I recently got a virus and am unable to drag icons, my taskbar won't load, and unable to download any antivirus

Q: I recently got a virus and am unable to drag icons, my taskbar won't load, and unable to download any antivirus

Hello, So I was recently infected by some Trojans, not sure which ones. But when I rebooted my computer my taskbar was unable to load and only showed a sliver of it at the bottom of the screen. Also i'm unable to drag any desktop icons and my sound drivers are unable to load. I've tried running multiple anti-virus programs such as Malwarebytes and Kaspersky and unable to do so since I receive an error trying to run it. When I try to open Windows Firewall, I get a popup saying "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Serice?" But when I press yes I get an error saying ICS cannot be started. Can anyone help?

I have Windows XP Professional SP3

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I noticed my BitDefender was not running and sent an email to the company. They sent me back a response that the licensing code was not valid (after two years) and they had disabled the software (without notifying me). I downloaded AVAST and immediately started having lots of problems such as unable to shut down, screens freezing. I unstalled, but the problems continued. I did a system restore back to the installation of AVAST, but stil having problems I purchased a new BitDefender, but it will not install. I tried updating Windows Security Essentials, but it will not install. I think something has hijacked my internet as it does not come on for a few minutes after I start the computer. I am unable to start in safe mode to try to install that way. Please help!

A:Unable to load antivirus; unable to start in safe mode

Exactly...what AV programs are currently installed on this system?
Installing more than one is a known invitation to unpredictable system problems.
Please download MiniToolBox , save it to your desktop and run it.

We got the Antivirus Live Saturday (not quite sure where/how - teen using the computer and clicking randomly = not good!).

How I fixed it: Opened IE, went into Tools, Internet Options, Connection, LAN settings, and unchecked the proxy server box.

AVG seemed to be affected, and obviously it didn't pick up the problem so after I was able to get back on the net I downloaded Spyware Doctor and did a full system scan. It found a ton of infections, removed them all and we thought we were good to go. Then last night I wasn't getting the error any more, but when I opened IE it started giving me the fake error message that there was an infection and directing me to the Antivirus Live page again. Argh!!

So I did a system restore to a few days prior to when I got the virus. Okay, all good. Except NOW the Spyware Doctor I downloaded isn't on my computer, and AVG won't work. I click it to open it and nothing happens. It didn't open in the system tray. I tried to uninstall it and I get the following: Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"

I tried to download Spyware Doctor and Avast and AVG uninstaller, etc. and nothing will download. Well, it appears to download but it won't run. I click "download" and it appears to be downloading but then when I click "run" nothing happens. ... Read more

Hi all,
under Win10 x64 & IE11 fully patched & updated, since some time I am unable to drag&drop websites to the "Favorites" bar in IE like before. I am now also unable to rearrange existing shortcuts at the bar by drag&drop.
What I already checked:

did reset all IE setting incl. personal settings - no effectStarted IE without addons - no effectTried with another user profile, no effectremoved almost all items from autostart (using MSConfig), no effectchecked folder permissions on my "Favorites" folder, they are fine

Booting Win10 in safe mode, drag&drop works, rearrange worksAdding a website using a button "Add to a favorites bar" worksafter opening "favorites" on the left side of IE and navigating to "Favorites Bar" folder, I was ABLE to rearrange shortcuts there, and the changes were instantly reflected on my "Favorites" bar.
Any suggestions?
I have found this thread with exactly same sympthoms, but unfortunately the "solution" provided there (and somehow marked as answer (???!!!)) is not a solution.

Whenever I start up my computer after I log onto my account no icons or task bar shows up, and the only thing I can see is my custom background. This all started to happen after i caught the System Security version 4.51 virus. at first the Virus kept asking me to purchase system security version 4.51 because i was infected with 38 different types of worms, malware, spywear, trojans etc. However, whenever i tried to run my virus scan (I have AVG) it would say the file can't be executed because the file was infected. The same exact thing would happen if I tried to open a number of other files and programs, like control panel. Because of that I couldn't simply delete the virus. I then rebooted my computer and started up in safe mode and deleted the virus. After that i restarted the computer and logged in normally, but i couldn't see any icons or the task bar. so I then repaired and reinstalled the OS, and i still had the exact same problem. I tried to find the "explorer.exe" file and delete it but it wasn't there. I've been using task manager to start new processes. Also, i can't run AVG scans now because it's telling me to reinstall it, but i don't have the product key. So can somebody please help?

