Bizarre: Windows taskbar shows improper icons in small icon mode

Q: Bizarre: Windows taskbar shows improper icons in small icon mode

So, pretty self explanatory, I have this super bizarre problem, whenever I have my taskbar set to small icons in the properties, the taskbar icons are all wrong, for example, the Windows Task Manager will show up as Google Chrome (application seem to take a fancy for that icon) or Adobe Lightroom will show up as the Windows Picture Viewer. I have searched everywhere, and all I can find are cases of missing icons, which is not my problem. Perhaps this is linked to the other problem I am having. (Half of monitor is out of sync.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Don't know if I can help but will also try take a look at your problem.

First, just to be clear, note the 3 groups of icons along the bottom of screen image below. On left are Quick Launch icons, middle are open programs, on right are notification icons. Which group(s) are wrong when small? Also, can you right click a wrong icon and select Pin to Start Menu. Does it get pinned with the right or wrong icon?

Hello there,

Yes; i am using ClassicShell, BUT i use the default Windows 8.1 Start button (cause i like the way it looks).

Thing is, when i change my taskbar icons to small, the size of the Start button is also scaled down. This looks out of place / ugly on the taskbar imo.

Does anyone here know if it is possible to use the original size and original Start button when small taskbar icons are used?

This is how it looks now:

A:Large Windows Start button when small taskbar icons used?

Hi there. Don't know how to reduce the size, but here's a little program that one of the members named hb860 created to eliminate it from the taskbar. I've used it for quite some time and works great. Hope this helps you.

This references: Quick Launch Bar: icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a "bug" with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom.

I, for a while now, have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being 2 unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary ( left ) monitor. When I first set this up it showed 3 lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to 2 lines on the standard taskbar. This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works. With pinned applications, no matter what position I drop the icon, the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and below with or without grouping enabled.

The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications ( see aforementioned topic ) because they group together and launched apps come after; in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system ( if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mod... I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous
black screen

I'm running 8.1 legit

When I started up my computer yesterday morning the icons that usually show up in the taskbar weren't there. Thinking it was maybe just a glitch, I restarted the computer. And again.

At some point the icons did show up but only a few of them responded when I clicked on them. The Open Office icon, Firefox, documents and a couple of others worked fine. The calculator would not respond either by clicking onscreen or by pressing the calculator button on the keyboard.

I then clicked on the Windows icon and it did not respond. It wouldn't respond from the keyboard either.

When my husband got up I asked if he'd had trouble with the computer the night before only to learn he had been surfing porn. At some point an alert pop-up came up. He panicked and followed the instructions on the pop-up which included restarting the computer. That is when the icons on the taskbar disappeared.

I ran AVG (clean), Malewarbytes (quarantined items suggested), did sfc/scannow (no issues found). Stared googling and tried a couple of simple suggestions including making a new user account. In the new account all icons show up and respond.

I've tried to make that local account a Microsoft account so I could access all of my stuff there, but when I get to the part where it asks me to confirm my password one more time I get a message that "another user on this device uses this Microsoft Account, so you can't add it".

Recently my battery icon disappeared on my taskbar and in its place is a blank spot. When I turned the power icon display off and back on, the space went away and reappeared. I turned my Wifi icon display off and back on and where the wifi icon once appeared, the battery icon displayed and a blank space appeared next to it where the wifi icon would be displayed. I've included two screenshots to show my issue: Is there anything else I can do other than a system restore to a previous version? I feel as though ever since my warranty ran out (literally two days after) I've had nothing but annoyances with this computer and have had to do too many system restores. Thanks.

Hello again.. My Google Chrome is pinned to my taskbar and when I click the icon it has always opened a window within that icon.. all of a sudden it started creating a separate one.

I found a thread about this issue on this forum and it seemed to be solved with the solution below. This solution does not work for me as there isn't two Google Chrome.ink when I get to UserPinned\Taskbar. Also when I right click on the new icon and select 'Pin this program to taskbar'.. It no longer has the right click option of 'New INCOGNITO Window'.

I found another solution online saying to delete the UserData from Chrome but my Chrome isn't synced up with my gmail account because it has caused problems in the past so I have no way of retrieving my bookmarks, extensions, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!!

