[SOLVED] Vista Recycle Bin not showing deleted items!

Q: [SOLVED] Vista Recycle Bin not showing deleted items!

I've been running Vista Ultimate a year and two months (one of the really early adopters) and have had problems but also seen corrections. For the most part I feel it is fairly stable.

I am having a problem I hope somebody can help me with. My recycle bin doesn't show that it has items to delete. It just shows an empty basket. When I go and check I see things in there so I delete them.

I have deleted the recycle (intentionally) and the went to Personalize on the desktop and chose to set all the defaults. It works for awhile and then it just goes back to showing as though there is nothing in it.

Has anyone else had this problem (I can't be that unique!) and found a way to correct it. Please post and let me know.

Thanks for all your help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have gone thru several threads regarding people putting items in the Recycle Bin only to have them not be visible when they open the RB (both in Windows XP and ME). Several of them stated the RB indicated a number of items when they click on "empty", but none of the items are showing. I have seen several answers regarding this - but one, which worked for this "dummy" was to remove the check on the recycle bin box in my Window Washer Program. Some of you may also have a cleaning program which is causing this? Took me quite a while to determine this was my problem. Always ready to share my computer ignorance with others. At least now I can get back my mistakes thrown in the RB. lol!

Good afternoon,
Hopefully someone has experienced this and can offer advice.

A user is deleting files, but they are not appearing in the recycle bin

- user is deleting from her computer, and not a network location, or flash drive
- computer is not partitioned - only has a "C" drive
- computer is W7 32-bit
- user is not a local admin
- Use has 6 different recycle bins (right-click on RB desktop icon > properties > recycle bin location); some of the locations are "My Pictures", "My Videos" etc.... We are not able to manage the size of
these locations.
- all of the RB locations are set to "Custom Size"
- have tried:
a. deleting everything out of the RB
b. (running as admin) RD /S /Q C:\$Recycle.bin
c. set to view hidden & system files/folders, gone to "C" and deleted the $RECYCLE.BIN folder. clicked yest at all the prompts, including: Do this for all current items

** after both b & c, rebooted the computer

So far, nothing has worked. Might anyone have any other suggestions?

A:Recycle Bin: deleted items not appearing in recycle bin

Hi jkotsonas, welcome to seven forums.

Not sure if this is your issue, but with different users, each will have his/her own recycle bin and as such, items from one user won't show in another user's bin.

Is this the issue?

Windows 7-SP1

This is only happening on my internal data drive ( E: ), system drive ( C: ) and external drives ( F:, G & H: ) are OK.

If I delete up to 6 items in a single operation (folders, files or a mixture) the items show up in the recycle bin. But if its 36 then 30 items will not be in the recycle bin, and the 6 that are there are not the first or last 6. If its 80 items then 74 wont be in the recycle.bin etc, etc, If I delete 200 items in a single operation from the C: drive then all 200 will be in the recycle bin.

Weird. I tried creating a fresh $recycle.bin on E: (by removing it), that didn't fix it.

This drive also contains E:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-117609710-2025429265-682003330-1004 which I believe is the recycle bin contents. If I remove this directory will windows create a fresh one?

I ran chckdsk on the drive in mid-May no errors reported and SMART say its healthy, anyway its not a hardware issue.

Edit: If you run sike in a command prompt with no params it shpws a usage dialog.

Ok..lets try this...

Download KillBox http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe

Click Red X to delete it or Simply Browse to the Directory under C:(root) called RECYCLER

In killbox you may also see in blue the term Directory
Click the Red X to delete it.

Reboot and see if that works. Windows will recreate that file on reboot. If this doesn't work...then it's likely the INFO file may be damaged. Read here on how to fix that...

When I delete files or shortcuts, they go to my Recycle Bin. The Recycle bin has an icon indicating there are items in it. When I click on the Recycle bin and open it, the deleted files show up for a second or two then disappear. So at this point I'm unable to select and restore deleted files. They are still in the recycle bin, since if I right click on the recycle bin it asks me do you want to delete # items.

