We are wanting to up-grade our current Office suite Office 2003 to either Office 2010 or Office 2013. Our PC's are running Windows 7
I would just like to know what peoples opinions and advice is on this?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I can't speak to Office 2013, but I've done numerous upgrades to Office through 2010. When you install the new version, you have the option to keep the old version or just replace it. Starting with Office 2007 the familiar menu bar has been replaced with the ribbons which take a lot of getting used to for folks used to older versions. There's a little program called UbitMenu that will add most of the menu bar functions back in the 2007 and 2010 versions that a lot of folks find helpful. If you do opt to have two different versions installed at the same time, what happens is that when you switch from one to the other, it goes through a juggling act that takes a minute or so. It's a bit of a pain, but if you need it, it could be a convenience.
Last spring, I had to fresh install XP Pro on my laptop and thought that it would be a good idea to buy Office 2003 Professional to replace my old Office 2000. I love it and find that I am very frustrated with the 2000 Pro on my office computer. So, I just bought another 2003 Pro and I have no idea how to proceed to upgrade. Do I uninstall all of the current Office programs? Do I simply stick the disk in the CD drive and let Windows figure it out? Do I build a fire in the parking lot and do a dance? I was successful with a new installation when I did the fresh install. But I do not want to lose all of my Outlook e-mails attachments, and contacts. I have benefited a great deal from the help here in the past. I hope that someone can guide me in the simplest possible way. I am a relative novice/greenhorn.
Each MS Office edition...is a distinct entity, there really is no such thing as an "upgrade" from one version to another.
You could conceivably install each and they would both work, because they are independent of each other.
I suggest uninstalling the version you don't like...install the version that you do like . That's what I do.
You will need the CD for each to uninstall or install.

durning the install my nvidia drivers kept stopped responding. this problem stopped after office 2013 was installed and updated.
and later I found out my vmware installation was messed up and missing files. was working before.
what the heck happpend, I dont know..........office 2010 decided to take revenge? if it was going out . it was taking everyone out with it. lol
Are you running Windows in your VMWare installation or is your WMWare installation on your Windows machine?
It sounds like (drivers aside) there were some shared filed that may have been wiped that VMWare was using that belonged to Office 2010.
Any idea when Office 2013 will be available for download / upgrade?
it's in the Ms store already -- although IMO I'd stick to Office 2010 if I were you.

What you'd do to get the upgrade price I don't know but Office 2013 IS available for download. Try phoning / emailing -- actually a better option these days is to use a FAX believe it or not for this type of question. Emails tend to get lost as people have 100'000's to deal with, phone calls are diabolical --endless menu systems, loads of waiting and people on the other side of the planet who are incredibly difficult to understand.
The lowly fax machine when it chatters into life usually gets INSTANT attention these days . !!

We have installed Office 2013 (64bit) on 13workstations, but found out that clients require Office 2010 (32bit) for some programs that are linked.
We removed the Office 2013 (64bit) and installed Office 2010 (32bit).
Everything looks okay up until we try to do Office 2010 repair process.
We are getting the attached error screen..
I tried Wiindows Installer Cleanup utility but i couldnt find any traces of Office 2013.

Removing Office completely can be difficult. Refer to the website below. This explains how to remove Office 2013. You may have to remove office 2010 as well & then reinstall office 2010.
well i just installed office 2010 and during install you get the option to click for the free Office 2013 download.