Welcome to Seven Forums juiceimus. The fact you don't have it synced makes it difficult, as that is a fix. I have 2 ideas for you:

Right click the Chrome shortcut> Properties> Compatibility Tab> Change compatibility to Vista

See if that works (you could try other compatibility choices as well. This would be a workaround as the fix is something you can't do

Also, you might try unpinning the icon, Open Chrome from the start menu by right clicking the Chrome icon and choosing Run as administrator. Now pin that instance of Chrome to the taskbar, and see of that helps.

Hi All..

Last night in a rush to go out I shut down my computer by holding down the power button, instead of waiting for windows to close the open programs and shut down properly.

When I got back, I turned the computer on, and the boot process was severely messed up. After the animated black Windows XP screen, it goes black for a few minutes, then the blue screen that says 'windows is starting up' (or something similar) appears, but stays for another 5 or so minutes. Then, the 'Welcome' blue screen comes up but stays for even longer. When Windows finally loads, the wallpaper loads, then the desktop icons (note programs' correct icons don't show, only window default 'exe' icon), then the taskbar, but the task bar remains white and only has the start button, quick launch and clock - no other icons show.

It stays like this indefinitely, with the CPU light flashing and the computer seemingly loading. I left it on all night and it got no forther.

When in that state, anything I click on (including ctrl-alt-del) takes about 5+ minutes to do.

I tried safe mode - it took so long to load I gave up.

I tried ERD Commander - not even that would load past a blank screen with a cursor.

I tried booting from the Windows CD - the reinstall option isn't there and it doesn't spot the previous installation.

I am using Windows XP Home SP2 - Can ANYONE help? Is there a solution or do I have to format and reinstall?? Eek.

My problem is that for the past week the buttons/icons in the taskbar have been about 1/2-1/4 smaller than they're supposed to be. No text even shows up next to them.

So far I've tried changing every visual setting I can think of (taskbar menu, dpi, res., visual effect, etc...) but nothing has worked. I compared my registry entries for explorer to my girlfriend who is also running vista and everything is exactly the same. It's really bugging me and I have no idea what happened.

I have object dock installed, but I've disabled it for now and nothing has changed.

Hello Djangelico, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Are you using an Aero theme?

If you are, then double check these items: You must be have True Color (32 bit) set instead of High Color (16 bit).
The desktop composition and Animate controls and elements inside windows options need to be enabled in Visual Effects.
The Desktop Window Manager Session Manager and Themes Services need to be set as Started and Automatic.
Refresh or update your WEI score. You will need an WEI score minimum of 2.0 in both Graphics & Gaming graphics in order for Aero to be activated.
Hope this helps,

A:Weird taskbar problem when using small icons

Is your screen resolution set to its native resolution? Are the video card device drivers up to date?

I've tried to replicate the problem you are having on my computer, using every resolution supported, and I'm unable to duplicate the issue.

That is definitely weird for sure. Does it do it when you have the taskbar set to normal?

You could also create another account on your machine, just to make sure its not a profile issue on your computer.

That is a weird thing, I've never seen that before.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how to set a custom icon size for the taskbar icons in Windows 7. I know you can select between large or small, however I'd like something in between those sizes (call it medium).

The large size takes up too much space, and the small size is a little small for my 15 inch high res laptop screen. Is there a way I can specify the icon size myself through the registry?

My guess would be that you are going to need some third party program to do this. But be careful> icon, cursor and screensaver programs frequently come with adware, spyware or other malware.

Could anyone tell me of a firewall (free or paid) that has a taskbar icon that turns to flickering lights whenever internet activity takes place.  I use Windows 7 Pro and would really appreciate anyone letting me know of such a firewall.

I have XP on a second older computer with ZoneAlarm Pro and I love how ZoneAlarm's little 'Z' in the taskbar changes to flickering lights to let you know when there's internet activity.  I have no idea why the company decided to remove this wonderful feature from later versions of the program.  This feature is invaluable for letting me know if there is NO activity where there SHOULD BE ... or if there IS activity when there SHOULDN'T be.

I found a small utility call 'LanLights' that put an activity light in the taskbar, but what I really want is a firewall that has that feature built-in as part of the program.

Cheers

Every 20-30 seconds all of the desktop icons and the taskbar disappear, leaving just the background. If I try to open the task manager, the computer freezes up.