My friend has asked me to look at her laptop as when she tries to log in to Windows XP Pro it presents her with many errors and doesn't load the desktop icons or the start bar. Unfortunately she is not aware of anything that she may have done to cause this.

When I first tried to log into Windows it came up with the following error:

Explorer.EXE - Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\WININET.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

When I clicked ok various other similar errors appeared but I was able to access Task Manager so I ran chkdsk /r. Since rebooting the first error is:

Explorer.EXE - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because WININET.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I am not sure what to do now. I can't run Internet Explorer as it says it can't find it - I was going to see if I could run an online virus scanner. If I try to go into Safe Mode I get the following BSOD:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804D92C2, 0xF96E55C4, 0x00000000)

I am hoping to try and find a way of sorting this out without reinstalling Windows as I don't want to lose her data if at all possible.

I've been directed this way from the General Security board because they think I have a virus. I have been using Symantec anti-virus, but over the last few weeks I have been unable to download any updates and the autoprotect turned off. I uninstalled it and then I tried to dowload the McAfee security package offered by Comcast, but when it got through the opening screens it said unable to connect to the Internet. The same happens when I try to download Avira or any of the other free AV programs. Please let me know what you think I should do and thank you in advance!

Hello All,I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and have had McAfee Security Centre installed for about 6 months now. It has been updating automatically every day (almost) since then until last weekend. Now it won't update / download for reinstall and I cannot download other Antivirus / malware programs either. Here's the long story:Last Saturday a little banner popped up telling me that McAfee had been unable to update, maybe corrupt and therefore needed reinstalling. I went onto the McAfee site, logged into my account and attempted to download the most up-to-date version on the site. "Unfortunately the link seems to be broken". So I went hunting for other ways to that file but could find none.I contacted McAfee tech support by email and the suggested that I may need to remove the old version first using their removal tool (MCPR.exe) which I was also unable to download!I then contacted McAfee tech support via their real-time internet chat and the person at the other end simply kept telling me to dowload MCPR and try to reinstall. I told her I couldn't but she then said she'd email me full instructions and vanished. At about this time I noticed that I was being redirected to wrong pages from Google and suspected a virus (rather than a McAfee server error which I had been thinking up til now) so I did an extra in-depth scan of the whole computer and found 2 instances of NTOSKRNL-HOOK Trojan which I managed to eventually clean by running McAfee in ... Hello let's try this..Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first***Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.***Open up command prompt, type in following commands: XP >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and select "Run". First of all, let me say thank you! Honestly, any help at all that you provide will make a huge difference.

Essentially, I think that I very stupidly downloaded a false anti-spyware tool... winguard I think it was called. Now it is as if there is a proxy that is blocking access to anti-virus/anti-spyware upgrades (I even tried to download mbam as I saw in another topic and I wasn't able to).

Anyhow, due to the fact that I am essentially computer illiterate, I don't know what the virus could be. I'm sorry to not give you more information, but I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks again!

My apologies for being unable to provide the starting information as requested in the readthisfirst thread, but under the circumstances, it can't be helped. I run a PC, Windows XP SP3.

This evening my computer was hit by a antivirus.net fake antivirus virus. This was not my first experience with false antiviruses, so I stayed calm, loaded up spybot (before the virus blocked all programs), and tried to get rid of it. I failed, and tried to reboot in safe mode as normal. Unfortunately, I can't even do that. As my computer tries to load windows, a few seconds into the loading, it flashes a blue screen with error text for a split second (I can barely make out something about a critical error and windows is being shut down to protect the computer) and then the computer restarts again.

This is baffling, and frankly, a nightmare. I've never before been unable to enter safe mode (or any mode of windows), and if I can't even *get* there, how am I supposed to run programs to counter the virus or even give you all more detailed information?

I appreciate any and all help that you can give me in fixing this, and will answer any questions I can to the best of my ability!

