of this sound board disables the "what you hear" ("Stereo Mix" in my case) option
In order to shoot videos from gaming sessions, I found a way to bypass tht limitation: I uninstalled it's driver, and then let windows install only the minimal components in the driver's folder
That worked perfectly: all functionnalities ok and the "Stereo Mix" option was back (could be usefull to others that have an Asus mobo, btw)

Nevertheless, I hate this kind of limitations and the prospect to have to do this each time I update the driver made me finally buy a new sound card (Creative) wich works perfectly

But now, each time I switch the computer on, I get a message saying soundmax has been modified (ya quite: it's not there anymore!) and needs to be re-installed

So I'd like to uninstall it's driver, but since it's not been installed using an installer, I do not have any uninstall pogram nor entries in the "add-remove programs" window
I guess I could install the entire soundmax driver and the uninstall it but I don't really want to create conflicts with the perfectly working Creative driver...

I know I have to remove files but also unregister some dll(s) but don't now where to start
Anyone has an idea on how to proceed? (a clean way if possible)

A:"special" driver to uninstall

See if you can disable it in the BIOS...
And let us know if this works OK

So; I have a Dell Inspiron 7720 laptop with a reformatted hard drive and I need to reinstall windows 7. I do not have the original Reinstallation DVD that came with this exact laptop but I do have one from another Dell Laptop ( a Studio 1558) and another Windows 7 disc from a desktop (the discs and the OS that was on the laptop before the HDD fail are all Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit). When I turn on the laptop with either disc and mash F12 and then select "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" from the boot options the screen immediately displays "Operation System not found" and stays at this screen until restarted.
I have run a full diagnostic check and everything passed, I have made sure the CD-RW Drive is no.1 in boot priority (don't imagine that matters if I  manually select it). The HDD and CD-RW Drive are detectable in BIOS too.... I have no idea what the problem is, any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Many thanks in advance,

Sometimes when I mistype a url like www.samsung.vom instead of .com, I'll wind up at a semi-adult site. It's lop.com.

I have a feeling it's something that fooled me into downloading because I had to reset my internet home page to what it was and it (lop) made itself my home page.

Usually, when I mistype a url, I get a generic black and whit message. Web site cannot be found" or something like that.

Can anyone help me forcably remove it from my system?

One of my Inspiron 17R 7720 SE laptops (I have three) hadn't been used for a while so I plugged in a charger to charge up the battery. The computer was turned off, not being used at the time. A while later I noticed the battery status LED on the front of the computer case was flashing 4 orange flashes, then white, then repeat.
When I started the computer I got a start-up message "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off the unit and try again when the unit is back to operational temperature".
Well the unit WAS at "operational temperature" since it was a cold start. When I run the F2 Setup, under battery health I get the same message.
I tried using a 2nd battery, same error, and a 2nd AC adapter with the second battery, still same error. The computer operates normally off the AC adapter, shows the battery at 100% charged, but shuts off immediately when the AC adapter is disconnected.
What is the problem and how do I re-enable my battery?

A:Inspiron 17R 7720 "Your Battery is Temporarily Disabled", Battery LED Flashing Orange

Unless there's some other issue - such as that the AC adapters are non-Dell or not recognized - the flashing LEDs indicate that one or more of the battery cells is bad -- in other words, the battery (or batteries) are dead.

I am going to buy a desktop and XPS 8910 looks great for me, especially the chassis design. However, I have some questions to select reasonable option considering upgrade in the future.
1. On the specification of the website says that "65W (standard); support up to 95W k processors with optional high capacity thermal heat sink (Special Edition only)". Does this means that the optional heatsink is only included in K processor? or every special edition XPSs are equipped with that.
2. Another point that I am concerning about is compatibility to regular m-atx mobo for the XPS chassis. The holes in the XPS 8910 mobo seems to be fit to regular. However, the I am not sure that back pannel is removable. If anyone know this, please let me know.

I have a HP Special Edition L2000 laptop that is continually flashing "Operating System Not Found". It alternates between the cursor and operating system not found message. I put in a disc to wipe the drive, and it recognized the Wipe Drive but did not show the disc being wiped. Any questions would be greatly appreciated. I have taken the ram sticks out and put them back in and I have also removed and replaced the HD.

There are several versions of this product.
Look up your model on the HP site, and find the manual, which will tell you how to reinstall the OS.

My system updated the bios automatically. Upon next restart the system was updating in the black screen.  Screen read "The System BIOS Boot Block is updatedDo not shutdown or remove power from your computer during the update. The update will take a few minutes to completeFor more information, plaese visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup"  Upon, what seems to be completion, the systems beeps three sets and nothing else happened. I left it alone for the rest of the day in case it took a long time for the update but it remained the same the entire time. It was plugged in the whole time, the battery was in the whole time. When I restart the system it does the same exact thing as in parenthesis above. I've tried holding down the window key and b, pushing power for two seconds on startup and it beeps 6 times and again does nothing. I've tried to create a bios file to a usb stick with the HP Bios update and recovery utility on my ASUS computer but I keep getting the message "Hp Bios Flash Uitility has stopped working" when trying to run the sp72549.exe file to create he usb bios.
