I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Try keeping up with the Vista service pack updates. Vista is up to Service Pack 2 and you are probably missing other critical updates as well

The internal microphone on my Elitebook x360 doesn't work, it won't record.  I?ve had it a couple of months but only got the chance to start using it in the last two weeks.  It seems that there have been others with similar issues, so instead of start with the basics, here's what I?ve tried so far. In the 'Sound > Recording' tab (right click speaker in task bar) the internal microphone (Conextant ISST) is enabled and default (always was).  The green bars do not light up if talking into the microphone, but one or two bars will appear when I tap on the display. Internal microphone properties > Levels: microphone array 100%, microphone boost +36dB (max). I have tried other levels also.  The microphone does not mute by itself, as I read that others have experienced. Internal microphone properties > Advanced: have tried using lower default formats, exclusive mode: on and off, signal enhancements: on and off. In device manager, audio inputs and outputs: I have updated and then uninstalled and reinstalled the Internal microphone (Conextant ISST Audio) driver. In device manager, sound, video and game controllers: I have uninstalled, downloaded and installed new drivers for Conextant ISST Audio and Intel(R) Display Audio. The mic mute button on the keyboard (F8) is not on. In command prompt, as administrator, I have killed the svchost task in the name of the computer and then run Malwarebytes - did not fix anyth... Okay I have no idea if this is even the right place to ask, but I am running Windows 8.1 so yeah idk. I would really like to have a microphone mute key on my keyboard. I have no way of muting except going into Recording devices and I don't want to do that. On my keyboard at the top I have a few keys mean't for other things, such as one on the end which opens up the Music app, and i'd like to just change one of those keys to a mute key for my microphone. I have a Blue Snowball microphone if that helps. I also have the Alienware Multimedia Keyboard that came with my Alienware X51.

I'm thinking about buying a Blue Snowball iCE because they are fairly cheap and but have great sound quality. I've read some reviews and watched some videos and I'm very happy with this mic, the only problem is that is doesn't have a mute button. I use the mute button a lot because my parents come in to my room frequently and just start talking, so i need to mute my mic so my friends can't hear them. The Blue Snowball iCE mic doesn't have mute button on it so i need a quick way of muting my mic.

I thought of putting in a switch in the wire that goes into the PC. The mic is connected to the computer by a USB, is there an extension wire i could buy with a switch attached to it, that i could plug the mic into and then plug that into the computer?

I really need a fast way to mute my mic and if anybody has any ideas I'm open to them!

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help!

Hey,
Every time I restart my computer I have to re-mute my microphone in the levels tab in the sound option. I do this so I do not hear myself talking through my speakers from my microphone, but so I can still use the microphone for applications.

Also, the microphone boost turn's off every restart as well.
So pretty much, every time I restart I have to mute my microphone again and re-enable the microphone boost.

What I want is too not have to do this on every restart. It only takes me about five seconds to set everything back up so it's only slightly annoying.

I have a creative x-fi xtreme gamer fatality sound card. I have set the correct settings through the audio console as well, but it still reset's to the microphone being set on and sound boost off on restart.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

I bought a Logitech USB microphone to use with DJ / mixing programs, but I cannot mute it on my desktop computer running with Windows 81. The computer recognises it and says the driver is up to date. The sound quality is fine, but the microphone is constantly on and can be heard in the speakers or headphones while I have it turned off in the programs. I have tried front and back USB ports and three different programs and it is always the same. I have an older laptop using Windows 7 and the microphone works perfectly with full control.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

A:cannot mute internal speakers

That's often caused by a faulty headphone jack on the laptop. When you plug headphones in, a spring-clip inside the jack is moved to one side by the jack-plug. This "breaks" the sound-signal circuit to the speakers. That spring clip is probably distorted or snapped.

Hello. I have a new T450s with Windows 10.   I hit F4 and the amber light goes on showing the microphone is muted.  Problem is that it "looks" muted but it is not.  I have also gone in through the software to mute and it lights up the F4 buttton.. However, it doesn't actually mute the microphone.   So I can never mute the mic..  Is there a fix for this? I see others have had this problem in the past.Thank you.