I have two computers running Windows XP SP2 [one is Home edition, this one is Media Center Edition]. Anyways, somehow my father has gotten the same virus/malware onto both computers. I can't download any files from anywhere [my uninfected vista PC was able to download everything I tested], and I can't run any online virus scans because they require downloading components. Ironically, both computers have Symantec Antivirus 9 Corporate [I got it free from school]. Both of them won't update. I had to do a manual virus def update and still came up with nothing. I tried spybot too, and it found some stuff but
the problem is still there.

My friend advised me to try ComboFix on this PC, but with no luck. In fact, System Restore is broken too. It says 'System Restore could not restore to your selected date," blah blah blah. Because Combofix would NEVER complete, my system clock also says the time in 24h format instead of 12h format and won't change in the control panel.

Good afternoon. Yesterday, I downloaded an update for my husband's HP printer onto his computer. At the same time, it downloaded BING, which we have never used. After that, we noticed his firewall was off, and we were unable to get it turned back on. Also, we cannot download any security. And his home page has changed. We are unable to change it back. We have Microsoft security essentials which runs regularly. In doing some research, it appears his browser has been hijacked.

Can someone please help me get his computer UN-hijacked? http://www.sevenforums.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Here are some things you might want to try:
1. Run a full scan on Security Essentials? If so, did you find any viruses?
2. Go to Start>Run>msconfig and go to the startup tab and make sure that only the items that are important (eg. Windows 7, Intel Software, Microsoft Security Essentials) items are selected; you may also be able to find the item if it has made a shortcut here.
3. Try going into safe mode and see if anything changes.
4. What you may also want to do is to get Malwarebytes and perform a scan: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

you a virus that i have come across before.

boot into safe mode (while booting press F8 like crazy)

go into the device manager (right click on my computer and go to manage.) once there go to device manager, click on view (up at the top) and click show hidden devices. On the right hand pane you should now see a section that says non-plug and play drivers. Hit the plus sign and look for the thing that says TDSserv.sys (might be minor spelling but you get the idea). Right click on it and disable it (dont uninstall it).

Reboot the computer into safe mode again and attempt to update malewarebytes, and this should fix your problem (but i would definately download another program superantispyware and run it also just to be safe.

hope this helps if not let me know.

6. I only get a blank screen when I open up User Accounts from the control panel.

7. Windows Firewall does not work at all.

I have no clue what happend. I just have spybot search and destoy on the computer currently as It won't let me install any anti-virus's due to the firewall being inactive, I just constantly get errors during installs. I've ran spybot search and destroy, xoftspy, trend micro online virus scanner and have found some random virus's/spyware but the removal of anything does not fix any of these problems. I have also noticed that in my system manager I have an unknown device in there with a yellow question mark beside it, yet I have no way of finding out what this is.

I have included an HJT log in hopes that someone see's something I don't.

I cannot get windows to load the drivers for a Jabra UC Voice 550a MS Duo USB headset. Under Devices, Windows 7 shows lists this headset by name as an Unspecified device. In device manager, Windows 7 lists this headset under "Other devices".
I called Jabra Support and they say this is a Windows problem. It must be in configuration somewhere or related to several Windows Updates that occurred on my PC on Oct 2nd, 2014. Prior to Oct 2nd, 2014, this headset worked and this headset still
works on other PCs. Any help will be very much appreciated.

A:Windows 7 unable to recognize any USB communication headset. Unable to load driver.

Hi robh,
Do the other USB devices work correctly? Have you tried to plug in with another port?

I recommend you to follow these steps to have a fix.
Step1.Run this fix it tool to have a check .
Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows
Step 2.Reinstall the headset driver, you may need to manually download the headset driver from the manufacturer website and install the driver for this device.
Step 3.Uninstall and reinstall the USB controllers from the device manager and then plug in the headset to have a check.

To do this :
In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" , click "OK", repeat for each device and restart . Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers
Meanwhile, here is a link for reference:
Error: ?USB Device not recognized? when you try to access a USB external hard drive.

