ThinkPad W541 - Intel Quick Sync will not work and internal mic(s) will NOT mute either

Q: ThinkPad W541 - Intel Quick Sync will not work and internal mic(s) will NOT mute either

Hi there, I own a ThinkPad W541 in basically stock condition (only alteration has been to add a second 8GB Samsung DDR3 stick, same part number, and a 1TB Hitachi internal 2.5" hard drive in the Ultra Bay since I don't need the optical drive). I am running Windows 7 Professional x64 with the latest drivers for all devices as provided by Lenovo System Update. My issue is that I'm attempting to make use of the Intel Quick Sync video encoding capability that's part of the Intel Core i7-4810MQ CPU in this laptop (it's actually provided by the Intel HD 4600 GPU) and I'm not having any luck whatsoever. As noted, the drivers currently in use for the Intel HD 4600 GPU are the ones provided by Lenovo itself: 23.21.13.8875 (NVIDIA Graphics Driver)
1.3.36.6 (NVIDIA HD Audio Driver)
10.18.14.4414 (Intel Graphics Driver)
6.16.00.3174 (Intel HD Audio Driver) and so far as noted I've had zero success with getting Quick Sync to function. I'm attempting to use the standalone x264 encoder, and I've also attempted to use HandBrake which does see that the Quick Sync encoder IS there and IS available (this snippet of the HandBrake encoding log is offered as proof): [05:22:57] CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4810MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz[05:22:57] - Intel microarchitecture Haswell[05:22:57] - logical processor count: 8[05:22:57] Intel Quick Sync Video support: yes[05:22:57] - Intel Media SDK hardware: API 1.17 (minimum: 1.3)[05:22:57] - H.264 encoder: yes[05:22:57] - preferred implementation: hardware (any) via D3D11[05:22:57] - capabilities (hardware): breftype vsinfo opt1 opt2+mbbrc+extbrc+trellis+ib_adapt+nmpslice[05:22:57] - H.265 encoder: no but again whenever I call upon it to actually do the encoding, there's almost zero use of the GPU (as measured by GPU-Z) during the encode process - it's all pure CPU encoding and it's getting frustrating trying to figure out why this is *NOT* working as designed. I'm guessing the Nvidia Optimus crap and this device being set up without an actual discrete GPU (the K2100M is basically nothing more than a 3D accelerator just as the original 3dfx Monster I and II cards were). It was a poor decision on Intel and Nvidia and even Lenovo's part to make this hardware work in this manner. This laptop is still under warranty, actually, so I'd really love to get some kind of explanation about why this isn't working as it's designed to work but I can't be sure any actual Lenovo tech support or engineers might be around this community forum to help me understand what it's not working the way it's supposed to. If anyone has any tips - and believe me I've spent hours attempting to get this working, I've attached external monitors as some forum posts at other websites offered, and disconnected them, and changed the Windows display options to "Extend the displays" and still nothing ever works. As a side issue, the internal mic(s) will NOT mute even when using the Lenovo - Microphone Mute applet, nor using the hardware key combo (Fn + F4 and yes the orange light comes on to signify it's "working"). No matter what I do the internal mic(s) will never ever actually mute for any reason and I end up having to disable the device entirely in the Recording mixer of Windows 7 to make it not pick anything up. This is not something that should be happening, and again I'm using the latest Realtek HD audio drivers as pulled down with Lenovo System Update (6.0.1.8409 dated 03/27/18).It's highly frustrating to own a high end piece of hardware (even if it's approaching 3 years of age) that can't do what it's built to do.Thanks for any information or suggestions that can actually help me resolve this.Have fun, always...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So i cant use Intel Quick Sync and other features.I can't update the driver manually, because i will loose the switchable graphics feature. Is there any new driver with Intels 9.17.X and latest AMD driver? i tried the driver from the E420 or E520, even the Win8 drivers, but nothing worked...

Hope there's someone tech savy enough out there to help. Basic problem is that the onboard (iGPU) graphics adapter is for some reason disabled when my graphics card is installed, preventing me from using intel quick sync for video encoding. This is a bit of an issue since the on board hd2000 graphics are not just underwhelming but a joke at this point. (If not when they were released.) Are there any alternative drivers or firmware to unlock my mobo so I can run the iGPU and my graphics card in parralel? I don't even need to run a monitor from it, just need it unlocked to enable quick sync.