As you can see, are 2 different things.
I just installed a copy of Office 2013 on a Pc (actually Win7) that already had Office 2010 on it. I was having problems getting an Exchange logon working and for some reason, upgrading to 2013 fixed the problem. I am working with 32-bit in both cases.
The copy of Office 2013 is working great. It noted there was a copy of 2010 there and copied all the information from the 2010, essentially doing an upgrade.
Now I'd like to remove the copy of 2010 and I'm wondering if that will destroy 2013 as well, somehow. The only strange thing I noted is I initially went into Mail-32 in the control panel to add the exchange logon and it added it to Outlook 2010 (sure, now it works on 2010...grrrh!), so I had to go into Outlook 2010 and remove the exchange account and then add the exchange account inside of Outlook 2013, which worked just fine.
So, I'm thinking if I uninstall Office 2010, then mail-32 will auto point to the 2013 version of Outlook. And I'd just like to get the 2010 version off anyway. But not if it's going to be a problem for Office 2013.
I've looked around the Internet and didn't find anything pointing directly at this situation. If leaving 2010 out there is the simplest solution, I'm OK with that. Thanks ahead of time.
I have been in the situation where I bought a new pc that had a trial version of MS Office 2010 already installed. I installed a full version of MS Office 2007 and uninstalled the MS 2010 trial version later with no problems.
This was a case where I had MS Office 2007 installed on my work computer and my company had a site license that allowed you to also install a copy at home. That's why I choose the 2007 version over the 2010 version.
On my husbands computer we are running Office pro 2010 on Windows 7.I would like to upgrade it to Office pro 2013. But in Outlook 2010 he has like 40 folders with subfolders full of emails. When i upgrade will Outlook 2013 grab all the settings, folders, emails and put them in correctly? I know office 2013 does not go onto of office 2010 because i did it on my own computer but i do not use outlook on mine, i use WLM so i do not remember what it did for outlook because i do not remember if i put an account in there after i installed it or not. I did mine months ago, call it a senior moment.

I do have a .pst backup just in case but sometimes when putting this back it messes up everything and i do not want to spend hours fixing it nor a divorce (lol) over this.

Hello: I brought my MS Office to my new computer a few months ago. That version was/is 2010 on a windows XP. I now have the 2013 version of MicroSoft Office it is however the 64 bit version on a machine running windows 7 Home Premium.
I am concerned about losing my data over the transition.
I received the message that it is not possible to instal the 64 bit version until the 32 bit version is removed.
I would be very grateful if someone would provide guidance on the correct order and steps to accomplish this change over. The Data is backed up. I would not like to lose the Data in the various programs.

Why on earth do people insist on using these 3rd party uninstaller apps for BOG STANDARD Microsoft applications --Ms OFFICE is one of the most used pieces of software on earth so installing / uninstalling it should be a breeze via STANDARD uninstall method.
Had you simply uninstalled via control panel then the entire problem would not exist.
Your 3rd party uninstaller obviously hasn't done its job properly as there is still some indication on your machine that Microsoft Update thinks you still have Office 2010 installed.
IMO 3rd party apps are better left for NON OS type applications - things like installing / uninstalling / updating software should be left to the OS itself. Very few 3rd party apps IMO should be allowed to interfere with the internal functions of the OS itself -- even AV software - but that's another issue.
My solution here would be to either restore your syste to a time before you installed the "Uninstaller" app or re-install a clean copy of windows, re-install the version of office you want and apply the updates.
Note -- when Ms updates programs it might make all sorts of registry changes "on the fly" and it's impossible for a 3rd party uninstaller to be able to handle or even find all these changes.
I'm running Windows 7 on my new computer, which came with a trial version of Office 2010. Rather than buy the full version when the trial expired, I installed the Office 2003 I had on my old -- now dead -- computer. I now find that I can't open the Word and Excel files I created with the 2010 version. Is there a 'cloud' site where I could send the 2010 files and have them returned to me as standard .xls and .doc files? Or is there a free converter available for download?

I did an upgrade installation from Office 2003 PRO to Office 2010 PRO. I had several issues with Access denied on C:\Config.msi. I usually select retry and all is well. I think I may have missed one of the retries before I did the system restart.
Now I get an error 2203 whenever I reboot, and the Office 2003 installer keeps popping up anytime I try to do anything.
I tried uninstalling Office 2003 and was told that I had a corrupted install. I tried re-installing it and it seems to just hang.
I also tried to uninstall and repair Office 2010.
I'm at a loss at this point.