I've checked the Recycle Bin properties, and it doesn't have the delete files immediately option selected. My folders properties are set to show all files and file extensions.

Any ideas?

Here are the instructions from the site that issues this patch:
To use the file: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

The website claims that this file will replace and\or repair the registry values for your recycle bin. The Firefox browser will not work when downloading the recycle bin patch. You will have to use Internet Explorer browser.

This patch is only for Windows XP.

Ive also tried deleting a test file on my 8.1 machine and nothing finds that either.

A:Can't recover items deleted from recycle bin

Hi HammerJeff Unfortunately, there's never a guaranteed way to recover a file that you deleted. When you delete a file, you have to be sure that you'll never need it back, because the chances of getting it back are really slim. Free data recovery software can only do so much, and none of them even guarantee that they'll recover anything and if they do, it won't be 100% of what was deleted. The same goes for paid software. If that client had important business files that are critical for his job, one solution could be to go to a data forensics company and get them to retrieve the deleted files from the drive. Assuming that no other major read/write operation has been done on the drive that could have completely ereased the trace of these files, they may be able to recover them. However, these kind of services are quite expansive so I hope for your client that if he pays for them, it's worth it.On a side note, the free software I use for data recovery are Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery and GetDataBackNTFS (there's a portable version made from the paid version). If these fails, I usually tell the person that there's nothing more I can do.Good luck with that client and the case.

I have just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium x64. Problem is that the recycle bin won't show deleted items. The bin just looks empty. If I click on empty recycle bin it prompts me if I want to delete these 16 (or whatever number) items, so they must be there but will not display. Am I correct that deleted "Recycle Bin" files still remain unseen on the hard drive? If so, is there any way of removing the deleted "Recycle Bin" items without affecting anything else on the HDD?

My original and now #2 computer has a very small HDD (15 GB). I have cleaned out everthing but the OS and installed programs. I would like to remove the one GB of "My Docs" files I put into the "Recycle Bin" and then further deleted from there, if indeed they are still resident on the HDD. My intent is to hopefully increase performance of that machine, which also has a very slow processor and only 190 MB RAM. Right now the OS and programs occupy one-half of the HDD. I am running "XP Home" on that computer.

I will only use C #2 for reaching the Internet should my #1 computer "go down." (I would be lost without that daily exercise!) C #1 is fully backed up weekly to an external HDD.

Thanks for your patience with me. {redoak}

A:Do deleted Recycle Bin items take HDD space?

When you put something in the "recycle bin" all windows does is hide the item from you and only allow you to see it via the waste bin. So it still counts towards how much space is being used on the hard drive. Once you delete items from the recycle bin they are no longer counted as used space on the hard drive. They are still there and sometimes recoverable but now the space is marked for Windows to reuse when it needs it.

Deleting items in the recycle bin should not effect anything else on your HDD.

If you want to delete something without it going in the recycle bin highlight the item and then hold down the shift key while pressing delete. Check the recycle bin and you won't see it. Beware that you can't recover an item if you do this.

I did a search on this and could not find anything. Once in awhile my desktop will have a bunch of random files I deleted a long time ago. I always empty it too. There won't be anything in the recycle bin or on the desktop and then I'll go to look at it after awhile and some other group of files will be there. I have tried the whole "rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin" on every drive on my computer. Windows is installed on C:. This is REALLY weird. It isn't even the same group of files each time, it is just random files I've deleted over the past 2 months. I use Windows XP. There is not a lot in the Recycle Bin - some goes back to last year. Some recent deletes are there. I deleted a large number of music files (mp3) and folders and only 3 of these files are in the recycle bin. The Recycle Bin settings are global and do not allow for auto delete. The disk space available is large.

History: My computer had been in storage for 16 mos and I have recently been updating everything. Prior to putting it in storage I had to have it professionally restored - they suspected it was a virus. The hardware was affected and as I continued to have odd things happen I added a portable hard drive and changed settings so that My Documents and all subfolders operated from this drive. That is the only drive on which I can find the recycle bin. On the C drive I found something called Recycler.