A:Aspire x3990 intel quick sync

have you checked on BIOS if you can enable or disable the integrated GPU?the automatic switching from integrated to add-on GPU is normal on this kind of BIOS. have you checked if your system has already the latest BIOS? P01.B2http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_P01.B2_A_A.zip?acerid=634532355777458822... if you already have the latest and option is still not available, i think only a modded BIOS can probably handle this but we can't talk about it here, there are other speicalized community.

My Thinkpad s3 Yoga 14 laptop stuck on mute. The soundbar to the right displays mute and the soundbar itself won't go away. On startup the mute LED light keeps flickering. The laptop lags and I have to go to task manager to End the processes "Thinkpad Message Client Loader" and and "Thinkpad message Receiver for Shortcut Hot Keys" for the the laptop to stop lagging (CPU is 100% on startup for some reason which may account for the reason of lagging). I have updated every driver with Driver Easy and Lenovo System Update. I have tried disabling then renabling and rolling back audio drivers but to no avail. I even uninstalled then reinstalled audio drivers. I have also gone to volume mixer, playback devices and recording devices but according to it the speaker works fine. I tried adjusting the volume in volume mixer but it keeps coming back down just as always.  The main problem is that the sound is stuck on mute and I just want it resolved. I have gone through days searching through Lenovo forums on what to do.

I've owned a W541 for about 22 months now, and I do have several videogames installed on it. Within the past week, it has started to become sluggish. It seems that if I have more than one task open at a time (Chrome + Firefox or Chrome + Game) it's performance starts to halt. The following day (don't shut down laptop, I just close it), it eventually gets to the point that switching between tabs or even closing out of a window take 15 seconds to resolve. However, I can still play back video and browse content fairly well once they're done loading, it's just switching, ending, or starting them that's awful. Disk use also jumps to 100%, but it's just the "System" process running at ~1.5 mb/s. I've scanned my laptop with LSC and it reports that everything is in working order and there's nothing to worry about. Restarting my laptop returns it to normal, but it's back to being sluggish the next day. Anyway to remediate this?

Hello guys,  For the last two weeks now my laptop has been making some bad BSODs.When it's not plugged everything all right no problems at all, but when I want to use it while charging it it will take 1 or 2 minutes and crash. I need to charge it closed and then when it's full, deplug it and work, quite inefficient... Also, when it crashes it automaticly crashes when restarting as well, I need to "startup and repair"  and then restore if I want to be able to open it. What do you think guys ? Is it the battery, the PSU or anything else ? It's 1 year old, I've put an SSD and a RAM stick in it, but it worked perfectly before these last 2 weeks.I also purchased the bigger battery with it (this one:0C52864). Don't worry to ask if you think there is not enough information.

HI everybody,I accidentally spilled sugared tea on the keyboard and nothing but sticky keys happened. This bothered me because sometimes was not a problem and sometimes the space bar for instance was hard to use, this perhaps due to temperature.I decided to download the Hardware manual, and assisted by it, I removed the keyboard and trackpad so as to clean them. The keys got cleaned decently, so as the trackpad. I noticed that one not-in-use connector at right of the trackpad connector had a little drop in three or four wires on it's back side, but I could clean it decently too. When I finally assembled it and started the machine, the keyboard didn't work, not even a single key. The Fn and F2 led lights were on, and the F4 led was on but dimmed. After checking the connections several times, finally not a single led on the keys remained on.The final outcome came later when I found out that the speakers started an impossible to stop sound similar to the busy tone of a phone, but a little faster in pace. Audio works fine, but this tone is superimposed, reacts to volume adjustment, but I cannot find a way to shut it up.Does anyone has a clue on what is happening?Does anyone advices to buy a spare keyboard or is there a way to check if I may have ruined a different component and the keyboard is not the only problem? Many thanks in advance!

My ThinkPad W541 crashes and restarts on an almost daily basis now. In Windows 10, if I go to View Event Logs -> Windows Logs -> System I see Critical events with Kernel-Power is the source: 2/3/2018 1:44:56 AM2/4/2018 12:58:29 AM2/4/2018 8:18:56 PM2/6/2018 9:44:39 PM I'm also seeing lots of WHEA-Logger entries:  A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Corrected Machine Check
Error Type: Internal parity error
Processor APIC ID: 4

The details view of this entry contains further information.https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3567.event-id-18-microsoft-windows-whea-... discusses this error some but pretty much says the error can come from anywhere. I tried to do a ram test with Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and that didn't show any RAM issues so I have no clue. I was thinking the easiest thing to do now would to send it to the depot for diagnostic / repair (it's still under warranty). The problem I have with that proposal is two fold. I'd just not ship it off with the hard drive inside it, which I imagine could hinder diagnostic. The problem is intermittent enough such that I can't guarantee the depot will if I were to mail it back to them.Any ideas?