Hey guys, my wife is taking a course that requires her to install Office 2010. The issue is that she wants to preserve her current setup which includes Office 2003 and 2007 existing side-by-side on her Windows 7 (64-bit Home Edition) notebook.
The 2003/2007 setup is not one that she really wants to mess with (i.e., she has no interest whatsoever in uninstalling the two Office suites that she currently has), so ideally she would like to have Office 2010 installed temporarily (for the duration of her course) on the machine without interfering with the current setup.
What is the most painless way of doing this that does not involve shelling out for a second computer?

I had a similar situation here but in the end I opted out.
I removed both Office 2003 and 2007 and installed 2010, I then used virtual XP and installed 2003 there, 2007 and 2010 are too similar and the dll's will 'bite' along the way.
Even my 2003 and 2007 gave me issues after some time.
Have you checekd what the Microsoft Support site says?

Having upgraded my desktop PC to Office 2010, I need to import three seperate letter template files for use in Word. These were lost during the upgrade but are on my laptop, which still runs Office 2003, as .dot type files and I also have them copied to a memory stick. However, I am at a loss as to how and where to save them into the new programme on my desktop PC. If it makes a difference, I should add that I do not use Libraries and have disabled them.

Problem solved - with a bit of advice from a friend! Unsurprisingly, it's very simple.
- Open the document in Word
- Click "Save As"
- Scroll to top of folder list and, under "Microsoft Word", click "Templates"
- Name the template and select "Word Template" in the "Save As Type" list
- Save it
I still don't know where they are saved to but I can now call them up and use them.
I use now MSOffice 2003 but want to upgrade to the Student version 2010 which comes without Access.
Does the Access from MS Office 2003 work in tandem with MSOffice 2010?

1. I was previously working on a 32-bit Compaq computer that ran Windows XP, and I used Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 for my work.
2. I bought a new computer, a 64-bit Dell running Windows 7 Professional, which came equipped with Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010.
3. Because I prefer the MS Word program on Office 2003 to 2010, I installed that on my new computer with the proper keycode. (During setup, I chose only to install the old Word 2003 -- not the old Outlook, Excel or Powerpoint programs.)
4. Installation was successful. The Office 2010 files reside in the Programs directory; the Office 2003 files reside in the Programs (x86) directory.
5. I then instructed Windows 7 to open .doc and .docx files with the 2003 Office Word program.
6. The problem is: Whenever I choose Word 2003 from the Program menu (or click on an actual doc file), I receive the msinstall message, "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Standard Edition" for about ten seconds. Then Word 2003 opens. I checked the Windows Event Viewer, which indicates that during this hang, either Word 2003 or Word 2010 is apparently looking for components it can't find.

When you switch between an Office 2010 program and an older Office program, it goes through that configuring process. I read somewhere that this is because each version of Office has entries in the registry with the same names but are set differently so it has to go through this little gooney bird dance. If it's the ribbons (and lack of the menu bar) you don't like in Office 2010, there's a neat little program called Ubitmenu you can download and install that gives you an old style menu bar with most of the Office 2003 features on it.

I have to keep EXCEL 32 bit as I have some addin's that don't work on the 64 bit version (EXCEL 2010).
I HATE outlook 2013 so the restriction on Outlook is fine by me. Mixing the 32 and 64 bit versions is my main concern here.
(Note you have to have office 2010 already installed to enable the "Side by Side" feature apparently -- not tried it yet).

Please posters who have actually TRIED this combination (on ANY version of 64 bit Windows 8). One often get posts like "It *should be possible*, or I don't THINK it will work. I don't actually like office 2013 -- I intend for all sorts of reasons sticking with office 2010 but there will be times when I have to run office 2013 and I really don't want to have to set up a separate Virtual machine just for that - or another Windows to Go system.

I found another on Technet, but like a dummy I left the page, and, for some reason, couldn't find the reference again. It said 64 and 32 bit versions cannot be installed on the same machine.

There's no upgrade license for Office 2010. It should install just fine over whatever version you have, and it will install just fine on a computer without any previous version installed.
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a Dell Studio 17. It came with Office 2007 trial which was a bad experience.
I have a MS Basic Office 2003 license and want the best legal way to upgrade at minimum cost.
In the end I need a license for 2010.