I am good at emptying my recycle bin, but in the process of doing updates and going through old files and programs I have intentionally not emptied it as I anticipated the chance for mistakes would be greater. I was right, unfortunately, little of what I have deleted is in the bin. Don't know why old stuff is there and so little of recently deleted files/folders can be found.

When I try to delete an item from or empty my entire deleted items folder I receive the following Message "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart outlook."

When I try to move any item from any folder to another folder I receive and error that says "Cannot Move the Items. The Folder is full."

When I try to archive items it will not archive and my archive log says that there was an error while archiving each folder.

When I send a message, rather than putting a copy of the message in my sent items folder it says my sent items folder is full and it will keep the message in my outbox but not resend it.

I work on a laptop and a desktop. I use an external 320 GB hard disk to save my files.
The laptop is running windows 7 home basic 64 bit (more than 2 years old) and The desktop is running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recently installed with formatting new pc).
The problem is..
If the HDD connected to the desktop and I delete any file from the HDD, the file appears in the recycle bin of the desktop but as I connect the HDD in laptop the files are not appear under recycle bin of the laptop. Likewise any file deleted from HDD appears in recycle bin of the laptop when the HDD connected to the laptop but not appears in the recycle bin when connected to the desktop.
Is it normal? I do not think so. If it is a problem then how can I correct it. I have tried windows troubleshooting -- performance check , HDD error check but no error can be find out in both computers.

Wish for your helpful suggestions.

A:Recycle bin not showing deleted files for an external hard drive

I think this is quite normal if I have read your post correctly. When you delete a file from your external HD the deleted file get transferred to the Recycle Bin of the computer you are using. When you change the external HD to your laptop then there is no record of those files as they have already been deleted & would still be the Recycle Bin of desktop, unless you have deleted them from there.

Having changed computers a couple of times and transported data over, the other day I used "DupDetector" to sort through and delete duplicate files.

Dupdetector found and deleted 14,000 odd duplicates. Before pressing "empty deleted items" and losing literally gigs of family photos I wanted to doublecheck that it had done this correctly, by re-running the comparison between "My Pictures" and "Deleted Items".

But dupdetector couldn't "see" the recycling bin to build an index in it. So I thought I would simply move all the deleted items into a separate folder it could see and run the comparison from there.

I did this by ctrl-A selecting all items in the recycling bin and dragging them to the new folder.

Weird thing is, they don't show up in the new folder - and they don't show up anymore in deleted items either. Have I somehow force deleted them without realising it?

I suspect that VISTA is still treating the items as deleted (I didn't "restore to original location" - I just dragged) and that's why they're not showing - but they're not in deleted items either.

To be clear I have not at any time "emptied" my deleted items folder so the files really ought to be somewhere.

any thoughts?

Hi all,
don't really know what's going on here but a while ago I deleted a bunch of stuff from my computer, but have noticed recently that the Vista start menu search function will keep returning these files in it's results.

for example, a a bunch of holiday results i moved to an external harddrive to put on another computer, are now visible in the results folder that appears, and in duplicate.

when i try to delete these files, Vista tells me that they're not there....(surprising that.) and won't remove them

all subsequent searches keep returning the files, and nothing seems to work.

thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this, and thanks for any help.

I had to reformat my hard drive in April due to a virus problem. I had a tech guy from Geeks on Call walk me through it and used all the proper CDs and necessary drivers according to him and Dell technical support both.

On a side note, Dell Technical Support is a nightmare. Geeks on Call was great though.

Anyway I am not pressing shift-delete. The "do not move files to recycle bin" box is not checked in the recycle bin's properties. It is set to take up to 100% of the drive if necessary. I currently run AVG, Ad Aware, and Spybot religiously as well as having Spybot T-Timer running at all times.