Hi all.
I have a simple question how to reduce the taskbar menu icons using regedit
For now they are big to me.
Of course I know how to reduce the taskbar menu icons but I want to reduce them using registry.
Is there any trick to do this?
Maybe someone you know and you can help?

here is where i want to change it to smaller icons on taskbar meniu.

And this is the way i know how to change but not do not know how to do that with registry.

Thank you in advance.

A:how to enable small icons in taskbar menu using registry tweak ?

Hello Polas, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The way you are showing is how to change the size of the icons on your desktop, but not on the taskbar.
OPTION TWO or THREE in the tutorial below can show you how to change the taskbar icons to be large or small using the registry. It's the same in Windows 8.

Taskbar - Use Small or Large Icons - Windows 7 Forums

Hope this helps,

As stated in the title, the Network icon on the taskbar in the bottom right, always shows the disconnected Ethernet, even while I am connected to wifi. I've also tried connecting it via the Ethernet port, and it still shows the disconnected Ethernet icon. Also, not sure if this is related or not, but at every boot, windows tries to install an unidentified-unnamed device. I will post screenshots of the problems.

Here's the screenshots.

If you can post a screen shot of your ipconfig/all it will help me to see the adaptor that is causing the problem.

Hi!
I have just re-installed my OS. After I installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 64 bit, I pinned it in my taskbar. The icon of the desktop shortcut looks good, but in the taskbar, this is how it looks:

How could I solve this problem?

A:The icon shows in taskbar as "unknown icon"

Hello barbu110 and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's possible that your icon cache became damaged or corrupt for some unknown reason. You could try rebuilding it and see what happens.

Hello,

I've tried starting up my "tower" (cpu) and pressing F8 to getting in the administrators account. Of course everything was fine till the point I can't view icon's on my desktop, and when I click the start menu its all blanked out in black or white. Everytime I view a folder, the same with the icon's.. not sure what happened, but this is making it more difficult not for the images but that the start menu is all blanked out in another color or "transparent" as you might say, but im not sure. Any advice? Thanks.

Here is the final solution for your problem:
No DESKTOP ICOS/START MENU IN XP SAFE MODE - SOLVED!!!!
by Valerian E Partenie

Virus name: virtumonde.ggx - no info on the internet about this version!
Also it may be involved Troian.Fotomoto virus

As this is my FIRST "one on one" fight with a new generation of viruses, I'll describe you with my own words
what the virus did to my computer, what are the attack aspects and how I got rid of it!

Finally I MADE IT!!! After 3 days of work, trying to find the right cure, I found it!

Description of the virus:

It is a virus, that has 3 main things installed on your computer:
1.a link to it's site - in Internet temporary files - that can not be deleted (it comes back) if you are connected to the internet
2.an exe file - that is not identified by the scan program, because it is harmless itself but it's doing its job.
3.a dll file - that is identified by bitdefender, can be deleted but it comes back if you are on the internet
As he can be destroyed only from the safemode with no internet, that is the reason why he protects (hide) the safemode desktop!
(Try starting the computer in safemode with network support and you'll see that the desktop is fine!!!)
Well, I don't really know what is he doing when he gets out, like what information he sends and to whom,
but I can surely say that he is responsible for the following symptoms:

1. I can not access Safe mode!!! Black screen with no ICO... Read more

Hi, I have a kiosk PC that is looking pretty good however I have two outstanding issues.

The users can still right click on applications on the taskbar and receive a context menu even though I've disabled the context menu in the group policy editor.
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar/Remove access to the context menus for the taskbar - Enabled

And I can't figure out how to remove the "show desktop" icon in the systems notification tray.

Thanks in advance for any help

A:Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hello Megan,

Hope you're doing fine.

Disabling context menu from application on the taskbar
Please note the task bar context menu for any application for windows 7 is sub-divided into two sections :

   a. Jumplist(to access recently opened files)
   b. Creating a new instance of the application, Pin/Unpin, Close window

We can only disable the Jump List of the Taskbar context menu but not the "new instance creation, Pin/Unpin, close window"

Please follow the steps below to disable jump list:
1. Right-click on the Taskbar and then select Properties.
2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".
3. Click OK.

Disabling Show Desktop from the system tray
Regarding the requirement of disabling the "Show Desktop" button alltogether from the System tray, this is by design.

There are no ways to remove it. All we can do is to disable aero peek at Taskbar properties by right clicking and uncheck the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".
There's a third party software which addresses this sopecific purpose but I'm not pretty sure if this works perfectly for Windows 7 SP1 as well. Please refer to the link below.