I would say, BOX Store, and get only what you need. If Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Onenotes is fine, then get the Home and student. This comes with a license for three (3) machines, for less than $150.00 US.
But if you need Outlook, then you will have to get the Pro version or better.
I need to have Office 2003 and Office 2010 installed on the same computer. They won't be running at the same time, but both will be used occassionally so both of them must be installed.
I read somewhere that this is not officially supported but possible.
What's the proper way of doing so? Do I install the Office 2003 first and then 2010?
Is there a way to prevent the setup from running each time I'm switching between the versions? It takes up a lot of time and I think it's unneccessarry.
I want to set Office 2003 as default and I want Office 2010 to start ONLY if I start it manually or I choose to open a file only supported by the new version (like docx etc)

I have been running Office 2003 since it first came out and continue to run it on virtually all my computers. I have one recently purchased computer with Win7 and thought I would try Office 2010. Aside from the amazingly awkward interface and organization of things, I have noticed:
far more problems with corrupted files in Office2010 than in Office2003
Further, when I send documents via email between computers I find that some .docx files arrive as .dat files. Does not ever happen when files are simply move across the network
xls files created in xl2003 run much faster in their native environment than when translated into xl2010 and run in that environment (benchmarks on the two computers suggest that they are about = re performance)

A charity is considering upgrading its workstations to Office 2013 from Office 2007.
They have lots of files in the .docx, .xlsx, .xlsm, and .xltm formats that they would need to access on a daily basis.
- Would the upgrade cause compatability problems with working with files created under these above formats?

We have an upgrade on our computer units here in the company, my problem is when users save their 2007 excel files an error pops up, Errors were detected while saving "File Name". Microsoft maybe able to save the file by removing or repairing some features. To make the repairs in new file, click Continue. To cancel saving the file, click Cancel.
By the way, the files were save on the file server and users access them through single roaming profile that we created with full access on their folders.

Office 2016 Installation Routine Deleting Older Stand-alone Apps
I can't say I wasn't warned. I was part way through installing Microsoft Office 2016 on my primary workstation when I got a message that said, "Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016." The error message went on to say that if I decided to continue anyway, my copy of Microsoft Visio Standard 2013 would be removed. Since I had the original disk from when I purchased the software, I went ahead. Bad move. It turns out that when Microsoft says that Visio 2013 won't work with Office 2016, it means it won't even have the chance to work. Any attempt to reinstall the software will be thwarted. The fact that you paid for the software is beside the point. You're basically out of luck. When I went to the Microsoft community forums, which is where Microsoft handles much of its tech support, I discovered that I wasn't alone. Apparently hundreds of people who'd purchased stand-alone Microsoft Office products were affected, and they weren't happy about it.
Furthermore, the problem extended far beyond Visio. Users with Microsoft Project, Publisher, Access, InfoPath and SharePoint Designer were also affected. Likewise, Microsoft customers who purchased Office Apps that are normally part of Office suites but may have been purchased separately, such as Outlook 2013, were also affected.

Every office application I open seems to have a classic unthemed title bar and not maximise correctly. When opening an office application a number of things happen:
The application opens behind any open windows
The application when maximised appears to be open full screen with in an invisible frame
Drop down lists within the application instantly close when clicked on
Here are few images showing what I mean:
Steps taken to try to rectify the problem:Reinstalled Office after having used Revo Uninstaller to remove any left over traces
Rolled back to a time I don't believe the problem existed, thought this may have existed from the start but never realised due to lack of use
Reinstalled Graphics Card drivers
Turned off any OS resizing options
Tried changing the OS theme back to default
Tried changing the screen resolution
I should also mention that this only affects office applications and no other applications seem to have any issues like this.
I know I can get around the issue of it being maximised, as can be seen from the screenshot. The issues with dropdown boxes etc is a pain, any help you guys can give would be appreciated
Have you tried an Office repair. This is how to do it with Windows 7, Open Control Panel, select Programs & Features, scroll down to Microsoft Office 2013 & Right Click on it & select Change & this will show a couple of Repair options to try. Hi, is there any way of backing up all email accounts in Outlook 2013 (including username+password) and restoring them in Outlook 2016 without having to manually recreate the accounts? Thanks
You didn't say what types of accounts they are, but mostly likely there isn't a way, unless there is a third-party tool or these are Exchange accounts.Read other answers