I am having two problems with itunes. I am unable to download the most recent download 10.6.3 and have been unable to do so since 10.6.1. It says errors occurred while installing the updates. If the problems persist choose Tools>Download Only and try installing manually. When I do, I end up with "error writing to file:C:\Config.Msi\2456585e.rbf" and have no idea what that means.
I am also unable to burn any cds. When I try to, it say disc burner or software not found. I have burned cds in the past.
I have a sony vaio with vista on it and the following:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version
OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 32 bit

A:unable to burn cds (cd burner or software not found) and unable to download itunes up

1. I'd uninstall the cd burner you are using, uninstall all itunes software, then use ccleaner to run cleaner.

2. Restart your vaio, and install fresh versions of itunes, cdburner xp.

Recently my computer has been progressively getting worse, or so it seems. At first all that I was limited on was going to a handful of sites that I tried (Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc...). Currently, I am having difficulties getting on more and more sites, sites that I had been recently able to get on. In my attempts to take care of the problem on my own I downloaded Malwarebytes, IObit Malwarefighter, and ran recovery manager to set my computer back to factory condition. I knew because I did the recovery that it was going to most likely not work so I saved files and documents I wanted to save on a thumb-drive. Malwarebytes and IObit claim to have found nothing but I can't seem to upgrade Malwarebytes as the program crashes when it scans for an update. Since I recovered my computer I cannot watch anything on Netflix (on any browser), and I still can't access any of the websites I was unable to. I went onto Wikihow and tried to reset my "hosts" file but it seems whatever I did could have just been more damaging than helpful, I am not quite sure. I am running Windows 7 as an operating system on an HP computer. I have looked at threads you have done or solved in the past and some of the solutions that worked for other posters did nothing to cure my problem. Thank you for reviewing my issue and if I need to post any more information to get things rolling just let me know.

Hey everyone,

This is my first post in this forum. I have a virus that appears to be fairly common and I have done my research on it.

This virus is preventing sites like this one, mcafee and avg from opening on my desktop cpu.

I read BleepingComputer's Rapid antivirus removal instructions before posting this thread, but my cpu would not download the software because of this virus apparently.

Now, when I reboot my cpu, it becomes inoperable after booting normally and once my desktop screen pops up, an blank explorer webpage opens up involuntarily and the CPU just freezes.

Is there a way to fix this virus in safe mode?

I cannot afford to have everything wiped out.

A:Rapid Antivirus Virus -- unable to fix on my own -- need help

Can you get into Safemode w/networking?Not for Vista--------------------------Please print out and follow these instructions: "How to use SDFix". When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan. Please be patient as the scan may take up to 20 minutes to complete. When the process is complete, the SDFix report log will open in Notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report. The SDFix report log (Report.txt) will open in Notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder. Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.Be sure to re-enable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.

If you aren't sure that you have cleaned this computer I would suggest that you follow the instructions in This Guide starting at Step 6.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE Please include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to try to resolve them.If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. A:Please Help, Trojan/Virus & unable to download DSS!

I tried researching about my situation and found/tried to get DSS to work (step 5), but I am not having any success at all.

Windows XP Pro on a DELL D600 laptop

The virus' or "problems" keep INCREASING!!!
I run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware every few hours and the number of infections ranges from 0-18 total. After I run it, they go away, but come back a few hours later!

There are now AUDIO/RADIO ads playing, but no windows are open!!!

I reset my security settings to "default level" for each category "all 4 of them", but there does not seem to be any effect.

I still get the message as a "balloon" just under the address bar at the top of the screen.

?Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer.
This page may not display correctly. Click here for options.?

When I click this "balloon", > "information bar Help" pops up and just directs me to Windows Help "area".

I also tried to get Trend Micro "Hijack This" to download, but the same error message appears.

Also, I was able to get a Panda ActiveScan and report.

Am at my parents. Main machine has no AV so I am trying to install it,. I have run Housecall and it came back clear NOTHING found! Spybot found a minor cookie and nothing else. BUT we cannot install ANY AV product. I have tried running Panda, AVG, Avast, Bitdefender. All will get to a few percent and then will hang. We have tried to download it to a flash drive and no joy.

I am not sure if this has anything to do with it but the machine is still using IE6. Parents do not want to upgrade to IE7 or Mozilla... could this have anything to do with it???