My taskbar icons seem to 'morph' from their site specific LOGO back to the IE or Firefox logo (icon) as a result of something I am doing.

I have gone for months with them showing as I wish, with the site specific LOGO and today I opened IE (instead of Firefox) to do something specific and my site specific icons changed back to the IE icon.

I use this task bar alot and would like my icons to be site specific.

Can you explain this?

Thanks

We have enabled Enterprise Mode for our company globally on 8000+ computers.  I have had multiple instances so far where users were having issues with a website and testing would show that Enterprise Mode solved the issue.  I have added the
sites to the XML list and I have been able to confirm with the users that the Enterprise Mode icon would begin appearing and the site functionality would be restored.  However, for two users, they icon does not appear when they go to the sites.
The functionality is restored so I know that Enterprise Mode is actually in effect, however there is no visible indication to show this.  I have searched online and have searched the forum but I was not able to find any relevant postings.  Have any
of you encountered this before and do you have a solution for it?  It's not that big of a deal, since the users can still do their work, it would just make future troubleshooting easier if I could provide details about this to our Service Desk.

Thank you.

(Sorry if this is the wrong section)

Just today I was playing music from a YouTube playlist and I noticed that suddenly the bottom part of the taskbar and the upper part of the Chrome window (where all the tabs are) kept blinking: the icons on the taskbar disappeared, and instead it was blue and the windows icon on the right kept blinking on and off. The upper part of the Chrome window began blinking between inactive and active (darker and lighter). When I minimized all the windows open my wallpaper was instead just completely blue, with all the icons gone and the taskbar still blinking. I also received a bizarre error message along the lines of "random-string-of-letters-and-numbers could not access the memory of other-random-string-of-letters-and-numbers". Overall I wasn't really able to do anything in this state once the windows had closed out, because the windows button no longer worked and all the icons were gone.

I tried shutting down my computer and restarting it, which seemed to work at first until I tried playing the music again, at which point the whole process repeated with more error messages I couldn't fully understand. I restarted it again, and decided to not play any videos this time since that seemed to trigger it. So far it hasn't occurred again.

What I'm wondering is what's causing this, and if it's even possible to fix it. My immediate thought was a weird one-time error, but after it happened twice in a row I suspected malware. Except th... Read more

I have Windows XP professional w/SP3. It's been run hard every day since 2006 or so. I suspect it has a deeply ingrained form of malware or virus or some deleted file or other horrible thing. Recently when I boot up it takes over 10 minutes to load and then the welcome chime never happens and the icons and taskbar will not load, all I see is my background. I hit ctrl+alt+del and there are only 21 processes going and explorer.exe IS actually one of them. In the past I've been able to boot up in safemode and do a system restore to the day before and go on my merry way. Not so this morning, I tried a couple different system restore points and they wouldn't go through. I had contacted microsoft and they suggested it was a corrupt user profile. We went through the process of creating a new user profile and tried to copy the files over but got an error message saying that some of them could not be accessed and the dump was stopped. So I deleted the attempted new user was told to reinstall windows by microsoft and have come here instead. I am not computer savvy, I know how to do what I'm told and click the scan button on Bitdefender and Malwarebytes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Icons and taskbar won't appear unless in safe mode

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here. Install it. Make sure it is up to date with the latest definitions (it should be if you install it immediately after you download it). Run a full scan overnight. If no results come up, you may have to run a disk clean up and defragmentation. Download and run CCleaner. After that cleanup is complete, run a defragmentation using these directions: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../all/proddocs/en-us/snap_defrag.mspx?mfr=true

If that doesnt work, you may have to reinstall the OS (clean install). My old XP machine took forever to load because I loaded it up with a bunch of junk and barely had any free space and RAM.

If i enter through safe mode, and safe mode with networking, the icons, taskbar, and start menu are there

yesterday, i deleted my AV (avg) due to my frustration, and then suddenly, when i entered normal mode, the icons, taskbar, start menu were back. When i tried to install bit defender AV, and then restarted my comp and enter through the normal mode again, the icons, taskbar, start menu weren't there again. Hi flobberangel,

It will require more than one round to properly clean your system. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Read through this entire procedure and if you have any questions, please ask them before you begin. Then either print out, or copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.