A:ThinkPad W541 keeps crashing - should i send it in for warranty repair?

Personally I would do the following if I were in your situation.1. Do HDD and RAM swap (If you have spare). If you have dual or quad RAM then maybe try running single RAM first to see if problem persist. If able to narrow down to RAM or HDD then at least the service guys can just CRU the part to you instead of sending the whole laptop in. Also personally when it comes to random reboot, memtest doesn't do justice based on previous experiences.2. Ship the laptop to service partner without the HDD however do inform them that its an intermittent issue however if you have any way to "trigger" the issue then it would be great. Example using Chrome or any specific application then the chances of it random rebooting is higher.

At my wits end! These are the devices:

Windows 7 enterprise x64 on a lenovo thinkpad w541.

Sony mdr-zx770bn bluetooth headset

I can 'pair' the devices (inasmuch as an 'MDR-ZX770BN' icon shows in Devices and Printers). But drivers are never located. I get "bluetooth peripheral device - driver not found". In Device Manager, I get three new yellow-flagged devices in the 'other devices' category.

Sony's website says there are no drivers for this headset (implying, I suppose, that I should use the built-in Windows drivers). Their website explicitly mentions that this headset is supported by Windows 7.

Contacted Sony chat support and wasted about 45 minutes with them, other than to confirm that indeed there are no Sony drivers for this headset, and that indeed the headset is supported by Windows 7. They told me to contact Microsoft.

Microsoft's website has information on my error message: obtain the driver from the peripheral's manufacturer.

I'm now stuck in FPP (finger-pointing purgatory).

However I found one ray of light: I found a couple of threads in various forums that recommend manually updating the drivers of the unknown devices to use the Microsoft "Standard serial over Bluetooth link". I did so, and now Device Manager sees four new entries under Ports (COM and LPT): four different instances of the serial-over-bluetooth driver, each using a different COM port (COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7).

I did a properties of the headset's bluetooth icon in Device... Read more

Hi all, Just recently got my hands on a shiny new W541 and it's hooked up to my Apple Thunderbolt Display using the Thunderbolt port. While this works, the fans are really loud when i.e. opening programs, new tabs in browser etc. I figured that it's because it uses the built-in Intel graphics GPU. Is there any way to "tell" it to use the Nvidia GPU for the thunderbolt port instead of the built-in one? :-) Thanks in advance. All the best, Bo

A:W541 thunderbolt display using intel graphics

Take it up with Lenovo, or buy a dock (apparently that's the solution Lenovo had in mind)!!!

In theory, if the BIOS of the W540 behaved like the BIOS of the W530, then it should allow you to choose whether you want to use built-in Intel HD Graphics exclusively (W530 "integrated") or nVidia Graphics (W530 "discrete graphics"), or some dynamic performance-dependent combination (i.e. W530 "Optimus Mode").  This should be true (and IS true for the W530) no matter whether you're talking about the laptop screen, external monitors connected directly to ports on the W530 laptop, or whether you use external monitors connected through a dock.

The only "wrinkle" for the W530 is that if you have Optimus specified on the W530 then all external monitors are always 100% managed by the nVidia graphics (no matter whether connected directly to the laptop or connected through a dock). So with the W530 in Optimus mode it is actually only the laptop screen which can be controlled by either Intel or nVidia graphics.  For most uses it will be the Intel graphics that controls the laptop screen, unless program graphics performance requirements (as determined by the firmware) find that nVidia is required.  Additionally, you can use nVidia Control panel to theoretically "force" nVidia graphics for specific program windows, but in my experience that doesn't seem to work consistently.

But this very precise choice in the BIOS where the machine actually behaved exactly a... Read more

If you have a W541 then you need the driver for the EM7355 card; that's what should be in the system unless the parts list and psref are mistaken.

Any suggestions?

A:cannot mute internal speakers

That's often caused by a faulty headphone jack on the laptop. When you plug headphones in, a spring-clip inside the jack is moved to one side by the jack-plug. This "breaks" the sound-signal circuit to the speakers. That spring clip is probably distorted or snapped.