Internet connection can be slow, I have deleted System restore points and that has helped, also there is a wireless LAN here for my dads laptop and this will not download AV either, Norton was removed last night as it had run out and I was trying to install AVG on both machines!

Both machines run on Windows XP Home and Both are on SP2.

Any help appreciated, I may be able to run a Hijack this log BUT when I follow the instructions it wants AV run!!

A:Unable To Download Anti Virus

Right.... I think I have resolved the issue! .. The wireless router was causing havoc with the PC... When Dad went to bed I unplugged the router and all the issues vanished!!! I have now updated the router and hopefully all is well!

Hi. I noticed this morning that my Norton AntiVirus was disabled. I then tried to run it and it didn't come up. Then I tried to run Malwarebytes and it ran with no viruses coming up (but it was outdated). I then tried to download an update to Malwarebytes and it would not download. I then went into Safe Mode and tried running another program through my Disk Drive (on a CD) and that would not run.

Then I contacted Geek Squad and they could not remote in due to this problem.

Since yesterday it seems I have some mallware.
I have managed to run the Kaspersky TDSS Killer (advice from forums), found something, rebooted.
I have quickly installed AVG Internet Security (trial period) , Mallwarebytes AntiMalware Pro (trial period) .
Now I have scanned with all of these and again with TDSS Killer , and all of them report nothing.
But I am not able to download anything, all my downloads are deleted for virus reasons directly in the browser (IE9). I think that Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Defender are corrupted, because I cannot start any of them, but I think one of them is blocking my downloads. Also my Windows Action Center reports that "Potentially harmfull software detected, but the "Clean" button does nothing.
All of this is happening with AVG and Malwarebytes active.... and no reaction ... so.... need some help

A:Unable to start MSE and Defender, unable to download

After a lot of reading, I have managed to solve this with Hitman Pro and then RogueKiller.
The only thing that is not working is Windows Defender. I can click it in the Control Panel, the service is stopped, but when I hit "Start Now" to reactivate it I get "the specified service does not exist as an insltaled service (code 0x80070424).

It all started with my Microsoft updates, download them, but couldn't install them.
So I turned all my virus protection off along with my spyware. Still cant install, but now something is not letting me get my virus protection back on.

Home PC, Windows XP, runs fine, for right now, but I'm sure I will be getting in trouble down the road if I can't update.

I also am unable to run any thing with active X controls, as far as the spywares that you recommend running before we post. All users are administrators on my PC. Sometimes get an error saying that I am not an administrator.

I do however get a pop up at welcome screen saying something about my window installer that I have to cancel out of. Something like: the program that you are choosing to run is not available, It might be on disk or cd, please insert cd and click OK. I get this on every users desktop and also everytime the cursor hits a program in my "All programs", the window installer error comes up again.

I've tried to reinstall Windows Installer 3.1, but each screen that I hit "next" on just flicks by, you can never see it working. It says it is installed, however it never asks me to restart.

I'm really thinking this is the culprit to everything.

I also am unable to remove any programs from add/remove. The same window installer error comes out until I have to quit the remove process.

Below is my hijack list, let me know if there is anything out of the ordinairy:

I recently found it necessary to restore my system from a dedicated Compaq restore partition. The big downside for me is that it restores everything to original software dated 2005. I lost all of my hard copies and upgrades in a move so I'm stuck. Realizing that my virus software was 5 years out of date I attempted to uninstall it and download Avast as a temporary measure until I could get moved and install the free McAfee Suite. I removed the 2005 version of Norton. After the removal process. I checked to be sure that the Windows firewall was in place and active and I noticed that there was an "unexplained error" with the Windows firewall. I tried to download Avast but got an error message. I tried AVG and got the same result. The problems seemed to increase with the new restore and I started to suspect a virus. After awhile IE8 was affected as was anythng I tried to do on a Microsft site through IE. I switched to Chrome and was able to make some progress, but then chrome started having issues. I then did another restore to a different HD and a fresh partition. It would seem that the IE8 issues were likely attributed to the conflict with the Google toolbar so I was able to resolve that. With the new restore though, I got four error messages on first boot regarding Norton and I was unable to access it. I went to the Symantec website and used the "all in one" uninstaller which allowed me to remove the Norton software. I then tried to downlo... Read more