You better check into the fine points about the licensing terms.
Including these questions:
Can the product be installed on more than 1 PC at a time and are there any restrictions as to the type of PC: desktop, laptop, etc?
Is the product restricted to the first PC to which it is installed or can it be installed to any single PC in the future, without restrictions?
Do you get a factory-made retail disc or just a download of some type that must be burned to a disc?
Are there recurring fees, such as a monthly or annual charge? Or do you pay just once and never again?
It seems that Microsoft's goal in the long term is to drive everyone toward recurring fees, like a subscription that must be renewed for the software to continue to function. You can avoid that with Office 2010 if you buy the right type of license. I'm not sure about 2013.
And you need to understand which of the Office applications are included: Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, etc, etc. There are numerous packages with different names.
Functionally, you won't find major differences and can become accustomed to either.
I'd worry most about the licensing details.
I have MS Office Professional 2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, Access). I needed to install MS Project 2013 for a class that I'm taking.
Long story short, I now cannot use my 2010 stuff. The computer only recognizes 2013. (Would have been nice if I had gotten a warning when I was installing)

As for having two Windows office versions on your computer SAFELY, you would need a dual boot system, one office version for each booting partition. You could create a third partition for all the files you save so you could easily access them from either booting partition.

Office 2013 updates in the background & does not show up in the usual Windows Updates section. I am using Office 2013 Pro & I have it set for installing updates automatically.
It would be best just to let any updates that are required to be installed. Often certain updates are incorporated to cover a few versions of Office as they earlier ones need it so they incorporate it to cover all the applicable versions, which may also include later versions.
Therefore just leave it alone as fiddling with updates often causes trouble. Also it is just a whole lot of unnecessary work for you.
Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.
Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".
I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.
I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

i remember with windows xp and office, you could go to a different part of the microsoft windows update website in Internet Explorer, and it would prompt you with ActiveX to allow updates for Office, and after you did that then when you went to the normal windows (xp) update site there would be a whole other section of updates for microsoft office available. That was with office 2007 anyway.
i use a dell restore cd for windows 7 professional, on a dell pc obviously, to install win7 from scratch.
I can do windows updates no problem.
I have microsoft office 2010 professional plus with a valid license key, these are provided by my IT dept.
Office installs fine, during the install i can go through the options and install excel, powerpoint, all shared tools, and so on. Once installed, it works fine. There is no service pack installed at this point.
From here if I go windows update, I never see anything for office.
From within office, Microsoft Word file menu help for example, it shows office is activated and if i click on check for updates there it then opens an IE window which says updates can be done from start menu - programs - windows update. If i do that, it's a normal windows operating system update and I get nothing for office.
I have manually downloaded from microsoft, Office 2010 SP1 and SP2, and have installed either one.