A:Cannot mute microphone with new lenovo T450s

Same problem with an old E330. The problems started when upgrading to Windows 10 + Realtek HD Audio Drivers (or the Lenovo Realtek Audio drivers, just rebranded). Something in that combination breaks the microphone's ability to be muted by software. The button works ok, the On Screen Display shows the icon and it's shown as muted however still works.Muting it manually from within programs which use the microphone works as well, as does uninstalling the Realtek drivers and going forth with the default Windows 10 drivers (but then there's a loss of functionality with the sound - options).

I am able to fix this issue each time by going to Playback Devices > Speakers > Levels (Tab) and then mute the microphone.

But my question is. Why doesn't this stay after a restart?

Hi, Team. It has been 24-hrs since I found out my thinkpad is not turning on.I have used this last Saturday afternoon and shut down completely.I never ever put my TP into sleep mode or hibernate mode. When I woke up yesterday, 11am I found out that the Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are lit up. The fan is not working (the entire system is off). The temperature of the laptop is normal, not warm or heating up like it is being used. I have removed the external battery and power adapter, pushed the power button for more than 3mins., put back the battery and plugged the power adapter (the power button blinks when I plug the power adapter as it usually does when) and pushed the power button back - nothing happens. The Fn, Mute and Microphone buttons are still lit up and the TP is not turning on.I haven't pushed the emergency reset button at the back (I fear that I might lose all my files).Up until now, the same 3-keys are lit up. I need help as soon as possible.

Windows XP is pretty much the same. best regards, ericoKind regards, erico

My computer was wiped recently and after reloading it with windows 7 the internal microphone has stopped working all together. I checked and it does not show up under my devices.
Detail about my computer:
I am using an Hp Widescreen lap top. Its an HP Pavilion dv9000 that originally was using Vista. I have had other internal issues in the past such as having the CD Drive stop working. I took that in and they said it is busted and the only way to fix it would be to have them take it out and put a new one in. The internal camera is still working though. I have never dropped my computer so I don't under stand what is happening. Also I think it may have happened before then. When I started using my headphones with a microphone attached it might have stopped working around there too... Sorry for not being very clear. I'm not sure when it stopped working EXACTLY. PLEASE HELP SOON! ~Haru

Have you checked the manufacturer's page and tried to find software related to your microphone? That might be a good first step.

Hello, I have a problem with the microphone that is build in the laptop. When the jack entry is clear, the microphone works fine. When I plug in my headphones the build in microphone stops working. However, the headphone does not have a build-in microphone (so it's only like a speaker) that I can use. How can I use my laptop microphone while the headphone is plugged in. In the record section (of the laptop's sound option) the microphone of my laptop is still checked as default and as active. However, it only works when I remove my headphone from the jack plug. I have only a single jack plug (probably for both audio and microphone). Thanks!

Hello

I recently reinstalled Win 7 on my HP Probook 4530s, and have encountered a few problems since.
The latest is that the internal microphone does not seem to be functioning at all through any programs that would use it (Skype, sound recorder etc).

It does appear in the audio devices control panel but not in device manager (although I don't know that it should?), and it says its working correctly but obviously this is not so!

Additionally, the sound was behaving erratically as well - it often will not work unless I click the test button on the speaker properties page. If I leave the computer for any length of time I have to repeat this.

I have downloaded the only audio driver that is listed here http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...Id=5060880&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4058 but this does not seem to have any effect.

Anybody have any ideas?

Hello everyone, So today I recieved my laptop back from repairs, I had a faulty Wifi adapter and they fixed this by completely replacing the motherboard and the wifi adapter and wiping my data. Now while that is a minor inconvenience, the bigger problem is that my internal microphone does not work at all.Windows shows it working, but it does not pick up sound at all, not in settings, not in skype and not after reinstalling my complete OS, now this sounds like they did not connect the microphone when replacing my MB.  I do not want to send my laptop back, so does anyone here know how to fix the mic without having to send it back, I tried every single software solution for my microphone, I have six years of IT epxerience. Kind regards, Coldfreeze

Do you see it in recording devices in this generic laptop? Is it set to default? You say Windows shows it working so it must be connected.