The Dell people said to reinstall Windows after a two hour chat session. Since reinstalling windows (following all directions, mind you) is what got me into this mess I would rather not do that. I do back up my data to an external hard drive but it still took me forever to get my laptop up and running after reformatting.

Nothing appears in the recycle bin- not when I use the delete key, not when I right click and select delete, not when I drag the files to the recycle bin.

I use Windows XP, I have done the service pack 2 thing, and this is all on a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop.

I don't know how much damage to your recycle bin, or your whole operating system for that matter, that program did. You should never use that type of software. It won't help you, and you'll end up having to reinstall Windows.
Not sure if it will be enough, but try THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

There's also a news website I go to http://www.ckpg.com/ and I can no longer see the displayed menu of news video clips.

What am I missing?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever I try to delete an item, or do anything with the deleted items folder, my PC locks up. I'm using outlook express 6.0 on a windows XP sp3 pc. Whenever I try to delete an item, the hour glass just keeps running. I cannot delete the deleted items folder, as well.

You may need to compact your folders
You can go to the maintenance location and copy all the folders ending in .dbx files to another part of your computer for a backup and look at the article in the provided link.
Good Luck with it.

That is 1,176,395 KB. I can't touch it. In outlook or the dbx file. I get the message that it is too big. Any attempt to delete, move, rename, etc says "File or directory is corrupt or unreadable".
Below is C/P of the "Deleted Items" folder in OE:
Folder could not be displayed
Outlook Express could not open this folder.
Possible causes are:

<LI id=ridResolution1>Low disk space.
Low memory.
I need to delete this folder and I can't tell if it is displaying anything in OE.
I have compacted. It took about a minute because its all mostly empty. The DBX files, on the other hand are not!

I run WinXP Pro SP2, and TrendMicro Anti-Spyware 3.0 (trial) informs me there is about 113KB of previously deleted files from the Recycle Bin that have not been fully deleted.

How do I delete these previously deleted files? Is there a free tool available that will accomplish this?

Download Cleanup from Here

A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
Click OK

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.
Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:
Run Cleanup:
Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
Once its done, close the program.
Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Recently, I've noticed that downloading files onto my desktop won't show up on my desktop. By that I mean I actually have to go to C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Desktop to actually see the file. When I try to drag the file from that folder onto my desktop, it would say the source and the destination are the same, even though the file doesn't visually show up on my desktop.

I haven't changed resolutions and I made sure to change it in case any of them were hiding. I also did an auto-arrange for all icons to see if they would show up that way.

Just to add more info, I just renamed a folder on my desktop screen, but the name doesn't change
When I try to access it, it doesn't work; gives me an error and says that I'm looking for a target that doesn't exist (or some message to that effect).
But when I go to C:\Doc....I see the folder with the new name, and can access it from there.

Also, right click -> refresh seems to do the trick to "update" my desktop, but it doesn't fix the problem should more files be added to the desktop, or should files be renamed.

Any solutions or guesses on what's going on?

Hi - I have a Laptop running Outlook Express 6 on XP. I also have a PC running Thunderbird on Vista. The Laptop and PC both run on the same LAN. The Laptop Outlook Express and PC Thunderbird applications both use the same email account. They are both configured with and synced via IMAP.

Here's the problem. When I delete an email (Input or Sent Items) message on my Laptop (Outlook Express 6), it never reached the Laptop's "Deleted Items" folder. It disappears. My attempt to fix the problem is this: I located and deleted my Laptop's (Deleted Items.dbx) file and then restarted Outlook Express 6. I attempted this 2x; the 2nd time I rebooted the Laptop. NO HELP - the problem persists.

Any suggestions for fixing or troubleshooting this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I can isolate the problem, the TBird and LAN are not the issue. Are you merely trying to recreate a working Delete Folder. If so, just delete and reinstall OE either from a disc or download. You won't lose your messages if you follow these instructions: How to Reinstall Outlook Express Without Losing Old Emails | eHow
In the future, remember to Compact All Folders regularly in both OE and TBird.