I have tried other levels also.  The microphone does not mute by itself, as I read that others have experienced. Internal microphone properties > Advanced: have tried using lower default formats, exclusive mode: on and off, signal enhancements: on and off. In device manager, audio inputs and outputs: I have updated and then uninstalled and reinstalled the Internal microphone (Conextant ISST Audio) driver. In device manager, sound, video and game controllers: I have uninstalled, downloaded and installed new drivers for Conextant ISST Audio and Intel(R) Display Audio. The mic mute button on the keyboard (F8) is not on. In command prompt, as administrator, I have killed the svchost task in the name of the computer and then run Malwarebytes - did not fix anyth... My friend puts Windows 7 Ultimate on my computer and when I got it back, I noticed the my mute button was not turning orange when used, then I noticed my QuickPlay buttons didnt work at all. I read almost all the threads and was able to get my QuickPlay working again but for some reason cannot seem to find the right thread for my non orange mute button. I installed drivers from HP for vista and 7 and changed the compatibility to vista service pack 2 but light is still blue. Could somebody please help me? Bugs me that its not working. Oh yea, I have an HP Pavillion DV6000 series special edition. HP Pavilion dv6000 (GA449UA#ABA) Thats my product number.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have the HP Pavilion dv7-1135nr here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=3795411&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
A few days after installing windows 7 the Quick Launch mute button is stuck on (red) indicating that the system is muted whether or not it's muted in the system tray. No sound will come out of the external speakers but headphones work fine. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers on the support page but that limits me to only using headphones OR internal speakers (even if headphones were plugged in) by setting it through Control Panel. System restore fixed the problem for 1 day and it reoccurred.

I've just installed the newest version from HP but it doesn't affect anything: HP Quick Launch Buttons HP Pavilion dv7-1135nr Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

I found related topics with similar (but not the same) issue but none have sollved the problem. Any help to fix the solution is much appreciated.

Hi Dave, Try this uninstall the HP quickkey software then reboot the machine ( this is a must) download the newest drivers for the HP Quick Keys from HP website. Right click the download and run the install as Admin.
Then once its finished reboot the machine and see if it is fixed.

I have a Pavilion dv7-3165dx with win 7 home premium factory installed, and recently I noticed that my mute button in the quick launch buttons has quit changing to white when the speakers are unmuted. I have tried installing the latest drivers for the quick launch buttons, that didn't work. Someone solved a similar problem (button stayed white when muted) by installing something he/she called the HP Total Advisor, and taking it's advice, but I can't find the program.

Hi, Team. It has been 24-hrs since I found out my thinkpad is not turning on.I have used this last Saturday afternoon and shut down completely.I never ever put my TP into sleep mode or hibernate mode. When I woke up yesterday, 11am I found out that the Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are lit up. The fan is not working (the entire system is off). The temperature of the laptop is normal, not warm or heating up like it is being used. I have removed the external battery and power adapter, pushed the power button for more than 3mins., put back the battery and plugged the power adapter (the power button blinks when I plug the power adapter as it usually does when) and pushed the power button back - nothing happens. The Fn, Mute and Microphone buttons are still lit up and the TP is not turning on.I haven't pushed the emergency reset button at the back (I fear that I might lose all my files).Up until now, the same 3-keys are lit up. I need help as soon as possible.

I have a ThinkPad T450 with Windows 10.  The microphone mute button continues to be illuminated.  I can shut it off for a few minutes, but then it comes back on.  I've downloaded the current drivers for the microphone.  Control panels says that the computer has the Realtek High Definition Audio and the driver is up to date.  I've go through the set-up for the microphone several times, but it still turns back to muted.   Any thoughts on how to keep the microphone active?

When I first got the Thinkpad I had problem with the keys lighting up I sent my Thinkpad W541 Model 20EFCTO1WW because spacebar was sticking. The repair depot replaces the keyboard and palm rest and trackpad. I get the laptop back and the backlight keyboard is not working. They send me replacement keyboard and it comes damaged. so i sent the thinkpad back to repair depot a long with the keyboard they sent me. I get phone call from Lwnovo repair depot and the tech is telling me I spilt something on the laptop and its not covered under warranty(ABUSE) I went back and fourth in a heated conversation and I'm telling him that the Laptop is heavly used but not abused I have NEVER SPILT ANYTHING ON IT.. Repair depot cost for the repair if I want it is $648.