You mean what's called Microsoft Update. If you go in to the settings in Windows Update, do you have this checked:
I have Office 2013 Pro Plus, but the click-to-run version which updates itself and is not part of Windows Update. But I don't think there's a click-to-run version for 2010 Pro Plus so that is probably not the issue here.
My MS Office files have generic icons, and when I open them, Windows asks me which program to use. Office 2010 isn't even on the list. A trial version of Office 2007 came with my laptop. I downloaded the Office 2010 beta, then uninstalled 2007. Since I uninstalled the old Office, all my Office files are no longer associated with Office, and there seems to be no way to remarry them. Office 2010 (beta) doesn't appear in the default programs control panel. The only way I can open those files is to open Word/Excel/etc, and File>Open. I feel like this should be simple. Any ideas?
Did you uninstall 2007 after you installed 2010?
If so you messed things up and you need to do a repair. Open Word, then the Office button, and then Word Options.
There on the Resources area, run diagnostics and do a repair.
Okay, I've never posted on anything like this before so bear with me please. I've got an issue and it's driving me nuts because I can't resolve it. I'll try and give a description of what I did. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I purchased a new Dell computer (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) that came with a trial version of Office 2010. I had previously purchased an Office 2010 Pro so I wanted to install the full version on my computer. When I did, I had both versions installed, so I uninstalled the trial version. That's when I think my problem arose, but I can't say for sure that it didn't exist before that because I hadn't even looked.
Here's the problem:
When I'm in Windows Explorer looking at my files, my Excel and Word files (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx) show up with an improper file type description. Instead of saying "Microsoft Word Document" or "Microsoft Excel 1997-2003 Worksheet" (or whatever they're supposed to say) the simply say "DOCX File" or "XLS File". Not only that, but the icons don't look right either. They sort of look right, but they're smaller and sort of greyed out (Except the .docx icon is just a white page with lines object).
The strange thing is, is that ALL my other Office files show up with correct descriptions and icons etc. (.ppt, .pptx, .csv....etc - ALL of them!)

I have a few questions concerning the Installation of 2010 Office. I know that I have to uninstall Office 2007. I have no clue on how to save or where to save my documents from Office 2007. The documents consist of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and a few various folders. Should I from the Start Menue click on Documents select all and copy. Where should I place this copy? Can It be left on my hard drive? After I install Office 2010 can I then copy the "Document File" and place in Documents. Will all the files end up in the proper place for their programs, Word files go to Word, Excel goes to Excel so on and so forth. Thank you so much for all your help and cooperation. But you don't have to uninstall Office 2007 to upgrade to 2010. That's the general rule as you can generally upgrade from lower SKUs to higher SKUs (Small Business to Pro Plus). As far as saving your documents, you can really save them wherever you like on your hard drive or on any CD or flash drive if you wish to do so. As far as file types, after 2010 is installed, they should all register properly for their programs so that Word documents open in Word, Excel Documents in Excel, etc.
Though if you have all of you documents already saved within "Documents" or "My Documents" or some other folder you've set aside and you want to uninstall 2007 before upgrading to 2010, the documents themselves will be retained when you uninstall, you just won't be able to really do much with them until you install 2010.
I am running a copy of Office 2007 Ultimate that I got through an academic program. I need to install a key for Office 2010 on a new system. The cost for the key only is about $20 less than a 3 license traditional disk version, so I am considering upgrading every system.
However, I don't want to lose MS Access or MS Publisher to upgrade.
If I install Office 2010 Home & Student over Office 2007 Ultimate, will the extra programs from Office 2007 still be available to me? I know they will not be upgraded, but having a few different versions floating around doesn't bother me.

I have Office 2010 Standard Open License Version installed on 7 XP Pro machines. We discovered, when trying to open a .tif file, that Document Imaging has been removed from Office 2010. I found and followed instructions in KB982760 from the MS web site. I got lots of parts of Office 2007, including Word, but still no Document Imaging. I tried going through Add/Remove Programs to add the feature; still no luck. Has anyone been successful getting Document Imaging from a previous version of Office to run under 2010?
When I first got my computer (Windows 7 Home Premium SP1), it had a preinstalled trial version of Microsoft Office 2007. I removed it via the control panel (Programs and Features) and installed Office 2010. However, I still get Office 2007 updates via Windows Update. They even installed successfully.
There are no Office 2007 components listed under Programs and Features.
Why am I getting Office 2007 updates although I've got only Office 2010?...

I do not have Office 2010 installed. Office 2007 is installed.
My security software keeps telling me I am at risk because my operating system is not up to date.

If your computer is relatively new, it may have come with a trial install of Office 2010 - check the Start menu, and the Programs & Features listing.
You may also have installed Viewers for things like PowerPoint 2010, which still require updates.
it's possible that Office was installed improperly, i cannot open any other non Windows app, they all open to Office Word. is this a virus?
